ORA-06502 when searching region source

The following is listed as a limitation of Apex 3.1, for both interactive reports and the application builder, although the specific context is not mentioned.
The row length limit is 32k (just as with Classic Reports). You can include more columns but if too many are selected to be displayed, the user will get the following error - "ORA-06502: PL/SQL: numeric or value error: character string buffer too small". This should be considered when creating your report.You can find that here: http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/database/application_express/html/3.1_known_issues.html
I'm getting this very error when trying to search region source for one of my application items. Presumably the region source is larger than the 32k limit where my particular page item is being used?
Can anyone from Oracle verify that this is still a problem in Apex 3.2.0.00.27?

  • ORA-06502 when downloading report via BI Publisher

    I'm getting this error when trying to export an interactive or standard report using the BI Publisher report server. It doesn't happen on all reports, but I'm not sure what could be causing the error. The result is an excel file with the message:
    <pre>report error:
    ORA-06502: PL/SQL: numeric or value error: character string buffer too small</pre>
    The standard report has 45 columns and 755 rows. There aren't any errors on the UI when the report is generated.
    Has anyone had this problem or know what to do to fix it? I can't recreate the interactive report region on the same page because there are hundreds of saved reports that I can't delete.
    APEX 4.1.1.00.23
    Oracle 11g 11.2.0.2.0 - 64bit Production
    Thanks!
    Jonathan Hart

    After reading through the trace file from the report generation it looks like the error is caused from binding the sql query to some query or data type within the APEX engine. I double-checked the length of the query and it is longer than 4000 characters. I'm sure some of the interactive report queries are also longer than 4000 with all the filters added in.
    Is there anyway to fix this?

  • ORA-06502 when calling from a procedure

    HI,
    I have a procedure(p1) inside a package that queries a table and send out the result based on the input paramater value. OUT variable is of same type as the table column(using %type), column size is varchar2(4000). This procedure is called from another procedure(p2) and sends out the result to Java Page to display the results at front-end.
    Problem is when application runs and p1 is called I get the following error message,
    ORA-06502: PL/SQL: numeric or value error: character string buffer too small
    Length/size of the character string queried from table is _1747_ that is within the limit of 4000 chars. If I limit the output to just 500 using substr, I don't get any error but adding a single character startes throwing error. OUT variable in both p1 and p2 are declared as table.column%type and error comes from p1 only as confirmed by the error log.
    When I call p1 or p2 from a declare block, I don't get any error.
    This has really confused me and I am not able to find any reason for this difference in behaviour.
    Request to help me in understanding what could be the issue here.

  • Problem with ORA-06502 when exp/imp between two identical versions

    Hi
    I have two identical systems, one system that I develop on and
    the test system. The two systems have the same version of the
    Portal. When I export and then import the application from the
    systems I get a error message on the test system.
    ORA-06502: PL/SQL: numeric or value error: character to number
    conversion error (WWV-11230)
    This error does not appear on the developing system.
    The application I have is a form on a table, and I have some
    buttons with PL/SQL handels on them. I tried to remove this code
    and export with no luck.
    Please help.
    The system:
    Windows NT
    Oracle Portal 3.0.8.9.8
    Thanks

    Could you pls confirm : Have you exported & Imported the shared
    components used by that form?
    If you are not too worried about the templates/fonts then try
    this:
    Click on "Edit" link against that form and click "OK".

