ORA_OLB and ORA_UTIL logicals on VMS

As part of a conversion from an Ingress database to Oracle and the C code that
supports it, my developers asked me the following:
What VMS command procedure (.COM file) defines the logicals ORA_OLB and ORA_UTIL- both used in the
LNOCIC.COM procedure used to link OCI programs ?
Appreciate all help.
I have also posted this on the OCI forum, but I think it's more of a OS level type
question.

Funny thing: this happens in SQL Developer, but runs fine in Toad (only problem with Toad: there's no OWA Pane to see the output).Try
SQL>  declare
nm owa.vc_arr;
begin
nm (1) := 1;
owa.init_cgi_env (nm);
htp.adddefaulthtmlhdr (false);
owa_util.mime_header ('application/xml', false);
owa_util.http_header_close;
-- Output the clob to the HTTP flux
htp.p ('<?xml version="1.0" encoding="Windows-1252" ?>');
htp.showpage ();
end;
Content-type: application/xml
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="Windows-1252" ?>
PL/SQL procedure successfully completed.

    Hi John,
Maybe it's a complete nonsense but even if has no sense proceeding that way solved the issue here.
I have a query that suddenly failed to execute with the error described, version 10.2.0.3 but it does not happens in 10.2.0.4. As a workaround we did it using subselects and joining as described in the post and the query worked again.
So ORA-01445 is triggered even if it's not the cause of the error. You have there a circumstance where it fits...
So, it is clearly a bug introduced (possibly in 10.2.0.3), and fixed in 10.2.0.4.
I cannot post the query because license restrictions but believe it or not this happens with Oracle. It's great to know that the number fields of the tables does not matter. I was suprised to hear it. But your clarification was good. :D Tnx.
It seems that our DBA found that this behaviour can be corrected with an official patch.
Which clearly indicates a bug, just be sure that the patch is truly the right one.
Thank you again for your response. There are a number of bugs in MOS around ansi joins getting this error, bug
4369235.8 ORA-1445 can occur for ANSI join queries with large views/subqueries
seems possiblefor your case. However the workaround for that was to not use ansi style joins, so again, the number of columns is not directly the cause of the error.

  • Defining logicals on VMS

Actually we put a mechanism in just to do this very thing. On unix when
you set an env variable it is only seen by the children and we wanted to
get this exact behavior on vms. So we created a new logical name table
Forte_prctable. This is a process level logical name table but when we
issue the run command we create a com file that contains a define statement
for every logical in this table. Then when the sub/detached process executes
it first runs the command file defining local logicals as inherited by the
parent. Note that asyncronous commands actually run a detached process and so
the job table will not work for these.

    Hi Ella,
According to your description, you want to define security on a dimension, so that different users can see different dimension attributes or hierarchies, right?
As you said, there is no "read" and 'read/write" option on the dimension tab, we cannot set "deny" option for the dimension when creating a role. Based on my research, it seems that there is no a directly way to achieve this requirement. What we can do is
that "Deselect all members" for each attribute of the dimension in Dimension Data tab, which will hide all members of the dimension for the role. Even the dimension metadata is visible in the cube in clients, its members can't be seen. Here are some useful
    links for your reference.

    Hi,
What update rollup are you running on the DPM 2012 R2 server ?  DPM 2012 R2 UR5 introduced a new refresh feature that will re-enumerate data sources on an individual protected server.
Check for VSS errors inside the guests that are having problems being backed up.

  • Cluster node reboot and Quick Migration of VMs instead of Live Migration...

    Hi to all,
how can one configure a Windows Server 2012 multi-node failover cluster, that vms are migrated per Live Migration and NOT per Quick Migration, if one node of the failover cluster will be rebooted.
    Thanks in advance
    Joerg

    Hi Aidan,
    only for the record:
We get the requested functionality - Live migrate all VMs on reboot without first pausing the cluster- when we do the following:
    Change the value of HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\PreshutdownOrder
    from the default
    vmms
    wuauserv
    gpsvc
    trustedinstall
    to
    clussvc
    vmms
    wuauserv
    gpsvc
    trustedinstall
Now the cluster service stops at first, if we Trigger a reboot and all VMs migrate as configured per MoveTypeThreshold cluster setting.
    Greetings

