Oracle BPM vs BPEL

Hi All,
I have some confusion between Oracle BPM vs BPEL. I have seen some posts regarding this but that was not clear to me.
Please clarify.
1) In What situation that we should use "Oracle BPM" rather than "Oracle BPEL PM" ?
2) In What situation that we should use "Oracle BPEL PM" rather than "Oracle BPM" ?
Thanks

In my opinion it’s not a “vs.”. Both the BPM and BPEL have strengths, they are often used together, and Oracle BPM and Oracle BPEL PM are synergistic.
Oracle BPEL PM is included with Oracle BPM Suite. We use Oracle BPEL processes on projects to orchestrate the services in a composite and we use Oracle BPM processes to model the business processes understood by executives, managers, subject matter experts, business analysts and developers. Using the same simple role based BPMN diagram in Oracle BPM, everyone understands what the business problem is and how the process will work solve the problem.
An activity in an Oracle BPM process can be used to invoke a Oracle BPEL process that in turn orchestrates the underlying IT components.

• Oracle BPM Suite : Oracle BPM vs Oracle BPEL PM

Hi All,
I am new in Oracle BPM and how some experience learning how to use Oracle BPM. Now when reading about the components products inside "Oracle BPM Suite" in detail , I am some what confuse about :
1) In What situation that we should use "Oracle BPM" rather than "Oracle BPEL PM" ?
2) In What situation that we should use "Oracle BPEL PM" rather than "Oracle BPM" ?
I am confuse about these issue since both of the products come together when we order "Oracle BPM Suite" and both of the products can be used for "HUman Workflow Applications" as well
Could you please help clarify these issues ? Thank you very much in advance.

Hi Pearapon,
You’ve raised a good point.
Every once in a while, I see an article written by a BPM pundit that attempts to make the case that the BPMN approach (Oracle BPM uses this) is superior to the BPEL approach or vice versa. Here's one example on InfoQ - http://www.infoq.com/articles/bpelbpm. Its title "Why BPEL is not the holy grail for BPM" is very misleading. This is a typical example of an author sitting in either the BPMN or BPEL camp criticizing the other camp's standard. In this article, the author attempts to indict all BPMN to BPEL conversion attempts based on the author's poorly drawn process.
Although I know that controversy boosts readership of these types of articles, in my opinion it’s not a “vs.”. Both the BPMN and BPEL standards have strengths when used with certain use cases.
Here’s one scenario where Oracle BPM and Oracle BPEL PM are synergistic. My background is with Oracle BPM, but I’ve used Oracle BPEL PM on a project for the orchestration of composite services. I used Oracle BPM to model the business processes understood by executives, managers, subject matter experts, business analysts and developers. Using the same simple role based activity flow process diagram, everyone understands what the business problem is and how the process will work solve the problem. The Oracle BPM Automatic activities in the process hit Oracle BPEL processes. Here we used the BPEL processes to hit and orchestrate the underlying IT components . We exposed the BPEL processes using the customer’s service bus and we invoked it from the Oracle BPM process’s Automatic activity (Oracle BPM -> OSB -> Oracle BPEL). Alternatively, If the customer had not had a service bus, I could have invoked the BPEL process directly from the Oracle BPM process via a cataloged web service in Oracle BPM.
Hope this helps,
Dan

• Diff Between Oracle BPM Studio and Oracle BPEL Process Manager

1)What is the difference between Oracle BPM Studio and Oracle BPEL Process Manager?
2)What is the connection between Oracle BPM Studio and Oracle BPEL Process Manager?

Hi,
As of today you should install SOA Suite 11g
Fr this you will need to install Database (for development you can use XE)
Run RCU utility to crete DB schemas for SOA Suite.
Install Weblogic server
Install SOA Suite as an option to Weblogic
Create SOA Domain.
It is physically possible to do it in 2GB but is far better on 3 - 4GB
You can consider installing DB on different machine.

• Oracle BPEL PM V/S Oracle BPM

Hi,
Can any one please help me out to understand the difference between the Oracle Bpel Process Manager and Oracle BPM.
I know wht she product does,but i want to understand in context of this both, i mean how this both can be used with each other.
Thanks in advance :)

In short BPM is used for business process orchastration. Human centric. It provides many out of the box functions like collabration, BPA sutdio which allows BA to develop processes.
Oracle BPEL is more for automated system integration. I is common that you would use both in a process, BPEL would do some complex system integration where BPM would be used to orchastrate the business process.

