ORA-12154 in new oracle client installation (ASP applications)

Hello,
I've got a test server with an Oracle 10.2 client that has some web services running on it. They connect using the oracle client to a database in another server. Untill this morning they were working great but then I has some trouble and I had to reinstall the Oracle client again. Now I have installed once any Web Service tries to open a connection to my oracle database I get an ORA-12154.
I've tried to run (in my test server) a simple console application that opens a connection to the same database with the same connectionstring and queries a table and it works great, so I think that there might be some problem with asp.net applications or something like that....
Does somebody know how can I solve that??
Thanks in advance!

after you reinstall Oracle client, run netca to configure your tnsnames again. Or if you have copy of old tnsnames.ora file put under new client ORACLE_HOME/network/admin

  • ORA-12154 while installing Oracle 10g on windows 7

    Hi,
I am trying to install Oracle 10g express edition on my machine (core 2 duo 2.93) running on Windows 7.
The installation moves on perfectly for the 1st step and while running the 2nd step (Net configuration Assistant), it gives the ORA-12154 error.
The contents of my configuration files at this point are as follows:
    Listener.ora
    =============
    SID_LIST_ORCL =
    (SID_LIST =
    (SID_DESC =
    (SID_NAME = ORCL)
    (ORACLE_HOME = F:\oracle\product\10.2.0\db_1)
    (PROGRAM = extproc)
    ORCL =
    (DESCRIPTION_LIST =
    (DESCRIPTION =
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = localhost)(PORT = 1521))
    =============
    And that of tnsnames.ora is:
    =============
    ORCL =
    (DESCRIPTION =
    (ADDRESS_LIST =
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = localhost)(PORT = 1521))
    (CONNECT_DATA =
    (SERVICE_NAME = ORCL)
    =============
After some googling around, I have found and installed the Microsoft Loopback adapter too (since my LAN is DHCP enabled) and also tried to turn on the firewall on my machine to check if it is not a problem with the port 1521 being blocked by the firewall.
However, even after all that I still get the error "ORA-12154: TNS:could not resolve the connect identifier specified." while running the Net configuration Assistant and/or running SQL Plus to connect to the SID - ORCL.
I can only see one service running in my services by the name : OracleOraDb10g_home1TNSListenerORCL
Any suggestions or advice on the error would be much welcome.
Is it anything related to Windows 7 ? Because I have managed to install using the same installer on another machine which runs Windows XP and everything seems fine there.
    Thanking you all in anticipation.

Hmmm.. but then I'd have expected some installation error. I have read around that people have managed to install oracle on windows 7.
The error displayed seems to be indicating that there is some configuration or permissions issue.Check that the user has permission to write in the ORACLE_HOME\network\admin - UAC might be blocking that.
Install with software only, and run netca & dbca separately to create the database after the s/w install. (That's the way it is done in production anyway, so get used to it.)
But yes - you still may have problems. Those who did fake it out on Windows 7 usually understand what to do. If you are smart enough to actually do it, my hat is off to you.

  • Oracle Client installs with validated rpms

    Hello,
I'm new to the Oracle on Linux world (OL6), so hoping someone could point me in the right direction.
I'm needing to set up some Oracle clients (11.2) on middle tier/application servers
Looking around for a simple/repeatable way of meeting the pre-install requirements and was considering using the "validated" rpms.
The oracle-rdbms-server-11gR2-preinstall rpm i believe is really for a database server setup, so it's doing some group/kernel parameter/package setup that i suspect isn't really required for a client only setup.
Do people use those validated rpms for client only installs?
Might there be a "Oracle Validated Client preinstall" rpm out there?
Should I just script the package installs and user/group creation?
Looking for some real world suggestions on how to make the client requirements/install process quick and easy!
    Thanks

  • ERROR ORA-12154 connecting to Oracle 9i

    Hi,
I've downloaded the Oracle Developer Tools for Visual Studio .net and when connecting to an Oracle 9i database I get error: ORA-12154... I'm new to Oracle and I know that is related to the “tnsnames.ora” file. The location of my file is on the Oracle\ora92\network\admin directory. Do I need a copy of this file to any other directory? I can still connect to the database using SQL+.
    Any help will be appreciated.
    Many thanks
    Justo

    Hi Justo,
If ODT was installed correctly, it should have gone into a new Oracle10g Oracle home. This would mean that you need to copy your tnsnames.ora from your Oracle9 Oracle home into your Oracle10g Oracle home so that you can continue to use the same aliases from ODT.

