Oracle 9i Upgradation to 11g
Dear All,
We plan to upgrade Oracle 9.2.0.1 under Windows 2003 Server 32-bit to Oracle 11g. There are two methods to upgrade using Database Upgrade Assistant (DBUA) and Manual. Which one is tter? Would there be any performance issues?
Do we need DBUA license or it is part of Oracle 11g?
Thanks
>
Oracle strongly recommend using DBUA for Oracle Database major releases or patch release upgrades.
The recommended method for upgrading to Oracle Database 11g Release 2 is to use the
Database Upgrade Assistant (DBUA). However, there are circumstances when using the
DBUA is not possible and it is more appropriate to use another method.

>
Choosing a particular method is dependent on several factors. Some of the factors that
help determine which upgrade method to use include the following:
<li>Version from which you are upgrading</li>
<li>Amount of downtime that is acceptable</li>
<li>Preference for a graphical user interface (GUI) versus SQL scripts</li>
<li>Complexity of the upgrade and amount of manual intervention required</li>
<li>Whether additional disk space or hardware resources are required</li>
<li>Whether the upgrade involves a different operating system architecture or migration to a new hardware platform</li>
>
You do not need any DBUA license; it is part of the Oracle Database 11g license.

Oracle Database upgrade to 11G (Host_Command Issues)
Sorry I'm posting this again. Original post in Database - Upgrade. I'm not getting a lot of clicks in that category
We recently upgraded to Oracle 11g (Oracle Database 11g Enterprise Edition Release 11.2.0.2.0 - 64bit Production). Our PL/SQL release: (PL/SQL Release 11.2.0.2.0 - Production). We use a lot of host commands inside our PL/SQL stored procedures. One of these included fetching data from an external server and pushing the data into Oracle Tables.
Most of this process is running fine, except the execution never completes. There is no issue data wise. It's just that the Host_command doesn't receive the completion status and seems to be running even though there's nothing going on in the background.
The Oracle e-business suite's concurrent program based on this stored proc also never completes, though it doesn't do anything in the background. For testing purpose, our DBA used 2 insert statements one before and one after the host_command. The insert before the host_command worked but not the one after. Please help! This is happening after we upgraded to 11g 3 weeks ago!
Thanks, Naveen Gagadam.Pl do not post duplicates - Upgrade to 11g, Host Command Inside Stored Proc doesn't end.

Hi Basis Expert,
We have an requirement of SAP upgrade which includes BW 3.5, CRM and R/3 (4.7).
These components needs to be upgraded to the latest version
BW 3.5 to BI 7.0
R/3 (4.7) to ECC 6.0
and also CRM upgrade to the new version
The OS used is AIX and DB used is oracle 10g.
Can anybody share the pros and cons of oracle DB upgrade from 10g to 11g after SAP upgrade.

Hi,
We have a SAP Oracle Database, the size is 1.5 TB.
The Hardware details are
Application – SAP ERP 6.0 EHP5 SPS6
Database – Oracle 10.2.0.2
OS Platform – AIX 5.3 TL05, SP06
HW – 8 Dual Core CPU’s, 256 GB RAM on DB-CI server
Test Environment : 32 GB RAM
Please from your experience let me know how much time will a 10g to 11g upgrade will take.
Regards,
Narayanhi,
There are several parameters you have to check before upgrading. Commonly it is independent of size of database.I think it will take as minimum 1 hour. Check the links to speed up upgrading and to consider pre-upgrade preparation:

Issues expected in oracle 9i/10g to 11g upgrade
Hi.
We are planning to migrate some 95 odd applications from Oracle 9i/10g to 11g. The upgrade method we are planning to use is to setup 11g target servers and move databases from source to target using import/export. Then do the necessary changes in the app code and connect the application to the new target server and test.
The source OS may be RHEL 3/4/5 or Solaris 8 and target OS will be RHEL 4/5 or Solaris 10.
My questions are:
1. What can be the expected database side issues possible while moving the structure+data+views/sps etc from old version to new version using import/export.
2. How much time may it take to move the database from source to target for say a 100GB database?
3. Will the change of OS have any implications on the movement from source to target?
4. What are the application side issues possible considering that most apps use odbc/jdbc to connect to the datastores?
5. Can any application side inline queries be affected?
6. Will there be any changes to the column data types from 9i/10g to 11g which can impact the code?
Thanks,
Vipul Shah

2. How much time may it take to move the database from source to target for say a 100GB database? Depends on many factors -- Try this on a test instance with similar hardware configuration and setup to production to estimate the time.
3. Will the change of OS have any implications on the movement from source to target?No, but you may relink the executable files -- How to Relink Oracle Database Software on UNIX [ID 131321.1]
4. What are the application side issues possible considering that most apps use odbc/jdbc to connect to the datastores? If you run AutoConfig with no errors when there should be no issues with ODBC/JDBC connectivity.
5. Can any application side inline queries be affected? It should not be affected expect if you custom code use some features which are no longer available in 11g database.
6. Will there be any changes to the column data types from 9i/10g to 11g which can impact the code?Typically no, however you need to do full and proper testing to verify.

