ORA-07217
Is there a way to avoid ORA-07217 when usin OCI? I need to establish a database connection without the Oracle environment.
Oops. Everywhere except .profile ;-)
I shall now go run on my sword...
Thanks!
did you set your oracle_sid ?
Hi all...
New install, trying to log into SQL*PLUS first time as SYSTEM/MANAGER. Get
"ORA-07217 sltln: environment variable cannot be evaluated."
Apparently there's a null environment variable. Question is, what's missing???
Thanks in advance!

Error ORA-07217 starting Oracle9i
Having tried to use Oracle on WindowsMe..., I am now trying RedHat Linux 7.3. I have tried installing Oracle9i standard edition. I had one error during installation which meant the Database Configuration Assistant did not run properly. When I try to run sqlplus and enter the scott/tiger username and password I get the following error:
ORA-07217: sltln: environment variable cannot be evaluated.
As I am new to Linux and Oracle I do not understand what this means. Any information/solutions to this problem would be greatly apprectiated
Thanks
MikeCheck $ORACLE_HOME/dbs. I noticed that the installer didn't create the init<ORACLE_SID>.ora during the installation.
If init<ORACLE_SID>.ora is not in the directory, make a copy from init.ora to init<ORACLE_SID>.ora (e.g your ORACLE_SID name is "test", #cp init.ora inittest.ora). Hope this help. -
RMAN-03008 and ORA-07217 after restore of controlfile, 11.2.0.2
Hi,
try to restore backup done with 11.2.0.2
because upgrade to 11.2.0.3 has problems with workspace manager,

Based on the information you probably I would double check my "env" for an issue. Something set wrong or not set.
Does the "env" work without error?

ORA-07217: sltln: environment variable cannot be evaluated.
hi team
when try to login my sqlplus i get this error
and i suspect it environment variable
how do i set environment in hp-ux 11The easiest way to set the environment is using "oraenv" which uses details in the oratab file.
e.g
. oraenv

Using a variable for the "format" parameter for disk/directory name
In the interest of maintainability, I'm trying to use an environment variable in the format parameter. I've found that RMAN is able to interpret the $ORACLE_HOME and $ORACLE_BASE variables, but others give the error:
RMAN-03006: non-retryable error occurred during execution of command: backup
RMAN-07004: unhandled exception during command execution on channel t1
RMAN-10035: exception raised in RPC: ORA-07217: sltln: environment variable cannot be evaluated.
RMAN-10031: ORA-19583 occurred during call to DBMS_BACKUP_RESTORE.BACKUPPIECECREATE
Is there any more specific documentation about what variables are supported within RMAN? (I've found nothing in the manuals beyond the excerpt I included below.) Does anyone know if the "port-specific directory" mentioned in the excerpt below
can be modified/customized?
Thanks....
format 'format_string'
specifies the filename to use for the backup piece. Any name that is legal as a sequential filename on the platform is allowed, provided that each backup piece has a unique name. If backing up to disk, then any legal disk filename is allowed, provided it is unique. If you do not specify the format parameter, RMAN stores the backup pieces in a port-specific directory ($ORACLE_HOME/dbs on UNIX).i have used a different directory other then port-specific one and i am able to backup .
format '/disk2/app/oracle/test/%d_%s_%t' , i have given full path names instead of substitution variables. i am not sure how
they(variables) will work though in rman. -
Installation of Oracle AS 10g on Red Hat ES 3.0
Installation of Oracle AS 10g on RedHat ES 3.0 (All issues are cleared and u will b done with no error like Java Configuration Failed and make files errors)
Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3 Custom Installation
Copy from OTN Note
Start
Oracle 10g is certified to run the base release of Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3 (Advanced Server and Enterprise Server) without updates. If you have update CDs, you can use the boot CD from the update instead of the boot CD from the base release to automatically apply all updates during the installation. All updates from Red Hat are supported by Oracle.
1. Boot the server using the first CD.
o You may need to change your BIOS settings to allow booting from the CD.
2. The boot screen appears with the boot: prompt at the bottom of the screen.
o Select Enter to continue with a graphical install on the console. (For other installation methods and options, refer to the Red Hat Installation Guide.)
o The installer scans your hardware, briefly displays the Red Hat splash screen, and then begins a series of screen prompts.
3. Language Selection
o Accept the default.
4. Keyboard Configuration
o Accept the default.
5. Welcome Screen
o Click on Next.
6. Mouse Configuration
o Accept the default.
7. Installation Type
o Select Custom.
8. Disk Partitioning Setup
o A thorough treatment of disk partitioning is beyond the scope of this article, which assumes that you are familiar with disk partitioning methods.
(WARNING: Improperly partitioning a disk is one of the surest and fastest ways to wipe out everything on your hard disk. If you are unsure how to proceed, stop and get help, or you will risk losing data!)
This article uses the following partitioning scheme, with ext3 for each filesystem:
The 9GB disk on the first controller (/dev/sda) will hold all Linux and Oracle software and contains the following partitions:
- 100MB /boot partition
-1,500MB swap partitionâSet this to at least twice the amount of RAM in the system but to no more than 2GB (32-bit systems do not support swap files larger than 2GB). If you need more than 2GB of swap space, create multiple swap partitions.
-7,150MB root partitionâ This partition will be used for everything, including /usr, /tmp, /var, /opt, /home, and more. This was done purely to simplify installation for the purposes of this guide. A more robust partitioning scheme would separate these directories onto separate filesystems.
9. Boot Loader Configuration
o Accept the default.
10. Network Configuration
o It is usually best to configure database servers with a static IP address. To do so, click on Edit.
o A pop-up window appears. Uncheck the Configure using DHCP box, and enter the IP Address and Netmask for the server. Be sure that Activate on boot is checked, and click on OK.
o In the Hostname box, select manually and enter the hostname.
o In the Miscellaneous Settings box, enter the remaining network settings.
11. Firewall Configuration
o For the purposes of this walk-through, no firewall is configured. Select No firewall.
12. Additional Language Support
o Accept the default.
13. Time Zone Selection

Need SQLPlus direct connect to DB
This should be an easy one...
On my DB server, I want to connect to the DB using SQLPlus but NOT go through the client/server mechanism. I want a "direct connection" so to speak.
My attempts fail with "ORA-07217: sltln: environment variable cannot be evaluated."
But actually, I'm not sure what I should be using for a username. If the instance I want to connect to is "MYINST", the schema I want to default to is "MYSCHEM", the username for the instance is "MYUSER" and the pw is "MYPW", what should I be entering after the "sqlplus" ?
Thanks in advance
-daveThe problem is not with how you are connecting to sqlplus, but with your os environment. In order to access sqlplus directly, you must set your ORACLE_SID:
in Windows either set ORACLE_SID = sid or create a registry entry under local machine/software/oracle for ORACLE_SID.
In UNIX:
export ORACLE_SID=sid -
WL6.1 SP2, Oracle 8.1.7, OCI, ConnectionPool
Hi,
i try to set up a database connection from a WL6.1 SP2 running on
Solaris 8 to a Oracle 8.1.7 DB running on Linux. I have to use the
Oracle - Driver, not the Weblogic - Driver. CLASSPATH, PATH,
LD_LIBRARY_PATH, ORACLE_HOME and TNS_ADMIN are set correct
(hopefully). When I use the thin - drivers, everything works fine. Now
I want to switch to OCI and get the following error:
ORA-07217: sltln: environment variable cannot be evaluated
I know this error occurs because I did not provide an ORACLE_SID. But
why do I need to export ORACLE_SID, isn´t the SID provided by the
ConnectionURL?
Anyway, if I set the ORACLE_SID explicitely, I get:
ORA-01034: ORACLE not available
Do I need to export the ORACLE_SID? If yes, why do i get the 01034?
The tnsnames.ora is correct, I can connect by using sqlplus to the
database without any problems ...
Here is the definition of the connection - pool:
<JDBCConnectionPool DriverName="oracle.jdbc.driver.OracleDriver"
LoginDelaySeconds="1" MaxCapacity="10"
Name="BMSP JDBC Connection Pool"
Password="{3DES}LFkEplP7jUuI/nVqSwNNjQ=="
Properties="user=vgn_data;dll=ocijdbc8;protocol=oci8"
RefreshMinutes="5" Targets="sgw-domain-server"
TestConnectionsOnRelease="true"
TestConnectionsOnReserve="true"
TestTableName="dual" URL="jdbc:oracle:oci8:@TESTDB"/>
Any hint is very welcome.
Thanks in advance,
JochenHi,
ok, I solved the problem, it was a "classic" version - conflict. The
drivers (classes12.zip) came from an 8.1.6 - Version, but the
libraries were all 8.1.7. Mea maxima culpa ;)
Anyway, it was hard to find this error, because the errormessages did
not point to a version - conflict ... so, if anyone of you out there
encounters the same strange behaviour: Check your versions ;)
Greetings,
Joche -
I am running my Oracle Enterprise DB 9.2.0.1.0 on my Linux Red Hat 8.0 box.
The DB was installed successfully and I even can connect to the database I created via my Java program.
However, when I startup the SQLPLUS (via my "oracle" user account), I had tried logging in with IDs "sys", "system", "daniel" (ID I created using the Enterprise Manager Console). They all failed with message ORA-07217: Environment variables cannot be evaluated.
After checking the error message for its meaning, I found that the cause was that the GETENV returns a null pointer. Although, I know the meaning of the error message, I could not fix the problem. I had checked my environment variable. The include:
ORACLE_HOME=/home/oracle/OraHome1/
JAVA_HOME=/usr/java/j2sdk1.4.1_01/
PATH=$ORACLE_HOME/bin:$JAVA_HOME/bin:.
CLASSPATH=$ORACLE_HOME/jdbc/lib/classes12.zip:$ORACLE_HOME/jdbc/lib/nls_charset12.zip:.
My knowledge tells me that I had done it according to books.
Pls help. Thanks!oppss..the environment variable includes another important entry:
LD_LIBRARY_PATH=$ORACLE_HOME/lib/ -
Could not boot TMS_ORA for bankapp---error:GP_CAT:1235:
Hello group members,
When I tried to integrate tuxedo bankapp application with oracle in linux i get
this error on booting
TMS_ORA---GP_CAT:1235: ERROR: Could not initialize random algorithm.
my environment:tuxedo in linux,oracle 8.1.6
my RM string was Oracle_XA:xaosw:-L${ORACLE_HOME}/lib -lclntsh
TMS was built successfully --using buildtms command.
my ULOG gives other errors also such as
LIBTUX_CAT:466: ERROR: tpopen TPERMERR xa_open returned XAER_RMERR
LIBTUX_CAT:250: ERROR: tpsvrinit() failed
CAN anyone please tell me what to do to solve the problem?
thanks adihello all,
I changed my open info string to OPENINFO="Oracle_XA:Oracle_XA+SqlNet=tuxedosesha+Acc=P/tuxedo/tuxedo+SesTm=30+LogDir=."
and every problem was solved.
TMS and all servers of bankapp booted up with oracle as database!!
thanks to Oracle documentation on XA.

hello all,
I wish to add the following:
my client libraries for oracle is in linux, but my server runs in WIN
NT.
the xa trace gave the error initially as:
ORACLE XA: Version 8.1.7.0.0. RM name = 'Oracle_XA'.
155639.4109.0:
ORA-07217: sltln: environment variable cannot be evaluated.
155639.4109.0:
xaolgn: XAER_RMERR; logon failed. ORA-7217.
so on checking the resources in the web i get that we need to set the
$ORACLE_SID
variable in the operating system.
the $ORACLE_SID for the NT Oracle server was ORCL.so I set my linux
$ORACLE_SID
env variable to ORCL.On doing this I get the xa trace as
ORACLE XA: Version 8.1.7.0.0. RM name = 'Oracle_XA'.
220648.4853.0:
ORA-01034: ORACLE not available
ORA-27101: shared memory realm does not exist
Linux Error: 2: No such file or directory
220648.4853.0:
xaolgn: XAER_RMERR; logon failed. ORA-1034.
so i guess there is a need to correctly set $ORACLE_SID which will help
the application
to correctly identify and connect to the database.am I in the right direction?
someone please help!!
+ how to correctly set the $ORACLE_SID?
thanks
adi
p.s. my openinfo string is:OPENINFO="Oracle_XA:Oracle_XA+Acc=P/tuxedo@tuxedosesha/tuxedo+SesTm=30+LogDir=."
where tuxedosesha is the host string set in the client linux machine
for connecting
to the NT server.

Unfortunately i do not have manuals yet, and i am trying to migrate from sql server. thanks in advanced.Rajasekar,
The Healthy Living tutorial (once loaded) can be found within your Oracle9iAS Portal installation.
Use the Navigator to browse through your system to find the Healthy Living objects.
Your Oracle9iAS Portal should be accessable from http://machinename.domain/pls/

I executed sqlplus command and entered user name and password.
But it says "ORA-07217: sltln: environment variable cannot be evaluated."
According to the manual I have to set GETENV.
How can I do that ?
Admins help pls.
nullMake sure that all of the following environment variables are
set in Linux properly.
edit the /etc/profile file to include lines like
export ORACLE_SID=orcl
for...
ORACLE_HOME
ORACLE_BASE
LD_LIBRARY_PATH
ORACLE_SID
ORAHOME
also, check for ORACLE_TERM, ORA_NLS33 .These may also
have importance.
not sure about the values.. pls refer the installtion
documentation.
