  • ORA-12154 as oracle user, whit the root account it works fine

    Hello there,
    I've a problem with a client installation if I try to connect to the database. I've the following configuration:
    1. Database: Running on a Ubuntu Jeos VM, Oracle 11g (Release 11.1.0.6.0 64 bit)
    2. Client: Running on a CentOS 5.2 VM, Oracle Client 10g Linux 32bit
    I've configured the tnsnames.ora and stored it in the $ORACLE_HOME/network/admin directory. The content of the tnsnames.ora file is the following:
    ORCL64=(DESCRIPTION=(ADDRESS_LIST=(ADDRESS=(PROTOCOL=tcp)(HOST=192.168.12.128)(PORT=1521)))(CONNECT_DATA=(SID=orcl)))
    If I try to connect to the database as the oracle user with the following command sqlplus SYS@ORCL64 AS SYSDBA, I'll get the ORA-12154  TNS:could not resolve the connect identifier specified error message. If I try the same as the root user it works fine and I can establish the connection. The same result I've got if I try the command tnsping ORCL64. As the root user the tnsnames adapter can resolve the alias, as the oracle user this is'nt possible and I'll get the error message: TNS-03505: Failed to resolve name. In both he uses the paramter file /u01/app/oracle/network/admin/sqlnet.ora. The content of the sqlnet.ora file is the following:
    NAMES.DIRECTORY_PATH= (TNSNAMES, EZCONNECT).
    Have you any suggestions how can I resolve this problem to get a connection with the oracle user.
    Thank you in advance
    Sven

    Hello,
    thanks for your answers. On the CentOS maschine, where the client is installed, there are no directory's $ORACLE_HOME/bin/oracle and $ORACLE_HOME/bin/lsnrctl. The output from the $ORACLE_HOME/network/admin/*ora is:
    -rw-r----- 1 oracle oinstall 171 28. Apr 21:25 /u01/app/oracle/network/admin/sqlnet.ora
    wx---- 1 root root 118 5. Mai 11:33 /u01/app/oracle/network/admin/tnsnames.ora
    The post-install script $ORACLE_HOME/root.sh I've started.
    On the Ubuntu Jeos VM, where the database is installed, the output from the 3 directories are:
    ls -l $ORACLE_HOME/bin/oracle
    -rwsr-s--x 1 oracle oinstall 188459338 2009-02-23 09:21 /u01/app/oracle/product/11.1.0/db_1/bin/oracle
    ls -l $ORACLE_HOME/bin/lsnrctl
    -rwxr-x--x 1 oracle oinstall 143599 2009-02-23 09:48 /u01/app/oracle/product/11.1.0/db_1/bin/lsnrctl
    ls -l $ORACLE_HOME/network/admin/*ora

  • ORA-12154 using Oracle.DataAccess.Client

    I am experiencing an ORA-12154 exception when accessing a remote Oracle database using ADO.NET called from c# code running on a Windows 2003 system. The code functions correctly on our internal (remote) database using the Oracle XE 10.2 Client. At the customer site with Oracle 10.1 Client the same code generates the 12154 error.
    At the customer site, I can connect without errors with the customer's connection information (Hostname, port, SID) using Navicat 8 Lite for Oracle and SQL-Plus. I can also connect with no problems using ODBC (except I can't use ODBC because it causes other problems when accessed from ASP.NET).
    The connection string is correctly formulated i.e. "Data Source=(DESCRIPTION=(ADDRESS_LIST=(ADDRESS=(PROTOCOL=TCP)(HOST=myServerName)(PORT=1521)))(CONNECT_DATA=(SERVER=DEDICATED)(SERVICE_NAME=myServiceName)));User Id=myUserName;Password=myPassword"
    When I run TNSPING on the client's system I get the following result (server and SID name altered for confidentiality reasons):
    Adapter TNSNAMES zur Auflösung des Alias benutzt
    Attempting to contact (DESCRIPTION = (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = myServerName)(PORT = 1521)) (CONNECT_DATA = (SERVER = dedicated) (SERVICE_NAME = myServiceName)))
    OK (10 ms)
    I can't determine anything about the listener since I don't have access to teh datbase server.
    To summarize, my .net code fails when I use the Oracle Data Access Client, but works fine with ODBC, and Navicat, SQL Plus also work fine.
    Can anyone suggest the cause and possible solution for this problem? - thanks in advance for any help :)

