Please suggest the good book for oracle 11g performace tunning ,
which gives the complete idea of performance tunning.

Define what do you mean by "complete" . If you are willing to read just one book to read all about Performance Tuning, well guess what, there isn't any. Every book that you are going to read from a good author, like the one suggested by Martin , is going to be useful . And just so you know, 12c is the latest release.

hi all,
am using oracle 11g enterprise edition., i didn't ran any query but in ADDR report it was running some sytem based query(SYS,DBSNMP,SYSMAN etc)
but in previous 10g it was working fine.. can anyone tell me how to stop those query..
this is the query was running most frequently :
select end_time, wait_class#, (time_waited_fg)/(intsize_csec/100), (time_waited)/(intsize_csec/100), 0
from v$waitclassmetric union all
select fg.end_time, -1, fg.value, bg.value, dbtime.value

UPDATE MGMT_JOB_EXECUTION SET STEP_STATUS=:B2 WHERE STEP_ID=:B1Why are you so concerned about background queries? Do you really think these queries uses high resource and have high elapsed time then you custom queries? The god way to diagnose a performance problem is to identify most resource intensive/time consuming program/module/code rather then running after background queries. Yes sometimes background queries too run slowly in rear cases and then you need to run dbms_stats.gather_dictionary_stats or dbms_stats.gather_fixed_objects_stats (https://blogs.oracle.com/optimizer/entry/fixed_objects_statistics_and_why) -

Performance Tunning in oracle 11g
Hi everybody,
My oracle version is 11.2.0.2 and OS :RHEL 5.5;64 bit each.As far i know,in 11g most tunning issues are handled by oracle itself.But still there are many issues that a dba should consider.Recently my system begin to response slowly,and i need to investigate the reason and come up with the solution as per management instruction.But i am confuse where and how to start...??
So..my request to experience people pls give some guidance what are issues/tools i would start with??
Another think...i m using toad 9.5,32 bit.Is it possioble to get proper message for 11g incase of generating different tunning reports.
Thanks and Regards,user8983130 wrote:

Writing request XQUERY with oracle 11G
Hi,
What is exactly the best way to make an XMLTYPE object (column with type XMLType) request with Oracle 11 g ? (Oracle 11g Release 11.2.0.3.0)
In different books, we see a lot of different requests.
Simple example :
create table contact_file_tbl(filename varchar2(255), xml xmltype);
insert into contact_file_tbl (filename, xml)
values ('john_smith.xml', xmltype(bfilename('XML_DIR', 'john_smith.xml'),nls_charset_id('AL32UTF8')));
Ok for now
But impossible to make a good query :
select XMLQuery('declare namespace book="http://xmlbook.com/sample/contact.xsd"; (:
for $c in /book:contact
return $c/book:first_name' PASSING a.xml RETURNING CONTENT)
from contact_file_tbl a;
returns nothing.
why this request works ?
SELECT filename, XMLQuery('toto'
PASSING xml RETURNING CONTENT) dataResult
FROM contact_file_tbl;
Could you send me a request with this example.
Here the XML document :
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>

in both explain plan only difference is
9 BITMAP CONVERSION TO ROWIDS
8 BITMAP AND
5 BITMAP CONVERSION FROM ROWIDS
but is bitmap degrading performance lot?
or suggest me what other parameter i can see so 2nd instance gives me better performace.I see more differences.
In plan 1:
* 16 INDEX RANGE SCAN idx_bf_creation_date 76 1 (0) 00:00:01
in Plan 2:
1 INDEX FULL SCAN (MIN/MAX) INDEX REPORTSDB.idx_bf_creation_date Cost: 3 Bytes: 8 Cardinality: 1
So this is not about "bitmap" good/bad, it about the access strategy which changed due to differences in data statistics etc. To analyze more, I'd help a LOT if those plans would be formated in a good and same way, use around it to do so. -
Oracle 11G - Oracle AWR export import Query Statistics.
I have Oracle 11G, i have seen the sql statements through Historical AWR option from Top Activites in performance tab. Can i export all AWR query statistics from production machine so that i can analyze all logs after importing it.
How can i know all statistical sql ( information ) and performace of production machine ?
any help ?Hello,
have you checked the DBA_HIST* objects to see what / how was imported?
If the awr export dosn't get the contents of the rolling buffer, then you won't see any session statistics that are only there. If you want to get the contents of the rolling buffer you have to dump the contents of it with :
oradebug setmypid
oradebug dump ashdump 10
and load it into your "test" database.
But before doing this I suggest you read the related metalink documentation if any!!!

