ORA-12154 Could not to resolve service name

I need some help. We have installed Oracle 8.1.6 for Windows NT on my PC one year ago. I also have Forms 5.0 on my PC that had connection service to Oracle database on Unix mashine. Now we don't have this database on Unix mashine so I desided to create a new small database on my PC in order to run some existing Forms. Using Oracle Net8 easy to config I created new service datamart/datamart@orc0 (It was possible only using IPC(local process) not TCP/IP). Now I can access my database using SQL*PLUS but I cannot to connect to this database using Forms. I have error message:
ORA-12154 Could not to resolve service name. Any Ideas?
Thanks in advance,
Galia

    Hello,
I have not used Oracle Gateway for a long time, but did you try to rename the file D:\product\11.2.0\tg\dg4msql\admin\initdg4msql.ora into D:\product\11.2.0\tg\dg4msql\admin\initdg4dmssqldb.ora ?
initdg4msql.ora is the default name, and should be changed if you do not use dg4msql as gateway SID:

    Hope it will help.

  • Intermittent errors - Invoke() could not find the Service name

Users are getting intermittent error : Invoke() could not find the Service name, when opening the Xcelsius dashboards in PRODUCTION. The dashboard has several QAAW queries .These errors are poping up intermittently.
The dashboards are hosted utside the BO environment.

As I continue to look into it, the only thing that I see differently when I am prompted for login is that I can specify the system to log into. I am now wondering if somehow this information is being lost and that is what is causing these issues. Given that the specified name cannot be found and that it does in fact recognize the correct name, I'm not entirely sure what the problem is.
    Further information:
If I disable the use of hard-coded logins and I am prompted, I can display results for the onLoad run. Yet the query is also set to refresh on 30 second intervals. On every subsequent interval I am getting this error.
I think this has something to do with sessions. How do I check which sessions exist on my box? CmcApp somewhere?
Edited by: Brian Comeau on Jun 4, 2009 12:24 AM
Checking in CmcApp I found some sessions. Here is what happens:
    Login to CmcApp Sessions tab
    -Administrator: 1 session at 5:45pm
    Launch browser to Xcelsius .swf
    Prompted for login information: Administrator/password
    -Administrator: 2 sessions at 6:30pm
I had previously set the timeout for sessions in QaaWS to 120 seconds
    After 2 minutes
    -Administrator: 1 session at 5:45pm
Yet throughout this time, I am still given this "invoke() could not find the service name" error. The name provided "qaawsIncidents" is the same name that I can see if I launch QaaWS.
    Ideas?

