Oracle 9i and RAC

The client will be using Oracle9i as their database (which has Real Application Clustering), and also Oracle9iAS as their application servers. Their architecture is 3-tier, and development will be done on the J2EE platform. They are using Oracle's JDeveloper for development.
One of the potential risks that we found is that the client is planning to place most of the business logic (they define it roughly as "anything that requires data manipulation on the database") on the database servers. These will be programmed in PL/SQL. This was advised by Oracle consultants, saying that PL/SQL on the database server will perform better than Java entity beans deployed on the application server. Only very little business logic will be programmed as Java beans on the application servers. The client feels that logically this is still 3-tier and Oracle's Real Application Clustering will ensure scalability of the database servers.
Looking at this approach, we feel this is not very much 3-tier anymore, because the business logic is tightly coupled with the database. We foresee that there will be issues with independence of business logic and database access layers, flexibility, portability, modularity, maintainability and scalability.
What we would like to find out is:
- We'd like to hear your opinions on this approach of placing business logic on the database and using PL/SQL to code it.
- What are the risks of using this approach?
- What are the alternatives (entity beans? session beans? Java Data Objects?)
- How proven is Oracle Real Application Clustering and how much will it help client in this situation?

if the app needs to be a 3-tier then it makes sense to put the business logic in app server. the advantage here is
you can clone the app server to scale for users/sessions (plus the scalability from the oracle RAC) that is a double whammy.
eventhough pl/sql is advantageous in terms of performance, it constrains you to oracle.
if the business logic is database independent. so you can switch to any other database.
the other alternative is writing the java code and publishing it as pl/sql procedures in the database. this is the middle path
approach, if you want to port the app to another database vendor, you can do with minimal effort (compared to rewriting the pl/sql).
the predomoinant factor in a web app is how are you going to manage persistance of a user session.
container managed persistence or database managed persistence, the choice of the level of sophistication at the web app level determines which way you
want to go. to give persistence feature you might have to put the logic in beans and put the beans in app server.
why do they need RAC for scalability?? they could create multiple clones of app server and have them work load managed , i guess that would be far cheaper than having to spend money on RAC hardware/software.
if 99.99% availibility is the concern then RAC makes business sense...
a few thoughts, which i hope you will find useful.

  • Oracle Versions and RAC

    We are considering running Oracle 10g and 11g RAC on the same cluster.. wondering if anyone has tried it before ? If yes, any recommendations ?
    Thanks,

    Cost is the big factor. We have certain environments that have no intention of moving to 11.. but some do. Cost moves around. This is simply trading one kind of cost for another. Especially if all environments are covered by an Oracle Support contract. Then the cost is not Oracle related.
    But that ultimately is a PHB decision.
    Instead of buying dedicated RAC clusters for the offending ones.. its a thought to run 2 versions on the same servers... ofcourse with the higher CRS.However, yes you can run run a mix ... as Dan says, not necessarily recommended. MUST use highest available CRS and be very careful that the CRS supports all version of the DB.
    (And plan on having your interconnect flooded.)
    I highly recommend testing the bejazis out of it to verify your shop can indeed handle the configuration.

  • Mulitple Oracle Homes and RAC

    I want to install multiple SAP systems (SolMan, ECC, PI, etc) to a DB instance with Oracle RAC so that they can share resources and for High Availability.  The central instances will be running of virtually separate systems using VMWare.
    As per the white paper for doing a SAP installation with RAC, I need to install one SAP system before I install RAC.  But when I do the second SAP system that creates a second Oracle_home, do I need to install RAC again?  Or do I need to complete all the database installations before I install RAC?
    I want to be able to share the hardware but using MCOD is out because of the many problems associated with that.

    Hi Steve,
    ok - I understand.
    According to Oracle Metalink 220970.1 it´s possible to run more than one instance on a RAC but the resource manager will not be able to share load across the instances so one may impact the other.
    That document is quite good and answers a lot of questions, also some of those, you posted in your initial question (such as if the DB software must be installed on all notes or how to convert a single instance into a RAC instance etc.)
    "Note 527843 - Oracle RAC support in the SAP environment" also states, that ASM and Raw devices cannot be used in SAP/RAC-environments
    This is a really nice an interesting project, technically it should be possible to implement but I can´t say, which implications will arise.

  • Oracle lite and RAC

    We are experiencing difficulties with installing oracle lite with Oracle RAC 10.2. Does anybody knows if this is possible?
    thank's in advance!

    The problem's were mostly implementation specific. What you need to do for RAC is to configure the mobile server to use the thick client in stead of the thin client. There is a metalink document about this (Doc ID: Note:339108.1).
    How to configure the mobile server with a RAC DB
    Solution
    1) Edit the file $ORACLE_HOME/mobile/server/bin/webtogo.ora
    2) Change this Parameter:
    ADMIN_JDBC_URL=jdbc:oracle:thin:@hostname:port:1521
    TO
    ADMIN_JDBC_URL=jdbc:oracle:thin:@DESCRIPTION=(ADDRESS=(PROTO =TCP)(HOST=clora1vip.aem.torin
    .it)(PORT=1521))(ADDRESS=(PROTO =TCP)(HOST=host_name)(PORT=host_port))(LOAD_BALANCE=yes
    (CONNECT_DATA=(SERVER=DEDICATED)(SERVICE_NAME=sid_name)(FAILOVER_MODE=(TYPE=SELE
    CT)(METHOD=BASIC)(RETRIES=180)(DELAY=5))))
    3) Save the File and restart the mobile server.

  • Oracle SE and RAC licensing

    Oracle Real Application Cluster (RAC) is provided 'free' with Oracle Database Standard Edition. If RAC is used with this edition, is it licensed as an extra-cost option i.e. do you need to buy extra licenses or is the licensing part of the Standard Edition license?

    yes.it comes free but if you use it you have to pay a license as i remember for every node.you can also ask more about the prices by calling any oracle hub near from you or opena service request.
    Kind regards

  • Oracle Clustre, Oracle Cluster with RAC and Oracle 10g

    Is there a difference between Oracle Cluster and Oracle Cluster with RAC? Please explain. Do existing database codes run unmodified in Cluster or Cluster with RAC environment? What needs to be modified to make existing SQL codes RAC-aware. How to achieve 'all automatic' in case of failure and resubmission of Queries from failed instance to a running instance?
    In 10g environment, do we need to consider licensing of RAC as a separate product? What are additional features one derives in 10g that is not in Cluster +RAC?
    Your comments and pointers to comparison study and pictorial clarification will be very helpful.

    Oracle cluster like failsafe before or Veritas Cluster or other vendor's cluster is meant for HA (high availability) purpose. Which 2 nodes or more can see a shared disk with 1 active node. Whenever this active node failed through heartbeat other machine will know and will take the database over from there.
    Oracle RAC is more for HA and load balance. In Oracle RAC 2 or more nodes are accessing the database at the same time so it spread load across all these nodes.
    I believe Oracle 10g RAC still need seperate license for it. But you need to call Oracle or check the production document to verify it.
    Oracle 10g besides improvement in RAC. It's main improvement is on the build in management of the database itself. It can monitored and selftune itself to much furthur level then before and give DBA much more information to determine the cause of the problem as well. Plus improvement on lots of utility as well like RMAN , data pump etc... I don't want to get into too much detail on this you can check on their 10g new features for more detail view.
    Hope this help. :)

    hi
    are the libraries different between oracle 10.2.0 and RAC 10.2.0. we are upgarding to RAC and i am trying to findout if i have to recompile my c++ binaries using RAC 10.2.0

    yes we have a standalone version of 10g being converted to RAC mode..
    old version
    Oracle Database 10g Enterprise Edition Release 10.2.0.3.0 - 64bit Production
    With the Partitioning, OLAP and Data Mining options
    converted to
    Oracle Database 10g Enterprise Edition Release 10.2.0.3.0 - 64bit Production

    i understand the binaries would be different, but are the libraries different too?

  • Grid And RAC in oracle 10g

    Hi Experts,
    I'm new to Grid And RAC implementation.
    Is there any good links which I can learn the basics and implementation methods of Grid.???

    Grid computing is a concept. Wikipedia has a fairly decent description at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grid_computing and there is even an infocenter on the concept at http://www.gridcomputing.com/
    Oracle leans toward the 'Utility Computing' idea in that wiki. This is especially true in the Oracle Application Server (subject for a different forum). In that mode of Grid, you add or drop out instances of programs as demanded by the load, just like you would add or drop electrical generators on the power grid.
    Taking generators off line permits maintenance, reduces wear and tear when the beasts are idle, and allows the minimum number of fully-loaded generators (and therefore minimum support personnel, support expenses) to be used as compared to lots of partially used ones - why not do that with computers as well?
    In the database world, Oracle provides RAC as a coordinated cluster of database instances. The cluster may be grown or shrunk, not without some care, in a fashion similar to the power generators.
    And just as with the electrical generators, people have to design the new instance, manage how and when it is added to or taken off the cluster, even figure out how to balance the load across the various units. Once designed, and put in place, it is relatively easy to add or remove an instance from the RAC, and (if done correctly) there is a minimum disruption to running applications.
    Be aware that the analogy is less-than-perfect.
    I recommend getting the Apress book Pro Oracle Database 10g RAC on Linux: Installation, Administration, and Performance as the basic manual for understanding and learning RAC. Read that and then use the demos and examples from Howard's site at http://www.dizwell.com and Jeff's setups at http://www.oracle.com/technology/pub/articles/tech_dba.html#linux And finally, go through the RAC material at http://www.oracle.com/technology/tech/grid/index.html

  • During the installation of grid infra(cluster) for Oracle 11.2 RAC one.

    Good Day All, and thanks in advance…
    During the installation of grid infrastructure(cluster) for Oracle 11.2 RAC One Node on AIX6.1 ( PROD) , ASM used. I am getting below errors when executing ./root.sh
    Upon investigation ,I managed to get note: 1068212.1 from the support oracle site ( see below for details) . I might be hitting Unpublished bug 8670579. I also logged Severity 2 SR with Oracle support to get the bug/patch fix and no one has attended the call.
    This might be configuration issue or otherwise , if you have experienced the same issue please assist ? ( if you need more logfiles please feel free to request)….
    I ran the Cluster Verify Check – all passed.
    Many Thanks

    Hi,
    We are also trying to install 11.2.0.2 Grid infrastructure for Oracle RAC One Node on AIX 6.1. We did a POC in our lab environment and after much struggle got that working. Now we are building 4 clusters in the production environment and the first cluster installation failed while running root.sh on node2. We already have a Sev1 ticket open with Oracle Support but have not heard anything.
    Here is root.sh output from node2. The two node names are p01dou416 and p01dou417.

  • New Note 790189.1 - Oracle Clusterware and Application Failover Management

    Hi all,
    please, note the newly created Metalink Note 790189.1 - Oracle Clusterware and Application Failover Management if you want to use Oracle Clusterware as a general purpose cluster solution. The note intends to clarify and to explain the current situation in regards to the supportability of applications managed by Oracle Clusterware.
    In environments not including Oracle RAC, Oracle Clusterware still provides the level of high availability that is commonly known to be achievable for applications and databases managed in (failover) cluster environments. These environments can include Oracle Single Instance Databases, Oracle Application Servers, Oracle Enterprise Manager components, third party databases, or any other kind of application. (For more information on Oracle Clusterware 11g in general, please, refer to [Oracle Clusterware homepage|http://otn.oracle.com/clusterware].)
    Metalink Note 790189.1 - Oracle Clusterware and Application Failover Management is tightly integrated with the information on application failover management available on the [Oracle Clusterware homepage|http://otn.oracle.com/clusterware] and discusses typical questions like
    * Terminology
    * Script supportability and preconfigured agents
    * How to prove that action scripts work outside of Oracle Clusterware
    * Supportability of the Oracle Database Single Instance example scripts
    * How do I know whether a certain script is supported as a preconfigured agent?
    Metalink Note 790189.1, however, does not change the level of support that has been introduced for these kind of configurations as of Oracle Database 10g Release 2: "Generally, Oracle does not support action scripts in the strict terms of supporting individual code fragments. Oracle fully supports the integration of individual action scripts proven to run outside of Oracle Clusterware into the Oracle Clusterware management stack. Supported operations therefore typically involve crs_* commands such as crs_profile, crs_register, crs_setperm, crs_getperm, crs_start, crs_stop, and crs_relocate invoked on custom resources. If actions scripts are used as part of a preconfigured agent, Oracle or the application provider who provides the agent will support the integration of this agent, while only the application provider will provide support for the individual action scripts."
    Just for your information. Thanks,
    Markus

    not meant to be a question - rather an announcement.

  • Best practice for oracle 10.2 RAC with ASM

    Did any one tried/installed Oracle 10.2 RAC with ASM and CRS ?
    What is the best practice?
    1. separate home for CRS, ASM and Oracle Database?
    2. separate home for CRS and same home for ASM and Oracle Darabase?
    we set up the test environment with separate CRS, ASM and Oracle database homes, but we have tons of issues with the listener, spfile and tnsnames.ora files. So, seeking advise from the gurus who implimeted/tested the same ?

    I am getting ready to install the 10gR2 database software (10gR2 Clusterware was just installed ) and I want to have a home for ASM and another for database as you suggest. I have been told that 10gR2 was to have a smaller set of binaries that can be used for the ASM home ... but I am not sure how I go about installing it. The first look at the installer does not seem to make it obvious...Is it a custom build option?

  • Configured TNS in oracle client to RAC database

    Hi Experts,
    I have a 4 nodes oracle RAC in radhat 5.0
    both oracle database and client as 10.2.0.4.
    I created a TNS that works in our office but it does not work in our remote brance office.
    Based on experts instruction, I set up sqlnet trace at client side. but not any file that be gererated.
    In linux RAC database, I saw listener.log file as
    28-AUG-2009 11:00:01 * (CONNECT_DATA=(SERVER=DEDICATED)(SERVICE_NAME=sale)(INSTANCE_NAME=sale1)(CID=(PR OGRAM=D:\oracle\product\10.2.0\client_1\BIN\sqlplusw.exe)(HOST=TRAC3)(USER=JIM))) * (ADDRESS=(PROTOCOL=tcp)( HOST=xxx.18.10.xx)(PORT=3289)) * establish * sale * 0
    in client pc sqlnet.ora my setting as
    SQLNET.AUTHENTICATION_SERVICES= (NTS)
    TRACE_LEVEL_CLIENT = 16
    TRACE_FILE_CLIENT = client
    TRACE_DIRECTORY_CLIENT = C:\TEMPODBC

    SQLNET.INBOUND_CONNECT_TIMEOUT = 500
    SQLNET.SEND_TIMEOUT = 500
    SQLNET.RECV_TIMEOUT = 500
    I got a error as
    ERROR:
    ORA-03135: connection lost contact
    which wrong is in my case?
    I can connect to all other window database from thsi PC.But I can not connect to RAC database from this PC.
    However, I can ping RAC node's IP and VIP from this PC
    I also can connect to RAC database with TNS from other window PC.
    What do I need to do?
    ThanKs for any help.
    JIM

    Hi Sb92075,
    Thanks for your help.
    I got same error after comment #SQLNET.AUTHENTICATION_SERVICES= (NTS) in client sqlnet.ora in client.
    the server side does not have sqlnet file in linux platform.
    I also check listener services that all instance status is ready.
    I just saw sqlnet.log file in server side that error as
    Fatal NI connect error 12170.

  • Enabling oracle TAF on RAc environment

    Hi everybody.
    We are using Oracle 10g with RAC and ASM, i'm in testign phase now and i test if the one node is down automatically database connexion will use the other node. Note that we have only 02 nodes. For doing that i ahve seen to a documentation by creating CRM service to enable TAF (Transparent Application Failover). I've created TAF service from Netca and i have the crm service in my tnsnames node1. But when i run the following command:
    SQL> show parameter service
    i should have
    NAME TYPE VALUE
    service_names string devdb, CRM
    but in my case i have only
    NAME TYPE VALUE
    service_names string devdb
    If any one can tell me why CRM service doesn't appear or how to configure TAF exactly.
    I'm running oracle database 10g release 2 on HPUX v11.23 using RAC and ASM and HP ServiceGuard.
    Thanks for your help
    regards
    raitsarevo

    RAC One Node in 11g still requires the RAC licence option ! (unless you are running Standard Edition !)
    All major hardware vendors (IBM, HP, Sun etc) have had clustering solutions.
    SunCluster can be configured to allow "failover" of an Oracle Database Instance from one node to another.
    The database instance has to be on Shared Storage.
    SunCluster, itself, is a separately licensed product available from .......... Oracle now !