  • Strange problem with ORA-12154 from only one client

    Hi all,
    I have a strange problem.
I have three 11.2.0.1 databases on three different hosts.
    For simplicity lets say:
    Host1: database ovm1a
    Host2: database ovm7a
    Host3: database ovm8a
I have a database schema in all three databases named EHJ. In all three databases, there are fixed user
database links to the other databases. So EHJ in ovm1a has two links, one to ovm7a and one to ovm8a. The EHJ schema in ovm7a has two fixed user links to the EHJ schema in the ovm1a and ovm8a databases. And the same is true for the EHJ schema in the third database, ovm8a.
    If I log into the EHJ schema for each of the three databases, I can successfully select over the database links. I've been using the SQL statement: select count(*) from user_users@dblink_name;
For each of the two links in each of the three databases, the query returns 1 so I know the database links are working properly and I have my networking setup properly.
    Now, here is the weirdness.
I have an Oracle Application Server where our Oracle Forms and Reports run. The Oracle client on this install is 10.1.0.5. I've got a tnsnames.ora file setup on this Oracle App server to connect to all three databases ovm1a, ovm7a and ovm8a. I can successfully use the 10.2.0.5 client SQL*PLUS to connect to the EHJ schema in the ovms1, ovms7 and ovms8 databases.
However, (and only when) connected to the ovm1a database from this client, attempts to select over the link throw the famous error: ORA-12154: TNS:could not resolve the connect identifier specified
This error happens with both links in the ovm1a database when connected via this one client.
BUT, if I connect using the same 10.1.0.5 client to the EHJ schema in the ovm7a or ovm8a databases, the database links in those two databases are working just fine.
I'm pulling my hair out trying to figure this out.
I've tried using SQL*PLUS from my desktop machine (10g R2 client) connecting to the EHJ schema on all three databases and the db links all work fine.
Any help in trying to troubleshoot this would be greatly appreciated.
    Cheers

However, (and only when) connected to the ovm1a database from this client, attempts to select over the link throw the famous error: ORA-12154: TNS:could not resolve the connect identifier specified Connected how, as opposed to when you "successfully select..."?
This error happens with both links in the ovm1a database when connected via this one client.Does Oracle config files on ovma1 host differ from the other two db hosts?
    Does
    SQL> select property_name,property_value from database_properties
      2  where property_name in ('GLOBAL_DB_NAME','NLS_RDBMS_VERSION');
SQL> select owner,db_link,host from dba_db_links;return as expected on all three db's?
I've tried using SQL*PLUS from my desktop machine (10g R2 client) connecting to the EHJ schema on all three databases and the db links all work fine.Make sure you are connecting to correct databases. (Simply, three tns aliases could all be pointing to the same database.)

