Oracle data source and Sun App Server 8

Hi -- This could be more of a JNDI question than a JDBC question... Please let me know if I have posted to the wrong place.
I downloaded Sun Application Server version 8 and installed it on a windows 2000 pc. The install went fine, as did the build and deploy of the jdbc-simple .ear file. I can run jdbc-simple with no problems.
Now, through the App Server Admin Interface, I have added a new connection pool utilizing Oracle's OCI driver and I can successfully ping the database from App Server. I created a JDBC Resource that uses the Oracle pool and gave it the JNDI Name "jdbc/oracle-dev ". At this point, I am stuck. I want to use "jdbc-simple" to connect to my new JDBC Resource instead of the pointbase resource.
Could someone please help me make the necessary modifications to jdbc-simple so that is uses the new "jdbc/oracle-dev " JDBC Resource I created rather than the pointbase connection that was supplied by default during install?
Thanks for any help,
Jason Earnhardt

That helpes quite a bit. I still can't get the app to retrieve data, but I am getting a more useful message in the log:
[Error in allocating a connection. Cause: Connection could not be allocated because: ORA-01017: invalid username/password; logon denied]
As you suggested, I removed the <default-resource-principal> stuff from sun-web.xml and modified it to match your example. Additionally, I changed the <res-ref-name> in web.xml from "jdbc/jdbc-simple" to "jdbc/oracle-dev".
The Connection Pool "Ping" from the Admin Console is successful with the user and password I have set in the parameters. (it fails if I change them, so I am pretty sure that is set up correctly) Is there another place I should check for user/pass information? Do I need to do anything to the samples/database.properties file?
By the way, this is the 4th quarter 2004 release of app server. Would it be beneficial to move to the Q1 2005 beta?
Many thanks for your help so far...

    Hi jeffoliver1000,
According to your description, you are using Enterprise Core edition and you are prompted that you can’t use remote data sources.
In your scenario, we neither ignore your point nor be doubt with what you say. But actually we have met the case before that even though the SQL Server engine is Enterprise but the reporting services is still standard. So I would recommend you to find the
actual edition of reporting services you are using. You can find Reporting Services starting SKU in the Reporting Service logs ( default location: C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\<instance name>\Reporting Services\LogFiles). For more information,

  • Different behavior using JSC and Sun App server 8.2 - why?

I have developed a JSF application using Java Studio Creator 2.
JSC2 uses Sun App Server 8.2 as the development application server.
I also have Sun App Server 8.2 on a server that is used for deployment.
When I run an application within the IDE, I get a set of behavior that I expect to see, but not when deployewd to the server.
In particular, in one case, a grid created within a session bean is redrawn when running in the IDE but not when deployed.
In another case, I attempt to read the value of the grid text field.
In the IDE, I get a properly set 'submittedValue' property, but in the deployed environment, it is null.
Why am I seeing differences in behavior between the two environments?
How can I get the deployed version to work tge same as in the development enviroment.

With SQL Express, Data source should be local SQL DB.
With SQL Enterprise, Standard, BI edition, you can create Data soruce which are hosted on other servers.

I had all my ejb code running nicely on sun one server 7. Now I have to port to 8 and while the same ear file deploys successfully, I'm unable to make any create calls on my CMP beans. I get server side error "argument type mismatch", but I've checked and rechecked all arguments, number and type, but can't find anything wrong. Any pointers?

The new one is supposed to be backward comptible. In any case, I've run the migration tool and redeployed, but same issues exist.

