Ora 9I + sort_area_size

Hy,
is the parameter sort_area_size usefull with ora9i ? i've set ma DB with workarea_policy=auto and with pga_aggregate_target=367001600 ( a big DB) and some sort are always on disk.
Laurent

sort_area_size not relevant under 9i when using dedicated servers. If you are using shared servers than it applies. Under automatic work area size management, any one operation is limited to 5% of pga_aggregate_target or 18350080 in your case. If you want a larger sort area then either raise pga_aggregate_target or do as Harry suggests and set workarea_size_policy to manual and set sort_area_size greater than 18350080 at the session level using ALTER SESSION.

  • SORT_AREA_SIZE and PGA_AGGREGATE_TARGET

I am using SAP R/3 kernel 4.6D with oracle 10g.
I found that in init.ora file SORT_AREA_SIZE is still defined even if the PGA_AGGREGATE_TARGET is defined and since the datbase is 10G WORK_AREA_SIZE_POLICY is by default auto.
I would like to know is the SORT_AREA_SIZE is required specifically (I mean to say whether SAP uses anywhere in its application "alter session set workarea_size_policy = manual;" kinda statement?) for SAP otherwise automatic PGA management is supposed to manage the scenario...
    Shall I remove SORT_AREA_SIZE  from the init.ora?
    Regards,

SORT_AREA_SIZE is no longer required in SAP environments as soon as you set WORKAREA_SIZE_POLICY = AUTO.
    Kind regards

  • 9i performance issues in windows 2000

I have imported the database from 8.0.5 to 9i recently and have been facing performance degradation although 9i is running in a better server with more memory and processor speed.
The same application, use to run more efficiently with lesser db_block_buffers & shared_pool parameters.
I have modified various parameters recommended to run 9i on win 2000 but still there is no great improvement.
One of the key area where I suspect the problem could be is, I see more wait in control file parallel writes/reads events.
Can someone help me out on this. Also it will be more useful if someone can help me to find a document to optimize win 2000 for 9i.
    Thanks
    Ram

Did you reanalyze all your objects using a large sample size?
With every upgrade a few queries could change plans and the plan changes are not always for the best. Just one or two poorly performing queries could adversely affect the entire system.
Have you reviewed your physical and logical IO hog lists to be sure that you just do not need to tune a couple of queries.
Remember also that at least 6 common init.ora parameters affect CBO choices and you should look very carefully at any changes made to the init.ora (db_file_multiblock_read_count, sort_area_size, hash_join_enabled, optimizer_index_caching, optimizer_index_cost_adj)
Finally a big part of overall database performance is disk layout and performance. Even with a faster cpu and more memory if your reduced the number of spindals available to support your db activity you could have shot yourself in the foot (so to speak).

  • Importing a huge Dump

    Hello all,
I am importing a dump of size 17 GB (Production server dump). Its running pretty slow. Can anyone tell me how much sizes I should give for rollback, redo etc. Request any way of improving import performance.
    Regards,
    Ravi Duvvuri

In addition to what's been said the following should help too.
    1. Use the export parameter commit=n - this will cause a commit to happen after each object instead of after each buffer.
    2. If possible increase greatly increase the init.ora parameter sort_area_size. For my databases I'll increase this from 128kb to 6mb.
    3. Increase the init.ora parameter db_block_buffers. Try increasing this by 25-50% if possible.
2 and 3 above may be irrelevant if you're using 9i or greater and have memory dynamically allocated.
In my experience commit=n buffers=xxxxxx and setting the sort_area_size and db_block_buffers have had the most dramitic effects of increasing import performance. I've seen import times drop in half in certain instances.
If you have metalink access look for document 93763.1 - Tuning Considerations When Import Is Slow for more information.