Oracle 11g Certification Query
Hi all,
I have given my Oracle 11g exams for OCP certification. Now, i need to take one of the mandatory training to fulfill the requirements for certification. I am in Kuwait and when i select the country as Kuwait, the cheapest training course is of $1230. I am an indian, so when i select the country as India on the oracle site, the price reduces down to $540 for the same course. This is for the Live Virtual Class (LVC) rates. Can i book the LVC with India as country. Do I have to be present in India for the LVC training or only taking a course is compulsion.
Kindly advice.Zuzar Sajjad Tutawala wrote:

How to connect to Oracle 11g using thin driver with service name & SID
Hi Experts,
Wish to know whether there is a common way to connect to Oracle 11g server using SID or service name.
Earlier I used jdbc:oracle:thin:@<<server>:<<port>>:<<SID>> for connecting to individual Oracle server instances.
Now I need to connect to Oracle RAC which provides service names. So I need to use jdbc:oracle:thin:@<<server>:<<port>>/<<service name>>.
This connection string is internally constructed by a program and user inputs <<server>>, <<port>> and <<SID>> or <<Service Name>>. Now this requires two different connection strings based on the input whether its SID or service name.
Is there a common connection string for these two? Based on some articles like this, I understood that we can generically use jdbc:oracle:thin:@<<server>:<<port>>/<<service>>, whether for SID and service.
When I tried this format with SID, I am getting the below error. What I tried is jdbc:oracle:thin:@myoracleserver:1521/ORCL, where ORCL is the SID
java.sql.SQLException: Listener refused the connection with the following error:
ORA-12514, TNS:listener does not currently know of service requested in connect descriptor
Request your help in solving this. What I want is a single connection string whether its SID or service. Any help is of great value.

Oracle has an entire book for JDBC: The JDBC Developer Guide.
There are chapters that provide ALL of the connection properties and the rules for creating connection urls.

How to uninstall Oracle 11g Database Options?
I've come across a problem. A company that developed an application, installed Oracle 11g EE.
I guess they would use all default options. Some of them are licensed separately, and are not used. So I need to uninstall them.
For example, I see that it is installed "Advanced Compression". I tried to uninstall it from the Universal Installer, but there isn't an option.Good news for my company.
There has never been used "Advanced Compression" and for everything else we are licensed.

Need Best way to start learning Oracle 11g DBA
Hi.This is Tejaswi.
I want to learn Oracle 11g DBA.I've downloaded all software's and Documentation for Orcl 11g R2. Now. i want to start Learning DBA. Can any one suggest me the best way to Start learning DBA?
Please suggest me the good books For Oracle Architecture and SQL.......Hello Tejaswi,
The advice you got about reading the Oracle Concepts and 2 Day DBA documentation is very good advice.
I found that knowing some SQL*Plus and SQL Developer was also very helpful as, they both provide a way to interface with the database and try the things you read about. For SQL Plus, I used the book:
Oracle SQL*Plus: The Definitive Guide, 2nd Edition
By Jonathan Gennick
Publisher : O'Reilly
ISBN : 0-596-00746-9 I openly recommend it. It is easy to read, the book is very well thought out, it covers what you really need to know (and more too). The author explains the subjects very well. I would definitely learn some SQL Plus and SQL developer before getting into the 2 Day DBA document (make those 2 days about 7 days each if not more).
To learn SQL, I "sort of" used (I say "sort of" because I only read some parts of it available online and at the local bookstore):
Oracle SQL by Example
By Alice Rischert
Publisher: Prentice Hallit probably has more SQL than you'd need as a DBA but, it is an excellent book you may want to consider.
If you are starting from scratch, as I did, you'll find that you need to learn multiple things at the same time. I believe SQL Plus is the best place to start, along with possibly the Concepts document. That will give you a base to build upon.
HTH,
John.