  • Maintaining the structure of a SQL Server staging area and dwh aligned with the Oracle data source

    Hi,
I'm working in a context where the data source system, in Oracle, is a continuos work in progress. Each 1-2-3 weeks the data source system in the prod environment is updated with new tables or updated table (with new columns or altered columns). So, it is
important to apply in a rapid manner the related changes in the data structure of the SQL Server staging area and dwh.
    The issues to solve are:
    a. maintaining SQL Server data structure of the staging area aligned with the data structure of the Oracle data source;
    b. maintaing SQL Server data structure of the staging area aligned with the data structure of the SQL Server staging area.
In order to solve these issues it could be useful to think to an authomatic manner to alert when a data structure change occurs and a simple manner to apply the changes on SQL Server data structure.
    Any suggests, please? Many thanks

We use Oracle CDC service in SQLServer. It has a flag to indicate the schema changes happening at the Oracle end. We track the schema changes using it and then apply changes to sqlserver side. And regarding automation you can use Biml as suggested or .NET

    Hi Sonal,
To use PowerPivot for SharePoint on SharePoint 2013, it is required to install PowerPivot for SharePoint with the Slipstream version of SQL Server 2012 SP1. If you install SQL Server 2012 and then use the upgrade version of SQL Server 2012 SP1 to upgrade,
the environment will not support SharePoint 2013.

  • Performance issue with Oracle data source

    Hi all,
I've a rather strange problem that I'm stuck on need some assistance on.
I have a rules file which drags data in via an SQL data source thats an Oracle server. If I cut/paste the 3 sections of "select" "from" and "where" into SQL-Developer and run the query, it takes less than 1 second to complete. When I run the "load data" with this rule file or even use the "Retrieve" with the rules file edit, it takes up to an hour to complete/retrieve the data.
The table in question being used has millions of rows and I'm using one of the indexed fields to retrieve the data. It's as if the Essbase/Rule file is ognoring the index, or I have a config issue with the ODBC settings on the server that is causing the problem.

One other thing that I've seen is that if your Oracle data source and Essbase server are in different geographic locations, you can get some delay when it retrieves data over the WAN. I guess there is some handshaking going on when passing the data from Oracle to Essbase (either by record or groups of records) that is slowed WAY down over the WAN.
Our solution to this was remove teh query out of the load rule, run it via SQL+ on a command line at the geographic location where the Oracle database is, then ftp the resulting file to where the Essbase server is.
With upwards of 6 million records being retrieved, it took around 4 hours in the load rule, but running the query via command line took 10 minutes, then the ftp took less than 5.

  • Oracle Data Source Question

Can anyone tell me if the communication between a ColdFusion oracle data source and the Oracle database itself is encrypted or clear text by default?  I'm assuming it is clear text unless other features, such as Oracle Advanced Security, have been implemented.
If it is data transmission is clear text, are the data source user name and password passed in clear text as well?

I dunno about the authentication info, but I'd say the rest of it would be clear text.
It might pay to have a look at the JDBC spec, or the docs for the driver you're using.  That'll have the relevant info.

  • Unable to Register Sun App Server 9 in Netbeans 5.5

    Hi,
I used to work on netbeans 5.5 and bundled sun app server 9. Everything was going fine. Today in the middle of a deployment in app server through netbeans, my system got hanged. So I killed the java.exe process.
Now when I again attempted to open netbeans it showed me an error that some modules in sun app server could not be found and so sun app server could not be loaded. I tried registering sun app server again in netbeans but the server name was not even coming in the drop down list of app servers.
Impatiently I uninstalled the bundled app server + netbeans through the uninstaller, and again installed the server and netbeans in a different directory. But again the same problem is coming and it is not showing the sun app server. Netbeans is opening and Sun App Server 9 is also working in isolated mode but I cant seem to find the sun app server still in the server list of netbeans.
Kindly help. I am just too frustrated.

    Hi,
I have installed J2EE 5 SDK on windows XP. When I installed NetBeans 5.5.1 and tried to register it with Application Server, it got registered automatically. I had to uninstall both due to some reasons, now when I installed both j2ee and netbeans again, i see D:/Sun/AppServer folder empty and not able to register NetBeans 5.5.1 with application server. I tried again and again by reintalling but AppServer folder remains empty and not able to register. Any help for this issue??????????