  • Cluster utilization and self-provisioning

I am moving to a cloud infrastructure with VCAC for self-provisioning. How does this impact my target utilization for my HA cluster?  Previously I was targeting running each cluster at 80% utilization of RAM and CPU on each host for average peak utilization.  now I am going to allow vms to be self-provisioned.  I won't control the provisioning process anymore but various clients and tenants can provision VMs at will without my notice.  As a result, I have to be able to have capacity available more quickly to add VMs, and not suddenly run out of cluster capacity.  I want to minimize waste by running my clusters to capacity, but I also need to maximize elasticity.  What are some guidelines on how to do this?  Anyone have experiences to share -
    1. what did you pick as a target utilization figure and why ?
    2. how did you capacity plan / forecast for cluster capacity?
    3. did you use admission control?

Sounds like a cool project. Keep in mind that from an infrastructure standpoint HA and admission control are still trying to solve the same problem, recover VMs from a host or OS failure as quickly as possible.
As an example, if your new cluster has 20 hosts and you want to be able to have a host in maintenance mode and still suffer a host failure and you've decided to use % based admission control policy (this is the default recommendation, I would recommend you evaluate your environment and determine if it is the right option for you), you'll want to set the % at 10%. This will ensure that your cluster has sufficient resources to restart all running VMs. Keep in mind that unless VMs have reservations, HA just reserves capacity to start the VM, there is no guarantee of performance.
As far as your target utilization, that depends on the SLAs you are providing and your tolerance for risk.
At the last customer I worked for the answers were:
    1. We reserved capacity in a cluster such that we could have a host in maintenance mode and still lose a host and have no VMs experience performance degradation
    2. vCOps
    3. Yes

  • Deleted failed DC from the domain (Server 2012 R2) - Now after doing metadata and DNS cleanup, I can no longer promote a new DC to the domain

I work for a university and teach IT courses to undergrad and graduate students. The details below are pertaining an isolated lab environment
I had a storage failure in my lab and the DCs became corrupt. This is a university lab environment so there isn't anything crucial on here. I just would rather avoid rebuilding the domain/forest and would rather use this as a learning experience with my
    students...
So after the storage failed and was restored, the VMs hosted became corrupt. I did a NTDSUTIL to basically repair the NDTS.dit file but one of my DCs reverted to a state before DC promotion. Naturally, the domain still had this object in AD. After numerous
failed attempts at trying to reinstall the DC on the server through the server manager wizard in 2012 R2, I decided that a metadata cleanup of the old failed object was necessary.
Utilizing this article, I removed all references of the failed DC from both AD and DNS (http://www.petri.com/delete_failed_dcs_from_ad.htm)
So now that the failed object is removed completely from the domain and the metadata cleanup was successful, I then proceeded to re-install the necessary AD DS role on the server and re-promote to the existing domain. Pre-Requisites pass but generate some
warning around DNS Delgation, and Dynamic Updates (delegation is ignored because the lab is isolated from external comms, and dynamic updates are in fact enabled on both my _msdcs and root domain zones).
Upon the promotion process, I get the following error message (also worth mentioning - the account performing these operations is a member of DA, EA, and Schema Admins)
    The operation failed because:
Active Directory Domain Services could not create the NTDS Settings object for this Active Directory Domain Controller CN=NTDS Settings,CN=domainVMDC1,CN=Servers,CN=Default-
First-Site-Name,CN=Sites,CN=Configuration,DC=domain,DC=school,DC=edu on the remote AD DC domainVMDC2. Ensure the provided network credentials have sufficient permissions.
"While processing a change to the DNS Host Name for an object, the Service Principal Name values could not be kept in sync."
As you can see, this error seems odd considering. Now that I'm down to a single DC and DNS server, the sync should be corrected. I've run a repadmin /syncall and it completed successfully. Since then, I've run dcdiags and dumped those to a text as well and
    here are my results...

From what I can gather, there is a definite DNS issue but I don't have any stale records to the old DC stored anywhere. I've tried this with a new server as well and get similar errors...
At this rate I'm ready to rebuild the entire forest over again. I'm just reluctant to do so as I want to make this a learning experience for the students.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

As you can see, there seems to be some errors. The one that I did correct was the one around the _msdcs NS record being unable to resolve. For whatever, reason the name wasn't resolving the IP but all other NS tabs and records were. Just that one _msdcs
sub-zone. Furthermore, the mentioning of any connections to root hint servers can be viewed as false positives. There is no external comms to this lab so no communication with outside IPs can be expected. Lastly, they mentioned a connectivity issue yet mention
that I should check the firewall settings. All three profiles are disabled in Windows Firewall (as they have been the entire time). Thank you in advance for your help!