when i try to install oracle 10g i find this problem i wish you help meIn the future please work from a command line and use copy and paste to put commands and results in your posts. Many people's corporate nets block access to blog sites.
I have recently blogged extensively on this very subject. See edstevensdba.wordpress.com. I can't post a link to the exact article, because my corporate website blocks access to blog sites. I have also, many many times posted on this error in this forum, which a cursory search would have turned up. But once again, back by popular request:
    =================================
ORA-12154: TNS:could not resolve the connect identifier specified
This error means one thing, and one thing only. The client could not find the specified entry in the tnsnames.ora file being used.
As a follow-on to that statement, remember that when you use a dblink, the database in which the link is defined is acting as a client to the database that is the target of the link. So in this case, the tnsnames.ora file on the host of your source should have an entry for your target db, as defined in the db_link.
And for the umpteenth time ... this error has <b><i><u>NOTHING</u></i></b> to do with the status of a listener. The connection request never got far enough to reach a listener. If anyone tells you to check a listener in response to ora-12154, they are not paying attention, or do not understand how TNS works. This error is the equivalent of not being able to place a telephone call because you don't know the number of the party you want to reach. You wouldn't debug that situation by going to the other guy's house and testing his telephone, or by going to the phone company and testing the switchboard. And you don't debug a ORA-12154 by checking the listener. If I had a top ten list of "Incredibly Simple Concepts (tm)" that should be burned into the brain of everyone who claims to be an Oracle DBA, it would include "ORA-12154 Has Nothing To Do With The Listener".
    =================================
    A couple of important points.
First, the listener is a server side only process. It's entire purpose in life is to receive requests for connections to databases and set up those connections. Once the connection is established, the listener is out of the picture. It creates the connection. It doesn't sustain the connection. One listener, with the default name of LISTENER, running from one oracle home, listening on a single port, will serve multiple database instances of multiple versions running from multiple homes. It is an unnecessary complexity to try to have multiple listeners or to name the listener as if it belongs to a particular database. That would be like the telephone company building a separate switchboard for each customer.
Additional notes on the listener: One listener is capable of listening on multiple ports. But please notice that it is the listener using these ports, not the database instance. You can't bind a specific listener port to a specific db instance. Similarly, one listener is capable of listnening on multiple IP addresses (in the case of a server with multiple NICs) But just like the port, you can't bind a specific ip address to a specific db instance.
Second, the tnsnames.ora file is a client side issue. It's purpose is for address resolution - the tns equivalent of the 'hosts' file further down the network stack. The only reason it exists on a host machine is because that machine can also run client processes.
Assume you have the following in your tnsnames.ora:
    larry =
      (DESCRIPTION =
        (ADDRESS_LIST =
          (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = myhost)(PORT = 1521))
        (CONNECT_DATA =
          (SERVICE_NAME = curley)
)Now, when you issue a connect, say like this:
$> sqlplus scott/tiger@larrytns will look in your tnsnames.ora for an entry called 'larry'. Finding it, tns sends a request through the normal network stack to (PORT = 1521) on (HOST = myhost) using (PROTOCOL = TCP), asking for a connection to (SERVICE_NAME = curley).
Where is (HOST = myhost) on the network? When the request gets passed from tns to the next layer in the network stack, the name 'myhost' will get resolved to an IP address, either via a local 'hosts' file, via DNS, or possibly other less used mechanisms. You can also hard-code the ip address (HOST = 123.456.789.101) in the tnsnames.ora.
Next, the standard networking process delivers the message to port 1521 on myhost. Hopefully, there is a listener on myhost configured to listen on port 1521, and that listener knows about SERVICE_NAME = curley. If so, the listener will spawn a server process to act as the intermediary between your client and the database instance. Communication to the server process will be on a randomly selected available port. At that point the listener is out of the process and continues to user port 1521 to await other connection requests.
    What can go wrong?
First, there may not be an entry for 'larry' in your tnsnames. In that case you get "ORA-12154: TNS:could not resolve the connect identifier specified" No need to go looking for a problem on the host, with the listener, etc. If you can't place a telephone call because you don't know the number (can't find your telephone directory (tnsnames.ora) or can't find the party you are looking for listed in it (no entry for larry)) you don't look for problems at the telephone switchboard.
Maybe the entry for larry was found, but myhost couldn't be resolved to an IP address (say there was no entry for myhost in the local hosts file). This will result in "ORA-12545: Connect failed because target host or object does not exist"
Maybe there was an entry for myserver in the local hosts file, but it specified a bad IP address. This will result in "ORA-12545: Connect failed because target host or object does not exist"
Maybe the IP was good, but there is no listener running: "ORA-12541: TNS:no listener"
Maybe the IP was good, there is a listener at myhost, but it is listening on a different port. "ORA-12560: TNS:protocol adapter error"
Maybe the IP was good, there is a listener at myhost, it is listening on the specified port, but doesn't know about SERVICE_NAME = curley. "ORA-12514: TNS:listener does not currently know of service requested in connect descriptor"
Third: If the client is on the same machine as the db instance, it is possible to connect without referencing tnsnames and without going through the listener.
Now, when you issue a connect, say like this:
$> sqlplus scott/tigertns will attempt to establish an IPC connection to the db instance. How does it know the name of the instance? It uses the current value of the enviornment variable ORACLE_SID. So...
    $> export ORACLE_SID=fred
$> sqlplus scott/tigerIt will attempt to connect to the instance known as "fred". If there is no such instance, it will, of course, fail. Also, if there is no value set for ORACLE_SID, the connect will fail.
check executing instances to get the SID

    ERROR:
ORA-12162: TNS:net service name is incorrectly specifiedOk, that is how we get from the client connection request to the listener. What about the listener's part of all this?
The listener is very simple. It's job is to listen for connection requests and make the connection (server process) between the client and the database instance. Once that connection is made, the listener is out of the picture. If you were to kill the listener, all existing connections would continue. The listener is configured with the listener.ora file, but if that file doesn't exist, the listener is quite capable of starting up with all default values. One common mistake with the listner configuration is to specify "HOST=localhost" or "HOST=127.0.01". This is a NONROUTABLE ip address. LOCALHOST and ip address 127.0.0.1 always mean "this machine on which I am sitting". So, all computers are known as "localhost" or "127.0.0.1". If you specify this address, the listener will only be capable of receiving requests from the machine on which it is running. If you specified that address in your tnsnames file - on a remote client machine - the request would be routed to the machine on which the requesting client resides. Probably not what you want.