  • ORA-06502 When using MAX(Column) with %TYPE

    Hi Guys,
    Just had this discussion on the main database forums, and the problem was somewhat resolved. But they did ask me to check here if this was a known issue.
    Assuming I have a table defined as follows
    CREATE TABLE TEST_TABLE (TEST_COLUMN CHAR(8 BYTE)) ;and the table only has a single record NZ07100S
    We also define a function as
    CREATE OR REPLACE FUNCTION
    FUNCTION GETTESTVALUE
    RETURN TEST_TABLE.TEST_COLUMN%TYPE
    IS
    TEST_VALUE TEST_TABLE.TEST_COLUMN%TYPE;
    BEGIN
    SELECT MAX(TEST_COLUMN) INTO TEST_VALUE FROM TEST_TABLE;
    RETURN TEST_VALUE;
    END;We ran the following command
    SELECT GETTESTVALUE FROM DUAL;and receive an error as follows
    Error report:
    SQL Error: ORA-06502: PL/SQL: numeric or value error: character string buffer too small
    ORA-06512: at "GETTESTVALUE", line 6
    06502. 00000 - "PL/SQL: numeric or value error%s"However, if were to modify the function to the following
    CREATE OR REPLACE FUNCTION
    FUNCTION GETTESTVALUE
    RETURN TEST_TABLE.TEST_COLUMN%TYPE
    IS
    TEST_VALUE TEST_TABLE.TEST_COLUMN%TYPE;
    BEGIN
    SELECT TEST_COLUMN INTO TEST_VALUE FROM TEST_TABLE;
    RETURN TEST_VALUE;
    END;There is no error reported and the value NZ07100S is returned.
    Of course, when we modified the function to be
    CREATE OR REPLACE FUNCTION
    FUNCTION GETTESTVALUE
    RETURN TEST_TABLE.TEST_COLUMN%TYPE
    IS
    TEST_VALUE TEST_TABLE.TEST_COLUMN%TYPE;
    BEGIN
    SELECT CAST(MAX(TEST_COLUMN) AS CHAR(8))INTO TEST_VALUE FROM TEST_TABLE;
    RETURN TEST_VALUE;
    END;No errors are reported, and the value is returned
    Some of the guys in the main forums tried this out on Enterprise edition and did not encounter any issues. To faciliate their testing, I spooled the sqlsplus output and it is as follows

    However, I was just wondering, does anyone know if this is a known issue with Oracle XE ??
    Thanks and regards

    Hi Jega,
    thank you for your post.
    Don't know is this issue XE release specific issue or 10.2.0.1 generally?
    Anyway, already 10.2.0.3 is patched - as you can see, even selecting from XE through PE102030 working OK:

    Hi,

    Try using varchar2 with length specified instead of char in the variable declarations.

    Hi,
    Is there any way to do a text search on all the SQL statements used for region sources ? I want to know all the regions where a database link was used in the SQL code.

    Check out our APEX Views (under Utilities). You can use them to write your own sql to query all apps in your workspace and they are pretty well documented.

    Post the section of code that is causing problem along with statements before and after the section as well.
    For now, I can take a guess that you are trying to assign this entire statement as a string to a character variable. If so, then that variable length definition is too small to hold this entire string. In PL/SQL you can define VARCHAR2 to a maximum of 32767.

  • ORA-06502 when trying to create a web service reference

    Hi,
    I want to create a reference to mail a report from BI Publisher.
    Apparently the e-mail option is no longer available in the v2 webservices so I tried to create a web service reference to:
    .../xmlpserver/services/PublicReportService?wsdl
    I had no problems creating references to the v2 web services however I don't manage to create a reference for this WSDL.
    The last step gives me:
    ORA-06502: PL/SQL: numeric or value error: character to number conversion error
    Thanks for tips or advice.
    Other workarounds to email a report are welcome as well. I tried to use the v2 webservices runReport & scheduleReport before but they don't seem to support this.
    Thanks!

    Okay, so email is available in the v2 webservices I found out. (despite stated in many blogpost it is not)
    --- ScheduleService
    If you're going to use it to send emails you need to create your webservice manually. Otherwise it will not work as the scheduleReport also can print, fax or save your report to webdav and you will need to remove these elements from you soapenveloppe to get it to work.
    This is not possible with the services created using the WSDL wizard.