  • Moving VMs From One Hyper-v 2012 R2 to Another Hyper-v 2012 R2

Hi everyone, was hoping for some help in something I am confused about
    Currently I have SERVER1 running hyper-v 2012 R2
I want to move all my VMs (around 20)  to SERVER2 also running Hyper-v 2012 R2
But I am confused on the best way to do this
    1) should I just click on "MOVE" on SERVER1 to move to SERVER2?
    2) Should I do an export and then import
    3) should I setup replication from Server1 to Server2 and then do a failover?
    4) or should I shut the VM down, copy the VHDX file and then create a new VM and use that VHDX
I just want to be cautious and use the best method to ensure it goes smooth and not worry about any corruption. Can anyone offer some advice?
    thanks

It all depends on your environment and your current Hyper-V configuration.
I asume both servers are domain-member of the same domain and don't use SCVMM. If so, then make sure you do the following:
First enable the "Live Migration" feature in the Hyper-V settings on both Hyper-V Servers.
Make sure both Hyper-V Servers have a vSwitch configured with the same display name and connectivity. They must be somewhat identical, but not everything. As long as the connectivity is the same.
Make sure you have a location to store the VM files on SERVER2.
Then do a Live Migration from SERVER1 to SERVER2, follow the wizard. By using the Hyper-V Manager console on SERVER1.
NOTE1: Without computer certificates and Kerberos configuration on your Live Migration settings you cannot initiate a Live Migration from the Hyper-V Manager cconsole on SERVER2. With the default configuration, you have to login on (or connect
to) SERVER1 en then initiate the Live Migration.
NOTE2: If you can't configure the vSwitches the same. Then you have to shut down the VMs and do a Quick Migration. Then re-configure the VM network properties and power on the VMs.
I hope this information will help you goin on. If you need more detailed information use the following link:

  • Hyper-V 2012 R2 - Fixed Size VHDX Have VMs Paused Due to Disk Space Shortage

I am running Hyper-V Server 2012 R2 (Server Core).  I have an SSD boot drive and a 10 Tb Storage Space HDD (Double Pairty - RAID6) where all VMs are stored.
I have one VM setup with an expanding VHDX file.  It is setup with thin provisioning for 2 Tb and about 1.5 Tb is currently used.  The VM paused due to physical disk space (SS drive) being low.  I turned off this VM and tried to start a different
VM that has two fixed size VHDX files (also on the SS drive).  This second VM would not start either.  I got the same error message, as occurred on the first VM, about the physical disk space being low.  There was about 10-20 Mb of physical
space left of my SS HDD when these errors occurred.
Given the first VM is setup with an expanding VHDX that makes sense to me that at some point there may not be enough physical disk space for the VM to expand and continue to run.
But given my second VM is using a fixed VHDX it doesn't make sense to me that I cannot get this VM to start.  Even if the Storage Space disk were completely full I would expect this VM to be able to start?
Thanks for any assistance you can provide.
    Theokrat

    Hi Theokrat,
"The HDD was setup with approximately 5 Tb storage pool as double parity."
"My first VM has a 4 Tb fixed VHDX. Thus there was only about
1 Tb free space left for the second VM."
"And for the VMs I'm asking about I set up those options to point to my HDD which is the D drive."
So, there are two VMs (the first VM has 4TB disk , the
second VM has 1TB disk )and all of the VMs'  files
are stored on the 5TB HDD (the 1TB VHDx is dynamical) .
You turned off the second VM when it was paused due to lacking of disk space (before this the first VM is off ).
When you start the first VM , it still can not start and the error arose again ,right ?
If there is no any other factor led to disk usage increasing , I think the issue might be the startup memory of first VM is larger than or equal to the second VM's .
Please try to check that , if it is true , you can try to set lower memory for the first VM then start it again .
    Best Regards

  • Do the "Pre-built Developer VMs" work on Windows 7 Home 64-bit OS

    Hello,
Do the "Pre-built Developer VMs" work on the laptops with Windows 7 Home premium 64-bit Operating System?
    Thanks
    Mohanraj

Yes, Aman you are right. As I guessed it worked. I was not sure that the Oracle Virtual Box will work on Home Premium 64-Bit because the download page did not say anything about which flavor of 64-Bit OS is supported. However, I downloaded and installed ("Oracle Virtual Box and Pre-built Developer VMs"). Afterwards, I tested a few items, so far looks good.
    Thanks for your response.

