Oracle 10g EE - Spatial Index, C Interfacing & Custom C Functions

Hi everyone,
I'm doing a research project concerning indexing and I'd like to do some testing using Oracle DB.
My questions are:
1) I've noticed here (http://www.oracle.com/database/product_editions.html) that Spatial is not included in EE, is this just the complex spatial functions? Is the R-tree (or some other spatial index) still available for simple queries?
2) I've read that Pro*C is the simplest way to use Oracle from C, however Pro*C does not exist in 10g, only OCI. Is there a simpler way to use Oracle from C other than OCI?
3) How do I go about creating custom functions which are written in C (for speed reasons)?
If not all of these are possible in EE, which version of Oracle would I need?
Thanks heaps,
Martin.

From the binaries point of view Spatial is included in the Enterprise Edition, the fact that it says it is an option means you have to buy a license additional from the enterprise Edition license to be able to use it.
You can find several demos based on MapViewer which are written in java, so IMO Pro*C is not the best suitable way to start working with Spatial Data, I suggest you to consider Java instead.

  • Oracle 10g and Spatial Components

    I'm a student exploring the use of oracle 10g in building spatial business intelligence systems since I have to develop such as part of my project. Oracle 9i is somewhat familiar to me. I downloaded and installed oracle 10g enterprise database from oracle's website. Can anyone assist me with the following?
    ---The OEM is not in my Oracle Home Folder, and I have to connect to the internet to get access to my database, is there any possibility for me not going online to have access to my database and where is the OEM (fully web-enabled)?
    ---Does Oracle database client come packaged with Oracle Spatial and Locator?
    ---Will Oracle provide a good option to develop a prototype of a Spatial BI tool for ascertaining how consumer services can be improved and so enable better decision making?
    ---Is Oracle 10 enterprise database and application server, the two main components to install to develop a system for spatial data.

    In my opinion, there are more misunderstandings in Oracle Spatial than in any other Oracle technology. This is largely because Oracle Spatial is both a GIS-neutral storage mechanism, as well as a powerful standalone extension to SQL for handling spatial-related BI.
    The APress 'Pro Oracle Spatial' is mandatory reading. It actually leads you through the install, dataset loading, tuning, and sample spatial data query and management. http://apress.com/book/bookDisplay.html?bID=315
    There is also a Spatial forum in the Database category.

  • Oracle 10g R2 Enterprise Manager Web Interface doesn't see the database

    Been at this a few days now... so I hope you can help.
    Windows XP (sp2 slipstreamed)
    Logged in as "Administrator" to the local machine (not the domain)
    I have downloaded Oracle 10g for Windows and have installed it using the Universal installer. The only parameter I changed was the default name of the database from orcl to ORAC (and given the problem I have had with the manager, that's turned out to be an appropriate name!). I set the passwords to be all the same and then let it run.
    Before installation I logged in as "Administrator" and configured the environmental variables - oracle_home, oracle_sid, sid etc.
    It installs, sqlplus client and isqlplus (the web version) both connect fine and so does the windows administrator snapin.
    The only thing that refuses point blank to see the database is the Enterprise Manager.
    The Enterprise Manager takes the SYS logon (as sysdba) quite happily and then it states:
    Error
    java.lang.Exception: Exception in sending Request :: null
    Status Status Pending
    Status Pending Since Unavailable
    Last Known State
    Nice friendly error message there Oracle... thanks
    So more digging
    emctl status dbconsole produces
    EM Daemon is not running.
    which seems to go with
    Clicking Startup/Shutdown gets me
    Couldnot contact the agent. Verify that the url for the agent is null
    Trying the preferences in the EM webpage
    gets me "Io exception: Unknown host specified"
    As near as I can figure, the "agent" is missing - but according to the documentation I have read dbconsole is all that is needed (I not running the grid computing bit).
    Ideas?

