ORA-24801: illegal parameter value in OCI lob function

Passing a null value or a null string as the value for a CLOB parameter, when executing a procedure or function, generates the error message 'ORA-24801: illegal parameter value in OCI lob function'. Passing a non-null string such as ' ' does not, does anyone have a solution to this problem?

I guess that export utility does not export LOB's columns.

Hi,
I am trying to insert an xml doc into a column of Oracle table which has a datatype CLOB in JSP. PFB my code that I am using --
int id = 100;
String st1 = "NEW";
String st2 = "WLR3_IN_1";
Date dt = new SimpleDateFormat("mm/dd/yyyy").parse("04/02/2008");
Class.forName("sun.jdbc.odbc.JdbcOdbcDriver");
con = DriverManager.getConnection("jdbc:odbc:CST Server","xmluser","xmluser");
String query = "INSERT INTO SEQ_API_MESSAGE_IN(SEQ_NO,MESSAGE_TEXT,STATUS,DIALECT,CREATED_TS) VALUES(?,?,?,?,?)";
out.println(6);
String fn = "C:/order.xml";
out.println(7);
PreparedStatement stmt = con.prepareStatement(query);
out.println(8);
File file = new File(fn);
out.println(9);
FileReader inputFileReader = new FileReader(file);
stmt.setInt(1,id);
stmt.setCharacterStream(2,inputFileReader, (long)file.length());
stmt.setString(3,st1);
stmt.setString(4,st2);
stmt.setDate(5,new java.sql.Date(dt.getTime()));
out.println(10);
if (stmt.executeUpdate() != 1) {

But I am getting an output in the form of an Oracle error - 5 6 7 8 9 10 [Oracle][ODBC][Ora]ORA-24801: illegal parameter value in OCI lob function
So all the statements are getting executed after which this Oracle error is thrown. Could you help me with this.
Thanks in anticipation.. :)

As suggested I may try switching to JDBC instead of JDBC-ODBC bridge driver , but I also tried doing this to get the sysdate --
//Date dt = new SimpleDateFormat("mm/dd/yyyy").parse("04/02/2008");
String date = DateFormat.getInstance().format(new Date());
stmt.setString(5,date);
and now I am getting this error -- 5 6 7 8 9 10 [Oracle][ODBC][Ora]ORA-01843: not a valid month Hello1
Hello1 is coming from --
catch (SQLException sqle){
out.println(sqle.getMessage());
out.print("Hello1");

• Error while exporting : ORA-24801: illegal parameter value in OCI lob funct

hello,
I am doing an export on a 10.2.0.4 , solaris machine.
The table i am doing an export has a blob & clob.
During the export I get the error :
EXP-00056: ORACLE error 24801 encountered
ORA-24801: illegal parameter value in OCI lob function
In metalink it was given : Check every parameter in the OCI Lob function call to make sure they
are correct. Offsets should be greater than or equal to one.
Where should I check for that OCI Lob function. Or is there any other alternative to do the export.
Thanks for any help.

I have increased the space on the mount I was doing the export and that solved the problem.
Thanks

• Error in Report ORA-24801

Hi All,
I am trying to run a report containing the images stored in blob column in database 10g, while running the report I got following error ..
ORA-24801: illegal parameter value in OCI lob function
Cause: One of the parameter values in the OCI lob function is illegal.
Action: Check every parameter in the OCI Lob function call to make sure they are correct. Offsets should be greater than or equal to one.
I didn't understand with this the cause and the solution of error....Any body could please tell what exactly it means and what we should do.
Any help will be highly appriciated.
Best Regards

Hi Don,
The reason why i posted the item on 'data Connectivity issues' is because i suspect the problem is with the connection string.Though i had provided the correct connection string,re-writing the connection string with the same info might help to fix the issue with loading the report.
Does it mean that there is a problem in the connectivity?
I have a risk here that i cant re-write the connection string..i.e to open the RPT file in VS2005 and bind it.The production web server & database server sits in a third party environment and it is not in the company network.So i cant connect to this server to re-write from any other severs in the network.
Is there any fix which can applied to the server to get this issue resolved?
Cheers
Nithya.

• Getting ORA-24801: error when reading a CLOB data using BufferReader

I am getting the "ORA-24801: illegal parameter value in OCI lob function", when reading a CLOB using a BufferedReader, i am using "oracle.jdbc.OracleDriver" for creating a connection pool and using Oracle 9.2.0.7 with Weblogic 8.1 SP 5. My code looks like this,
oracle.sql.CLOB c_lob = null;
c_lob = ( oracle.sql.CLOB)stmt.getClob(7);
BufferedReader in1 = new BufferedReader(c_lob.getCharacterStream());
char buffer[] = new char[1];
int i;
while((i = in1.read(buffer)) != -1)
The error is coming at "in1.read(buffer)".