  • Lun Size best practice for UC apps and VMWare?

    Hi,
We have UCS manager v2.1 with FI 6248 direct FC attached to NetApp with plenty of storage.
Per following doc, Lun size for UC apps should be 500GB - 1.5TB and 4 to 8 VMs per Lun.
    http://docwiki.cisco.com/wiki/UC_Virtualization_Storage_System_Design_Requirements#Best_Practices_for_Storage_Array_LUNs_for_Unified_Communications_Applications
We have four B200M3 blades and 3 to 4 UC apps (CUCM, Unity, UCCX) will be hosted on each blade. May add more VM the blades in the future.
I am thinking four 1 TB Luns and one for each blades. (actually 8 Luns in toal, 4 boot luns for ESXi and 4 for UC apps).
What is the best practice (or common deployment) to create Lun size and design?
    Thanks,
    Harry

UC apps need low IO,nothing special,Reference vmware LUN design is ok.

  • Slow transfer speed between existing servers and new servers

I have an issue with copying files to a new HP physical server with Esxi 5.5 host and Windows 2012 Server from anywhere in our current network.
We have an older HP server with Esxi 3 and multiple Windows 2003 vms, including a domain controller, file server and sql server (our current environment).   I installed a new HP DL380 Gen 8 server and installed Esxi 5 and two Windows 2012 servers,
one is a DC and one is a file server (our future environment).
Currently the new 2012 DC a second domain controller; have not made it the first domain controller yet.   The 2012 file server is a member server.  Same network IP range, static, same subnet, same gw.
When I try to copy files from our current environment – to either of the Windows 2012 servers it crawls, like 100kb/sec or less.   It is slow between 2003 and 2012 servers, either direction, and between my Windows 7 and the 2012 server.  Does
not matter if I use windows to copy or robocopy.  It is very fast between the 2003 servers in the current environment and between my windows 7 and the current servers.  Downloads from the Internet do not seem slow.  I have done the following
to try to resolve with no success:
Some forums have suggested disabling Large Send offload on the nic card – usually Broadcom cards, ours are intel, but      I tried it anyway with no success.
Some forums suggested turning off digital signing in group policy, no success.
Some forums suggest SMB2 can be a culprit, I disabled it on the 2012 server with no change in speed.
I made sure all the updates are complete on the new 2012 file server.
Turned the server firewall off to be sure it wasn’t blocking something; no antivirus installed yet.
I contacted Vmware to make sure the virtual switch and nics were set up correctly on Esxi 5, they said they are.
I checked the physical Cisco switch settings to make sure it looked fine.   The current and future physical servers were      all connected to the same physical switch.
I switched out the network cable
I moved the network cable to a different switch.
I checked to be sure DNS was set up correctly.
I checked firewall settings on the Esxi 5.5.
Current HP Service pack is installed on the Gen 8 Server.
I am running out ideas.   Any suggestions?

    Hi,
Would you like to adjust to RSS, NetDMA and TCP Offload?

  • Re: Crystal Reports 5.0 (32-Bit) and Forte 2.0H16 on NT3.51

    Dear Silke,
Crystal's default for identifying a table in the report design is
<schema>.<table>. You can change that by going to the Database Location menu
item and cutting the schema prefix off. You should do that for every table in
the report. The PESetNthTableLogOnInfo function will, I believe, not change
the schema prefix of a table, since it assumes you really want that schema,
i.e., as an override. Also, if you are using the propagateAcrossAllTables
feature of the function make sure that every table has the schema prefix cut
off, otherwise those tables will be skipped, since the propagate feature applies
to all other similar tables only. For example, some of the tables could be
    Sybase, etc.
I believe you can change the default behaviour of the CR Report Designer in the
File->Preferences menu, so that when reports are designed the schema prefix is
    not automatically attached.
I have compiled some guidelines on designing reports to make them work properly
with Forte. I will try to send them to you next week. Crystal Reports and its
C API are a good product, and you will get good performance once the report
    design is set up properly.
    Yours very sincerely, John Hodgson.
    Schulte, Silke (DVD) wrote:
The problem seems to be, that Crystal stores the database name in the
report. If you want to change the database you have to develop your
report new, although you give the connection-information via the API.
The hotline from Crystal told us, when using subreports you have to use
the PESetNthTableLogOnInfo and to go through all the subreports and
    change the connect-string.
Our experience is, you have to do both: change the report and call the
    other function for the subreports.
Thank you very much for all the tips.

