Ora-12514 from 8.0.6 home
Hi,
After upgrading my DB from 9.2.0.7 to 10.2.0.3 ( on 11.5.10 ) i am not able to connect to db from my 8.0.6 home.
I am getting ORA-12514
However, tnsping80 PROD works fine.
Can somebody guid me ??
I am on windows, single node.
thx.
Are you able to connect without typing the <SID> (i.e. sqlplus apps/apps)?
Please source the database env file, issue "lsnrctl status", and post the result here.

ORA-12514 when disconnecting from LAN domain
Hi all,
I'm facing issue that when I use Oracle XE locally and when I'm connected to the LAN domain, I can connect successfully to the teh DB but at home or when I'm disconnecting from the LAN, I got the error ORA-12514 from toad and sql plus
I thought that the error was the hostname on tnsname.ora but I already changed it to 127.0.0.1 and also localhost but the same issue appears
Hope that someone can help me on that
Thanks in advance
l12metnsname.ora but I already changed it to 127.0.0.1 and also localhostBoth localhost and 127.0.0.1 are the loopback TCP address, its part of an IP interface but connections to that IP don't go anywhere but the local machine. A working 127.0.0.1 just verifies that TCP is configured- and that's about it for usefulness of localhost|127.0.0.1, or when remote http access is disabled it is the address part of the URL to access Apex.
The tnsnames.ora host= has to have the correct IP address or hostname to connect to the machine where the database is running, as well as the port= for the listener port, and a connect_data ... service_name= or SID= entry to complete the connection string details.
If you're getting a -12514 error the host= and port= are pointing to an address and port with an Oracle listener, so:
A) service_name= or sid= aren't correct in tnsnames.ora
Or
B) host= isn't contacting the correct host. -
Hi,
I restarted my database (RAC). After that I am getting ORA-12514 from second node while trying to connect username/pwd@cs, but it is working in first node.
Can any body will help me.
Regards,

ORA-12514: TNS:listener could not resolve SERVICE_NAME given
Hi
I have 3 server having oracle 9i database same version
-one at head office
-one at ours sister company and
-one at port
when i create string from Gui (SQL*NET configuration head office database)
to connect sister co's database it works well and then i create db
link by using this string its working fi9.
but when i create string from head office to port database
its giving me error when i test string during wizard
Connecting..
ORA-12514: TNS:listener could not resolve SERVICE_NAME given
in connect descriptor
Although from port databse i can connect to head office database succesfully.
I am giving correct machine name and sid during creating string from database SQL*NET configuration wizard.
Why its giving ORA-12514 from Head office to connect port database
but not from Port to Head office database nor from Head office to
sister co's Data base?

ERROR:

My guess is that the database service "HCM" is not up and running but not sure how to make up and running. Even I could not find it listed in the linux services list.
Note: Able to login sqlplus using "sqlplus sys/sys as sysdba" but failing to access database table as "select * from PSRECDEFN;"

I have no luck and the error still persists.
I have set the "export ORACLE_SID=HCM" from root user and oracle user too.
I guess, I have already loaded database when I ran the "cd /opt/oracle/psft/vm
./oraclevm-template.sh"
The outcome of the above script as similar as below:

10g stopped working after 11g installed. Getting ORA-12514: error
I had Oracle 10g installed in win2000 sp2. with port 1521.
I have installed Oracle 11g on the same system. with port 1522.
I am able to start both the instances and tnslistener but I am not able to connect to Oracle10g database. Getting following error.
ORA-12514: TNS:listener does not currently know of service requested in connect
descriptor
I have done the following check.

I am not able to see my tek10g 10g database details.
I also checked my tnsnames.ora file which has the entries properly.
Sqlnet.ora file has
SQLNET.AUTHENTICATION_SERVICES= (NTS)
NAMES.DIRECTORY_PATH= (TNSNAMES, EZCONNECT)
How to solve this issue? Is that possible to run oracle 10g and oracle 11g in same host?
Thanks in Advance...
regards,
ManikandanThe approach I would take, in general is:
1) pick a listener, and only one. Get that working.
2) Make sure all the databases register to that listener
3) Fix the TNSNAMES.ORA files appropriately.
To fix the listener
1) Verify the listener address matches the current environment