    SYS.3.2 TEMPORARY 946160.00 KB Andy,
A couple things to check first. What is you setting in the init.ora for sort_area_size and sort_area_retained_size? Whatever they are, try to increase them a lot. You probably have a lot of writes to disk in the TEMP tablespace as opposed to keeping this sorted data in memory. I see you have pctincrease set to 1 which is good as it is supposed to signal SMON to clean up. If SMON is not, there are a couple other options. Shutdown the db. OK not always an option but it works. Second is to create another smaller TEMP tablespace and bring it online and redirect user to that tbs, then offline immediate and drop the original and recreate it, and then point users back to it. You could also make it completely temporary by assigning it a TEMP file rather than a datafile. But considr to inability to recover in case of a crash before doing this.
This problem is experienced by almost every DBA and is considered a 'feature' not a 'bug' by Oracle. OK but if you think about what Oracle actually does compared to what it could do 10 years ago you wouldn't complain so much.
If I were you, I'd increase sort-area-size and sort-area-retained-size to help sorts stay in memory as opposed to being written to disk. Then consider dropping and recreatin the tbs either manually or through a nightly script/job so it doesn't grow out of control
    Hope this helps

  • ORA-12500 and sort_area_size value

    Hi,
I've hit an ORA-12500 'listener failed to start a dedicated server process' error after the increase of sort_area_size from 250M to 500M. DB server has plenty of RAM which would easily accomodate additinal memory for PGA. Has anyone experinced that before? Thanks.

There's (normally) no need to set SORT_AREA_SIZE, when a PGA is configured. From the parameter reference:
Oracle does not recommend using the SORT_AREA_SIZE parameter unless the instance is configured with the shared server option. Oracle recommends that you enable automatic sizing of SQL working areas by setting PGA_AGGREGATE_TARGET instead. SORT_AREA_SIZE is retained for backward compatibility.

  • ORA-04030: out of process memory when using Java Stored Procedures

    Hello,
I have a problem using Java Stored Procedures in Oracle 10g.
My Java application performs http posts to a webservice and the response is parsed in order to populate some DB tables.
There is a scheduled job which calls the Java Stored Procedure every x minutes.
No matter of the 'x minutes' values - after about 160 - 200 calls I get this error:
ORA-04030: out of process memory when trying to allocate 1048620 bytes (joxp heap,f:OldSpace)
ORA-04030: out of process memory when trying to allocate 2097196 bytes (joxp heap,f:OldSpace)
The job stops just while is posting the http request. The weird thing is that almost each time the first http post request I get this error:

    Tech details:
    1. OS: WinXP
    2. Oracle 10.1.0.2.0
    3. To perform http post I use HttpClient 3.1 from Apache.
    4. I checked the http connection to be closed each time, and this is done.
    5. I checked the oracle statement and connection to be closed each time and this is done
    6. The JVM error (logged in .trc files of Oracle) is:

Can be a problem with JVM threading under Oracle ?

The server prcess failed to allocate more memory for large objects ( in Oldspace).
If you Google ORA-04030, you will see several recommendations to work around this.
The Java VM in the database already has HttpClient, i don't know why you are loading the Apache HttpClient but this might not be the surce of the problem.

  • Error ORA-01652 while running select query

A select query returning millions of records is returning the following error.
    SQL Error [
ORA-01652: unable to extend temp segment by 128 in tablespace TEMP
We requested DBA to increased the TEMP tablespace. He increased it to 20GB and also, changed to Autoextent.
When we executed the query again, we got the same error ?
What could be the reason of this issue and how it can be resolved ?

All sort operations that don't fit into the SORT_AREA_SIZE will go to the temp tablespace (they can be seen as direct writes in the trace file).
It can easy be the case, that your temp tablespace needs to be many GB in size [we have a table with millions of rows and for the loading/merging our temp is 80GB in size].
May be you can change your process of loading i.e. with this select you fill a intermediate table (with CTAS) and do your processing there or even try to do the processing in SQL while building the table. You could also try to do the processing with a cursor and BULK COLLECT LIMIT 100 and then inserting into the target table with the FORALL statement.

    hello satish,
thank you for your kind advice. the reason i posted this is because we have been having this issue for a long time. and so far its been a chicken-egg issue, maybe its hardware, or the application, or the OS, etc..etc..
so, i am looking for any experiences with the 600 error, perhaps similar to mine.

  • Getting ORA-32700 while creating database

I am getting following error when creating the database :
ORA-32700 error occurred in DIAG Group Service
The error description is as follows :
Cause: An unexpected error occurred while performing a DIAG Group Service operation.
Action: Verify that the DIAG process is still active. Also, check the Oracle DIAG trace files for errors.
The setup is as follows :
    Database : Oracle 9i Rel 2.
    OS : IBM AIX 4.3.3
We are trying to create the database from sqlplus/dbca. It seems that in the database creation process it is throwing the error while it is trying to create the control files.
    listener.ora :
    LSNR_TSEDMDB2 =
    (DESCRIPTION_LIST =
    (DESCRIPTION =
    (ADDRESS_LIST =
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = prcsmbk1)(PORT = 1522))
    TNSNAMES.ORA
    LISTENER_TSEDMDB2 =
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = prcsmbk1)(PORT = 1522))
We have IBM HACMP Cluster setup on 3 machines. This machine (prcsmbk1) on which I am getting the error while creating the database is part of that HACMP cluster. While installing the Oracle database software also it gave me a list of the 3 machines which are in HACMP cluster. We are not planning to setup RAC, but still it seems like while creating the database control files Oracle is trying to perform some group service operation.

Thanks a lot for all your responses. We found the issue. The issue was that when we installed 9i we selected Enterprise option which installed RAC also. And after that when we were trying to create database Oracle was thinking that we are trying to create database in RAC env. and most likely it was trying to create/sync the control files on all the machines in the cluster.
The sequence of events were as below :
    1. We have 8i installed on this machine
    2. We installed 9i (9.2.0.1.0) using the same ORACLE_BASE but different ORACLE_HOME. We didn't select "Custom Install". We selected "Enterprise install" option
    3. We installed new installer (2.2.0.18.0 ) and then 9i patch (9.2.0.4.0)
    4. While creating the database (manually & through DBCA) we were getting ORA-32700
    5. We tried to uninstall (using OUI 2.2.0.18.0) 9i (including the patch) completely but it never succeeded. We noticed that when we started uninstall it did show progress for about 20 minutes and after that it didn't show any progress. It was not taking any CPU cycles and It was not writing to the log file either. Basically we were never able to cleanly uninstall 9i. We tried almost 2 to 3 times.
    6. Then we installed 9i using a new ORACLE_BASE and this time we selected "Custom Install" and we did not install RAC. This is successful
    7. Then we installed new installer (2.2.0.18.0 ) and we tried to install the 9i patch (9.2.0.4.0) using this new installer but it never succeeded. Then we tried to install the 9i patch (9.2.0.4.0) using the old installer version (2.2.0.11.0) and it was also successful.
    8. Then we tried to create database using DBCA and it was successful and then we dropped the database which was created using DBCA and then we created it manually through SQLPLUS and this was fine too.
So basically what we learned from this exercise is that if we are installing 9i on a machine which is part of a cluster and if we don't plan to setup RAC then we shouldn't install RAC and we should do a custom install. I wish there was a option in create database stmt to tell Oracle that though we are creating database on a machine which is part of a cluster environment but we don't intend to setup RAC.
And other thing which is still a mystery is that why does the uninstall never completes successfully. One question on this : We were using the installer version 2.2.0.18.0 to uninstall the 9i software. Do we need to use the older version (2.2.0.11.0) of the OUI?

  • How do i know if my query using  SORT_AREA_SIZE   or temporary tablespace ?

    Good Morning  Everyone !
    My DB version is 10.2.0.1
I have large table  exactly 3 million records.
    SQL> select count(*) from tab1;
    COUNT(*)
       300000
    SQL> select * from tab1 order by no DESC;
    sorting  ... in process
    300000 rows selected.
    in Terminal 2 : I tried to find  sorting details -   ( No rows  selected - why ? )
    SQL> select USERNAME , USER , TABLESPACE , SQL_ID from v$tempseg_usage  ;
    no rows selected
    SQL> /
    no rows selected
    When i google i have seen this ;
If  Oracle cannot do the sort in memory  (SORT_AREA_SIZE initialisation parameter), space will be allocated in a temporary tablespace for doing the sort operation.
REF_LINK : TEMPORARY Tablespaces and TEMPFILES | Oracle FAQ
MY DOUBT QUESTION :   How do i know if my query using  SORT_AREA_SIZE   or temporary tablespace ?
    Thanks in advance.

    @ JohnWatson
I have seen some articles from ORA - FAQ. Good.
    SQL> select USERNAME , USER , TABLESPACE , SQL_ID from v$tempseg_usage;
    USERNAME                       USER   TABLESPACE                      SQL_ID
       SCOTT                               SYS          TEMP                            fh9vqgyd6m0d1
PGA management means that sorting only 300000 rows  may well occur in memory
Is this (3 million rows) -  standard  value for 10g version ?
    Thanks JohnWatson