    // *Action:
    //   - If you are using local naming (TNSNAMES.ORA file):
    //      - Make sure that "TNSNAMES" is listed as one of the values of the
    //        NAMES.DIRECTORY_PATH parameter in the Oracle Net profile
    //        (SQLNET.ORA)
    //      - Verify that a TNSNAMES.ORA file exists and is in the proper
    //        directory and is accessible.
    //      - Check that the net service name used as the connect identifier
    //        exists in the TNSNAMES.ORA file.
    //      - Make sure there are no syntax errors anywhere in the TNSNAMES.ORA
    //        file.  Look for unmatched parentheses or stray characters. Errors
    //        in a TNSNAMES.ORA file may make it unusable.
    //   - If you are using directory naming:
    //      - Verify that "LDAP" is listed as one of the values of the
    //        NAMES.DIRETORY_PATH parameter in the Oracle Net profile
    //        (SQLNET.ORA).
    //      - Verify that the LDAP directory server is up and that it is
    //        accessible.
    //      - Verify that the net service name or database name used as the
    //        connect identifier is configured in the directory.
    //      - Verify that the default context being used is correct by
    //        specifying a fully qualified net service name or a full LDAP DN
    //        as the connect identifier
    //   - If you are using easy connect naming:
    //      - Verify that "EZCONNECT" is listed as one of the values of the
    //        NAMES.DIRETORY_PATH parameter in the Oracle Net profile
    //        (SQLNET.ORA).
    //      - Make sure the host, port and service name specified
    //        are correct.
    //      - Try enclosing the connect identifier in quote marks.
    //   See the Oracle Net Services Administrators Guide or the Oracle
    //   operating system specific guide for more information on naming.Bottom line is the net service name you presented is not found in the tnsnames that was being used. Which may not be the tnsnames you think was being used.
    And since it never resolved that on the client side, there is no need to look to anything (like the listener) on the host side. You never got out of your driveway, so there is no need to see if the entrance to your destination is open.

  • ORA-12154 with Oracle 10.2 Client to 9.2.0.3 Database

    I'm having a devil of a time getting connected to a new installation of Oracle 9.2.0.3 on Windows 2003. I have no problems connecting from clients running the 9i client. I have a server using the 10.2 client and it won't talk to the Windows server. I don't think it's the client installation since this server with the 10g client has no problems talking with Oracle 9.2.0.6 servers running on Unix. It's only trying to talk with the 9.2.0.3 on Windows.
    I tried installing the 32-bit 10.2 client on a newly installed client, and it also can't talk to Oracle on Windows. Again, it has no problem connecting to the Oracle servers on Unix.
    Here are the two types of Oracle servers
    Windows:
    Window Server 2003 32-bit
    Oracle 9.2.0.3 32-bit
    Unix:
    Sun Solaris 64-bit
    Oracle 9.2.0.6 64-Bit
    Any help would be appreciated. I've tried Googling this, but can't find any helpful solutions. The thing that has me baffled is that I can connect to Oracle on Unix, it's just Oracle on Unix that has the issue.
    Thanks,
    Leonard Nisenoff

  • Oracle 11g advantages for performance

    Hello,
    I am doing test of Client side result set cache on oracle 11 g rel2 ,O/S- RHEL
    i am doing test as below on 2 Oracle 11g rel2 test servers on RHEL
    one oracle 11g rel2 instance is used as server1,from other oracle 11g rel2 server2, i am running queries connecting to server1 through sqlplus,listener(tnsnames )
    i run query few times without any client cache settings then
    i have set init.ora paras for oracle 11g rel2 for client result cache,cache size/cache lag
    i run the same query few times
    in both the cases after each run i am noting statistics
    select * from V$RESULT_CACHE_OBJECTS;
    select * from V$CLIENT_RESULT_CACHE_STATS;
    select * from gv$cpool_conn_info;
    also autotrace,plan etc
    but after using cache this views are getting poplulated ,autiotrace plan shows cache is used
    but i cant see any improvement in performance after using client cache like speed,reduce network trip, etc
    in fact without using cache/with no hint ,query executes faster
    let me know if i am missing something,i believe sqlplus internally using OCI
    thanks

    Unless you plan to provide the information ask for about what it is you are doing there really isn't any point in providing status updates that: you test this, you tested that. You made several statements about what you were doing

    You say you are doing a bunch of things
    But you don't post any of those results so we can see what it is you are looking at.
    No one can comment on things they can't see.
    >
    You have to be using OCI for client side caching so if you use the Java thin driver but don't use OCI there won't be any cacheing. There also won't be any if it is not enabled or if the query has certain constraints as listed in the doc
    http://docs.oracle.com/cd/B28359_01/appdev.111/b28395/oci10new.htm#CHDGGFEF
    >
    Queries that are not Cached
    There are queries that are not cached on the OCI client even if the result cache hint is specified. Such queries may be cached on the database if the server result cache feature is enabled (see Oracle Database Concepts, "SQL Query Result Cache" for more information). If a SQL query includes any of the following, then the result set of that query is not cached in the OCI client result cache:

  • Loosing connections with ORA-12154

    Our scenario goes like this. We run transaction(1000's) fine for a while
    (hours!), then we get the following errors in sequence for short period of
    time(~2-5 minutes):
    <JDBC Pool> Sleeping in createResource()
    <JDBC Pool> Sleeping in createResource()
    <JDBC Pool> Connection for pool "bankframePool" created.
    <JDBC Pool> Connection for pool "bankframePool" created.
    <JDBC Pool> Sleeping in createResource()
    <JDBC Pool> Sleeping in createResource()
    Our application, during that time, stops with ORA-12154 from Oracle. Then
    everything seems to recover fine and we process transaction again fine for
    hours. Why would we loose the connections like this while we are running
    transaction non stop through the system?
    Regards,
    Andre Dionne

    We are running on solaris 8. This morning we tried to start the application
    servers with the minimum connection equal to the maximum(150) and we got
    ORA-12154 after creating 122 connections. Could it be related to the Oracle
    OCI8 driver we are using?

    Andre DionneHi. For stability and performance, I recommend defining your connectionpool
    to make all it's connections at startup (init = max). Oracle is sometimesweak
    when being asked for lots of connections at any one time. Sometimes itgets overrun,
    and fails some connection attempts. Also, tell me if you're running onSolaris.

  • ORA-12154 error when trying to connect to Oracle 11g DB from Excel 2010

    All,
    I am trying to set up Excel 2010 64-bit to connect to an Oracle 11g database, but am having some trouble due to an "ORA-12154 could not resolve the connect identifier specified" error. I am able to TNSping the SID name, as well as connect to SQLplus. The TNS entry works, and the Oracle Home is in the right spot. I am even able to put the full connection string in the "Data Source" field when creating a data link in Excel and have it connect to the DB. But I would like to be able to create one that used the SID rather than the full connection string, as other users will have to use this. The developer behind the Excel solution created a number of .odc files to connect to various databases, so this gives extra weight behind figuring out how to connect via a SID rather than a full connection string. Any suggestions?