    Hi There,
Crystal reports stores Database name as a hard-coded
    value in the
report template. So if you have to use an other
    database, you will
have to open the report template and modify the
    database name. I
think this is why you are getting Crystal API error.
    Hope this helps!

    Hello,
I wonder if we have a similar problem.
We are using Crystal Reports 5 and Forte 3.0.F.2. For
    the interface
between Forte and Crystal we have in Forte a Lib using
    C-wrappering to
    the C-API of Crystal.
We have developed a report on a database in our
development-environment. This report comes up with data
    and works
correct. It's no different if we have saved the report
    in Crystal with
    data or without.
If we want to use the same report on another database
    in our
test-environment the window from crystal reports comes
    up and when
starting there is an error from the Crystal API
    function.
Both environments use the same version of an Oracle
    Database and are on
Open VMS. The client for the test is in this case
    always the same.
From the C-API we use the method PEStartPrintJob after
    we have specified
    the rest for the report.
Is there a possibility that this is the same error you
    mentioned? Or do
    you have any other ideas?
    Any help is appreciated.

    Tim,
You need to upgrade to CrystalReports 6.0. There isa bug in the
interaction between Forte and CrystalReports 5.0 (Idon't know on
which side the bug resides, but I think that it is onthe Crystal end,
since the problem occurs both through C-wrapperingand OLE
interaction), which does not allow you to invoke thePrintReport
method unless you have saved data with the report.
As far as I know, there is no workaround, and theonly solution is to
    upgrade to CrystalReports 6.0.
FYI, there is no ActiveX control supplied withCrystalReports 5.0 -
you are actually using standard OLE integration.
    Hope this helps...
    Regards,
    -Katie

    Hi Forte-User !
We got a big problem here using the crystal active-xcontrol. On my
    windows-nt 4.0 machine (with
crystal reports installed completely) all works well.On our test
machine (with only the crystal ActiveX
installed), the Forte runtime shuts down afterinvoking a special
    method of the ocx (PrintReport).
The cause for shutting down (no stacktrace orsomething like that) is
    a generated c++ exception in crystal -
but we don't know the cause of this exception.
Has anyone made the control work under nt 3.51 ? Doesanybody know
    (exactly) what dll's we'll have
    to use ?
    TIA,

    Dear Silke,
Crystal's default for identifying a table in the report design is
<schema>.<table>.

  • Restriction on running Apex on Open VMS?

    Hi,
I have a client that is looking at Apex but is unsure if it is available and supported under Open VMS. They are running 10g Rel. 1.
The confusion comes from a text on the download page of Apex that says :
Note: Oracle Application Express 3.0 is supported on all Standard and Enterprise Edition versions of the Oracle database, 9.2.0.3 and higher. We specifically support the following platforms:
    Linux x86
    Microsoft Windows (32-bit)
    Mac OS X Server
    Linux on Power
    Linux x86-64
    z/Linux
    Linux Itanium
    Solaris x86
    Microsoft Windows (64-bit Itanium)
    Microsoft Windows (x64)
Solaris Operating System (SPARC) (64 bit)
    AIX5L
    HP-UX PA-RISC
    HP Tru64 UNIX
    HP-UX Itanium
It does mention that Apex is supported on ALL versions of the database but OpenVMS is not listed.
    thanks

    Hi Yvan,
APEX runs inside the database, so assuming you have a DB that meets the minimum version requirements you should be fine.
Regarding the OHS/HTTP server, you do not have to install it on the same machine, in other words you could easily install a Windows or Linux version of the OHS/HTTP Server on another machine and point it at your APEX installation in the DB.
One other think, as far as I'm aware there aren't that many other VMS users using APEX, so asking for clarification that it works might mean you have to wait a long time for someone to answer. So I'd suggest....can you not just try it yourself? (I'm pretty sure it should be fine given then previous requirements constraints).
    John.
