Oracle 11gR2 ASM issue
Environment: HP-UX / Oracle 11gR2 RAC with ASM
We renamed our ASM disk from c5t1d3 to ora_c5t1d3 in UNIX, and now we want to remove the old name c5t1d3, before that we want to change the disk on ASM diskgroup from c5t1d3 to ora_c5t1d3.
I dropped the disk c5t1d3 and try to add the same disk with different name ora_c5t1d3, but I am not able to add, I am getting the following error
SQL> alter diskgroup asmcrsdg1 add disk '/dev/rdsk/ora_c5t1d3';
alter diskgroup asmcrsdg1 add disk '/dev/rdsk/ora_c5t1d3'
ERROR at line 1:
ORA-15032: not all alterations performed
ORA-15020: discovered duplicate ASM disk "ASMCRSDG1_0006"
But this disk is not there, when I try to drop this disk, I am getting the following error,
SQL> alter diskgroup asmcrsdg1 drop disk ASMCRSDG1_0006;
alter diskgroup asmcrsdg1 drop disk ASMCRSDG1_0006
ERROR at line 1:
ORA-15032: not all alterations performed
ORA-15054: disk "ASMCRSDG1_0006" does not exist in diskgroup "ASMCRSDG1"
I am confused, Can anyone please help me to understand what’s going on here.
Check if ASM disk is still a part of ASM disk group.
1.
Query header_status and mount_status columns in V$ASM_DISK
2.
# dd if=/dev/rdsk/c5t1d3 of=/tmp/disk.out bs=8192 count=1000
# vi /tmp/disk.out
If the disk is still a part of the diskgroup, then clean up ASM disk header.
# dd if=/dev/null of=/dev/rdsk/c5t1d3 bs=8192 count=1000
Add a renamed disk again.

Oracle 11gR2 Performance Issue
We have Oracle 11gR2 (11.2.0.2) database on HP-UX for GIS application.
We recently upgraded this database from 10g to 11gR2, Everything is working good, no issue expect one month end process. This process hung because of Library Cache Wait (Concurrency). Whenever we start this process the Library Cache Wait is increasing and the process is not completing.

Oracle 11gr2 database installation using ASM on standalone Server.
Hello Guys,
Environment is as below:
Oracle 11gr2
ASM
Enterprise Linux Server release 5.5 (Carthage)
I never did oracle 11gr2 installation using ASM and I need to install Oracle software on standalone server and then create database 11g Release 2.
I have following doubts:
1. Do we need to install Grid infrastructure software for standalone server as well ?
2. Does Grid Infrastructure software comes separately or alongwith DB software ?
3.Is Grid software same for RAC and standalone server setup ?
4.Do we need to create user Grid for installation of Grid for standalone server as well ?
can anyone give me full steps from scratch ?
Regards,

Installing Oracle 11gR2 RAC Problem: ASM disks
Folks,
Hello. I am installing Oracle 11gR2 RAC using 2 Virtual Machines (rac1 and rac2 whose OS are Oracle Linux 5.6) in VMPlayer and according to the tutorial
http://appsdbaworkshop.blogspot.com/2011/10/11gr2-rac-on-linux-56-using-vmware.html
At the first time, I create VM rac1. While its OS Oracle Linux 5.6 is booting, initializing ASMLib Driver OK. I create 5 ASM disks successfully using the command:
[root@rac1 /]# /etc/init.d/oracleasm createdisk ASMDISK1 /dev/sdb1
Output: Marking disk "ASMDISK1" as an ASM disk: OK
Because the hard disk space of rac1 is not enough to install Database, I create VM rac1 again with bigger hard disk space (30GB). I do everything the same with that at the first time. But this time, While OS Oracle Linux 5.6 is booting, initializing ASMLib Driver failed. I create 5 ASM disks using the same command:
[root@rac1 /]# /etc/init.d/oracleasm createdisk ASMDISK1 /dev/sdb1
Output: Marking disk "ASMDISK1" as an ASM disk: failed
But when I use the command:
[root@rac1 /]# /etc/init.d/oracleasm listdisks
Output: ASMDISK1 ASMDISK2 ASMDISK3 ASMDISK4 ASMDISK5
My questions are:
First, can the 5 disks "ASMDISK1 ASMDISK2 ASMDISK3 ASMDISK4 ASMDISK5" be used correctly in spite of Marking disk "ASMDISK1(2 3 4 5)" as an ASM disk failed ?
Second, how to fix OS Oracle Linux 5.6 so that initializing ASMLib Driver OK while booting ?
Thanks.Folks,
Hello. The issue is solved by myself. Thanks. -
Sun Solaris 10,Upgrade 8 or higher,having issues with VxFS,for Oracle 11gr2
A while ago, we tried doing a prototype upgrade of our main Oracle 10g db to Oracle 11gr2.
The OS on which our Oracle 10g is running is Sun Solaris 10, upgrade 4.
According to Oracle 11gr2 documentation, we need Sun Solaris 10, upgrade 6 or higher for Oracle 11g2.
The filesystem we are using is VxFS, Veritas File System.
According to our system administrator, we had issues , making Sun Solar 10, upgrade 8 , work with the VxFS filesystem.
I was wondering if anybody is running Oracle 11g2 on Sun Solaris 10 upgrade 6 or higher with VxFS file system.
At present, our Oracle db upgrade project is on a hold, because of the above issue. So your help on this , can really help us in figuring out if there is an issue between VxFS filesystem and Sun Solaris 10 OS.
Thanks
AshishHi Ashish,
We are not running Veritas Cluster file system.
We tried moving our Oracle 10g r2 db on ZFS ,before doing the upgrade and performance on ZFS was worst.
ZFS has certain memory parameter setting. If you did not configure that then ZFS will eat your complete system memory.
My system administrator, has gotten a copy of Solaris 10 upgrade 9 and will try that with VxFS.
I was curious to find out if folks are running Oracle 11g on Sun Solaris 10 with VxFS file system and if they had experienced any issue.If you can Install Vxfs on Oracle Soalris 10 U9, then according to me there sholudn't be any limitations for an oracle database.
Recently i installed Oracle database 11.2.0.2 on one of my test server. I have created two databases - one on ZFS and another on ASM.
Refer:
http://appsdbaworkshop.blogspot.com/2010/10/installation-of-11202-on-oracle-solaris.html
We dont have any performance issues. We are testing it for the performance benchmarks on both of the filesystem.
If you can Install Vxfs on Oracle Soalris 10 U9, then according to me there sholudn't be any limitations for an oracle database.

Oracle 11gR2 RAC clusterware not picking up ASM diskgroups
Hello: I had to deinstall a failed oracle 11gR2 rac cuslterware. But, not the asm disks are not in the OUI pick list. How can I resolve that?
The storage is on SAN partitions.Probably the install already put something on the disks.
Clean them with dd if=/dev/zero of=<your asm disks> bs=1M count=10

We have Oracle 11gR2(11.2.0.1) RAC (2-node) on HP-UX. And we have some issue with SCAN Listener configuration.
Issue-1*
LISTENER_SCAN1 is running on node-1 and LISTENER_SCAN2 & LISTENER_SCAN3 is running on node-2. This is how it's running always. And we have 3 RAC database (cadprod, omsprod & eaiprod) running on this server. Both the instances of cadprod & eaiprod is registered on all three SCAN listeners.
But omsprod is having issues, omsprod1 & omsprod2 are registered on LISTENER_SCAN1 on node-1, but omsprod2 is not register on LISTENER_SCAN2 & LISTENER_SCAN3 on node-2. and some times we are not able to connect the second instance (omsprod2).
Issue-2*
And if node-1 goes down, all three databases are failover to node-2, after that we are not able to connect omsprod & eaiprid database its giving the following error on client side,
ORA-12516, TNS:listener could not find available handler with matching protocol stack
once the node-1 came back its allowing the connection. But cadprod doesn't have this issue, we are able to connect after the failover.