    If you are able to connect with sqlplus, then this really becomes a question of how to define a data connection in Excel.
    But after quickly googling ..
    In excel ...
    "Data" tab
    "from other sources"
    "from data connection wizard"
    select ODBC DSN
    On data link properties, select the "connection" tab
    select "Use Data Source Name" and hit the drop-down
    select a dsn that you had previously set up to point to the oracle database.
    Anyway, that looks like how it is supposed to be done.  I'm getting a dll initialization error.  Probably due to the fact I have both 32-bit and 64-bit oracle clients, and windows never handles that very gracefully.  But then Windows never graceffully handles anything that isn't MicroSoft.   To paraphrase Forest Gump, "My momma always said Windows was like a box of chocolates.  You never know what you're going to get."
    In any event, the error you report means it was actually tying to look it up in tnsnames, but what you supplied wasn't found there.  That can also be a big issue when dealing with MS products, because they don't use the same terminology, so lead people into entering something other than what Oracle expects.  Are you referencing an ODBC DSN?  If so, have you tested that apart from Excel?

  • Oracle Forms 11g - ORA-12154: TNS error

    Okay, before I post my info, I searched and searched everywhere via Google, OTN, Experts-Exchange, etc...to try to figure this one out and I'm stumped. So here goes. I get the dreaded "*ORA-12154: TNS:could not resolve the connect identifier specified*" error. Here's my environment:
    Server: Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 version runs the following:
    Oracle Database 11g (Rel 1): 11.2.0.10
    Oracle Fusion Middleware Forms Server 11g (Rel. 11.1.1.2.0)
    I can connect via SQL+ no problem
    Client: My Windows XP Professional PC.
    I can TNSPING the database SID no problem.
    I can connect via SQL+ no problem
    I can connect via TOAD to the db no problem
    I can connect to Oracle Enterprise Manager via the web interface no problem
    I do have 2 Oracle Homes (Oracle 8.0.6, Oracle 11.1.0.1) on my PC. Currently the current home is the 11g one. I do have my paths on my PC setup fine.
    The problem is when I try to run a sample form via the web I created, the login prompt comes up and I enter my username/password/database SID and that's when I get the error. Any clues as to what I should look for? Eventually this will be an app that all the users will be accessing and they shouldn't have to worry about having anything setup on their PCs.
    Thanks

    Also keep in mind that tnsnames.ora file in forms 11g is under $ORACLE_INSTANCE/configBINGO!!!!!!!!!! We have a winner! Thank you so much "ashosheh". I looked and there WAS a tnsnames in the directory "Oracle/Middleware/asinst_1/config"....*BUT* it was a sample one. Meaning there was no entry just comments showing you a sample version of a TNS Names entry. So I copied my entry from another TNSNAMES and put it in there and voila...I was able to connect.
    Thank you very much. This was driving me nutz all of last week!

  • ORA-12154 Windows 7 32bit ORACLE 11g ODBC Driver CONNECT

    Hi All,
    I'm having problems connecting to extenal database using Oracle ODBC driver for Windows 7 32bit  .
    I have downloaded the instantclient odbc nt 11.2.0.4zip drivers for 32-bit and unpacked it
    and run the installer and choose the default location ie c:\app\product\11.2.0\client_1
    2.I done all the necessary setting ie set the Path and creating new user variable for tns admin
    in the system environment and modified the hostfile on etc sys32 and copied both tsnamesn and sqlnet
    to Network\Admin file
    3.I then started the Data Sources (ODBC) manager, configured the driver and tested the
    configuration then I got a testing connection error SQLstate= 08004... ORA-12154 TNS couldn't connect.
    could you please help. Thanks in advance.