Oracle 10g RAC to 11g RAC Upgrade on Solaris
Hi,
We are planning to do a migration of a 4 Node Oracle 10g RAC on Solaris 9 to 11g with Solaris 10. We'd like know what would be the best path to take. We cannot afford any downtime!
Options: Are these feasible? Which option is best? Any documents links?
a) Do a rolling upgrade of Oracle from 10g to 11g. Then take down individual nodes and upgrade the Solaris OS from 9 to 10 and bring them up back into the cluster. Is there any known issues taking this path? Is a rolling upgrade like this possible?
b) Do an upgrade of the Solaris OS from 9 to 10 on each node and then bring them back up? Is this practical? Does Oracle allow different versions of OS running on different nodes?
c) Use Dataguard with 2 different RAC environments (2 nodes each). How would this work? Is it the only possible way? Any steps please?
Thanksa) Do a rolling upgrade of Oracle from 10g to 11g. Then take down individual nodes and upgrade the Solaris OS from 9 to 10 and bring them up back into the cluster. Is there any known issues taking this path? Is a rolling upgrade like this possible?Hi,
first of all i would not change several components (OS, database version) at a time. My recommendation is to make small steps and start with the operating system first. Seconds recommendation is to test and test everything in your dev or test environment prior doing the upgrades in the productive environment. Trust me: You will face problems :-) So you better try it beforehand!
b) Do an upgrade of the Solaris OS from 9 to 10 on each node and then bring them back up? Is this practical? Does Oracle allow different versions of OS running on different nodes?As far i know you can run different operating system versions on different nodes if they are supported (Solaris 9 and 10 are).

Oracle Database Upgradation 10g to 11g (standalone DB & ASM is implemented) in HP unix ?
Kindly furnish the good links and screen shot documents.
Edited by: user11937849 on Apr 9, 2012 4:04 AMAs part of the upgrade, you might research how new Oracle 11g features can help your system run better.
Your upgraded system can effectively start using extended statistics, a very powerful new 11g feature, immediately after the upgrade. I have a detailed blog post on how to do this with OEM - http://iiotzov.wordpress.com/2011/11/01/get-the-max-of-oracle-11gr2-right-from-the-start-create-relevant-extended-statistics-as-a-part-of-the-upgrade

Hidden parameters appears after Oracle 11gR2 upgrade
Platform: HP-UX B.11.31 U ia64
Upgrading from: Oracle Database 11g Enterprise Edition Release 11.1.0.7.0 - 64bit Production
Upgrading to : Oracle Database 11g Enterprise Edition Release 11.2.0.3.0 - 64bit Production
Issue : There are around 130 hidden parameter appear after Oracle 11gR2 upgrade.
Before upgrade I have commented the hidden parameters on the PFILE. PFILE only to start the database for the Oracle 11gR2 upgrade.
Before upgrade, checking the hidden parameter:
SQL> SELECT name,description from SYS.V$PARAMETER WHERE name LIKE '\_%' ESCAPE '\';
optimizerextended_cursor_sharing_rel
optimizer extended cursor sharing for relational operators
allowlevel_without_connect_by
allow level without connect by
I am using client parameter file ( PFILE ) commented the hidden parameters highlighted above.
However after successful upgrade to 11gR2, creating SPFILE from the PFILE ( commented the hidden parameters) now i am getting 132 hidden parameters.
SQL> select count(1) from sys.V$PARAMETER where name like '\_%' escape '\';
COUNT(1)
132

usecolumn_stats_for_functionI just came across a similar case: 1 (just one) of our (RAC-) databases has 130-something underscore-parameters set to non-default values.
version is still 11.1.0.7 (e.g. not 11gR2).
All of those hidden parameters seem to be CBO related (list on request).
Weird is: Only one of our (very similar, supposedly same-config) databases have these hidden parameters set.
Colleagues justly wonder: Who, When, What has caused these parameters to be expliclty set for this one system?
Note: we do not have the complete history of this system documented (systems have been managed by 3 different parties already).
It is quite possible they came in with some patch or upgrade (catupgr?) somewhere between 11.1.0.1 and 11.1.0.7, but a confirmation would be nice.
Information welcome.

Need help in writing test cases while upgradin oracle from 10g to 11g
hi all
I want to write test cases for ugrading oracle 10g to 11g i have some idea but want your input.and at the same time some people taking upgrade testing as to ensure that everything works after the upgrade - stremas, jobs, procedures.but i think as 11g is backward compatible all the things should work properly.If not then how can we write a test cases for that,your help is most welcome.
Thanks in advanceHi;
Please see below notes which could give you some idea to create your test case. By the way if your components are certified wiht 11g so there should be any bad issue for your upgrade

Problem with statement after upgrading to 11g
Hello,
We recently upgraded to 11g from 9i and one of our statements we routinely use no longer works. The statement is:
delete from ALLEMPLOYEES x where exists( (select * from ALLEMPLOYEES where email_id=x.email_id) minus (select * from X_ALLEMPLOYEES where email_id=x.email_id));
This statement deletes no rows from the ALLEMPLOYEES table. When we run this statement as a check:
(select * from ALLEMPLOYEES) MINUS (select * from X_ALLEMPLOYEES);
We find many rows produced. Why would the delete fail now? We have colleagues still using 9i and use this same delete statement and it works for them with no trouble.Do you have proper indexes?

How to perform 10g RAC upgrade to 11g with Dataguard in place?
OS=LINUX
RDBMS=10.2.0.4
DG=PHYSICAL STANDBY
Below is my understanding
1)Install 11g CRS in NEW_CRS_HOME
2)Install 11g in NEW_ASM_HOME
3)Install 11g in NEW_RDBMS_HOME
4)Export the new NEW_ORACLE_HOME and start up the database with startup upgrade.
5) Run the catupgrade.sql script.
Are there any other steps involve?
In case I have to rollback then how to rollback CRS.Personally I would use DBUA instead of catupgrade.sql, but make sure you follow the upgrade documentation for pre-checks etc. You will also need to use netca to recreate the sqlnet listeners in the 11g homes and register with 11g CRS.
CRS is generally fairly quick to re-install and re-register databases, and this is cleaner than trying to restore OCR and VOTE disks etc. If you prefer to rollback be sure you backup the OCR and VOTE disks (e.g use dd), backup /etc/oracle, CRS_HOME, /etc/init* scripts etc.
The dataguard standby database should roll forward through the upgrade, but you will need to manually register the standby with 11gCRS. Make sure you have your DB and Log create_file_dest's set, as well as standby_file_management=auto. Personally I would manually recover the standby after the upgrade in case I need to use it to fallback.

HSODBC not working after upgrade to 11G
Hi,
I am having trouble with dblinks that worked under 10G but no longer work after upgrading to 11G. For this installation I am running Oracle on Windows 32 bit
and am using a Sybase ODBC driver to connect to a Sybase database.
I did catch the fact that hsodbc has been replaced by dg4odbc and have changed my listener configuration accordingly. However, when I try to use the dblinks I am receiving ORA-28500 errors "Incorrect syntax near 'FROM'"
Any idea on what the problem might be or how to troubleshoot?
Thanks!This kind of problem is commonly related to the QUOTED IDENTIFIER option within the ODBC driver
- Open ODBC Admin and step throug the config; you'll find an option:
EnableQuotedIdentifiers make sure this option is checked.
-Also make sure you have set in your init<dg4odbc>.ora file the parameter: HS_FDS_SUPPORT_STATISTICS=FALSE -
Oracle Discoverer 9i with 11g R2 Database
Hi everyone,
Currently our company is still using Oracle Discoverer 9i with Oracle 10g. It is working very fine without any problem. My question is, if we were to upgrade the Database from 10g to 11g R2, is it "technically" possible to continue using Oracle Discoverer 9i? We understands that Oracle Discoverer 9i is de-supported product but actually it is working fine with our current Database 10g.
If Oracle 11g R2 can be connected to Oracle Discoverer 9i, we would very much prefer to continue using Oracle Discoverer 9i even though it is de-supported.
Appreciate if someone can enlighten us.
Thanks and rgds,
ZackDear Srini,
Thank you very much for the advise. However, the problem here is my company will not upgrade to 11g if Discoverer 9i is not working. This is because they find so troublesome to re-create all the existing reports which is more than thousands of report...;-(.
Really appreciate the feedback from someone who has experience using oracle Discoverer 9i with 11gR2.
Thanks and rgds,

Does Oracle XE 10g or 11g have supported patches/bug fixes
Does Oracle XE 10g or 11g have supported patches/bug fixes?
XE isn't patch-able, unfortunately- eg. in the section ...Major Features Not Included at http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E17781_01/license.112/e18068/toc.htm#XELIC116 a "patch set" is one of the "not included" items
One could install one of the full release editions, get it patched, and upgrade an XE instance with the patch-able edition, but access to patches requires a support agreement.

Burning Student-made GarageBand music to CDs??