How to create an asm instance manaually? oracle 11gr2.
env: oracle 11gr2 os: hpux or aix single machine , not rac.
question:how to create an asm instance manaually?? diskgroup,listener,db ,they can be resigistered to crs??
can anyone give me document about it?Hi,
This is a simple answer:
Automatic Storage Management (ASM)
ASM was a new storage option introduced with Oracle Database 10gR1 that provides the services of a filesystem, logical volume manager, and software RAID in a platform-independent manner. ASM can stripe and mirror your disks, allow disks to be added or removed while the database is under load, and automatically balance I/O to remove "hot spots." It also supports direct and asynchronous I/O and implements the Oracle Data Manager API (simplified I/O system call interface) introduced in Oracle9i.
ASM is not a general-purpose filesystem and can be used only for Oracle data files, redo logs, and control files. Files in ASM can be created and named automatically by the database (by use of the Oracle Managed Files feature) or manually by the DBA. Because the files stored in ASM are not accessible to the operating system, the only way to perform backup and recovery operations on databases that use ASM files is through Recovery Manager (RMAN).
ASM is implemented as a separate Oracle instance that must be up if other databases are to be able to access it. Memory requirements for ASM are light: only 64 MB for most systems.
Installing ASM
On Linux platforms, ASM can use raw devices or devices managed via the ASMLib interface. Oracle recommends ASMLib over raw devices for ease-of-use and performance reasons. ASMLib 2.0 is available for free download from OTN. This section walks through the process of configuring a simple ASM instance by using ASMLib 2.0 and building a database that uses ASM for disk storage.
Determine Which Version of ASMLib You Need
ASMLib 2.0 is delivered as a set of three Linux packages:
* oracleasmlib-2.0 - the ASM libraries
* oracleasm-support-2.0 - utilities needed to administer ASMLib
* oracleasm - a kernel module for the ASM library
Each Linux distribution has its own set of ASMLib 2.0 packages, and within each distribution, each kernel version has a corresponding oracleasm package. The following paragraphs describe how to determine which set of packages you need.
First, determine which kernel you are using by logging in as root and running the following command:
uname -rm
Ex:
# uname -rm
2.6.9-22.ELsmp i686
The example shows that this is a 2.6.9-22 kernel for an SMP (multiprocessor) box using Intel i686 CPUs.
Use this information to find the correct ASMLib packages on OTN:
1. Point your Web browser to http://www.oracle.com/technology/tech/linux/asmlib/index.html
2. Select the link for your version of Linux.
3. Download the oracleasmlib and oracleasm-support packages for your version of Linux
4. Download the oracleasm package corresponding to your kernel. In the example above, the oracleasm-2.6.9-22.ELsmp-2.0.0-1.i686.rpm package was used.
Next, install the packages by executing the following command as root:
rpm -Uvh oracleasm-kernel_version-asmlib_version.cpu_type.rpm \
oracleasmlib-asmlib_version.cpu_type.rpm \
oracleasm-support-asmlib_version.cpu_type.rpm
Ex:
# rpm -Uvh \
> oracleasm-2.6.9-22.ELsmp-2.0.0-1.i686.rpm \
> oracleasmlib-2.0.1-1.i386.rpm \
> oracleasm-support-2.0.1-1.i386.rpm
Preparing... ########################################### [100%]
1:oracleasm-support ########################################### [ 33%]
2:oracleasm-2.6.9-22.ELsm########################################### [ 67%]
3:oracleasmlib ########################################### [100%]
Configuring ASMLib
Before using ASMLib, you must run a configuration script to prepare the driver. Run the following command as root, and answer the prompts as shown in the example below.
# /etc/init.d/oracleasm configure
Configuring the Oracle ASM library driver.
This will configure the on-boot properties of the Oracle ASM library
driver. The following questions will determine whether the driver is
loaded on boot and what permissions it will have. The current values
will be shown in brackets ('[]'). Hitting <ENTER> without typing an
answer will keep that current value. Ctrl-C will abort.
Default user to own the driver interface []: oracle
Default group to own the driver interface []: dba
Start Oracle ASM library driver on boot (y/n) [n]: y
Fix permissions of Oracle ASM disks on boot (y/n) [y]: y
Writing Oracle ASM library driver configuration: [ OK ]
Creating /dev/oracleasm mount point: [ OK ]
Loading module "oracleasm": [ OK ]
Mounting ASMlib driver filesystem: [ OK ]
Scanning system for ASM disks: [ OK ]
Next you tell the ASM driver which disks you want it to use. Oracle recommends that each disk contain a single partition for the entire disk. See Partitioning the Disks at the beginning of this section for an example of creating disk partitions.
You mark disks for use by ASMLib by running the following command as root:
/etc/init.d/oracleasm createdisk DISK_NAME device_name
Tip: Enter the DISK_NAME in UPPERCASE letters.
Ex:
# /etc/init.d/oracleasm createdisk VOL1 /dev/sdb1
Marking disk "/dev/sdb1" as an ASM disk: [ OK ]
# /etc/init.d/oracleasm createdisk VOL1 /dev/sdc1
Marking disk "/dev/sdc1" as an ASM disk: [ OK ]
# /etc/init.d/oracleasm createdisk VOL1 /dev/sdd1
Marking disk "/dev/sdd1" as an ASM disk: [ OK ]
Verify that ASMLib has marked the disks:
# /etc/init.d/oracleasm listdisks
VOL1
VOL2
VOL3
Create the ASM Instance
ASM runs as a separate Oracle instance which can be created and configured using the Oracle Universal Installer. Now that ASMLib is installed and the disks are marked for use, you can create an ASM instance.
Log in as oracle and start runInstaller:
$ ./runInstaller
1. Select Installation Method
* Select Advanced Installation
* Click on Next
2. Specify Inventory Directory and Credentials
* Inventory Directory: /u01/app/oracle/oraInventory
* Operating System group name: oinstall
* Click on Next
3. Select Installation Type
* Select Enterprise Edition
* Click on Next
4. Specify Home Details
* Name: OraDB10gASM
* Path: /u01/app/oracle/product/10.2.0/asm
Note:Oracle recommends using a different ORACLE_HOME for ASM than the ORACLE_HOME used for the database for ease of administration.
* Click on Next
5. Product-specific Prerequisite Checks
* If you've been following the steps in this guide, all the checks should pass without difficulty. If one or more checks fail, correct the problem before proceeding.
* Click on Next
6. Select Configuration Option
* Select Configure Automatic Storage Management (ASM)
* Enter the ASM SYS password and confirm
* Click on Next
7. Configure Automatic Storage Management
* Disk Group Name: DATA
* Redundancy
- High mirrors data twice.
- Normal mirrors data once. This is the default.
- External does not mirror data within ASM. This is typically used if an external RAID array is providing redundancy.
* Add Disks
The disks you configured for use with ASMLib are listed as Candidate Disks. Select each disk you wish to include in the disk group.
* Click on Next
8. Summary
* A summary of the products being installed is presented.
* Click on Install.
9. Execute Configuration Scripts
* At the end of the installation, a pop up window will appear indicating scripts that need to be run as root. Login as root and run the indicated scripts.
* Click on OK when finished.
10. Configuration Assistants
* The Oracle Net, Oracle Database, and iSQL*Plus configuration assistants will run automatically
11. End of Installation
* Make note of the URLs presented in the summary, and click on Exit when ready.
12. Congratulations! Your new Oracle ASM Instance is up and ready for use.
Kind regards

Reinstalling Oracle 11gR2 RAC Grid Problem - ASM Disks Group
Folks,
Hello.
I am installing Oracle 11gR2 RAC using 2 Virtual Machines (rac1 and rac2 whose OS are Oracle Linux 5.6) in VMPlayer.
I have been installing Grid Infrastructure using runInstaller in the first VM rac1 from step 1 to step 9 of 10.
On the step 9 of 10 in the Wizard, accidentally, I touch the Mouse, and the Wizard is gone.
The directory for installing Grid in the 2 VMs is the same: /u01
In order to make sure everything is correct, I delete entire directory /u01 in the 2 VMs and install Grid in rac1 again.
I have understood it's not the right way to delete /u01. The right way is to follow the tutorial
http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E11882_01/install.112/e22489/rem_orcl.htm#CBHEFHAC
But I have deleted /u01 and need to fix one by one. I install Grid again and get the error message on step 5 of 9 as follows:
[INS - 30516] Please specify unique disk groups.
[INS-3050] Empty ASM disk group.
Cause - Installer has detected the disk group name provided already exists on the system.
Action - Specify different disk group.
In Wizard, the previous Disk Group name is "DATA" and its Candidate disks (5 ASMDISKs) are gone. I try to use a different name "DATA2", but no ASMDISKs come up under "Candidate disks". For "ALL Disks", all ASMDISKs cannot be selected.
I want to use the same ASM disk group "DATA" and don't want to create a new disk group.
My question is:
How to have the previous ASM disks and its group "DATA" come up under "Candidate Disks" so that can use it again ?
Thanks.Hi, in case this helps anyone else. I got this INS-30516 error too was stumped for little while. I have 2 x 2-node RAC which are hitting same SAN. The first-built RAC has a DATA diskgroup. When went to build second RAC on new ASM disk new DIskgroup (but same diskgroup name DATA) got INS-30516 about diskgroup name already in use etc. Finally figured out all that was required was to restrict diskstring using button in installer to only retrieve the LUNS for this RAC (this was quick and dirty - all LUNS for both RAC being presented to both RAC). Once diskstring only searched for the LUNS required for this RAC only, e.g.
ORCL:DATA_P* (for DATA_PD and FRA_PD)
the error went away.
I also have DATA_DR and FRA_DR presenting to both RAC. Apparently it scans the header and if it finds a diskgroup name that is already in use based on the diskstring scan it will not allow reuse of the diskgroup name since it has no way of knowing that the other ASM disks are for a different RAC.

Oracle 11gR2 RAC in LDOM Network issue
Hi, Requesting your expert advise regarding this configuration.
We are implementing LDOM 2.2 on two SPARC T4-4 for Oracle 11gR2 RAC; Solaris 10 U10 on both control and guest domain. The setup for each primary/control domain is: Two 10g links aggregated and have four VLAN trunked on the aggregate. vSwitch created using the aggr as the device as following per T4-4:
NOTE: VLAN 1501 is for data connection and VLAN 10 is for heartbeat for one RAC cluster and VL 1601 and 11 is for another RAC. all together four LDOMS.
ldm add-vswitch vid=1501,1601,10,11 net-dev=aggr1 primary-vsw0 primary
ldm add-vnet pvid=1501 vnetprod primary-vsw0 guest1

ldm add-vnet pvid=1601 vnetprod primary-vsw0 guest2
ldm add-vnet pvid=11 vnethb primary-vsw0 guest2
vnet inside the LDOM are not tagged:
