Oracle 8i, Why would it accept date of 00-JUN-01 without an error

I have an application (On Track for Training) written in power builder and using sqlnet. When the user signs on to the Oracle 8i Database, using ODBC driver 8.1.5.5, some of my users send an invalid date into a controlkey field. The format has a 00 day in the date field (00-JUN-01). We get no errors when the date gets stored - but it screws up my application for anyone else trying to sign into it. When the program sees that invalid date, it bombs out. Any record those users save while using the system also stores this invalid date format with no errors from Oracle. They only get an error when they try to view the record after it has been saved.
Any ideas as to what could be looking like a valid date to Oracle but really is a 00 day? I just can't understand why it's not erroring out and stopping these people from creating havoc in the system. The software devlopers blame the ODBC driver - but no one seems to be able to tell me what about the ODBC driver could be wrong. I'm thinking it's a Windows/System .dll file that is getting overwritten any time these users install a new piece of software on their system. I just have no idea which ones to look at.
Any help would be appreciated.

Wierd! Regardless of what the ODBC driver does, the database should reject an invalid date. The fact that Oracle appears to be storing invalid data would seem to imply that the ODBC driver isn't at fault...
I would tend to discount the possibility of an overwritten DLL causing this. Nothing that the client does should ever cause a database to store an invalid date. Most of the time, when there's a DLL conflict, the failures are a lot less subtle.
I'd strongly suggest that you contact Oracle support about this. At a minimum, there's apparently a database bug. Probably, there's some sort of interaction between the ODBC driver, OCI (the API the ODBC driver uses to communicate with the database), and the database that allows the root bug to be manifested. There may even be bugs in the ODBC or OCI layers. It certainly sounds like this is a problem that someone will have to spend a few hours with some debugging tools to figure out what's going on.
One other route you might try is updating all your components with the latest patchsets-- perhaps the bugs have already been identified & fixed. If you go to <ftp://oracle-ftp.oracle.com/server/patchsets/wgt_tech/server/windowsNT/81patchsets/>, you can grab the latest 8.1.5 and 8.1.6 patchsets (8.1.5.1.1 & 8.1.6.3.4). Update both your client & server with the appropriate patchset. Also, you can grab the 8.1.5.7 ODBC driver off of OTN and install that. If the problem goes away, life is good. If it doesn't, I think you're going to need support's help.

  • Why would OSX suddenly startup and then zoom in without any keystroke?

    Hi all,
all of a sudden following happens when I boot my mac mini. The desktop shows up normally and then after 1 second it zooms in to something like 90% (just so that the top bar vanishes). I can zoom out then and all is fine but I cannot get the mac to change this startup behaviour.
Any help how to change things back to 'normal' would be very much appreciated. Thanks Thomas
Mac Mini Dual Core   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   2 GB Ram

    Hello Thomas,
Three suggestions: First of all, as soon as you've zoomed out to the correct "unzoomed" appearance of the screen, log out immediately. Then try logging in again. That should fix it if there is a problem with a remembered preference.
If that doesn't resolve the situation, try opening the Universal Access control pane in System Preferences. Click on the Seeing tab, then on the Options… button in the Zoom pane. Make sure the "Minimum zoom" slider is all the way to the left (set to 1).
If that doesn't fix it, then go to ~/Library/Preferences (in your Home folder) and trash the com.apple.universalaccess.plist file. Then log out and back in again.
    Keep us posted,
    Archie

  • Why oracle "to_date" accepts Date-parameters

I tested out function "to_date" as you see below and I see that Oracle allows me to give to that function parameter with textual data type and also allows to parameter's datatype to be Date.
Connected to Oracle Database 10g Enterprise Edition Release 10.2.0.4.0
    SQL>
    SQL> select to_date(sysdate) as s from dual;--21.10.2010
    S
    21.10.2010
    SQL> select to_date(sysdate, 'DD.MM.YYYY') as s from dual;--21.10.2010
    S
    21.10.2010
    SQL> select to_date('21.10.2010', 'DD.MM.YYYY') as s from dual;--21.10.2010
    S
    21.10.2010
    SQL> select to_date(to_date('21.10.2010', 'DD.MM.YYYY')) as s from dual;--21.10.2010
    S
    21.10.2010
SQL> I entered into Search engine "http://www.lycos.com/" phrase "oracle to_date function" and it gave me link to documentation of that function:
    http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/server.102/b14200/functions183.htm
    and the documentation says:
    >
    Purpose
TO_DATE converts char of CHAR, VARCHAR2, NCHAR, or NVARCHAR2 datatype to a value of DATE datatype.
    >
My question is: why the function accepts Date data types? what occures behind curtains when Date is passed in? Or what explanation there is, that documentation seems to lie?
Also, have you too noticed that the forum has been oftenly down near past days?

Any function that accepts a VARCHAR2 can be passed a DATE. Oracle will simply implicitly cast the DATE to a VARCHAR2 (using the session's NLS_DATE_FORMAT). The same way that it would implicitly cast a NUMBER to a VARCHAR2.
Of course, if the implicit conversion of the date to a string doesn't match the explicit format mask passed to TO_DATE, you'll have a problem. If your session's NLS_DATE_FORMAT was 'MM.DD.YYYY', for example, the TO_DATE would fail because Oracle would implicitly cast the date to a string in the format MM.DD.YYYY and then try to convert that to a date using the format mast DD.MM.YYYY.

  • Why would oracle 9i drivers faster than oracle 10g drivers against a 10g?

I'm skeptical of the claim but we have a system at work and tests have been done that apparently is showing that the older oracle 9i thin jdbc driver is performing a fetch faster than the 10g driver. This for a query that is currently doing a full table scan.
Is there a default setting in 10g vs 9i that can explain why the perceived query performance is faster with the older thin driver?

    steffi2 wrote:
What was observed was that when they started using the old Oracle 8.1.7 8i client jar against this 10g data the actual execution plan changed dramatically to use indexes where was previously it was not doing so and it was doing a full tablescan.
Why would the introduction of the old 8i jar have this affect?Maybe the test is flawed. For example one test was run with the network was loaded while the other wasn't. Or different connection parameters.
That said I believe somewhere the claim has been made that Oracle drivers changed from one API to another somewhat recently. Thus that could be the source.
Or maybe something to do with hints.

  • On powering up I got a message date and time were changed to before 2008. Why would this happen?

I used the computer this morning to check email.  Shut it down and powered back up this afternoon and a box appeared telling me the date and time were set for before 2008 (actually for 12/31/2000) and needed to be reset.  Why would this happen?

No, it had 3:30 hours left.  I make it a point of not letting it drain.  I haven't had a problem since then, so I'm hoping all is ok.  Thanks

The unix commands you need are:
    GetFileInfo
    SetFileInfo
    and maybe find
for cryptic details use the man command
    Macintosh-HD -> Applications -> Utilities -> Terminal
    man SetFileInfo
You may use the SetFileInfo command to set the file type & the program which will open the file.

  • Why would white space and line breaks in sql query increase runtime

Using 11.2.0.3.0 on unix sprac server, 8 cpus 32 cores 12TB storage. We have 16 batch servers doing inserts and ~100 users doing mostly queries.
We have a wierd issue,  we have a long query that takes 30 seconds to run 1st time then 10-20 secs every other time. Based on knowledge of DB we expected it to take a lot less.  Then a developer reformatted it by taking removing extra white space and line breaks.  all of sudden query takes 6 secs first time and 0.8 every other time.  we tripled checked to ensure they are identical and that only difference is white space and line breaks.  We tried it with SQLDeveloper, TOAD, SQLPLUS, from out desktops, appserver. we could reproduce it every time, with white space 10-20 secs without it 0.8 secs.  Query is 200 lines long with white space 30 without it.
Why would having white space make such a dramatic difference?  because the query is longer eventhough its identical?  We checked parsing times, etc, no difference.  Is there some network setting, oracle parameter, sqlnet setting?  We spent hours looking on google and found nother

Do you have some sort of horrific network connection between the client and the database such that it would take 8.5 seconds to transmit a few kb of SQL to the server?  That seems most unlikely.
How are you determining the query plan?  Are you absolutely sure that both SQL statements have the same plan_hash_value when they are actually executed (not just when you generate a query plan without executing it)?  What are the differences in wait events when you execute the two?
The sql_id will change when you add or remove whitespace.  There are various methods of modifying query plans that are tied to a sql_id.  My wager would be that you have a profile/ outline/ etc. that is not there for the reformatted one which is causing a query plan difference.  My next guess is that you have an accepted plan for the old statement, you haven't set up a process to let the plan evolve, and the reformatted statement starts with the plan that the old statement would get if you allowed the plan to evolve.

  • Why would anyone want to use ASM Clustered File system?

    DB Version: 11gR2
    OS : Solaris, AIX, HP-UX
I've read about the new feature ACFS.
    http://www.oracle-base.com/articles/11g/ACFS_11gR2.php
But why would anyone want to store database binaries in a separate Filesystem created by Oracle?

    Hi Vitamind,
how do these binaries interact with the CPU when they want something to be done?
ACFS should work with Local OS (Solaris) to communicate with the CPU . Isn't this kind of double work?ACFS dont work with .... but provide filesystem to Local S.O
There may be extra work, but that's because there are more resources that a common filesystem.
Oracle ACFS executes on operating system platforms as a native file system technology supporting native operating system file system application programming interfaces (APIs).
ACFS is a general purpose POSIX compliant cluster file system. Being POSIX compliant, all operating system utilities we use with ext3 and other file systems can also be used with Oracle ACFS given it belongs to the same family of related standards.
    ACFS Driver Model
An Oracle ACFS file system is installed as a dynamically loadable vendor operating system (OS) file system driver and tool set that is developed for each supported operating system platform. The driver is implemented as a Virtual File System (VFS) and processes all file and directory operations directed to a specific file system.
It makes sense you use the ACFS if you use some of the features below:
    • Oracle RAC / RAC ONE NODE
    • Oracle ACFS Snapshots
    • Oracle ASM Dynamic Volume Manager
    • Cluster Filesystem for regular files
    ACFS Use Cases
    • Shared Oracle DB home
    • Other “file system” data
    • External tables, data loads, data extracts
    • BFILES and other data customer chooses not to store in db
    • Log files (consolidates access)
    • Test environments
    • Copy back a previous snapshot after testing
    • Backups
    • Snapshot file system for point-intime backups
    • General purpose local or cluster file system
    • Leverage ASM manageability
Note : Oracle ACFS file systems cannot be used for an Oracle base directory or an Oracle grid infrastructure home that contains the software for Oracle Clusterware, Oracle ASM, Oracle ACFS, and Oracle ADVM components.

  • I'm unable to update Firefox. operation can't be completed because you don't have permission to access some of the items. I own the computer, why would I not have permission? This has happened other times and I don't know what it means.

I just wanted to update firefox and it won't let me. I drag the icon into applications, then a window ask me if I want to replace older version. I click yes and the window mentioned above appears. I purchased this computer new, I'm the only owner. Why would I not give myself permission to do something on my own computer.

If you get an error message that you do not have sufficient permissions or have problems with updating then easiest is to download the full version and trash the currently installed version to do a clean install of the new version.
Download a new copy of the Firefox program and save the DMG file to the desktop
    * Firefox 4.0.x: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all.html
    * Firefox 3.6.x: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all-older.html
    * Trash the current Firefox application to do a clean (re-)install
    * Install the new version that you have downloaded
Your profile data is stored elsewhere in the [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox Firefox Profile Folder], so you won't lose your bookmarks and other personal data.

  • Why does my Infinity date keep getting put back

Hi I am wondering if somebody can tell me why my Infinity due date kees getting put back.  I was originally told it would be in my area last year, then by Sept 2013, then the end of the year, then Feb/Mar 2014 then The end of Mar then low and behold today it is beween Mar to June 2014.
I can understand some delays but the variation of these dates is ridiculous I feel BT are picking dates out of the air to stop customers moving elswhere.  I am relly fed up waiting and being strung along with ficticious dates and promises.
I have seen engineers working in the Bt boxes in my area for many months.
As for signing up for information on Infinity from BT that is a Joke I signed up for that 2 years ag and have so far had not one single bit of information of any kind from them.  I would have expected some feedback on how well the roll out is going etc to encourage potential customers of the benefits etc.  very very poor customer service on this front I feel

This is a BT Retail residential customer to customer forum. The problem of dates changing is an Openreach responsibility and not BT Retail.
There are various reasons for this to happen such as planning permission for cabinets, power supplies and commercial reasons.
Up until recently you could email Openreach and ask when your cabinet was likely to be upgraded however Openreach are no longer giving out that information, instead they are replying:-
Thank you for your contact to us. Please note that we will not be responding to you by email but, would like to point you to the Openreach Superfast Fibre website and the FAQ section that will provide answers to the most commonly asked questions. It will also provide links to those service providers that sell fibre broadband at the moment so you can check if your particular line is enabled.
    http://www.superfast-openreach.co.uk/where-and-when/
So in short, you just need to keep checking to see if your cabinet has been up graded.
If you use this checker it will tell what cabinet you are on and what services it can receive
