Oracle Forms 11g - ORA-12154: TNS error
Okay, before I post my info, I searched and searched everywhere via Google, OTN, Experts-Exchange, etc...to try to figure this one out and I'm stumped. So here goes. I get the dreaded "*ORA-12154: TNS:could not resolve the connect identifier specified*" error. Here's my environment:
Server: Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 version runs the following:
Oracle Database 11g (Rel 1): 11.2.0.10
Oracle Fusion Middleware Forms Server 11g (Rel. 11.1.1.2.0)
I can connect via SQL+ no problem
Client: My Windows XP Professional PC.
I can TNSPING the database SID no problem.
I can connect via SQL+ no problem
I can connect via TOAD to the db no problem
I can connect to Oracle Enterprise Manager via the web interface no problem
I do have 2 Oracle Homes (Oracle 8.0.6, Oracle 11.1.0.1) on my PC. Currently the current home is the 11g one. I do have my paths on my PC setup fine.
The problem is when I try to run a sample form via the web I created, the login prompt comes up and I enter my username/password/database SID and that's when I get the error. Any clues as to what I should look for? Eventually this will be an app that all the users will be accessing and they shouldn't have to worry about having anything setup on their PCs.
Thanks

Also keep in mind that tnsnames.ora file in forms 11g is under $ORACLE_INSTANCE/configBINGO!!!!!!!!!! We have a winner! Thank you so much "ashosheh". I looked and there WAS a tnsnames in the directory "Oracle/Middleware/asinst_1/config"....*BUT* it was a sample one. Meaning there was no entry just comments showing you a sample version of a TNS Names entry. So I copied my entry from another TNSNAMES and put it in there and voila...I was able to connect.
Thank you very much. This was driving me nutz all of last week!

Hi all,
I have a strange problem (for me) while getting connected to Oracle.
I can get connected to Oracle through SqlPlus window using
USER/PWD@HOST
But when i try to get connected through command prompt for importing
with the same connection details, I am getting the following
error message...
IMP-00058: ORACLE error 12154 encountered
ORA-12154: TNS:could not resolve the connect identifier specified
IMP-00000: Import terminated unsuccessfully
Please help me to solve this issue.
thanks.check your environment variable
echo $ORACLE_SID is properly set or not....if it is correct then check your tnanames.ora entry wherer that entry is having your database details with the connect string you using to startup....
better to give more details as mohammad said...

Oracle forms 11g running forms on internet explorer error
Hi , this is abhishek I am new to oracle forms 11g . My question is that when I run the forms 11g on internet explorer it shows an error . The error is too many tries.
first I like to clarify that before running the forms i start the weblogic server ,along with admin server for weblogic and opmn managed components, i give the user name and password to start the weblogic server, everything starts smoothly . even I have jre 1_6_29 installed to start the servlet . Main problem starts when the java runs the internet explorer browser then a box appears asking for user name and password and database connect string , then after putting the username and password it again asks for the username and password.It happens three times and after that an error appears in a dialog box which shows too many tries . I also checked the net configuration asistant with the local net service name configuration there it shows the service name which is orcl.Home and then TCP --->Host name is localhost with 1521 as standard port number --> yes perform the test and the result is written connecting test successful . what is wrong with the instance , the http listener is working perfectly then why this error is coming, is there something to do with the browser , but the browser is supporting java very well .. please helpI have found the file but it does not have any path except forms_path,oracle_home,webutil_config,etcCurious, my default.env had the following default TNS_ADMIN entry:
# TNS Entry to locate the database
TNS_ADMIN=D:\Oracle\Middleware\asinst_1\configI modified this entry to point to the location where my tnsnames.ora and sqlnet.ora files are located. I use a generic location and share them accross installed Oracle products rather than maintain seperate copies of these files in each Oracle Home. For example, I commented out the original entry and added a new one.
#TNS_ADMIN=D:\Oracle\Middleware\asinst_1\config

ORA-12154 Connection error from HFM to Oracle Database
Hi,
I am trying to configure Hyperion HFM but can write to HFM database.
The implementation architecture:
Hyperion 11.1.2.2 (with all the requiered patches for HFM, FDM, Shared Services, Workspace and Oracle Application Development)
Server 1:
Windows Server 2008 x64
Installed products: Foundation (EPMA, CalcManager), BI, HFM web components and ADM driver
Configured products: Foundation(EPMA, CalcManager), BI.
Database Client: 11gR2 x64
Server 2:
Windows Server 2008 x64
Installed products: HFM, FDQM
Configured Products: FDQM, HFM
Database Client: 11gR2 x32, 11gR2 x64 (x32 version installed first)
Server 3:
Database: Oracle 11.2.0.2
All the products from server 1 are working fine, FDQM (server 2) is also working fine, but, when I try to do any action related with HFM database the system fails.
I have tested the connection is these scenarios:
1. SQLdeveloper: successfull!, I can create tables, views, etc. Double checking the user privileges it has all the required.
2. tnsping: successfull!
3. HFMApplicationCopy utility: Successfull using UDL file and writing the connection parameters.
4. EPM System Configurator: the configurator successfully validates the database connection information, but does not create the tables on the database. No errors in the configtool log.
5. EPM Diagnostic Tool: fails with this error message:

Edited by: Otein on 19-oct-2012 14:04Hi,
I Have solved one of my problems, the one that keep HFM from connecting to the Oracle database.
I just change the TNSNAMES.ORA, like this:
Initial tnsnames.ora
PRUEBA.WORLD=
+(DESCRIPTION_LIST =+
+(DESCRIPTION =+
+(LOAD_BALANACE = ON)+
+(FAILOVER = ON)+
+(ADDRESS_LIST =+
+(ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = <server_name>)(PORT = <port>))+
+)+
+(CONNECT_DATA =+
+(SERVICE_NAME = <service_name>)+
+)+
+)+
+)+
Modified tnsnames.ora
PRUEBA.WORLD=
+(DESCRIPTION =+
+(LOAD_BALANACE = ON)+
+(FAILOVER = ON)+
+(ADDRESS_LIST =+
+(ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = <server_name>)(PORT = <port>))+
+)+
+(CONNECT_DATA =+
+(SERVICE_NAME = <service_name>)+
+)+
+)+
I Just delete the line "+(DESCRIPTION_LIST =+" and its corresponding closing parenthesis, I did this cause in the configuration utility log I saw this line:
+TNS parsing: Entry: DESCRIPTION_LIST [[Address: Protocol:(TCP) Host:(<server_name>) Port:(1521) SID:(<service_name>)]]+
So, if the applications were trying to connect to connection descriptor DESCRIPTION_LIST, the driver could not recognize DESCRIPTION_LIST as a valid one.
There is a lot going on behind the scenes when you work with Oracle Database as the repository, maybe there is some other way to address this issue, but it worked for me, hope it can help you too. -
ORA-12154: TNS:could not resolve the connect identifier specified Oracle 11
I'm having a slight issue with Oracle 11 R2
Oracle 10g was removed from the machine - The registry was cleared and I couldn't see anything of 10g left.
I then installed Oracle 11 with just the software only, and then created a listener.
Using the Database Configuration Assistant, I tried to add a database but I get the error:
'ORA-12154: TNS:could not resolve the connect identifier specified'
The TNS_ADMIN is set to: \\ravel\tnsnames and I can connect to other instances around the company.
My tnsnames entry is:

(DESCRIPTION =
(ADDRESS_LIST =
(ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = gman)(PORT = 1521))
(CONNECT_DATA =
(SERVICE_NAME = ora112)
If i start the listener i get:

This error has just recently started happening, and i cannot figure out why, i have not changed anything in tnsnames.ora file.
i am always able to "test connection" in ODBC. even when i get the error in crystal.
so i restart Crystal, and i am able to connect to db.
strange thing is that always when i do a tnsping to db i always get the message :-
TNS-12541: TNS:no listener
Any ideas ?Re: 08004:[oracle][odbc][ora]ora-12154: TNS: could not resolve the connect ....

Edit Reply
I am receiving a similar error.
Failed to open the connection.
Details: 08004:[Oracle][ODBC][Ora]ORA-12154: TNS:could not resolve the connect identifier specified [Database Vendor Code: 12154]
I've seen all sorts of discussion on the intertubes about possible fixes however, none stated are practical or they do not address my error specifically. I've exhausted resources on the net as well as those available to me.
I'm currently running SAP Crystal Reports 2011 on WIN7 64bit and using Oracle in OraClient 10g_home1.
Please let me know what insight you have. I cannot roll back to previous versions of Windows nor less encryption.
Thank you for your time. -
Hi guys,
I tried to execute a package with Oracle Data Source from Integration Services Catalogs and I got the following error.
ORA-12154: TNS:could not resolve the connect identifier specified
The package runs fine from the SSIS project but once I deploy to SSIS Catalog it fails to run. I need help!
Thanks
meHello ,
The ORA-12154 is a very common error, always related to your local copy of the tnsnames.ora file, your listener configuration and your database name aliases.
Make sure that your listener is listening for the same service name that you are using.
Your service name might have an alias, so check for global (world) entries and local entries. Check:
$ORACLE_HOME/network/admin/tnsnames.ora
Check your global_name setting with this SQL:
select * from global_name;

ORA-12154: TNS:Could not connect to Oracle database.
Hi All,
I'm getting the following error while trying to access OBIEE dashboard.
State: HY000. Code: 10058. [NQODBC] [SQL_STATE: HY000] [nQSError: 10058] A general error has occurred. [nQSError: 17001] Oracle Error code: 12154, message: ORA-12154: TNS:could not resolve the connect identifier specified at OCI call OCIServerAttach. [nQSError: 17014] Could not connect to Oracle database. (HY000)
I have oracle 10g R2, I can connect my database using SQLPLUS. I am not able to do Update Row Count from Admin tool also. If anyone come across this issue, please share your experience. Anyhelp would be appreciated.
Thanks,
RaviThe problem is OBIEE server not able to read the tnsnames.ora file. That depends upon the what you set as ORACLE_HOME. that can be find with tnsping command at command line. Follow this article about setting up oracle home and oci drivers
http://oraclebizint.wordpress.com/2007/10/03/oracle-bi-ee-101332-identifying-oracle-homes-for-oci-drivers/
please make sure that your DB-home is the first entry in your PATH environment variable.
Have you created TNS_ADMIN environment variable. Create a environment variable TNS_ADMIN which maps to location where tnsnames.ora file located.
let me know if you are not able to load after this steps.

Dear Oracles,
I am facing problems while installing Oracle Forms 11g
I read many documentations - and follow many pages during installing - but the same error appears every time
I installed Oracle Web Logic Server wls1035_generic.jar perfectly, and then create a web logic domain through Fusion Middleware config wizard
and test the web server through
http://localhost:7001/console
http://img811.imageshack.us/img811/8558/consoleto.jpg
and then installed Oracle Forms and Reports 11g R2 using ofm_frmrpts_win_11.1.2.0.0_32 3 - Disks
I chose Install S/w only - it was installed successfully
then I opened Configure Classic instance and follow wizard
It stopped at creating domain
every time i try it.
with images to show my problem

]]In addition to Craig's feedback consider the following:
If you did not read the system requirements and installation guide, you likely will have problems.
http://docs.oracle.com/html/E25460_01/r2_fr_requirements.htm
<blockquote>1. Does your machine have a static IP address and/or the Windows Loopback adapter installed and configured?
2. You indicated that you have 2gig of RAM. This is the minimum requirement just to install the product. It is very unlikely that you will be able to comfortably use the product with 2gig of RAM. Likely the performance will be so slow that processes will timeout before they can successfully start. You can actually see this occurring already - look carefully at the log info you posted.
Further, if you are also attempting to run an 11g database on the same machine, this will never happen. Having only 2gig of RAM will never support running the DB and the components of FMw, and the Operating System.</blockquote> -

ORA-12154 TNS could not resolve service name error
Hi
I'm having trouble connecting to database throug sql*plus.I'm able to connect through TOAD but getting 'ORA-12154 TNS could not resolve service name error' when trying to login through sql*plus using same credentials .
I tried running sqlplus through command prompt,but when i enter the user-name i'm getting ORA-12203:TNS:unable to connect to destination.
Can someone help me with this error.
Thanks.It would probably give you an idea where to start looking. You need to make sure that you have the correct .ora files needed for establishing connections. I don't know if your service desk just does the installation but no setup or if they also do the setup configuration. You can also try doing the setup on your own to check. You can use net easy config.