• Correlation Problem with Oracle BPM 2.1.2

I have developed a BPEL process that invokes Axis web services and then wait an asynchronous message from the services, using pick with onMessage tag. Previously, I do my work with Oracle BPM 2.0.10 and designer 0.9.5, it works well. But now, I have used Oracle BPEM 2.1.2 and designer 0.9.10, my Axis web services can not send any asynchronous message to the process. What's the problem? Must I set some configuration with BPM 2.1.2 or change my original BPEL code?
This is a fragement of my BPEL code.
<invoke name="invokeSubscriptionProxy" partnerLink="subcriptionProxy" operation="subscribeToProxy" inputVariable="input4SubscriptionProxy" outputVariable="output4SubscriptioProxy" portType="nsxml1:NotificationProxyPortType">
<correlations>
<correlation set="correlationInteger" initiate="no" pattern="out"/>
</correlations>
</invoke>
<pick name="pick4Subscribe2">

<empty name="empty-2"/>
</sequence>
</onAlarm>
</pick>
When I edit this code with designer 0.9.10, it shows no error. I test my process by viewing BPEL console.
Please help me to correct this problem.
PS. I sure that my Axis Web servies work well.

Hi,
"my Axis web services can not send any asynchronous message to the process" --> means when you try to invoke an Axis Web services from a BPEL process, there are no callback message from the web services, right? Did you see any exception from either the console or BPEL server DOS window?

• Oracle BPM Composer and no ADF

Hi Everyone,
We are planning to use Oracle BPM as our BPM engine. But our organization doesn't support ADF. So could anyone help to answer the below questions. Thanks a lot for your time.
1) Can we use Oracle BPM Composer... Does Oracle BPM composer require extended ADF Domain?
2) Default BPM workspace can't be used. So we need to build our own workspace. Are they any predefined framework to build a MVC or any other java framework to build workspace.
3)Could anyone let me know the additional things we should take care in case we don't use ADF domain.
Thanks everyone for your time.

Oracle BPM Studio (JDeveloper) is used by developers to create processes, human tasks, the process instance payloads, the composite services used by the processes, complex transformations, business rules and the ADF UIs.
Composer is a business user oriented web based tool used by business analysts with similar capabilities. Using Composer, business people can create and maintain processes, define process instance payloads, human tasks, process payloads, business rules. Instead of creating ADF UIs, you create and test web forms using a web based UI web form designer tool that it comes with in 11.1.1.7. Because the forms built using Composer can only be viewed from the Workspace or WebCenter Spaces tools, and because you're not going to use the Workspace or WebCenter Spaces tools, you won't be able to use Composer to create your UIs.
You might want to rethink your decision to not use the Workspace or WebCenter Spaces tools, but because you're not going to use either one you will instead be building your forms using the form design tool of your choice.
Although I'd advise you against recreating it, you'll need to become comfortable using the different APIs Oracle BPM exposes if you're going to try to duplicate the Workspace and WebCenter Spaces tool functionality.
Here's the API JavaDoc and a few blogs that will give you some tips on getting started:

• Oracle BPM 10gR3 to Oracle SOA 11g Suite

I am not sure some body else already asked.
I have Oracle BPM product in production which is fine and happy the way it works. Its developed from Version: 10.3.1.0.0 Build: #100364. We use custom JSP, JavaComponent, PAPI etc in this.
We are thinking of migrating to Oracle SOA 11g Suite.
Is there any tool for this? If not, anything expected?
Do we need to re-write our BPM 10g app to 11g? What all parts might need to re-write?

To answer to you question in a straight way I am afraid there is no direct migration path from OBPM 10g to Oracle SOA Suite 11g. You would need to we-write a lot of things like
1. As of now the BPM API's arent public. so u wont have something like PAPI as in OBPM
2. There is no support for PBL/Java in Oracle BPM 11g. However if you want to use custom Java Component u can leverage BPEL or Spring along with BPM. Every component is afterall packed inside a single composite.
3. It is advisable to have all dashboards and UI's developed with ADF if you are with Oracle SOA Suite 11g but even if you have JSPs that shouldnt be a problem.
This topic was discussed some days back in this forum. You can find the thread here

• "Oracle BPM Suite 11g" and "Oracle SOA Suite 11g" components

Dear Friends,
I am very confusing about the "Oracle BPM suite 11g" and "Oracle SOA Suite 11g" and would like your help on explanation as the following :
I have learn that In order to use "Oracle BPM Suite 11g" require to have "Oracle SOA Suite 11g" components to install first. Does it means that :
1) When we buy "Oracle BPM Suite 11g" , we automatically get the "Oracle SOA Suite 11g" components as well ?
2) IS it correct that these " these Oracle SOA Suite 11g components" are included :
(a) Oracle BAM
(b) Oracle Business Rules
(c) Oracle BPEL Manager
(d) Oracle Service Bus
(e) Oracle Complex Event Processing
3) Do we have a right to use all of these components listed in (2) ?
4) Then the answers in (3) is "YES", then Is it correct when the customer buy the "Oracle BPM Suite 11g" , they no need to buy "Oracle SOA 11g" any more when they would like to implements that applications based on SOA in the future (without using BPM) ?
5) What IF , the customer would like to start with "Oracle SOA Suite 11g" product and decide to buy only Oracle SOA Suite 11g first ; then later on in the future they would like to implement BPM projects in the future. Can you upgrade "Oracle SOA Suite 11g" to include "Oracle BPM Sutie 11g" and pay only the price different ?
I hope you can help providing the answers to these questions. THank you very much in advance.
Best Regards
Pearapon S.