    I couldn't understand why you need two different tnsnames files. Are they resides in two different directories with filename "tnsnames.ora"? In that case, you need to set the TNS_ADMIN appropriately.
    If you haven't named tnsnames files as "tnsnames.ora", then Oracle ODBC driver may not able to access it.
    Also if TNS_ADMIN env variable is not pointed to the correct directory where tnsnames.ora file resides, then Oracle ODBC driver won't be able to access it.
    In any case, if Oracle ODBC driver unable to access the tnsnames.ora and there is no connection string value stored in the Windows registry, then it throws ORA-12154 error.
    Thanks,
    Senthil

    Hi Sir/Madam,
    I am Wayne, I need your help to resolve my issue in oracle database 11g.
    1. I installed Oracle 11g Personal Edition, Release 11.2.0.10, 64bits,
    2. Test connection(oracle in oradb11g_home1) is successed in data source, odbc,
    2. Then, I tried to connect this with Visual Basic(Visual Studio 2010), data connections, add connections, .net framework data provider for oracle,
    3. but I received an error message as "Attempt to load Oracle client libraries threw BadImageFormatException."
    4. Then, I download the ODAC(11.2.0.3.0) for 64bits, and installed,

  • Error ORA-12154 trying to connect with instant client 11g / LDAP on Ubuntu

    Hello,
    I have successfully installed instant client 11.2.0.2 and sqlplus on my Ubuntu 11.04 workstation. I am able to successfully connect to DB's defined in tnsnames.ora, but when the resolution is (or should be) by LDAP, I get error
    ORA-12154: TNS:could not resolve the connect identifier specified
    Note: while it's fine for testing, it's not a viable option to setup all the DB's defined in the OID in tnsnames.ora - I need to use LDAP.
    My setup is as follows:
    Install folder: /opt/oracle/instantclient_11_2
    TNS_ADMIN=/opt/oracle/instantclient_11_2/
    sqlnet.ora
    NAMES.DIRECTORY_PATH=(TNSNAMES,LDAP)
    I am certain that tnsnames.ora and ldap.ora are valid, as I can connect successfully on another machine with the full client installed using the same files.
    I tried to setup tracing in sqlnet.ora as follows
    TRACE_LEVEL_CLIENT = SUPPORT
    TRACE_DIRECTORY_CLIENT = /tmp
    TRACE_FILE_CLIENT = sqlnet.trc
    but not trace file gets generated in /tmp - am I doing something wrong ? (Note, I also tried to set DIAG_ADR_ENABLED=OFF as suggested by Laurenz Albe in Instant client don't work trace but that did not help)
    I checked DocID=359206.1 but I don't think that applies as I'm on 11g.
    Hope someone can help. Thanks in advance !

  • Kerberos Authentication between Sharepoint 2013 Foundation - SSRS 2012 - Oracle 11g failing with ORA-12638: Credential retrieval failed

