Oracle 10g - Varchar(2) to Date conversion

I have a single table, SOURCE_DATA,containing import data. The import data contains a date in the yyyymmddmmss(20110125032841) format and is stored
in a varchar(2) field type named EVENT_DATE_AD when it is imported. When the import is complete, the EVENT_DATE_AD must be converted to a date(including time) and used to update the EVENT_DATE date type field. The table contains hundreds of thousands of records. What is the easiest way to import this data into the table, convert the date and update the EVENT_DATE field and set the CONVERT_DATE_CD = 1. The CONVERT_DATE_CD is a flag to verify this record has been processed. Right now I convert the .csv file to .xsl and import the data in to Oracle. I'm really not too concerned about the import process. Just the conversion and update. Any suggestions are appreciated.

This works for the date but the time is not stored. When I select on the EVENT_DATE the following displays:
25-JAN-11
I changed the NLS_DATE_FORMAT = MM/DD/RRRR.
Now it displays
2/25/2011.
But, still no time. Any suggestions?A column of type DATE will ALWAYS store the time component.
However, most Oracle databases are configured to only display the date component when selecting a DATE column.
To display the time component, you MUST ensure that it will be displayed. There are 3 ways to do that
1) Configure the database to display the time component for all dates;
2) Configure the SESSION to display the time component for all dates; and/or
3) Use the TO_CHAR function and add the format to that displays the time component.
Your NLS_DATE_FORMAT only is designed to show the date component. Use 'hhmiss' to add Hours, Minutes and Seconds.
And read the fine SQL Langiuage Reference manual, chapter 2, to get an idea how to use the other several dozen formatting capabilities.

  • SQL Loader Oracle 10g problem in upload date with time data -- Very urgent.

    Hi
    I am trying to upload data using SQL loader. There are three columns in the table
    defined as DATE. When I tried upload a data like this '2007-02-15 15:10:20', it is not loading time part. The date stored as 02/15/2008' only. There is not time on that. I tried with many different format nothing work. Can please help me ?
    I have also tried with to_date --> to_timestamp it did not work.
    The application is going to be in production, I cannot change DATE to TIME STAMP. This is very urgent.
    LASTWRITTEN "decode(:LASTWRITTEN,'null',Null, to_date(:LASTWRITTEN,'YYYY-MM-DD HH24:Mi:SS'))",
    CREATEDON "decode(:CREATEDON,'null',Null, to_date(:CREATEDON,'YYYY-MM-DD HH24:Mi:SS'))",
    LASTUPDATEDON(21) "decode(:LASTUPDATEDON,'null',Null, to_date(:LASTUPDATEDON(21),'DD/MM/YYYY HH24:MI:SS'))"

    Your problem is most likely in decode - the return type in your expression will be character based on first search value ('null'), so it will be implicitly converted to character and then again implicitly converted to date by loading into date column. At some of this conversions you probably are loosing your time part. You can try instead use cast:
    SQL> desc t
    Name                                      Null?    Type
    LASTWRITTEN                                        DATE
    CREATEDON                                          DATE
    LASTUPDATEDON                                      DATE
    SQL> select * from t;
    no rows selected
    SQL> !cat t.ctl
    LOAD DATA
    INFILE *
    INTO TABLE T
    TRUNCATE
    FIELDS TERMINATED BY ',' OPTIONALLY ENCLOSED BY '"' TRAILING NULLCOLS
    LASTWRITTEN
    "decode(:LASTWRITTEN,'null',cast(Null as date),
      to_date(:LASTWRITTEN,'YYYY-MM-DD HH24:MI:SS'))",