Please tell me how to change tranname file for this problem.
    my computer name is ufone-3w2dwilbu
my globle database name is orcl.world
    my sid name is orcl
    database is on single computer.
    Thanks in Advance.

    Hi Usman,
It looks u have to give a right version of net service name.the tnsnames.ora file entry should look some thing similar to
    orcl =
    (DESCRIPTION =
    (ADDRESS_LIST =
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = <user IP>)(PORT = <port as given in listener.ora>))
    (CONNECT_DATA =
    (SERVICE_NAME = orcl )
Check for the following before u test.
    1. See whether listener is running .lsnrctl status.
    2. Port in which oracle listener is running, have this propagated to tnsnames.ora.
    3. default_domain value in sqlnet.ora file at client side.
    4. tnsping to the net service name created , should return ok
If ur trying to connect to database from database server box, none of the above steps r required, since it uses bequeate protocol.
    gook luck

    I think this will do.

  • Could not resolve service name when installing Mobile Server

    Hi,
when installing mobile server I am prompted for the SYSTEM pwd and then get "ORA-12154: Could not resolve service name". I install lite in a different home (LITE_HOME) than the database. Database's TNSNAMES.ORA looks like (I added the webtogo.world entry myself)
    ===================== TNSNAMES.ORA =================
    WEBTOGO.WORLD =
         (DESCRIPTION =
    (ADDRESS_LIST =
    (ADDRESS =
    (PROTOCOL = TCP)
    (Host = localhost)
    (Port = 1521)
    (CONNECT_DATA = (lite.oracle)))
    LITE.PL.ORACLE.COM =
    (DESCRIPTION =
    (ADDRESS_LIST =
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = localhost)(PORT = 1521))
    (CONNECT_DATA =
    (SERVER = DEDICATED)
    (SERVICE_NAME = lite.oracle)
    =======================================
Then installing lite I enter localhost/1521/lite.oracle
    I can connect from sqlplus:
    sqlplus system/manager@lite
Java version is 1.3.1_08, which I think is correct.
Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks in advance.

    Hi,
When you install Oracle Lite the valid TNSNAMES.ora becomes the one that is coming with Oracle Lite.
From now on when you must create a tns name you must create it in the Oracle Lite's tnsnames.ora file unless you specify which tnsnames file you will use in the registry.
You can find tnsnams.ora file in the below path:
    <OracleLite_HOME>\network\admin\

  • The remote name could not be resolved

We are running Office 365 Power BI (as a trial) and published our data through the data manager gateway service.
We are able to retrieve a list of shared tables / views through Power Query in Excel 2013 Professional Plus.
However, when clicking on edit on any table returned we get this error in the Power Query window:
    DataSource.Error: OData: Request failed (NameResolutionFailure):
The remote name could not be resolved: 'SERVER-NAME.DOMAIN.local'
    Details: https://POWERBISITE.hybridproxy.powerbi.com/ODataService/v1....
I have tried configuring the Data Manager Gateway service to run HTTP (at first) and HTTPS.
Could this be a port number issue? Or what else?
    Appreciate any help, Thank you
    Ian

    Hi intrasight,
I gave the hosts thing a try.
I was getting 'unable to resolve' errors in attempting to use Power Query in a small stand-alone test domain (all computers are in the domain, and in this little LAN).  So I edited
    hosts in C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc
    I added this line:
    192.168.0.4 mycomputer.ad.mydomain.com
mycomputer is the name of the computer running the Data Management Gateway, and
ad.mydomain.com is the name of the domain.
    Now, I get
<textarea class="role-selectableText" cols="1" readonly="readonly" rows="1" style="width:659px;height:87px;" tabindex="-1">DataSource.Error: OData: Request failed: The underlying connection was closed: Could not establish trust relationship for the SSL/TLS
    secure channel. Details: https://mydomain.hybridproxy.powerbi.com/ODataService/v1.0/mydatasource</textarea>
Which tells me that hosts on the client is indeed now resolving the name/IP correctly, and Power Query is  finding the DMG directly (rather than via the
    hybridproxy.powerbi.com cloud service).
    But that's terrible!
    A) I shouldn't need to use hosts since
    B) the hybridpproxy cloud service is finding the DMG on my database machine (because the Test Connection works OK)
    C) but without hosts the client Power Query says that "The remote name could not be resolved"
DataSource.Error: OData: Request failed: The remote name could not be resolved: 'mycomputer.ad.mydomain.com'
    Details:
    https://mydomain.hybridproxy.powerbi.com/ODataService/v1.0/mydatasource
There's no way an actual production system should require editing
    hosts on all client machines.
So to my mind, the original question is still outstanding.
How do I get Power Query to resolve the remote name?
    Cheers, Donna

I can say with a high level of confidence that the TNSNAMES.ora configuration file is not the problem. My peer is using the exact same file with no issues. I am using the TOAD database utility to connect to the db host. Also, I have ORACLE_HOME defined and the file is located in /network/ADMIN.
    Any ideas?

    Hello,
Make sure your toad looking into right tnsnames.ora; also try this from command line after adding following entry to your tnsnames.ora.

        (ADDRESS_LIST =
          (ADDRESS =
            (PROTOCOL = TCP)
(HOST = rscdd01)  --> you can try ipaddress of your server name as well

  • MSDAORA,IIS,ORA-12154: TNS:could not resolve service name

    Hi All,
I have a Web Service that coded in VS2008, using ORACLE DB(9i).
At a time the application working fine and I can access and do everything with database.
Some other time database server is down for scheduled maintenance. If I try to run the application at this point of time it will raise err "ORA-12154: TNS:could not resolve service name".
When i reset iis it start to work fine for a while. Then same problem occurs again.
    My connection string is connectionString="provider=MSDAORA.1;data source=***;user id=***;password=***;"
    is there any solution?
    i tried that;
If theire is multiple copies of OCIW32.dll you have to make sure that there is only one copy of OCIW32.dll which should be in /Bin folder of the oracle home folder.
Add the IUSR_machine name account and the IWAM_machine name account to the Oracle home folder. Give both accounts full control.
Create empty file tnsnames.ora in same directory as aspnet_wp.exe,

    Hi,
The issue doesnt make much sense on the surface at least. 12154 means the client couldnt figure out what you were referring to with your Data Source= entry. If the database was taken down, I'd expect an "oracle not available" or some other sort of error, as the client should have still be able to resolve the entry at least, even if the database wasnt up at the time.
What do you mean by "When i reset iis it start to work fine for a while. Then same problem occurs again."? The same problem meaning you get 12154 when you take the database down? Or you get 12154 without a db restart?
Are you using TNSNames.ora for client naming resolution, or something else (ldap, for example)?

  • ORA-12154: TNS:Could not resolve service name. (WIS 10901).

HI Gurus, we have the following scenario...
    Weu2019ve installed Busines Objects EDGE 3.1 SP3.
The server of this installation is MS Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition SP2, Intel ® Xeon Enterprise TM CPU 2.80 GHz 6.5 RAM.
In the Server we have SAP R/3 Installed over a DB Oracle 9i Enterprise Edition Release 9.2.8.0.
We installed all BO bundle with successful and we can use the Designer Tool for create universe. In the creation of the universe, we created a connection to the database of the SAP R/3 System and the test runs well, we save and export the universe to CMS. Then, we used that universe in the WebI tool of the suite installed in the server, and it runs well (we call the universe, selected fields of the table, and after run the query, it gives us registers of the DB).
After all this, we open the InfoView and used the WebI and execute the same universe and the same steps. And when we execute the query the following error occurs .
A database error occured. The database error text is: ORA-12154: TNS:Could not resolve service name. (WIS 10901)
The connection to DB is through Designer and we use ODBC Oracle to create the Universe with the Client type and we used super user system, validated previously OK.
    Any suggestion for this error?.
    Thanks.
    Betto.

Make sure there are no syntax errors in the TNSNAMES.ORA file, look for unmatched parentheses. Also check the SQLNET.ORA file.
Is the environment is clustered, if so then make sure you have the ODBC connection in all the servers.

Can anyone help me in this issue.
    Thanks,

    Hello,
Make sure that the service which you have specified in jdbc for making connection with oracle, exists in TNSNAMES.ORA file. You will find this file at different locations in 8i and above. So, better search for it. And add you service name in it. Example services is given in this file itself. So, take help from them.

  • ORA-12154 TNS could not resolve service name error

    Hi
I'm having trouble connecting to database throug sql*plus.I'm able to connect through TOAD but getting 'ORA-12154 TNS could not resolve service name error' when trying to login through sql*plus using same credentials .
I tried running sqlplus through command prompt, but when i enter the user-name i'm getting ORA-12203:TNS:unable to connect to destination.
Can someone help me with this error.
    Thanks.

It would probably give you an idea where to start looking. You need to make sure that you have the correct .ora files needed for establishing connections. I don't know if your service desk just does the installation but no setup or if they also do the setup configuration. You can also try doing the setup on your own to check. You can use net easy config.