  • I have the new Oracle 8i installer and here is why

I have been trying to get Oracle 8i on Linux and I feel that I
    must share
my thoughts on the new Oracle installer with everybody.
I hate the new installer. I used to run the installer from
    home over my
128Kbps connection while I was connected to the office machines,
    because it
was simple text based. And Oracle 8i has changed all that!
I have nothing against GUI based installers, only when they have
    a little too
many animated images that eat up bandwidth. I had to drive all
    the way to
the office because I did not have sufficient bandwidth to display
    the darn
ringing bell animated image. This is strictly the mentality of
    Windows users
who like to work on the console of servers.
    And check this out:
line 118 in my install log file at :
    /usr/local/oracle/u01/app/oracle/oraInventory/logs/installActions.log
    says :
    platGroup = WINDOWS
And this is on Linux!!! Maybe the Oracle folks are forgetting
    that Linux
users are a little too sensitive to these kind of mistakes. :)
This also supports my theory that the new installer is a gift
    from Windows
programmers. Who are not too familiar with the idea of being
    able to send
their video display to any computer around the world and work
    from there.
A feature every Linux user takes for granted
There are numerous other bugs in the installer and other routines
    of Oracle
8i for Linux. Some of them I will list here:
    2. The installation types screen list 3 options:
    Typical, Minimal and Custom.
Somehow Minimal takes more disk space (642 MB) compared to
    Typical (585 MB).
Well that is what the installation screen says. I have not tried
    to install
    using the minimal install.
    3. The installation cant figure out how much free space is
    available on the /
partition. Is it that hard? Its gives warnings about how I may
    not have
    enough space.
    4. dbassist cant find the cdrom if you try to install the default
    database
from CDROM. It says cannot find CDROM even if you have all your
    stuff under
    /mnt/cdrom
    5. The docs talk about software mount points and data mount
    points /u01 /u02
/u03 and /u04 that I created, but I could not find anywhere to
    specify them
like I was able to, with the last release.
    6. "Oracle Protocol Support" section during the install shows no
    options at
all. What happened to good ole Net8?
And many others. This product is a joke.

My sentiments exactly. There are so many bugs in the
installation of this release that I have just about given up.
And I haven't even started testing the new features yet!
I've tried the install on RedHat 6.0 straight out of the box (no
patches or updates applied) and followed the OIG and release
notes to the letter. Clearly, no one at Oracle did the same,
because there are many problems during install. I finally got a
simple database running, but there are some real gotcha's along
    the way.
Here are just a few of the bugs I've encountered:
    1. Zero length library file $ORACLE_HOME/lib/libnjni8.so.
Netasst doesn't work without it. Someone said they posted the
source code to the comp.databases.oracle.server newsgroup, but I
    can't find it.
    2. Database Creation Assistant thinks dbmssql.sql is called
    dbmssml.sql.
    3. Building the Intelligent Agent with TCL 7.5 causes a cascade
of undefined references when running gmake -f ins_oemagent.mk
    agent
    4. Database Creation Assistant doesn't understand OFA. It wants
to put all of the database files /u01/app/oracle/oradata/<sid> !
    5. Database Creation Assistant will sometimes prevent editing
the data file names to put them in OFA compliant directories.
I am appreciative of the free developer licenses for so many
Oracle products, but this is the worst Oracle install I've had
    in 12 years.

  • Oracle Client Installation. ODBC "not configurable".

    Hi people.
I need your help to solve a problem in a installation of Oracle XE Client.
I install Oracle XE Client in a Windows XP.
In Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> ODBC
    Later in the flap: Controlers
I don't see the "Oracle in XE" controler.
OK. I look in the directory and exists the sqora32.dll, etc. etc.
Do you know how resolve this?
Oks. That's my problem. Now I tell you what I do trying to solve it.
I find in other forums that I can utilize, the normal 10g client or use Instant Client.
Important question: If I take one of this solutions. Have a cost associated?
How much is the cost for instant client?
How much is the cost for normal 10g client?
The interesting of XE in this phase of my project is that is completly FREE !!!
It give me the opportunity of migrate in a later time to a more sofisticated version of Oracle but at this moment I dont complete my product. ;-)
I will try with this solution but I have intrigue and desire of drive the XE software not patch it.
The documentation is recurrent to a document that doesnt explain nothing about my problem.
I tried to register the dll with the following command:
    regsvr32 C:\XEClient\bin\sqora32.dll
And obtained the following message (followed by other):
Error Cannot Load Resource File sqresus.dll
Do you know how resolve this?
    Best regards
    Roberto

    Hello Stevens,
Thanks for the reply. I have installed 11g r2 64 bit client and I have tried this way too C:\Windows\SysWOW64\odbcad32.exe
Like I said, the (sysWOW64) is for the 32-bit.  You now assert you installed 64-bit, so that is not applicable
but there were no drivers found. I didnot find any odbc folder in oracle client home. Could you please suggest what needs to be done next.
Now we know you installed 11.2 client.  Like I said, the ODBC drivers are NOT installed by default on that version.
And so you need to do as I said in my last post:
do a default installation, then go back and do a 'custom' installation, specifying the same ORACLE_HOME as before, and selecting the ODBC components.

  • Where to download Oracle client installation .exe file

    Hi,
I need to install an Oracle client on a Windows Server 2008 (32-bit), how do I do that?
I want to install Oracle client version 10.2.0.4 (Instant Client Package - Basic: All files required to run OCI, OCCI, and JDBC-OCI applications).
I can't find a .exe installation file, does anyone one know if there is a .exe file available and if so where can I download it? I have just found .jar installation files.

  • How to catch the error code thrown by Oracle client installation?

    Hi everyone,
Recently, I'm writing a bat file to install Oracle 11g client for windows, I know the command line should be below, but how to find the error code it return? like the command line I want to run in Windows, the errorlevel will return 0 if the command line is pass, otherwise it will return no-zero:
oui.exe -silent -waitforcompletion -nowait -force -responseFile ...\response\clientruntime.rsp
BTW, I know I can find the error info under the path ...\Oracle\Inventory\logs, but I think it is better if you can tell me another way to catch the error in command line. I just wish that I can determine whether the Oracle provider installation is pass......
    Thanks

    Hi,
I created a folder called app as root in / directory. In this app folder I created a folder called oracle.
I want install Oracle client into /app/oracle
I assigned as root these permission:
    chmod 775 /app
    chmod 775 /app/oracle
but when I run as user:
    ./runInstaller
of Oracle Client I have this problem when I choose /app/oracle as folder of installation.
    [INS-32012] Unable to create directory.
Cause - Either proper permissions were not granted to create the directory or there was no space left in the volume. Action - Check your permission on the selected directory or choose another directory.

    What do I wrong?

11gR2 client is not supported on Fedora, AFAIK - http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E11882_01/install.112/e10841/pre_install.htm#CIHFICFD
Using 777 is typically a bad idea - you have not identified who owns these directories, nor which account is being used to run the installer.
SriniI will fix the idenfied, now I understand.
    Why is not supported?
Until now I have installed all library and the installer is running; my unique problem is on i386 requested library that I'm finding.

  • Where do I find the Oracle Client installation for HPUX

I thought I could install the Oracle Client on my HPUX Itanium server from these zipfiles:
    hpia64_11gR2_database_1of2.zip
    hpia64_11gR2_database_2of2.zip
But, after unzipping them, I'm not locating "clientadmin.rsp" which I was expecting to find in the binary distribution.
The only .rsp files I'm finding are these:
    ./database/response/dbca.rsp
    ./database/response/netca.rsp
    ./database/response/db_install.rsp
Is the install media for Oracle Client going to found somewhere else? I'm having quite some difficulty locating it.
Locating the "Instant Client" was easy, but that's not what we're trying to accomplish here. We want to run the "Administrator installation of Oracle Client".
Any help is, of course, greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!
    ...Chuck...

It seems that my concern is that I haven't got the correct binary (zip) files yet. After extracting BOTH files I'm left with the following, top-level structure:
    $ pwd
    /home/szpqw7/11gR2Client/database
    $ ll
    total 80
    drwxr-xr-x 12 root sys 8192 Dec 16 09:41 doc
    drwxr-xr-x 4 root sys 8192 Dec 16 09:41 install
    drwxr-xr-x 2 root sys 96 Dec 16 09:41 response
    drwxr-xr-x 2 root sys 96 Dec 16 09:41 rpm
    -rw-r--r-- 1 root sys 7046 Dec 16 09:41 runInstaller
    drwxr-xr-x 2 root sys 96 Dec 16 09:41 sshsetup
    drwxr-xr-x 14 root sys 8192 Dec 16 09:41 stage
    -rw-r--r-- 1 root sys 5386 Dec 16 09:41 welcome.html
    $
As you can see, there is no "client" directory there. What binary should I be looking for that would contain the folder you are suggesting??