    Hmmm no way to attach the error... but it a big error... this is what happened when I did the operations described this morning in the emoms.log
    The same errors show on previous times I have tried to start EM

  • Oracle materialized view + spatial index

    Hello,
    i faced with problem when i create spatial index on materialized view.
    I create materialized view on 2 table which contains spatial geometrys.
    create materialized view mv_geom as
    select g.nid, g.geometry
    from geom1
    union all
    select select g.nid, g.geometry
    from geom2
    i created spatial index - all works fine, but when i try to drop table, i get exception "ORA-04020"...
    Materialized view become invalid but don't drop from database.
    SQL> drop materialized view mv_geom;
    Materialized view dropped
    But object does not drop
    select * from all_objects z where z.OBJECT_NAME = 'geom1'
    and z.OBJECT_TYPE ='MATERIALIZED VIEW'
    Any ideas?
    Thank's for help!

    I don't quite follow you. Do you mean that after you dropped mv "mv_geom".
    you expect that the base table "geom1" should be dropped?

    I created a trigger below, it compiled successfully, but when I tried to insert a xml document into oracle 10g db, I got error message says:
    550- Error Response
    ORA-00604: error occurred at recursive SQL level 1
    ORA-30625: method dispatch on NULL SELF argument is disallowed
    ORA-06512: at "CONTENTDB.VALIDATE_LINK", line 11
    ORA-04088: error during execution of trigger 'CONTENTDB.VALIDATE_LINK'
    550 End Error Response
    My trigger is:
    CREATE OR REPLACE TRIGGER VALIDATE_LINK
    BEFORE insert on TABLE_LINK
    FOR each row
    DECLARE
    v_key VARCHAR2(1000);
    v_count NUMBER(5);
    xmldata XMLType;
    begin
    xmldata := :new.sys_nc_rowinfo$;
    IF xmldata.existsnode('/link/key') = 1 THEN
    v_key := xmldata.extract('/link/@key').getStringVal();
    select count(*) into v_count from table_link WHERE (existsNode(object_value,'/link[key=v_key]') = 1 )
    and (existsNode(object_value,'/link/publishingElements[TestingFlag="true"]') = 1);
    if (v_count >= 1) then
    raise_application_error (-20001, 'TestingFlag can only have one true value.');
    end if;
    end if;
    end;
    I have questions regarding above trigger:
    1) it seems extract() doesn't work in statement below: v_key := xmldata.extract('/link/@key').getStringVal();
    2) can I pass a variable v_key into xmltype.existsnode() function? if yes, what is the right format to do so?
    Thanks a lot.
    Honson

    Hi Mark,
    Thanks for your comments, I have added checking for xmltype object is not null logic. and my initial problem was fixed, the only last problem I am having now is xmltype.extract().
    CREATE OR REPLACE TRIGGER VALIDATE_LINK
    BEFORE insert on table_LINK
    FOR each row
    DECLARE
    v_key VARCHAR2(4000);
    v_count NUMBER(5);
    xmldata XMLType;
    v_tmp VARCHAR2(4000);
    begin
    xmldata := :new.sys_nc_rowinfo$;
    if (xmldata is not null) then
    IF xmldata.existsnode('/link/key') = 1 THEN
    v_key := xmldata.extract('/link/key').getStringVal();
    v_tmp := '/link[key=' || v_key || ']';
    select count(*) into v_count from cibc_link WHERE (existsNode(object_value,v_tmp) = 1 )
    and (existsNode(object_value,'/link/publishingElements[TestingFlag="true"]') = 1);
    if (v_count >= 1) then
    raise_application_error (-20001, 'TestingFlag can only have one true value.');
    end if;
    end if;
    end if;
    end;
    I am expecting this statement:
    v_key := xmldata.extract('/link/key').getStringVal();
    return v_key := content.link.viewPrintableVISACreditCard
    but now it always returns like this:
    v_key := <key>content.link.viewPrintableVISACreditCard</key>
    I don't want the xml tag <key></key> returned by extract().getStringVal() function.
    Could you or anyone please help?
    Thanks.

  • Oracle 10g Pivot query

    Hi,
    I want to create a view. Sales amounts, countries and products will be showed in this view.
    Report result will be like below:
    Products
    Countries Sales_Amount
    TV Ipad Iphone Netbook Notebook EbookReader
    England 1000 1200 1400 3000 5000 200
    Germany 800 1000 1300 2800 6000 400
    France 1100 1100 1500 2400 3000 500
    Number of products are not limited. New prodcuts can be added by the time.
    Customer is using Oracle 10g. So I can not use pivot function which cames with Oracle 11g.
    If the number of products is limited, I can write sql by decode operators.
    But I can not find how to implement pivot function in Oracle 10g with unlimited column values.
    Do you have any comment?
    Thanks,Regards

    From the SQL and PL/SQL FAQ:
    "This is not easily possible as the number of columns returned by an SQL must be known before any data is fetched, it would have to be done dynamically.

    Hello.
    Can anyone let me know is their any privilege in Oracle 10g that we Incorporate the Rich Text Editor functionality. Currently we are working on Laboratory / Radiology Template based Reports in which they are requesting their should be option through which we can simply Cut and Paste our organized TEXT(REPORT) which are formatted in MS WORD with Bold,Underline and in Bullets format, it should simply paste in Editor and we can view a Template based report with formatted REPORT.
    We are using Oracle 10G and it's Applet based Application. Any clue how can we Accomplish this? Any Suitable Suggestion?
    Thanks

    Sorry, I referred this already.. This also returns the HTML text. But i don't want the HTML text. I want Normal Text what i enter in the Editor. But as of now all the editors are returning HTML text. So in the front end also it is showing HTML text only.
    I entered the text in Editor as

  • Oracle 10g Release 2 Spatial

    Hi,
    I couldn't move these questions from another post, so I deleted them and put them here:

    Hi, is there somewhere a roadmap (with dates) or/and a list of new spatial features in future releases of the oracle database

    I agree, a roadmap with attached release dates and
    feature listings would be an excellent resource.
    Ronan

    Oracle isn't allowed to provide futures information in advance of product announcements, except under non-disclosure agreements.
    Oracle 10g Release 2 has been announced, so here is some high-level information about Spatial Features included in it:
    EPSG Coordinate System Support
    New parameters to sdo_filter, sdo_relate, and sdo_within_distance to only return data above or below a certain size with respect to the screen size(to prevent a large amount of data from rendering on a single pixel on the display, for instance)
    New indexing parameter to define how Spatial/Locator internally batches index updates at commit time to allow faster index processing during inserts, updates, and deletes.
    New utility function to automatically try to fix invalid geometries
    First shipping release of the spatial routing engine
    In GeoRaster:
    Compression (JPEG and DEFLATE)
    Cross-schema usage
    Requirements for raster data table uniqueness, and procedures to help maintain uniqueness
    Enhancements to GeoRaster Viewer
    In Topology:
    Add geometry interfaces for points, lines, and polygons
    Create feature interface (first full release)
    Load topo map procedure
    remove obsolete nodes
    Find the features this feature is created from in a hierarchy
    Can build feature layers in a hiercharchy either from previous layer or from primitives
    Simplified export/import
    Network Data Model
    Bidirected links
    cost columns based on function (dynamic costing)
    Also, numerous bug fixes across the board, and some other minor changes/additions

  • Oracle 9i 10g slow spatial query

    I have been using the following spatial query in oracle 9i to assign jurisdictions to spatial points.
    SELECT /*+ordered*/ L.TCH_X_COORD, L.TCH_Y_COORD, T.NAME
    FROM tis.tis_coordinates_hold_on L,
    geospatial.mdt_admin_districts T
    WHERE SDO_RELATE(T.GEOMETRY,
    MDSYS.SDO_GEOMETRY(2001,41079,MDSYS.SDO_POINT_TYPE(tch_x_coord,tch_y_coord,NULL),
    NULL,NULL),'mask=ANYINTERACT querytype=WINDOW') = 'TRUE'
    AND tch_assigned_base_rte='M00001N'
    By using the ordered hint I was able to double the retrieval rate.  My problem is this: We are now migrating to oracle 10g, and the use of the ordered returns no rows (different incorrect results). If I remove the + ordered the results are correct, but I no longer get the increased speed of retrieval. Has anyone run into this problem, and can you suggest a way that I could speed up this query. As it stands now it takes more than 1/2 sec for each record retrieved, and I have millions of records !! Thanks.

    We're using 10.2.4.0 I believe I have found the reason the queries were different. When I dropped the spatial index and re-created it, the query returned the same rows as 9i. However, I still have an issue with the speed. 10g appears to be about 1/3 as fast as 9i was. It doesn't seem to make any difference whether I put in the +ordered or not.  Our dba says just based on cpu and processing speed the server that has 10g should be significantly faster.  Any comments?  Thanks.

  • How to migrate Spatial SDE from 9.3 to 10 and Oracle 10g to 11g

    Hi,
    I would like ti post a question to ask a help.
    We have a task of migrating from Oracle 10g to 11g and at the same time from ArcGis 9.3 to version 10; SDE to SDO but no experience in this type of work.
    We are looking for any information that may help us understand what is the best strategy to complete the activity.
    Any help is very appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hello unnamed user8111502,
    In general you want to post your ArcSDE question to the ESRI forums at
    http://forums.arcgis.com/forums/32-Geodatabase-amp-ArcSDE
    But if you want some advice then I would suggest doing the Oracle upgrade first and the SDE upgrade second - for no other reason than this is what I did and had no problems.
    Upgrading Oracle from 10g to 11g is pretty straightforward, there is nothing "special" you need to do as regards your SDE middleware. Just do the 11g upgrade and then upgrade SDE to the 9.3.1 11g version (again not a big deal).
    You did not mention the storage type you are using. If you are using SDO_GEOMETRY, then one thing I did notice is the 11g upgrade process will drop and rebuild all your spatial indexes so if you have an huge amount of SDO spatial data on an underpowered machine then your upgrade person should bring a book along as it can take some time.
    Upgrading SDE from 9.3.1 to 10 is similarly pretty straightforward. ESRI has made extensive changes to their SDE schema data model but their underlying storage types and indexes and such have not changed. So there is no change to the data itself that I know of. The important thing is that all the ESRI users of your database need to upgrade to version 10 as well. Anyone still on a 9.3 client - this includes desktop users and servers (AGS, IMS) will no longer be able to use the database after the upgrade. As version 10 is backwards compatible with 9.3 it would make sense to have all your clients upgrade to 10 first (and troubleshoot any issues with this) and then do SDE last.
    Cheers and good luck,
    Paul

  • Can Oracle be forced to use the spatial index for sdo_filter in combination with an or clause? Difference between Enterprise and SE?

    We’re seeing the following issue: sql - Can Oracle be forced to use the spatial index for sdo_filter in combination with an or clause? - Stack Overflow (posted by a colleague of mine) and are curious to know if this behaviour is due to a difference between standard and enterprise, or could we doing something else wrong in our DB config.?
    We have also reproduced the issue on the following stacks:
    Oracle SE One 11.2.0.3 (with Spatial enabled)
    Redhat Linux 2.6.32-358.6.2.el6.x86_64 #1 SMP Thu May 16 20:59:36 UTC 2013 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
    11.2.0.3.0 Standard Edition and 11.2.0.4.0 Standard Edition (both with Spatial enabled)
    Microsoft Windows Server 2003R2 Standard x64 Edition
    However, the SQL works fine if we try it on Oracle 11.2.0.3.0 *Enterprise* Edition.
    Any help or advice would be much appreciated.
    Kindest Regards,
    Kevin

    In my experience sdo_filter ALWAYS uses the spatial index, so that's not the problem. Since you did not provide the explain plans, we can't say for sure but I think yhu is right: Standard Edition can't use the bitmap operations, and thus it'll take longer to combine the results of the two queries (because the optimizer will surely split this OR up in two parts, then combine them).
    BTW: when asking questions about queries here, it would be nice if you posted the queries here as well, so that we do not have to check another website in order to see what you are doing. Plus it will probably get you more answers, because not everyone can be bothered to click on that link. It would also have been nice if you had posted your own answer on the other post here as well, because my recommendation would have been to use union all - but since you already found that out for yourself my recommendation would have been a little late.