(DESCRIPTION_LIST =
(DESCRIPTION =

(ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = myHOST)(PORT = myPORT))
)where
myHOST is this host's resolvable name or IP address
myPORT is the port (default 1521) that the listener should monitor
The HOST is often a problem if the machine uses DHCP.
2) Register the databases
On startup, database will auto-register to the listener defined in the init parameter 'LOCAL_LISTENER', which defaults to 'HOST={current_host}, PORT=1521'
After startup, if the listener is taken down, you can register each database manually using the DBA command
ALTER SYSTEM REGISTER;
Either way, it should show up in the output of 'lsnrctl status'
While you are accessing the database, you might want to find out which services the database supports. That can be done in SQLPlus using the command
SHOW PARAMETER SERVICE_NAMES
Note that the database name is the default service name.
3) Fix [all] the TNSNAMES.ORA file[s].
Each SERVICE_NAME from the previous list that you want to access from this client, yu should find an entry that looks like
myTEST =
(DESCRIPTION =
(ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = myHOST)(PORT = myPORT))
(CONNECT_DATA =
(SERVER = DEDICATED)
(SERVICE_NAME = mySERVICE)
myTEST is the alias I want to look up by using it as the connect target string.
myHOST should match the HOST= entry in the LISTENER.ORA
myPORT MUST match the PORT= entry in the LISTENER.ORA
mySERVICE is the Service to which I am asking the listener to connect me, as found in the lsnrctl status output -

Other versions may or may not work - so fixing any errors that result from unsupported/uncertified combinations is up to you.

Can't start up after shutdown - ORA-12514
Hi -
I installed 11gR2 on RHEL 5.4, creating a database during installation.
After shutting down via SQLPlus (remotely), I found I am unable to startup.
Attempts to startup via SQLPlus fail with: ORA-12514: TNS:listener does not currently know of service requested in connect descriptor.
However, I am able to startup via Enterprise Manager.
I have been viewing similar threads but cannot seem to get the issue resolved.

I have tried to add a static entry (below) to my listener, ora file, but this not does not solve the issue and prevents starting up even via EM until the entry is removed:
ELF =
(DESCRIPTION =

(CONNECT_DATA =
(SERVER = DEDICATED)

All else (so far) seems to be functioning normally and I have encountered only this issue.
Any input would be greatly appreciated.
S Rosen.

ORA-12514 Error in remote office
I installed and created a 10g (rel2) database while connected to my office's network. Because my company uses DHCP I had to create a loopback connector and give it a fixed IP address. Everything went as expected.
Now I've travelled to a remote location and, even though the Oracle instance is on my laptop, I'm getting an ORA-12514 error (TNS:listener does not currently know of service requested in connect string). I'm using Windows XP Pro and this is what I get from doing a lsnrctl status:
LSNRCTL for 32-bit Windows: Version 10.2.0.1.0 - Production on 14-JAN-2008 14:29:25

As you can see, it isn't creating a service for anything other than the EXTPROC entry. I tried doing a TNSPING on the SID (LAKOTA) and got this:
TNS Ping Utility for 32-bit Windows: Version 10.1.0.4.2 - Production on 14-JAN-2

OK (40 msec)
So now I'm stumped. I've tried stopping and starting the listener, but nothing changed. Is it because I'm physically connected to a different network than when I installed the software and created the database? If that's the case, is there a work-around because I'm going to be travelling a LOT more than I'm going to be in the home office and I need access to my oracle instance no matter where I am or what backbone I'm connected to. Any and all assistance gratefully appreciated.
Leigh SmithYou are trying to connect to a service named: lakota.cgifederal.com but from the output of the listener status it can be seen that the instance has not yet been registered against the listener. Your listener is at 1521 port, this means that can be self registered against it. Just make sure your instance is started.
There is a command to force instance registration, it is from the sql command prompt connected with either sys or system issue: alter system register Automatic instance registration should take less than a minute, if after the time has expired and issuing the command don't work, then if required, instead of relying on automatic instance registration, you can change it to be manually configured. ORA-12514 Error when using Net Configuration Assistant
I have recently installed Oracle 11g on a Windows 2008 server and am now trying to connect via the Oracle client on my local machine.
Here is how I've been using Net Configuration Assistant so far:
Listener Configuration
The name of my listener is LISTENER_PROXIMA (proxima is the name of the server). Does this need to be named something else? Something specific?
I'm using TCP to connect.
I'm using standard port 1521.
Naming Methods
Local Naming and Easy Connect Naming
Local Net Service Name
Service name is ADMI04 (checked this against the lsnrstl service status on the server and it's correct)
Using TCP
Using the hostname proxima.domain-name.com
I'm attempting to connect as SYS (but have tried others with the same result)
When I go to test the connection I keep getting the ORA-12514 error. Does anyone know what I should do? Reinstall the listener? If so, are there any suggestions or guidance for that?
Thank you.=================================
A couple of important points.
First, the listener is a server side only process. It's entire purpose in life is to receive requests for connections to databases and set up those connections. Once the connection is established, the listener is out of the picture. It creates the connection. It doesn't sustain the connection. One listener, with the default name of LISTENER, running from one oracle home, listening on a single port, will serve multiple database instances of multiple versions running from multiple homes. It is an unnecessary complexity to try to have multiple listeners or to name the listener as if it belongs to a particular database. That would be like the telephone company building a separate switchboard for each customer.
Second, the tnsnames.ora file is a client side issue. It's purpose is for address resolution - the tns equivalent of the 'hosts' file further down the network stack. The only reason it exists on a host machine is because that machine can also run client processes.
Assume you have the following in your tnsnames.ora:
larry =
(DESCRIPTION =
(ADDRESS_LIST =
(ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = myhost)(PORT = 1521))
(CONNECT_DATA =
(SERVICE_NAME = curley)
)Now, when you issue a connect, say like this:
$> sqlplus scott/tiger@larrytns will look in your tnsnames.ora for an entry called 'larry'. Next, tns sends a request to (PORT = 1521) on (HOST = myhost) using (PROTOCOL = TCP), asking for a connection to (SERVICE_NAME = curley).
Where is (HOST = myhost) on the network? When the request gets passed from tns to the next layer in the network stack, the name 'myhost' will get resolved to an IP address, either via a local 'hosts' file, via DNS, or possibly other less used mechanisms. You can also hard-code the ip address (HOST = 123.456.789.101) in the tnsnames.ora.
Next, the request arrives at port 1521 on myhost. Hopefully, there is a listener on myhost configured to listen on port 1521, and that listener knows about SERVICE_NAME = curley. If so, you'll be connected.
What can go wrong?
First, there may not be an entry for 'larry' in your tnsnames. In that case you get "ORA-12154: TNS:could not resolve the connect identifier specified" No need to go looking for a problem on the host, with the listener, etc. If you can't place a telephone call because you don't know the number (can't find your telephone directory (tnsnames.ora) or can't find the party you are looking for listed in it (no entry for larry)) you don't look for problems at the telephone switchboard.
Maybe the entry for larry was found, but myhost couldn't be resolved to an IP address (say there was no entry for myhost in the local hosts file). This will result in "ORA-12545: Connect failed because target host or object does not exist"
Maybe there was an entry for myserver in the local hosts file, but it specified a bad IP address. This will result in "ORA-12545: Connect failed because target host or object does not exist"
Maybe the IP was good, but there is no listener running: "ORA-12541: TNS:no listener"
Maybe the IP was good, there is a listener at myhost, but it is listening on a different port. "ORA-12560: TNS:protocol adapter error"
Maybe the IP was good, there is a listener at myhost, it is listening on the specified port, but doesn't know about SERVICE_NAME = curley. "ORA-12514: TNS:listener does not currently know of service requested in connect descriptor"

10g Installation and Error : ORA-12514 : Listerner cant recog. service requ
Hi,
I installed 10g, and trying to start sql plus. I entered
username: orcl
password: my own password
host string: name of my computer
I am getting the error: ORA-12514: TNS: Listener does not currently know of service orequested in connect descriptor.
I started the services and tried again but same problem.
I also tried system and sysman as username, w/o a password and included my computer name, but still facing the same problem.
Any thing else I should do besides uninstalling and reinstalling ?
ThanksWhere did the user name orcl come from? It certainly is not going to be there unless you logged in with a DBA account and created it: Did you?
So back to basics ... what version of Oracle did you install? 10g is a marketing label not a version number. It is likely something between 10.1.0.2 and 10.2.0.4.
Second how did you install the database? With the Oracle Universal Installer or with a script? Were there any error messages?
Have you checked the installation log?
Has it ever worked in the past and is now broken or has it never worked?
Is the listener running? How did you check?
When you say "I started the service" you are in what operating system and you started what service and how?
My guess, and it is only a wild guess given how little information you provided, is that there is an issue in your listener.ora and/or tnsnames.ora files: Post them along with the value you are entering as "Host" when you try to log in.
Again just a guess ... the user name should be SYSTEM, the password whatever you entered, and the Host "orcl." -