Hi,
Your buffer size should be the clob size.
char[] buffer = new char[c_lob.getBufferSize()];
Also, set the value for i as -1.
You could see the sample on OTN for help:

As per BIP10g documentation the definition of a parameter in a template can only contain ONE default value:
http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E12844_01/doc/bip.1013/e12187/T421739T481157.htm#4535391
The rest of the values for the parameter should be defined in your report definition, see:
http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E12844_01/doc/bip.1013/e12187/T518230T518233.htm#4511631

I believe if you want to set this to null, you need to use double quotes, (as in os_authent_prefix="")

To disable this feature, place the following lines in the initialization file, or change the lines to the following if they already exist and bounce the database.
os_authent_prefix = ""
remote_os_authent = FALSE

• ORA-12705 Invalid or unknown NLS_LANG parameter value specified

Hi,
I am trying to connect to a remote Oracle 8i database using TOAD.I have Oracle 8i and 9i installed on Windows XP Professional.I am able to connect via SQL*PlUS and OEM.Initially I was able to connect with TOAD.Then I changed the environment variable NLS_LANG to the server setting and afterwards unset it.I haven't been able to connect to remote db via TOAD since and get the following error:
ORA-12705:Invalid or unknown NLS_LANG parameter value specified
I have unset the value of NLS_LANG in the registery settings of both the Oracle homes.it is not set in environment also.I have exhausted the resources but haven't been able to come up with an explanation and solution.please help.

When I connect TOAD with 9i as ORACLE_HOME, it connects fine but when I try to connect with 8i as ORACLE_HOME, I get the ORA-12705 error.does this mean there is some wrong setting in 8i Home? I have removed NLS_LANG setting from the 8i Home registry setting. Any help will be greatly appreciated.Thanks.

• Multiple selection of parameter values (BIP 10.1.3.2)

Hi there,
I'm working with BI Publisher 10.1.3.2 and I'd like to use parameters allowing multiple selection. I've tried it with both data templates and SQL queries ... but I'm not getting it work ...
I've established a simple "Show me department name and id"-example according to my parameter selection (you can select multiple values e.g. Administration, Marketing, Sales ... and the "All"-option is activated as well), based on the HR/OE schema.
Here's just a quick note, where I tested the way the Publisher Engine copes with parameter selection in general
5.6.2
single selection => e.g. Administration
multiple selection => e.g. Administration,Marketing
All => *
10.1.3.2
single selection => e.g. Administration
multiple selection => e.g. 'Administration','Marketing'
All => null
So, in 10.1.3.2 there's been an improvement concerning single quotes - in the case of multiple selection only. I do not know why there are no single quotes for a single selection, but it seems like that's the way it is ...
Well, I've created a simple SQL query as follows:
CASE 1 *
select DEPARTMENT_ID as ID, DEPARTMENT_NAME as NAME
from DEPARTMENTS
where DEPARTMENT_NAME IN (:myParameter)
=> All does not work
=> Single Selection is working
=> Multiple Selection is working
sample output in the case of selecting "Marketing" (single selection):
<TESTINGIN>
<myParameter>Marketing</myParameter>
<LIST_DEPTS>
<DEPTS>
<_MYPARAMETER>Marketing</_MYPARAMETER>

</DEPTS>
</LIST_DEPTS>
</TESTINGIN>
... and I've tried the same select statement using a data template instead, and then I got another result: both, All and Multiple Selection, do not work (I'm getting back an empty element)
sample (error) output in the case of selecting both "Marketing" and "Administration" (multiple selection):
<TESTINGIN>
<myParameter>'Administration','Marketing'</myParameter>
<LIST_DEPTS></LIST_DEPTS>
</TESTINGIN>
In order to cover the "All"-case ... I manipulated my select statement as follows and used it as SQL query:
CASE 2 *
select DEPARTMENT_ID as ID, DEPARTMENT_NAME as NAME
from DEPARTMENTS
where DEPARTMENT_NAME IN (nvl(:myParameter, DEPARTMENT_NAME))
=> All is working now
=> Singe selection is working
=> Multiple selection is not working any more (ORA-00909: Ungültige Anzahl von Argumenten / illegal amount of arguments)
... using the same select statement within a data template, Multiple Selection is still not working (empty element)
Last, I've tried another select statement, based on an entry of the xml publisher forum:
CASE 3 *
select DEPARTMENT_ID as ID, DEPARTMENT_NAME as NAME
from DEPARTMENTS
where DEPARTMENT_NAME IN (:myParameter) or :myParameter IS NULL
=> All is working
=> Singe selection is working
=> Multiple selection is not working (ORA-00920: Ungültiger relationaler Operator / illegal relational operator)
So, I couldn't find a way that all three possibilities are working ... and using data templates, multiple selection never worked. If I hardcoded the where clause in the data template,
e.g. where DEPARTMENT_NAME IN ('Administration','Marketing'), it worked fine (no matter, whether I place the sql statement within an CDATA section, or not).
Can anyone tell me, what I'm doing wrong here?
While testing my problem, I figured out that there's a difference of generated parameter output ... I just put the parameter in the select list, and depending on whether you use SQL query or data template, you'll get different results:
SQL statement
=> for each parameter value an own parameter
<_MYPARAMETER>Administration</_MYPARAMETER> in the case of single selection
<_MYPARAMETER8093>Administration</_MYPARAMETER8093>
<_MYPARAMETER8094>Marketing</_MYPARAMETER8094> in the case of multiple selection
data Template
=> list of parameter values
<_MYPARAMETER>Administration</_MYPARAMETER> in the case of single selection
<_MYPARAMETER>'Administration','Marketing'</_MYPARAMETER> in the case of multiple selection
Maybe that's the problem? I don't know, this difference how the Publisher Engine copes with parameters just attracted attention to me ...
Alright, I hope it was not too confusing. I would appreciate any help, since here @ the customer's site we need to use data templates inclduing multiple selection in order to establish a context for VPD.
The problems in summary:
- how to write a select statement to include all three possibilites of parameter selection (single selection, multiple selection, All option)
- multiple selection never worked using data templates
Can someone help me here?

hi,
i think you have to use lexical parameters and a package, like this:
<dataTemplate name="departments" dataSourceRef="hr@demo" defaultPackage="bip_departments">
<parameters>
<parameter name="p_location_id" include_in_output="false" datatype="float"/>
</parameters>
<dataTrigger name="beforeReport" source="bip_departments.beforeReportTrigger"/>
<dataQuery>
<sqlStatement name="Q1">
select d.department_id, d.department_name, d.location_id
from departments d
&p_where_clause
order by location_id, department_id
</sqlStatement>
</dataQuery>
<dataStructure>
<group name="LOC" source="Q1">
<element name="location_id" value="location_id"/>
<group name="DEPT" source="Q1">
<element name="department_id" value="department_id"/>
<element name="department_name" value="department_name"/>
</group>
</group>
</dataStructure>
</dataTemplate>
with package:
create or replace package bip_departments
as
p_location_id long;
p_where_clause long;
function beforereporttrigger
return boolean;
end bip_departments;
create or replace package body bip_departments
as

• Unable to capture the parameter values from a PL/SQL procedure

hi.
i'm trying to capture the parameter values of a PL/SQL procedure by calling inside a anonymous block but i'm getting a "reference to uninitialized collection error" ORA-06531.
Please help me regarding.
i'm using following block for calling the procedure.
declare
err_cd varchar2(1000);
err_txt VARCHAR2(5000);
no_of_recs number;
out_sign_tab search_sign_tab_type:=search_sign_tab_type(search_sign_type(NULL,NULL,NULL,NULL,NULL));
cntr_var number:=0;
begin
rt843pq('DWS','3000552485',out_sign_tab,no_of_recs,err_cd,err_txt);
dbms_output.put_line('The error is ' ||err_cd);
dbms_output.put_line('The error is ' ||err_txt);
dbms_output.put_line('The cntr is ' ||cntr_var);
for incr in 1 .. OUT_SIGN_TAB.count
loop
cntr_var := cntr_var + 1 ;
Dbms_output.put_line(OUT_SIGN_TAB(incr).ref_no||','||OUT_SIGN_TAB(incr).ciref_no||','||OUT_SIGN_TAB(incr).ac_no||','||OUT_SIGN_TAB(incr).txn_type||','||OUT_SIGN_TAB(incr).objid);
end loop;
end;
Error is thrown on "for incr in 1 .. OUT_SIGN_TAB.count" this line
Following is some related information.
the 3rd parameter of the procedure is a out parameter. it is a type of a PL/SQL table (SEARCH_SIGN_TAB_TYPE) which is available in database as follows.
TYPE "SEARCH_SIGN_TAB_TYPE" IS TABLE OF SEARCH_SIGN_TYPE
TYPE "SEARCH_SIGN_TYPE" AS OBJECT
(ref_no VARCHAR2(22),
ciref_no VARCHAR2(352),
ac_no VARCHAR2(22),
txn_type VARCHAR2(301),
objid VARCHAR2(1024))............