This is a question best answered by your Oracle reseller or Oracle account manager to give you all the details but I hope this brief answer helps:
- The Unified Business Process Management Suite (BPM Suite 11g) includes: BPM Studio, BPM Composer, BPMN Service Engine and Workflow Extensions, BPM Process Spaces, and BPM Process Analytics.
- BPM Suite 11g requires the licensing of SOA Suite 11g for Oracle Middleware which requires a license for WebLogic Suite.
- You can license SOA Suite 11g now and license BPM Suite 11g later.
Since the products are layered, I don't see this cutting into SOA sales at all. My personal view is that BPM on top of SOA is brilliant since it provides easy integration between human and automated tasks, builds on many of the SOA concepts that are key for a successful BPM implementation (functional, not the Oracle product), and uses the same IDE. The synergies extend past easy use of services; the same business rules and human workflow components are used between both products.

• Getting error in oracle bpm worklist.,while clicking new HW task..

I am getting the above error when selecting the new task in oracle bpm worklist.I am not able use my Human work flow.
so any one can help me,
waiting for the reply...

Hi
1. I am guessing you got this application/project from some other team member or from source code control system.
2. Basically looks like some tag libs are not getting resolved and hence this tag <wlc:taskHistory is not understood as a tag. Hence the syntax error.
3. In JDeveloper, select your TaskFormsUIProject that has this taskDetails1.jspx file. Right Click -> Project Properties.
4. In Project Properties window, on left side, select JSP Tag Libraries. On right side, I am betting you should see some entries in Red Color like "Worklist Component 1.0". Select this and on right side, see the location in the first field named TLD File: which is something like shown below. Now most probably this folder structure do not match with where you have JDeveloper in your machine. You need to fix this. First copy this value, so that you know where the JAR file is located.
C:/Oracle/Middleware/Jdeveloper115/jdeveloper/soa/modules/oracle.soa.worklist_11.1.1/adflibWorklistComponents.jar!/META-INF/worklistComponents.tld
5. Delete this entry. Click on Add button. In the pop up window, select like Project -> click on New button. Now browse and select the .jar file from your JDeveloper installed folder like for ex: C:/Oracle/Middleware/Jdeveloper115/jdeveloper/soa/modules/oracle.soa.worklist_11.1.1/adflibWorklistComponents.jar and hit OK Button. Now you should see a new entry added in Tag Libraries named "Worklist Component 1.0". Hit Ok. Save the Project. Compile once.
6. Redeploy your application/project the way you do. Test it.
Repeat the steps for any Tag Libraries that you see in Red Color. Note down the location first of the JAR file that has the .tld. Then remove it. Add a new entry and select this .JAR from your local JDev folder structure.
Thanks

Hi,
I have two questions to ask:
1.Is BEA Aqua Logic BPM Suite now a part of Oracle BPM Suite or it still exists on its own as a separate entity.
2.I have requirement to integrate BEA Aqua logic(Oracle) BPM Suite with Alfresco to develop advance workflows created using BPM Suite on Alfresco.I have searched on web but not found anything much relevant.Can anybody help me out on how to do it?Is it possible or not?If yes,any link or documentation for the same would be highly appreciated.If no,please confirm the same also.
Thank You,
Regards,
J Lalit

thanks so much, it's of great help.
however, if i want to download the install file of the whole Oracle Business Process Management Suite, which files are required?
as i know, the whole OBPM Suite includes 5 products:
BEA AquaLogic BPM Studio/Server
Oracle BPEL Process Manager
Oracle Business Rules
Oracle Business Activity Monitoring
Oracle Process Portal
i checked
http://edelivery.oracle.com/EPD/Download/get_form?egroup_aru_number=9132671
http://www.oracle.com/technology/software/products/ias/bea_main.html
seems these products are listed seperately. and each product also includes many parts. i don't know which parts should download. especially we're going to intall on Linux 86.
thanks.