But my service name pass the test of TNSPING.
Please help me and any suggestion is greatly apprieciated.

TonieCheck your tnsnames.ora and make sure that webtogo.world tns entry is correct. The entry should refer to the
correct database service name. -
Discoverer Plus Error: ORA-12154:TNS:could not resolve the
Hi,
I’m running the Discoverer report in Discoverer Plus and getting the below error, but when the same report ran in Desktop completes successfully and the SQL from the report is running without error in SQL nav.
Database Error - ORA-12154:TNS:could not resolve the connect identifier specified.
Thanks in Advance.
SunilHi Sunil,
Did you test the direct method I posted above? That will bypass the tnsnames.ora file. If it connects fine that way, then you likely have a configuration issue with your sqlnet.ora and/or tnsnames.ora
You can test with:
$ORACLE_HOME/bin/tnsping <tnsalias>
If it is successful, then check if you have the TNS_ADMIN environment variable set (echo $TNS_ADMIN) -- assuming Linix/Unix, if Windows, check system environment variables
You may TNS_ADMIN set and pointing to a tnsnames.ora that is not in the default location.
If it fails and your tns entry is correct in the tnsnames.ora file, then you may need to look at the sqlnet.ora
For example,
If you have NAMES.DEFAULT_DOMAIN set.. then you would need enter: <tnsalias>.<domain> (i.e. scott.world)
or you may need to check if TNSNAMES is first in NAMES.DIRECTORY_PATH=
You can remove or rename the sqlnet.ora to make sure that is not an issue.
Hope that helps. Good Luck.

ORA-12154 TNS resolve error with ProC
<p>Hi all,
<br>
<p>
I have a program written in ProC which works fine when it connects to a local database. However, it is unable to connect to a remote database. The code for making the connection is:
<p>
<i>
EXEC SQL BEGIN DECLARE SECTION;<br>
char name[20];<br>
char pwd[20];<br>
char dbname[20];<br>
char dbstring[20];<br>
EXEC SQL END DECLARE SECTION;<br>
strcpy(name, "admin");<br>
strcpy(pwd, "adminadmin");<br>
strcpy(dbname, "userdb");<br>
strcpy(dbstring, "userdb");<br>
EXEC SQL WHENEVER SQLERROR DO printf( "Connection Error = %s", sqlca.sqlerrm.sqlerrmc);<br>
EXEC SQL CONNECT :name IDENTIFIED BY :pwd AT :dbname USING :dbstring;<br>
</i>
<p>
The content of fthe file tnsnames.ora:<br>
<i>
userdb =<br>
(DESCRIPTION =<br>
(ADDRESS_LIST =<br>
(ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = 192.168.30.21)(PORT = 1521))<br>
)<br>
(CONNECT_DATA =<br>
(SID = userdb)<br>
)<br>
)<br>
</i>
<p>
I can "tnsping userdb" and "telnet 192.168.30.21 1521" but the program keeps generating the ORA-12154 connection error.
The version of my oracle client is 9.2.0.1.0
The version of the db server is 8.1.7
Could any one give me some advice please. I had been searching for the solutions for days but failed. Please help. Thanks.<p>
i do a file search "find / -name tnsnames.ora", here is the result:
<p>
/home/oracle/dbscript/database/tnsnames.ora<br>
/u00/app/oracle/product/9.2.0.1.0/network/admin/samples/tnsnames.ora<br>
/u00/app/oracle/product/9.2.0.1.0/network/admin/tnsnames.ora<br>