  • C++ Application and Oracle Data Source

    Hi everyone,
I am a bit of a newbie in this domain so am a bit confused with some of the options I have for my task. My task is to have a C++ application which will write/read/update data to/from an Oracle database. What are my options in this case?
I have read about OCI and OCCI, about ODBC drivers etc. but how does it fit in. If I use OCI or OCCI, do I need an ODBC driver (since from what I have seen, these aren't available for free and free is also one of the requirements)? If not, what do I need to be able to use OCI or OCCI?
If I am wrong and there are free ODBC drivers for Linux, where can I find them?
Or does this whole question sound like garbage? :(
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi,
This is my experience, if you know for sure that your application is going to execute always against a Oracle Data source, perhaps you shouldn't use ODBC and you should go for OCCI. This should be a good starting point:
    http://www.orafaq.com/faq/oci
And here is another question, how can I set up a development environment to compile a C++ application (written using ODBC) on a Solaris server? I need the headers and the library against which I have to link the application. My Oracle database is 9.2.0.4.0.
Any help will be appreciated. Thanks!

Hi friends, thank for various suggestions. pls i'm having problem with Sun App Server 8.1 and 8.2. I installed Portal 7 on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3 and also Sun Portal 6 on Suse Linux 9. The problem is that App server keep giving Login exception after using them for a while. The details is given below:
after typing ./asadmin start-domain --user admin domain1. Instead of it to give me the password prompt, it threw the following exception:

Login Failed javax.security. auth.login.LoginException: Failed file for login admin
CL1156 could not start the domain domain1.
I always login to the O/S as root.
Any suggestion will be highly appreciated. Thanks

Thanks very much kedar.mhaswade for your suggestions.
I do not have a regular access to the Internet, I
would have gotten back earlier than this, so i'm
sorry. Anyway, i checked the content of
~/.asadminprefs and the password is not the same with
the one i'm using. I found the default password
supplied by Sun but I don't think this could be the
problem. I'm actually using the App server that is
bundled with Sun Portal 6 and 7 and so i supplied my
own password during installation and i've logged in
several times after installation. It just failed in
one of those logins and had stopped working since. I
always encountered the same problem either when using
Sun Portal 7 or 6 on Red Hat ES 3 and Suse 9
    respectively.
I'm posting the content of admin-keyfile as you

So i will so much appreciate your help and i wouldn't
mind if you could send me your phone number. Thanks.Hi tolulike,
Even if you supplied your own password, we have this developer friendly
feature that has side effects that are at times hard to diagnose. Can you
    please
    - rename the .asadminprefs file and make sure that there is no .asadminprefs file in your home directory?
    - attempt to start the domain.
You should be prompted for the password.
The idea is that when you've got that file and that entry AS_ADMIN_PASSWORD in your home directory, asadmin will read it
from there and you land in this (unfortunate) situation.
Obviously doing this might have some side effects with other domains. This
is because for all domains, asadmin reads this file as a last resort. So,
it might so happen that this file is actually required for functioning of your
    other domains.
But now you know when this file is used, so there is no mystery (hopefully).
Let me know if this works.
    Thank you.
    Kedar

  • Running Sun App Server 7 and 8 on the same box

    Hello,
Are there any known issues with running Sun App Server 7 and 8 in the same host box ? Currently I am encountering some class not found exceptions with Sun App Server 8 . Sun App Server 7 runs just fine.
    Thanks,
    Aswin.

It's not advisable to run separate installations of
ColdFusion 7 and ColdFusion 8 single server on the same machine the
re are several services that will try to use the same ports.
However, you can install ColdFusion Enterprise using the
multi-server configuration and then deploy the J2EE versions of
ColdFusion to JRun. You can change the JVM that each instance uses
(we recommend the latest 1.4 for CF7 and the latest 1.6 for CF8),
    and everything should run fine.
ColdFusion itself is essentially just a J2EE application, the
J2EE server itself is JRun 4. So the specific answer to your
question is "don't install 2 copies of JRun 4 to the same machine".
But yes, it's 100% possible, I'm running this configuration in my
    own development environment.