• Invoking ALBPM (Oracle BPM) using Webservice calls

Hi,
I am trying to invoke Oracle BPM processes using webservice dynamically using events. I am presently not able to find any samples in this regard. Could somebody help me figure out a way to invoke Oracle BPM process dynamically using events ?
I would like to avoid the use of polling as an option.
TIA,

I too have this question. It seems like you can no longer use BPEL with BPM 6.5/10GR3. Is this in fact the case? To use BPEL do you have to revert back to version 6.0?

• Oracle BPM Worklist

hi,

Hi,
You can have a full SOA Suite license with BPM suite within it. That includes:
BPEL Process Manager
Human Workflow
Business Rules
Business Activity Monitoring
Business Process Management
Mediator
B2B
Oracle Event Processing
Web Services Manager
User Messaging Service
Enterprise Manager Fusion Middleware Control
You can have a BPM Suite license only. That includes:
BPMN Processes
Human Workflow
Business Rules
Business Activity Monitoring
And you can have a SOA Suite license without BPM suite within.
The BPM suite exist in the SOA suite installation. The licenses can be changed depending which component you are choosing during the installation.

• Deploying a large Oracle BPM Application with multiple UI projects

Hi everyone
I'm working on a large application with Oracle BPM 11.1.1.5.0.
I'm using JDeveoper 11.1.1.5.0 to build the application.
The application has lots of user tasks with lots of UI projects (one for each user task).
My problem is, each time I make a small change in the project, I have to deploy the whole thing, which includes one main project and five or six UI projects (for now) for the user tasks.
As the application gets bigger I'm sure this will definitely become an issue.
So my question is if I'm doing this the right way? or should there be a more efficient way?
Thanks in advance

Hi Luke
1. Generally, there is NO need to have One UI Project for one individual Task. Say you have like 10 Tasks (.task files) like Initiator, Approver, Reviewer, LegalApprover etc etc. You can have just One UI TaskForms Project and have taskDetails.jspx generated for each one of these Tasks. This is the preferred way.
2. Any Workflow Application should have just 2 deployers. Means one deploy is for actual Workflow stuff that will have the main BPEL or BPM Process, human Tasks etc etc. Basically all that goes into workflow project. And another deployer is the REST of the things means the TaskForms UI Project and any other supporting projects like EJB projects, utils projects, any WebServices projects (if you have WebServices). All these will be deployed as one SINGLE EAR.
Lets take an Example from JDeveloper IDE point of view.
1. Application Name: SalesOrderApp
2. Workflow Project Name: SalesProcess (This is a a jdeveloper project of type BPM Project or SOA Project and has all human tasks, bpels, bpm process, business rules etc etc).
3. UI Project: SalesTaskForms (This is a auto generated form for the very first Task that you choose. Then for rest of the Tasks use this same Project, to generate jspx for all other .TASK files. REFER online docs on how to do this. I will see if I can compile this list of urls for you).
3. Supporting EJB Projects: MyEJBProject1 (Some EJB Project that connects to some backend database specific to your project)
4. Supporting another EJB Service Project: MyExtServiceProject1 (Like another EJB Project, that pulls data from some external source)
5. Some WebService Project: SalesCreditCardValidationWebService (Some WebService Project to be deployed as .WAR file that does some service).
Try to apply SOA Concepts for each Service that your application needs. Instead of putting all the EJBs and everying in one single giant project, try to split them logically/business need wise and geenrate separate projects so that they can service as it is to other projects and other apps.
Anyhow, coming back, in above Example, you should have jsut 2 Deployement: 1 is Workflow SCA JAR File and other is full EAR file.
a) For the Workflow Project, right click and generate a Deployment profile to deploy just this workflow and NOT any other UI Projects.
b) For each individual project genereate a deployment profile like MyEJBProj1, MyEJBProj2, MyWebService1 etc etc.
c) For TaskForms project also, generate a deployment profile like SalesTaskForms. This will be a WAR file.
d) At Application Level, create a new Deployment profile of type EAR and now assemble all the projects under this EAR except for the Workflow project.
First you deploy Workflow SCA JAR file. You need to redeploy this again only when you make changes to workflow, humantasks etc etc.
Deploy full blown EAR file that has all the stuff (EJB JARs, TaskForm WARs, WebService WARs etc).
Anytime you change taskforms, or any java or ejb code, ReDeploy EAR file.
You should have one JAR and one EAR to deploy at the end of the day. Infact this is how it should go into UAT and Production. They should not have multiple JARs, multiple WARs to deploy. The reason we have separate Workflow SCA Jar file is, bcos workflow will not change frequenly. And also older versions of SOA/BPM (before 11.5 FP) have a huge disadvantage. Everytime we deploy workflow project, it will make all existing process STALE unless you deploy with a diff version. This is not an issue any more for 11.5 + FP (Feature Pack applied). Hence be careful when you redeploy workflow project.
Thanks