  • Oracle 10g XE and CLOB data type

    I am using Oracle 10.2.0.1.0 Express Edition and I wish to store large amounts of data in a CLOB column. I have created my table using a "standard" SQL statement similar to the following:
    CREATE TABLE LotsofData(
    id INT NOT NULL,
    data CLOB);
    The table is created successfully, so far so good.
    And I used a "standard" insert SQL statement to insert large amount of data into the before mentioned table, similar to the follwing:
    INSERT INTO LotsofData VALUES('4043', 'The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog.The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog <insert more iterations>');
    The data being inserted takes up 4043 bytes. Now when attempting, using among other programs the handy web interface, to execute the insert statement I get this error:
    Error starting at line 1 in command:
    INSERT INTO LotsofData VALUES('4043', 'The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog.The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog <insert more iterations>');
    Error at Command Line:1 Column:38
    Error report:
    SQL Error: ORA-01704: string literal too long
    Now if I reduce the size of the data to be inserted to 4000 bytes or below there is no problem. I have performed searches on google groups, google search engine, the oracle site, this forum but not found a way to solve it... I have found documentation stating that there is support for 4gb of user data, but well that doesn't really help.
    I have been on the trail of TABLESPACE and working with that, but with no luck. The data type BFILE will not work as I need to be able to change the data after it has been inserted into the table.
    Is the 4000 bytes a limitation in the Express Edition and I should just forget it, or is there a way I configure the database to accept large amounts of data. Should I be creating the table using a different SQL statement?
    kind regards
    Chris Nilsson

    Right... I found out how you can solve this, well not through the web interface... but oh well it is possible though...
    the error I was getting was: ORA-01704:     string literal too long.
    the keyword/phrase is "bind variables"... Did a little more searching and found this site:
    http://www.akadia.com/services/ora_bind_variables.html
    So basically you use bind variables to insert data which fills more than 4000 bytes...
    Since the data I will be inserting will be inserted via Java/.NET application I found the section called "Bind Variables in VB, Java and other applications" the most interesting... During my testing and I had neglected to use PreparedStatements in Java, and according to the site, using PreparedStatement provided an easier solution as the API does most of the work for you. My solution was to create a small program which read the large amounts of data from a file then feed this to a PreparedStatement, setObject or setASCIIStream/setCharacterStream, then execute it.
    Well I hope this helps other people who get the same error code.

  • Migrating MySQL5 database to Oracle 10g - table with blob data fails

    During data migration phase from MySQL5 to Oracle, noticed that the tables that have record length greater than 64K fails. It just says FINISHED for those tables without migrating any data. This is specially happening in the tables that have text and blob columns with data more than 20Meg in the blob fields.
    Is this a bug? If not is ther any configuration file to increase the record size? Does it use SQL*Loader underneath to transfer the data or some other mechanism?

    Thanks Spain, but using Offline scripts does not work for me as my record length is around 28MB and SQL*loader allows maximum record length of 20MB.
    Is there any way to dump just the blob column data out of MySQL into a separate file?

  • [ORACLE 10G] Extract Long Raw data to disc

    Hi All,
    I want to extract a column which contain long raw data (pdf file) into files on my disque, but i don't know how to do it in SQL or PL/SQL, any help ???

    Or maybe just an alter table statement will do it for you...
    SQL> create table xx (x long raw);
    Table created.
    SQL> desc xx;
    Name                                                                   Null?    Type
    X                                                                               LONG RAW
    SQL> alter table xx modify (x blob);
    Table altered.

    X                                                                               BLOB
    SQL>I've not really used LONG RAW's before but apparently (according to sources on the net) the simlple alter table statement above will do the job.

  • Oracle 10g Spatial

    Hi all,
    I wonder if you guys know how to implement Oracle 10g Spatial (geocoder, spatial data for the whole country, and possiably map viewer)? I know there are some documents out there, but none of them are about implementation. do you know any step-by-step implementation instruction available?
    Thanks a lot.
    Jinran

    1) There is a separate forum for Spatial which has some discussion on this;
    2) You could come to an Oracle University Oracle Spatial course - I always discuss these exact questions (but it takes about 1 hours to walk trough it, so I will not do that in the forum)
    3) If you want to use Spatgial, run (don;t walk) to the nearest book store and order the Apress Spatial book. http://www.apress.com/book/view/1590593839 covers what you want, and http://www.apress.com/book/view/1590598997 will covers what you want as well as the improvements to 11g.

  • Issue with Date Conversion when loading XML File into Oracle 10g Database

    Hello all,
    I have the interface shown in the screenshot below. In it, amongst other actions, I'm mapping an XML file element representing a date to an Oracle table column defined as DATE. The source and target columns are highlighted in the screenshot.
    !http://img223.imageshack.us/img223/1565/odiscr275.jpg!
    When I execute the interface, I get the following error message:
    java.lang.IllegalArgumentException at java.sql.Date.valueOf(Date.java:103)
    I'm assuming this refers to the date conversion!
    I've already tried replacing SRC_TRADES.DEAL_DATE with TO_DATE( SRC_TRADES.DEAL_DATE, 'DD/MM/YYYY' ) in the Implementation tab. This function was not recognised when I executed the interface, so it didn't work! The date value in the XML file is in DD/MM/YYYY format.
    I'm guessing that Oracle SQL Date functions don't work in the Implementation tab. Please could somebody let me know:
    1. Which Date Conversion function I could use instead?
    2. Where I can find a reference for the methods/functions I can use in the Implementation tab (if such a reference exists)?
    Cheers.
    James

    Hi.
    Try to change the execution area to staging area. After You change it, write in the mapping box just SRC_TRADERS.DEAL_DATE. When You use TO_DATE, the source field typu should be varchar2, not date (as it is in your source datastore)

  • Converting Informix data to Oracle 10g

    Hi,
    We are planning to convert data on Informix 5.x based legacy system over to Oracle 10g.
    Wondering if anyone would like to share some light on this process, experience, use of Oracle or Other tools..
    Regards,
    Subhash

    Are you looking to convert your data alone or do you wish to maintain the structure of the your legacy system? If you wish to retain the structure of your legacy system then something like like the oracle workbench may be what you are looking for. If you are just trying to convert your data from one database application to another then you just need an analyst map out your conversion needs and a good conversion programmer to convert the data.

  • Data source from Oracle 10g problem

    Dear Sir,
    We met a problem when we moved on Oracle 10g from Oracle 9i in the loading process. The scenario is that SQL Server as Data Warehouse, SSIS as ETL tool. But the length of string column as data source table in SSIS grows up 4 times when using Oracle 10g. For example, ABC table x varchar2(8) --> x varchar(32) -->x varchar(8) --> x varchar(8) {Oracle 10g        SSIS(source) }
    This doesn’t influence the loaded result (I did not find any problem until now), but that influence loading performance and we worry about potential problems.
    Do you have any idea or have you met the same problem before? Is I need setup some parameters like "code page"
    Thanks,
    Jacob

    You could try General Database Discussions the main db foum.
    What are you using to migrate your database? Why is it being mapped from varchar2(8) to varchar2(32). It sounds like someone/something is intervening here.

  • Oracle 10g - Date format in SELECT query for CFOUTPUT

    Hello, everyone.
    The project that I am working on in the dev environment is connected to an Oracle 11g database, but the production side is Oracle 10g.
    I have a page that is erroring in production (but not development) when it gets to a date that it needs to display.
    A co-worker mentioned that, in 10g, if a date/time is being SELECTed, you have to put it in to_char(), so I did that.
    But it's still erroring, and I'm not getting an error message, so I'm assuming that I have an incorrect format for the date in the SELECT.
    What is the proper format for SELECTing a date/time when using to_char()?  Right now, I have SELECT to_char(create_date,'MM-DD-YYYY HH:MI') FROM tableA .  Is this not correct for CF to output?
    Thank you,
    ^_^

    Please see my original post ("I have a page erroring in production (but not in development) when it gets to a date that it needs to display.")  Sorry if it came across as vague.  It made sense, to me, when I typed it.  But, then, I'm usually typing fast just to get the question out there, when I'm in a hurry.
    Haven't done a CFDUMP, yet, as every time I make a change in development that needs to be tested in production, I have to notify my supervisor that there are files that need to be copied into production, which can sometimes take a while, so I try to do troubleshooting on dev side - it's a pain in the you-know-what, but that's the kind of environment I'm working in.
    As it turns out, changing the format in the SELECT to_char() did the trick.  If anyone else has this issue with Oracle 10g, I'm now using SELECT to_char(create_date,'YYYY/MM/DD HH:MI') FROM tableA, and now the CFOUTPUT is processing the whole page.  I guess the MM-DD-YYYY threw CF into a tizzy, breaking the process?
    Anyhoo, it's working, now.  Thank you, Dan and Adam, for your thoughts on this.