    I have set up SharePoint 2013 Foundation, SharePoint Reporting Services and SQL Server 2012 in a single server. I then created a Data Connection to Oracle 11g. Upon testing the connection, it throws the error “ORA-12638: Credential retrieval failed”.
    Given below are the steps of installation and configuration.
    Installation till basic authentication:
    The installation has been done in a
    single server.
    Installed SQL Server 2012 (Developer version).
    Selected only the following features:
    Database Engine Services
    Analysis Services
    Reporting Services – SharePoint
    Reporting Services Add-in for SharePoint Products
    Management Tools – Basic
    - Management Tools - Complete
      2. Installed SQL Server 2012 SP1.
      3. Installed SQL Server 2012 SP2.
      4. Installed SharePoint Foundation 2013.
      5. Created web application (without Kerberos; we did not even create the SPNs).
          The application pool has been configured to use Reporting Services account since it is a single server installation. This account has been registered as a managed
    account.
      6. Created Site Collection.
      7. Verified that Reporting Services is not installed.
      8. Installed SharePoint Reporting Services from SharePoint 2013 Management Shell.
      9. Verified that Reporting Services is installed.
     10. Created a new SQL Server Reporting Services Service Application and associated the Web Application to the new SQL server Reporting Services Service Application.
      11. Verified that SQL Server Reporting Services Service Application and its proxy have started. Reset IIS.
      12. Created a Site.
      13. Created a Data Connection library with “Report Data Source” content type.
      14. Created a Report Model library with “Report Builder Model” content type.
      15. Created a Report library with “Report Builder Report” content type.
      16. Uploaded an SMDL to the Report Model library.
      17. Added the top level site to Local Intranet instead of as a Trusted Site in the browser settings.
      18. Able to create and save a report using Report Builder.
    Hence, basic authentication is working and SSRS is able to connect to Oracle database.
    Next we have to configure Kerberos settings between SharePoint and SQL Server.
    Implementation of Kerberos authentication
    In the Report Server machine, opened the file C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\15\WebServices\Reporting\rsreportserver.config  and added the Authentication Types of RSWindowsNegotiate
    and RSWindowsKerberos.
     2.  Set up the following SPNs.
                   a) SQL Server Database Engine service (sqlDbSrv2):
                    setspn -S MSSQLSvc/CER1110:1433 CERDEMO\sqlDbSrv2
                    setspn -S MSSQLSvc/CER1110.cer.demo.com:1433 CERDEMO\sqlDbSrv2
                 In the Delegation tab of the account, selected "Trust this user for delegation to any service (Kerberos only)".
    b) Account: SharePoint Setup Admin account (spAdmin2)
         setspn -S HTTP/CER1110:9999 CERDEMO\spAdmin2
                    setspn -S HTTP/CER1110.cer.demo.com:9999 CERDEMO\spAdmin2
                    In the Delegation tab of the account, selected "Trust this user for delegation to any  service
    (Kerberos only)".
    c) Account: SQL Server Reporting Service account (sqlRepSrv2)
                       setspn -S HTTP/CER1110 CERDEMO\sqlRepSrv2
                       setspn -S HTTP/CER1110.cer.demo.com CERDEMO\sqlRepSrv2
                       In the Delegation tab of the account, selected "Trust this user for delegation to any service
    (Kerberos only)".
      3. Configure the Web Application to use “Negotiate (Kerberos)”.
      4. Logged in as SharePoint Administrator to the SharePoint server and opened the top level site in the IE browser.
         The Event Viewer logged the login process for the SharePoint Administration account as
    Negotiate and not Kerberos.
      5. Implemented Kerberos for Oracle database and client.
         Able to connect to the Oracle database via Kerberos authentication using SQL Plus.
      6. Turn on Windows Firewall.
      7. While testing the site's data connection using Kerberos settings, got the error
    “Can not convert claims identity to windows token. This may be due to user not logging in using windows credentials.”
          Note: The Data Connection for basic authentication still worked.
      8. Created a Claims to Windows Token Service account (spC2WTS2).
      9. Started the Claims to Windows Token Service.
     10. Registered the Claims to Windows Token Service account as a Managed Account.
     11. Changed the Claims To Windows Token Service to use the above managed account.
     12. Verified that the Claims to Windows Token Service account (spC2WTS2) is automatically added to the WSS_WPG local group on the SharePoint box.
          Note: The Reporting Services service account is also a part of the WSS_WPG local group.
     13. Added the Claims to Windows Token Service account (spC2WTS2) to the Local Admin Group on the machine having the SharePoint App Server.
     14. In the SharePoint box, added the Claims to Windows Token Service account (spC2WTS2) in the Act as part of the operating system policy right.
     15. The Claims to Windows Token Service account (spC2WTS2) has the WSS_WPG group configured.
          When the C2WTS service was configured to use the managed account Claims to Windows Token Service account (spC2WTS2) earlier, the spC2WTS2 account was automatically
    added to the WSS_WPG local group on the SharePoint box. The WSS_WPG group in turn is configured in c2wtshost.exe.config file.
     16. Verified that the Reporting Services account is a managed account and part of the WSS_WPG group.
     17. Earlier Service Application Pool - SQL Server Reporting Services App Pool service was associated with the SharePoint Admin account.
          Changed this to associate the Reporting Service account with the Service Application Pool - SQL Server Reporting Services App Pool service.
     18. Changed the delegation of the Reporting Service account to constrained delegation with Protocol Transitioning. This is because we are transitioning from one authentication scheme (Claims) to another (Windows Token).
          For this, the delegation has been changed to "Trust this user for delegation to specified services only". Also, selected the sub radio button "Use
    any authentication protocol". Selected the Oracle Kerberos service as the service to which this account can present delegated credentials.
          Note: The Reporting Service account already had an HTTP SPN.
     19. Next, the goal was to make the Claims To Windows Token Service account match the Reporting Service account.
           For this, we created a fake SPN for the Claims To Windows Token Service account since the delegation tab was missing.
           The delegation has been changed to "Trust this user for delegation to specified services only". Also, selected the sub radio button "Use any
    authentication protocol". Selected the Oracle Kerberos service as the service to which this account can present delegated credentials.
     20. Restarted the SharePoint server.
     21. Tested the data connection with the Kerberos settings again.
           Got the error
    “ORA-12638: Credential retrieval failed”.
    Can anyone tell me what is wrong with this setup?

    http://www.freeoraclehelp.com/2011/10/kerberos-authentication-for-oracle.html
    Problem4: ORA-12638: Credential retrieval failed
    Solution:  Make sure that SQLNET.KERBEROS5_CC_NAME is set in sqlnet.ora and okinit has been run before attempting to connect to the database.

  • ORA-12154 while installing Oracle 10g on windows 7

    Hi,
    I am trying to install Oracle 10g express edition on my machine (core 2 duo 2.93) running on Windows 7.
    The installation moves on perfectly for the 1st step and while running the 2nd step (Net configuration Assistant), it gives the ORA-12154 error.
    The contents of my configuration files at this point are as follows:
    Listener.ora
    =============
    SID_LIST_ORCL =
    (SID_LIST =
    (SID_DESC =
    (SID_NAME = ORCL)
    (ORACLE_HOME = F:\oracle\product\10.2.0\db_1)
    (PROGRAM = extproc)
    ORCL =
    (DESCRIPTION_LIST =
    (DESCRIPTION =
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = localhost)(PORT = 1521))
    =============
    And that of tnsnames.ora is:
    =============
    ORCL =
    (DESCRIPTION =
    (ADDRESS_LIST =
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = localhost)(PORT = 1521))
    (CONNECT_DATA =
    (SERVICE_NAME = ORCL)
    =============
    After some googling around, I have found and installed the Microsoft Loopback adapter too (since my LAN is DHCP enabled) and also tried to turn on the firewall on my machine to check if it is not a problem with the port 1521 being blocked by the firewall.
    However, even after all that I still get the error "ORA-12154: TNS:could not resolve the connect identifier specified." while running the Net configuration Assistant and/or running SQL Plus to connect to the SID - ORCL.
    I can only see one service running in my services by the name : OracleOraDb10g_home1TNSListenerORCL
    Any suggestions or advice on the error would be much welcome.
    Is it anything related to Windows 7 ? Because I have managed to install using the same installer on another machine which runs Windows XP and everything seems fine there.
    Thanking you all in anticipation.

    Hmmm.. but then I'd have expected some installation error. I have read around that people have managed to install oracle on windows 7.
    The error displayed seems to be indicating that there is some configuration or permissions issue.Check that the user has permission to write in the ORACLE_HOME\network\admin - UAC might be blocking that.
    Install with software only, and run netca & dbca separately to create the database after the s/w install. (That's the way it is done in production anyway, so get used to it.)
    But yes - you still may have problems. Those who did fake it out on Windows 7 usually understand what to do. If you are smart enough to actually do it, my hat is off to you.

    Hi,
    You may require ODBC access to your Oracle database; this can be
    provided by Openlink Software at http://www.openlinksw.com. We
    have many clients using PHP scripts on Linux/Unix to connect
    with Oracle running on remote servers (or the same machine).
    Good luck!