  • Error when creating spatial index in 10g

    Hello.
    I have a problen when I try to create a spatial index. The strange thing is that the same commands always works fine in some machines, but if always fails in others. I tryed in diferent versiones of Oracle, but I have the error in al of them. The versions I have tryed are:
    - 10.2.0.1
    - 10.2.0.4
    The operating systems are:
    Windows XP professional 32 bits
    Windows 2003 Server 32 bits
    These are the steps i make:
    1) Create a Table with a SDO_GEOMETRY column (GEOMETRY)
    2) Load data with SQLLDR (I hve tryed different SRID's, and all fail)
    So far everything is ok
    3) Create the INDEX
    When I execute the CREATE INDEX command CREATE INDEX MADRID_SX ON MADRID (GEOMETRY) INDEXTYPE IS MDSYS.SPATIAL_INDEX;
    I obtain the error:
    ERROR en linea 1:+
    ORA-29855: se ha producido un error en la ejecucion de la rutina+
    ODCIINDEXCREATE+
    ORA-13282: fallo al inicializar la transformacion de coordenadas+
    ORA-06512: en "MDSYS.SDO_INDEX_METHOD_10I", line 10+
    I too have noticed that if I execute the next command, I have an error:
    SELECT MDSYS.sdo_cs.transform(sdo_geometry(2001,8192,sdo_point_type(13.6,52.4,null),null,null),25830) from dual;
    ERROR en linea 1:+
    ORA-13282: fallo al inicializar la transformacion de coordenadas+
    ORA-06512: en "MDSYS.SDO_CS", linea 75+
    ORA-06512: en "MDSYS.SDO_CS", linea 112+
    ORA-06512: en "MDSYS.SDO_CS", linea 2678+
    And if I execute the next command, I too have another error:
    SELECT SDO_CS.VALIDATE_WKT(25830) FROM DUAL;
    FALSE (169)*
    Any ideas? Could it be related with something inside the machines, user privileges, etc.?
    Thanks in advance.

    I have found that the problem is to use a SRID of AUTH_NAME column in MDSYS.CS_SRS table without the value "Oracle." in it.
    If I use an Oracle’s SRID, everything works fine. If I use an EPSG’s SRID, fails.
    For example, this command uses an Oracle SRID (8192) and one from the EPSG (25830), and fails:
    SELECT MDSYS.sdo_cs.transform(sdo_geometry(2001,8192,sdo_point_type(13.6,52.4,null),null,null),25830) from dual;
    ERROR en linea 1:
    ORA-13282: fallo al inicializar la transformacion de coordenadas
    ORA-06512: en "MDSYS.SDO_CS", linea 79
    ORA-06512: en "MDSYS.SDO_CS", linea 116
    ORA-06512: en "MDSYS.SDO_CS", linea 2690
    However, if I use two Oracle SRID (8192 and 83030), it works.
    SELECT MDSYS.sdo_cs.transform(sdo_geometry(2001,8192,sdo_point_type(13.6,52.4,null),null,null),83030) from dual;
    SDO_GEOMETRY(2001, 83030, SDO_POINT_TYPE(1625183.71, 5936269.06, NULL), NULL, NULL
    Therefore, the problem seems to be to use a non Oracle SRID.

  • Looking for a Web Interface for Editing Data in an Oracle 10g Database

    Greetings all!
    My organization is implementing Oracle 10g Release 2 Enterprise version. We have an employee who will need to edit data in the database which will hold staff phone numbers, email addresses, and other contact information. This employee will never need to administer the database or develop tables, queries, etc. They will only need to add and remove rows of data and edit text values stored in a database table.
    Does Oracle 10g have a built-in, browser-based tool that can be used to edit data in a table via a friendly user interface? If no, can you please recommend an easy to use tool for editing data in an Oracle database?
    Thanks for any help you can provide!
    Rachel

    Justin,
    Thanks very much for the tip!
    Do you know if Oracle 10g has any kind of built-in tool for editing data? I have heard of "The Vault", but that appears to be a tool for administering database users, reports, etc. I am looking for some kind of tool that shows the data in a grid layout (like Microsoft Excel) and allows someone to edit and save data in that grid. A web-based tool would be best, but a desktop tool (especially if it's already part of Oracle 10g) would also be good.
    Thanks again,
    Rachel