  • GL Data Conversion from Legacy to Oracle EBS

    Hi All,
    I am tasked with converting legacy data into GL. I have worked on other conversions like supplier, AR and AP conversions but never worked on GL conversion, so I don't know how and where to start, what are the pre-requisites for entering data into gl_interface table how to ensure that data is correct in the .csv file etc.
    Kindly request you all to guide me in right direction. Hope to hear from you all very soon!!! :)
    Regards

    Hi,
    When you talk about GL-Data it is the trial balance to be loaded from legacy to oracle applications.
    You can use Web-ADI to upload it ,the check list are
    The balance for each account comibnation in the legacy system to be mapped to GL-Oracle code combination balance
    With respect to open AR, AP Invoices if the invoices are converted using a control account for migration in GL then
    the the balance transfered from AP,AR need not be reversed in GL from the source receivables and payables.
    In case if the same account combination are for migrating the balances from AP,AR to GL ..Then the balances transferred from AP,AR should be reversed ..so that it does not affect the TB-GL-Balance
    Finally ensure that the balance for the TB-tallys with your legacy system and upload it using Web-ADI ,import and
    review and post it.
    Hope this points helps your GL-Data conversion.

    Ramaa

  • Problem in Loading Data from SQL Server 2000 to Oracle 10g

    Hi All,
    I am a university student and using ODI for my final project on real-time data warehousing. I am trying to load data from MS SQL Server 2000 into Oracle 10g target table. Everything goes fine until I execute the interface for the initial load. When I choose the CKM Oracle(Create unique index on the I$ table) km, the following step fails:
    21 - Integration - Prj_Dim_RegionInterface - Create Unique Index on flow table
    Where Prj_Dim_Region is the name of my target table in Oracle.

    I am using a surrogate key column in my target table alongwith the natural key. The natural key is populated by the primary key of my source table, but for the surrogate key, I have created a sequence in my oracle schema where the target table exists and have used the following code for mapping:
    <%=snpRef.getObjectName( "L" , "SQ_PRJ_DIM_REGION" , "D" )%>.nextval
    I have chosen to execute this code on target.
    Among my attempts to solve this problem was to set Create Index option of the CKM Oracle(Create Index for the I$ Table) to No so that it wont create any index on the flow table. I also tried to use the simple CKM Oracle km . Both solutions allowed the interface to execute successfully without any errors, but the data was not loaded into the target table.
    When I right-click on the Prj_Dim_Region data store and choose Data, it shows empty. Pressing the SQL button in this data store shows a dialog box " New Query" where I see this query:
    select * from NOVELTYFURNITUREDW.PRJ_DIM_REGION
    But when i press OK to run it, I get this error message:

    Hi Cezar,
    Can u plz help me with this scenario?
    I have one Oracle data model with 19 source tables and one SQL Server data model with 10 target tables. I have created 10 interfaces which use JournalizedDataOnly on one of the tables in the interface; e.g in interface for DimCustomer target table, I have 2 tables, namely Customer and Address, but the journalizing filter appear only on Customer table and this option is disabled for Address automatically.
    Now I want to create a package using OdiWaitForLog event detection. Is it possible to put all these 10 interfaces in just one package to populate the target tables? It works fine when I have only one interface and I use the name of one table in the interface for Table Name parameter of OdiWaitForLogData event, but when I try a comma seperated list of table names[Customer, Address] this error happens
    java.sql.SQLException: ORA-00942: table or view does not exist
    and if I use this method <%=odiRef.getObjectName("L","model_code","logical_schema","D")%>, I get this error
    "-CDC_SET_NAME=Exception getObjectName("L", "model_code", "logical_schema", "D") : SnpLSchema.getLSchemaByName : SnpLschema does not exist" "
    Please let me know how to make it work?
    Do I need to create separate data models each including only those tables which appear in their corresponding interface and package? Or do I need to create multiple packages each with only one journalized interface to populate only one target table?
    Thank you for your time in advance.

    Neel

    OK, I went ahead and upgraded to Windows 7 Professional and I STILL get the same error messages when trying to get the Oracle ODBC driver to talk to Oracle 10g. Here are some screen shots that show what happened:
    1) Select ODBC driver: http://yfrog.com/f3driverselectionp
    2) Configure driver: http://yfrog.com/ccoracleodbcfororaclep
    3) Test connection: http://yfrog.com/1goracleodbcfororacletestp
    I also get the following error when I try to run SQL*Plus from the line command, even with no parameters:
    C:\Users\Bruce>sqlplus
    SP2-1503: Unable to initialize Oracle call interface
    SP2-0152: ORACLE may not be functioning properly
    Any suggestions as to how I might to go about diagnosing (and fixing) this problem?
    Thanks,
    Bruce