  • ORA-22809 when executing sample source code for purchaseOrder.xsd

    Hello,
    i was trying to execute the sample code given in chapter 5 of Oracle XML DB User's Guide for version 10GR2 (on an Oracle XE db) and i got:

    The purchaseOrder.xsd schema document has been built by cutting and pasting the various fragments contained in the documentation and can be found at:
    http://www.yocoya.com/temp/purchaseOrder.xsd
    The schema was registered using the following command:
    BEGIN
    DBMS_XMLSCHEMA.registerSchema(
    SCHEMAURL => 'http://xmlns.oracle.com/xdb/documentation/purchaseOrder.xsd',
    SCHEMADOC => bfilename('XMLDIR','purchaseOrder.xsd'),
    CSID => nls_charset_id('AL32UTF8'),
    LOCAL => TRUE,
    GENTYPES => TRUE,
    GENTABLES => TRUE);
    END;
    Can someone explain what i am doing wrong or tell if the sample code is flawed?
    Thank you,

    Just to close this thread, in the sample xml schema document i linked in my original post, there were some xdb:SQLName annotations against elements LineItems, LineItem, Actions and Action. When such annotations are present, column names and object attributes that would otherwise carry the same name as the xml elements/attributes are completely replaced by the specified strings. This is necessary if, for some reason, the element name contain reserved oracle words (i also hit this problem 15 minutes after resolving my original issue...) or simply because we don't like having case sensitive names.
    In my original CREATE TABLE statement i was attempting to refer to nested elements using the original case sensitive names, but these names had been replaced by LINEITEMS, LINEITEM, ACTIONS and ACTION (in uppercase), hence ORA-22809.
    This was not the only problem afflicting my custom purchaseOrder.xsd, but it was the reason of ORA-22809.
    Eventually I managed to get the custom purchaseOrder schema to work.
    May be i'll come up with some tongue-in-cheek tutorial on my blog one day or another.
    Bye,

  • Search Region Source doesn't work for some searches

    I am updating a table, and I wanted to search our Apex app to see what reports are using the table. I typed in the table name and no results came back.
    I knew of one report that definitely uses that table, so I went to it, copied the table name from the query source, and tried the search again - Still no results.
    I tried a different table name, and got a whole bunch of hits.
    The table name that doesn't work is floor_suite_billing
    I even tried partials of that name, but I do not get the report that uses that table.
    Is there something I am missing?
    TIA
    John

    So, I created a test report using "select * from floor_suite_billing" and did a search. This new report came up in the results but the other one didn't.
    Then I tried searching for other keywords from the query but that report still does not show up..
    does anyone have a reliable way of searching Apex?
    Thanks!
    John

  • Error : ORA-06502: PL/SQL: numeric or value error while fetch LONG datatype

    Hello All,
    I have written a script to fetch the text for a view in PLSQL and it gives me the following error :
    Error : ORA-06502: PL/SQL: numeric or value error
    declare
    l_text all_views.text%type;
    begin
    SELECT text INTO l_text FROM all_views WHERE view_name = 'XXVIEW';
    exception
    when others then
    dbms_output.put_line('Error : '||sqlerrm);
    end;
    The above works for some views and not view other views. Can anyone let me know what could be the reason for ORA-06502 when fetching into a long variable in PLSQL.
    Would appreciate any response.
    Thanks,

    If view 'XXVIEW' contains "no record" for field "text" then it'll show this error.
    I mean "SELECT text FROM all_views WHERE view_name = 'XXVIEW';" returns "No record found" then how can you assign "no record" to a variable "l_text ".
    try to execute : SELECT text FROM all_views WHERE view_name = 'XXVIEW';
    What does it give you? any "Blank records"?

  • Webutil ORA-06502

    Hello,
    When using webutil.file_selection_dialog we are getting an ORA-06502 when the directory structure and filename is 255 char long. Is this a known limitation?
    When enabling webutil logging we get the following output:
    2003-aug-22 13:44:53.640 WUF[getProperty()] Value of WUF_GFN_OPENFILE=S:\Exchange\TestData\Product.development[1]proposal\Project..201.Portal\Case Data\Hull\TestData\Product.development[1]proposal\Project..201.Portal\Case Data\Hull\TestData\Product development proposal\Project Portal\Case Data\Extra[234].long path\short.txt
    sun.plugin.cache.DownloadException
    /Vidar

    I tried a simple case and it worked for 279 characters.
    e.g. myString VARCHAR2(400);
    BEGIN
    Webutil_File.File_Selection_Dialog();
    message (myString);
    END;
    works ok.
    My guess is maybe you are assigning it to a field which is not big enough.
