Oracle 11g database link to Oracle 8

Hi,
database-links from an Oracle 11g to an Oracle 8-Database seem to do not work:
The error in enterprise manager is: socket error (translated from german).
There are no alerts at the Oracle 11g-Database.
On the other (Oracle 8) side, the alert we have is an "internal error"
Has anybody else that experience, and maybe a solution?
Thx a lot for your help
Alex

Hi All,
Why are you hijacking someone else's thread? This just makes it harder to deal with the OP's issue, even if you think it is closely related to yours, and you haven't given any indication that it is at all related.
I have a DB link called "appdb.message.oracle.com".
In 10g "select * from table@appdb;" is working fine but in 11g not.
Why so?
I have two cars in my garage. One works. One doesn't. Why so?
Some description of "not working" would be helpful. Actual ora-nnnnn error messages even more so.
In 11g if i create DB link with the name "appdb" only then the query "select * from table@appdb;" is working fine.
Is there any update in 11g regarding this DB link names.
Plz help me out..
Help us to help you by giving us some clues. Given my comments above, preferably in your own thread.
Thanks in Advance,
Sridhar

    HI,
    While trying to create a database link to SQL server from Oracle ,using the database gateway provided with 11g, i am getting the following error while making use of it in selecting columns from tables :
    Error starting at line 1 in command:

    Error report:
    SQL Error: ORA-28513: internal error in heterogeneous remote agent
    ORA-02063: preceding line from DBLINK
    These are the steps i have followed for setting up:
    1.Ran the set up for the Database gateway.and mentioned the SQL server name and database .ALos set up a listener.
    2. Added the following in the Listener.ora of Oraclehome 11/NETWORK/ADMIN:
    LISTENER_SQL_FCD =
    (DESCRIPTION_LIST =
    (DESCRIPTION =
    (ADDRESS_LIST =
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST =localhost) (PORT = 1541)

    Is there any issue with the set or definition that I get the above error?

    What is the version of the Oracle database in which you have specified/and use the database link?
    If it is for example 10.2.0.3.0 you need to apply the mandatory patch for RDBMS bug 5965763 first before being able to use an 11g gateway. Have a look at MetaLink note 457808.1 for details about this patch.

  • ORACLE 11g + PHP5 problem: "fetch out of sequence" on remote database link

    Hi!
    I have a new server with oracle 11g (11.1.0.7) database and apache/php5 (actual build) on linux.
    connection type is dedicated.
    when doing a connection to a remote AS/400 database I always get this error:
    "Warning: oci_fetch_array() http://function.oci-fetch-array: ORA-01002: fetch out of sequence ORA-02063: preceding line from..."
    when doing the same simple "select * from database link" at my old server with oracle 9i and apache/php5 no problem occurrs.
    this happens at AS/400 database link only. normal oracle database links work fine.
    Anyone an idea how to solve this problem or where the problem is????
    further info:
    when doing " select * from [ database link ] where rownum < 11 " it works, but when doing the query with more than 10 results I get the error. Any idea?
    bye,
    Oliver

    well a fetch out of sequence usually indicates that a cursor has been closed before the process has finished fetching or some such thing.
    I'm not aware of there being a specific problem with the situation you outline, but maybe if you could provide all the connection setup and how you are trying to connect that may give a better idea.
    Also, you may be better asking on the General Database Discussions forum as this isn't really a SQL or PL/SQL problem

    Telnet is not running on the server, I tried starting it, but it failed. When trying to connecting from my local machine through telnet, it is giving the following error:*Could not open connection to the host, on port 23: Connect failed*.
    I am able to connect to the machine through SSH(putty).

  • Database link from Oracle 11g (64 bit) to MySQL over UnixODBC with dg4odbc

    Hello,
    I want to connect to a MySQL Database from Oracle over a database link, but i get always the Error Message ORA-28528: Heterogeneous Services datatype conversion error .
    In the forum or internet I can't find a solution for my problem, so I try now to post this problem.
    Here a detailed description of the problem:
    I use a Oracle 11.1.0.7.0 64bit database which is running on a redhat linux 5.3 64bit.
    I want to connect to a MySql Database 5.0, which is running on a redhat linux 5.2 32bit over unixODBC.
    The configuration from the ODBC seems to be good, because with isql on the ora server I can connect and query all data correct from the MySQL database.
    Also the tsnnames.ora and listener.ora should be configured correctly. The tnsping works also fine.
    But when i try to catch the data over SQLPlus with the database link I always get the error ORA-28528.
    If I try to select just one column it works, but the returned data are incomplete or truncated.
    the version of my libs:
    between mysql and odbc I use libmyodbc3.so version 3.51.12-2.2 (I also tried the version 5, but with them I get a segmentation fault error on isql).
    between odbc and dg4odbc I use libodbc.so version 2.2.11-7.1
    Has anybody a solution or hint for me?
    Many Thanks in advance,
    best regards from Austria

    The error message "[Microsoft][ODBC Driver Manager] Data source name not found and no default driver specified {IM002}" is self explainind - DG4ODBC is not able to find the ODBC DSN you created.
    In your gateway init file you configured the DSN: HS_FDS_CONNECT_INFO = testmysql
    And according to the Windows ODBC Admin screenshot you created a DSN called testmysql - unfortunately you created it as a USER DSN. But DG4ODBC needs a SYSTEM DSN. The reasin why it needs a system DSN is that by default the Oracle listener is running in the local system account. So when you create an ODBC USER DSN it can be access by the user who created it, but nobody else can use it - also not the local system account which is serving the Oracle listener. So you need to create a system DSN that every user on this machine can use the DSN (including the local system account) .