We don't have your rt843pq procedure, but when commenting that line out, everything works:
SQL> create TYPE "SEARCH_SIGN_TYPE" AS OBJECT
2  (ref_no VARCHAR2(22),
3  ciref_no VARCHAR2(352),
4  ac_no VARCHAR2(22),
5  txn_type VARCHAR2(301),
6  objid VARCHAR2(1024))
7  /
Type is aangemaakt.
SQL> create type "SEARCH_SIGN_TAB_TYPE" IS TABLE OF SEARCH_SIGN_TYPE
2  /
Type is aangemaakt.
SQL> declare
2    err_cd varchar2(1000);
3    err_txt VARCHAR2(5000);
4    no_of_recs number;
5    out_sign_tab search_sign_tab_type:=search_sign_tab_type(search_sign_type(NULL,NULL,NULL,NULL,NULL));
6    cntr_var number:=0;
7  begin
8    -- rt843pq('DWS','3000552485',out_sign_tab,no_of_recs,err_cd,err_txt);
9    dbms_output.put_line('The error is ' ||err_cd);
10    dbms_output.put_line('The error is ' ||err_txt);
11    dbms_output.put_line('The cntr is ' ||cntr_var);
12    for incr in 1 .. OUT_SIGN_TAB.count
13    loop
14      cntr_var := cntr_var + 1 ;
15      Dbms_output.put_line(OUT_SIGN_TAB(incr).ref_no||','||OUT_SIGN_TAB(incr).ciref_no||','||OUT_SIGN_TAB(incr).ac_no||','||OUT_SIGN
TAB(incr).txntype||','||OUT_SIGN_TAB(incr).objid);
16    end loop;
17  end;
18  /
The error is
The error is
The cntr is 0
PL/SQL-procedure is geslaagd.Regards,
Rob.

• ORA-01741: illegal zero-length identifier

Hi Friends,
I am facing a weird situation while creating a report with region having type as SQL Query(PL/SQL function body returning SQL Query).
I have a package function which takes 4 parameters and returns a SQL query in a varchar2 variable.
Now when I have the following code in my region source and on applying changes is showing ORA-01741: illegal zero-length identifier
DECLARE
l_query VARCHAR2 (5000);
BEGIN
SELECT apx_dashboard_pkg.f_int_monthly_grid (:p5_1, :p5_2, :p5_3, :p5_4)
INTO l_query
FROM DUAL;
RETURN l_query;
END;
If I change my code as below by passing values and run, then it does the job perfect.
DECLARE
l_query VARCHAR2 (5000);
BEGIN
SELECT apx_dashboard_pkg.f_int_monthly_grid(200712,
'IC',
3,
'AVARO'
INTO l_query
FROM DUAL;
RETURN l_query;
END;
I have no clue where I am doing wrong.
Please help me.
Thanks,
Raj.

Thanks guys for your responses.
Varad,
I have tried with 'Generic Column Names' and it worked wonderfully.
Scott,
I would definitely consider your point because it might be the reason for erroring out in some of my pages in the application.
Thanks a lot.

• How to omit parameter values from exceptions thrown by the JDBC driver

Is there a way to get the Oracle JDBC driver to omit the parameter values from the message when it throws an exception?
We have an application that persists credit cards and when an exception is thrown by the driver, it's including the credit card number in the error message, which ultimately gets logged by the application. There are too many layers and locations, including OpenJPA, Spring, and our own application, where we'd have to massage the error data to remove that card number.
For example, we get the following exception:
Caused by: org.apache.renamed.openjpa.lib.jdbc.ReportingSQLException: ORA-20104: Permission denied
ORA-06512: at "PROTEGRITY.PTY", line 57
ORA-06512: at "PROTEGRITY.PTY", line 383
ORA-06512: at "SUBSDSYS.TORDERPAYMENT_UPD", line 16
ORA-04088: error during execution of trigger 'SUBSDSYS.TORDERPAYMENT_UPD'
{prepstmnt 6603044
UPDATE PAYMENT
SET CARD_HOLDER_NAME = ?, CARD_TYPE = ?, EXPIRY_MONTH = ?, EXPIRY_YEAR = ?, GATEWAY = ?
WHERE UIDPK = ?
[params=(String) Test Test, (String) VISA, (String) 03, (String) 2012, (String) CREDITCARD, (long) 106901]} [code=20104, state=72000]

at org.apache.renamed.openjpa.lib.jdbc.LoggingConnectionDecorator.access$800(LoggingConnectionDecorator.java:57)
The actual content of the message appears to come from the JDBC driver, not OpenJPA.
This particular example doesn't show the card number, but only exposed that possibility as a risk.
BTW: before you ask, for PCI compliance we're using a database layer service to encrypt the card numbers before they're stored in the table.
Thanks much.

I would start looking at the source code starting here:
org.apache.renamed.openjpa.lib.jdbc.LoggingConnectionDecorator.wrap(LoggingConnectionDecorator.java:192)