    Regards, Imran

    Hi,
      In the listener.ora you have -
       (program = tg4msql)
    but with 11g gateways the executable name has been changed and you should change the entry to -
       (program = dg4msql)
    then stop and start the listener.
    If you installed the gateway into an existing ORACLE_HOME then the gateway version must be the same version as the software already installed.
    For example, if the existing software was 11.2.0.4 and you  installed 11.2.0.1 gateway this will give you problems and most likely the gateway executable will be 0 (zero) in size.

    Mike

  • Oracle Discoverer 4i (portal db - oracle 8i) connectivity issue with 11g database

    Hi All
    We have oracle discoverer 4i with portal db (oracle 8i).
    We connect to the external databases using db links in the portal db and the reports will use the db link to retrieve the data from views in the external databases.
    External databases we were connecting is oracle 10g version and now we have upgraded these databases to 11g version.
    Now i have a created a new db link to this 11g database and i have created a new EUL in portal to connect to this 11g database.
    But when i try to create a report using the discoverer from this new EUL after login to the discoverer we get a "cannot connect to database" error.
    We have all the necesscary privilege to the user and the new database link works perfectly fine. (when we try to query directly using SQL plus from portal database using this db link the query works perfectly fine).
    Im not sure if this is a compatibility issue in connecting from oracle disc 4i to a 11g database.
    Can any one advise if this is the case and if there is any workaround for this?
    Regards,
    Raj

    Are you saying you are having issues with a database link between 8i and 11g (pl post exact versions to 4 digits) ? If so, it should be expected as database links between these two versions are not supported. Is there a reason you cannot upgrade the portal database to at least 10gR2 ?

  • Database link between Oracle Standard Edition and Oracle Enterprise Edition

    Hi,
    I am looking at setting up a data transfer process between an Oracle 11g Enterprise Edition database and an Oracle 11g Standard Edition database. Database links would be required each way.
    I heard once that this is not permitted as connecting Standard to Enterprise via a DB Link means that the Standard Edition database would now need an Enterprise license.
    I have searched around but can't find anything to confirm this. Am I being mislead by this information? Is it permitted to
    connect Standard to Enterprise via a DB Link?

When a db-1 has a link pointing to db-2, as far as db-2 is concerned db-1 is just another client .. no different than sqlplus. If you have an Enterprise Edition database, of course it will need to be properly licensed. But that doesn't mean all of its clients (including a SE database) have to be EE licensed.
    But even my reply is just something you read on the internet. Licensing questions can only be definitively answered by Oracle itself. Ultimately you will need to put your hands on an official Oracle document or a written statement from someone authorized to make such statements.

    changed "database link db1" to "database link db2" per comments by SB
    Edited by: enquad on Apr 12, 2013 3:00 PM
    Changed "user" to "OS user" in subject for clarity

    enquad wrote:
    Sorry gentlemen and SB, but my question is still not answered. It is a new question, which I have not found answered elsewhere.
    To summarize:
    SB97025 informs me that db1 is not a database link, but I never said that it was. It is the second database (anonymized as "db2") that is connected to through the database link "db2.mycompany.net".
    SB97025 also wonders intriguingly if my DBA and I are we really connecting to the same database when we each connect to user1 on db1. Perhaps the Oracle server and my PC have TNSNAMES.ORA files that lead us to different databases for the same TNS alias? I do not believe this is the case, because my DBA created that user1 and that database link in the db1 database specifically for the purpose of doing this test and I see that same link when I connect to user1 on db1. Unless my DBA is spoofing me by creating user1 in two different databases - only one of which contains a working dblink named db2.mycompany.net - just for the purpose of throwing me off, I would have to conclude that he and I are actually connecting to the same database.There is no reason to "believe" (or not) that "this is the case". The entire point of SB's comment on that was to get you to verify. President Reagan famously said "trust but verify". He never worked as a DBA. I say "don't trust, just verify".
    Obviously something is different. And at this point the most likely and easiest to confirm is that you and your DBA really are connecting to the same database, on the same host server, using the same link. And at this point all we really have is to trust your DBAs statement.
    >
    Ed Stevens reminds me that db1 is acting as a client to db2 and so the solutions to the ORA-12154 are the same as for any client connection as listed on his blog (which I had already read), none of which solve my problem. Rembember, the DBA can use the database link, so by whatever means the TNS lookup is happening when he uses it, the correct connection description is being found. The question is not "why does this stinkin' database link not work"? It does work for the DBA.
    Pierre wants to make sure I know that it is the Oracle server's TNSNAMES file that is the important thing, not my client's TNSNAMES file, which is true but not relevant to my problem and I was never so naive. He also says that I could try creating a database link by including the full TNS entry in the USING string, which does work as I had already mentioned in my original post.
    Amar asks if my DBA can: sqlplus username/password@db2.
    The answer is yes. The dba can use SQL*Plus to connect to db2 from the server hosting db1 and can connect to db1 from the server hosting db2. There is almost nothing my DBA cannot do.
    None of the posters addressed the key information in my post, which was the different result my DBA and I get when using the same database link in the same schema on the same database. That AND the fact that my DBA is logged on to Linux Oracle serve as user "oracle" and I am logged in to my PC. Why should it matter to a database link which computer is running SQL*Plus or who the OS user is?
    Also the GLOBAL_NAMES parameter is set to FALSE.

  • Importing a few Oracle 10g schemas into oracle 11g database

    Hi,
    I have the task to import a few schemas that are on oracle 10g database (10.2.0.4) into oracle 11gR2 database (11.2.0.2). Now I have only oracle 10g export and import utility (the 11g server is in not where I am given the import rights).
    Can I do the export of the 10g schemas using the 10g export utility and then import into 11g database using the 10g import utility? I ran a test to do that and found it works but would also like to have expert opinion on it.
    Also another question is: if the source schema is 11g - suppose- in that case can the 10g export/import utility still work? I mean export the schema from say db1 (which is 11g) using 10g export utility and import them into 11g database db2 (which is again 11g) using 10g import? I am asking because I don't have access to 11g server and trying to find what I can do with the 10g utilities.
    Thanks,

    set up a database link to the 10gR2 version database in the 11gR2 database.
    Now using the 11gR2 client impdp utility use
    impdp network_link=<link to 10gR2 database>
    Done.
    Your 'objection' you don't have access to 11gR2 doesn't count as you can install a 11gR2 client.
    Also generally speaking you should not use a lower version imp to imp to a higher version database
    Also exp and imp are deprecated in 10g and higher.

    Hi Kanchana,
    I am using Oracle 10g/Windows Server 2008. I have created a dabaselink. The link works perfectly fine. I want to copy the table (Oracle 11g) from remote server in to my database. It is ongoing process ie, it has to be scheduled and I want the updated rows to be copied in to my database on a daily basis. Please help me out.
    Eagerly awaiting for your response.

You should have started your own thread for your own issue. You say you have created a link and it works, so whatever your problem is, it is NOT even related to the question the OP raised.
    At exactly what point are you unsure about the process? Scheduling a processes? The command to use? Exactly what have you tried? What results do you have so far?.
    Please, start a new thread explaining your issue.

  • Database link from Oracle DBMS 1g to MS SQL Server

    Hi,
    I would need to know, if there is some out of the box functionality from the Oracle DBMS 11g where I can connect to MS SQL Server (2005/2008)? If there is good tutorial on how to do it, I would very much appreciate it.
    Thanks!

    Hi,
    I have created following:
    1. Oracle DBMS 11g Enterprise installe (guessing that also the ODBC drivers for Oracle should)
    2. Using MS SQL 2009 Native Client for ODBC connectivity
    3. global_names set to false by
    alter system set global_names=false;
    4. Configures Oracle Heterogeneous services in initHS_ORCL.ora under \hs\admin to
    HS_FDS_CONNECT_INFO = HS_ORCL
    HS_FDS_TRACE_LEVEL = off
    5. Modified listerner.ora to
    SID_LIST_LISTENER = (SID_LIST = (SID_DESC = (GLOBAL_DBNAME = ORCL) (ORACLE_HOME = C:\oracle\product\11.1.0\db_1) (SID_NAME = ORCL) ) )
    LISTENER = (DESCRIPTION = (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = nt-topobase)(PORT = 1521)) )
    # Connecting to MS SQL Server via ODBC
    SID_LIST_LISTENER = (SID_LIST = (SID_DESC = (SID_NAME = HS_ORCL) (ORACLE_HOME = C:\oracle\product\11.1.0\db_1) (PROGRAM = hsodbc) ) )
    6. Modified TNSnames.ora to
    ORCL = (DESCRIPTION = (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = nt-topobase.cgs-lj.si)(PORT = 1521)) (CONNECT_DATA = (SERVER = DEDICATED) (SERVICE_NAME = ORCL) ) )
    # Connecting to MS SQL Server via ODBC (added newly)
    HS_ORCL = (DESCRIPTION = (ADDRESS_LIST = (ADDRESS= (PROTOCOL = TCP) (HOST = nt-topobase) (PORT = 1521)) (CONNECT_DATA = (SID=HS_ORCL)) (HS=OK))
    7.Restarted Oracle service
    8. Created Database link for an existing user sz that is sysdba in the ORCL instance:
    create database link hs_orcl connect to sz identified by admin using 'HS_ORCL';
    Database link created.
    9. Tried logging:
