Oracle DB extent based striping

Dear All,
We have Oracle 10g (ECC 6.0 - unicode) systems installed on HP UX. The usage of the sapdata folders are as follows:
/oracle/RD1/sapdata4        80%
/oracle/RD1/sapdata3        48%
/oracle/RD1/sapdata2        83%
/oracle/RD1/sapdata1        45%
Our data centre team (storage) is telling to migrate this database and implement "DB Extent based Striping" under only sapdata1 & sapdata2.
As per them, if we implement this and if any tablespace has got more than one data file (usally happens for SAP installation), Oracle will automatically allocate extents to all the data files simultaneously whenever it writes and that will ensure the equal utilization of storage space under all sapdata mount points.
I am very much unclear about this.
Any idea how to implement the same? Is there any documentation available?
Please advice.
Thanks & Regards
Sudip

Hi Sudip,
it's correct hat whenever a tablespace has more than one datafile Oracle will allocate extents in a round-robin fashion.
You get that for free - nothing to change here.
However, this will not equalize I/O traffic concerning the sapdataX-folders.
The idea to migrate to LMTS and ASSM is also quite a good one, but these are technologies that make storage easier to handle.
The storage is not going to be necessarily faster by that.
(Ok - LMTS brings performance enhancements during (de-)allocation of extents - but this is not the major concern here).
So for the goals of your storage people:
>01) Even usage of sapdata folders.
>02) Avoid I/O contention in one datafile (as per them, one extent will be automatically extended to all data files so to achieve read parallelization and increase database throughput.
I propose to move the datafiles so, that the I/O traffic is evenly distributed over the I/O Channels/LUNs ... whatever you have there...
This is done by just moving the files around.
Concerning the comment  to 02... this is plain wrong. One extent will always just be stored into one datafile. Always.
BTW: Changing these things is usually quite time intensive and can rarely be done online. Have you got any measurements that actually indicate that your I/O troughput is bad due to I/O contention?

  • Speed Oracle forms (web based) versus client server

    2 years ago we've tested forms 9i
    Everything went very smoothly:
    We had no problems in converting our old forms to 9i.
    We've installed a new database on a new server and we've installed a application server on a second server (Both servers had 2 CPU's and 2GB of memory).
    In short everything worked perfectly ... except the speed.
    Oracle forms (web based) are a lot slower than client-server forms on a LAN, so we kept developing client-server.
    We just use forms on our own local network (100Mbit) but
    we use a lot of triggers in our forms (perhaps the reason for the poor performance?)
    Has anything changed?
    Is it now possible to use web based forms, that are at leased as fast as client server forms?

    OK, I agree: changing the form (more views, less post-query, more pl/sql on database) will improve performance.
    But then I have to recreate every form (> 1000), so then converting c/s to web is not just recompile.
    We don't use images in our forms, the database is connected to the application server with a gigabit line. We did tests when even the client was on gigabit, but c/s remains faster. We did the test with just 1 client. and we have never experienced a bottleneck on the network using c/s (even with post-query on millions of records)
    So 1 database (2 Xeon CPU's 2GB RAM), 1 App server (2 XEON CPU's, 2GB RAM) and 1 client (XEON workstation, 512MB RAM) using web forms on a gigabit network is slower than the same client using forms (c/s) without an appl. server. => A lot more hardware for less performance?
    In short my question: is the latest version of forms faster than the previous version?
    Can webforms have the same performance as client server?

  • Which is better to install Oracle 11g database based on ASM or Filesystem

    We will install 2 sets of Oracle 11.2.0.3 on Redhat Linix 5.6 and configure Data Guard for them further -- one will be a primary DB server, the other will be a physical standby DB server. The Oracle DB stoage is based on SAN Array Disk with 6TB size. Now there are two options to manage the DB datafiles:
    1. Install Oracle ASM
    2. Create the tranditional OS filesystem
    Which is better? in the past, our 10g data guard environment is not based on Oracle ASM.
    Someone think if we adopt the oracle ASM, the shortcomings are :
    1. as there is one more instance that will consume more memory and resource.
    2. as the ASM file system cannot be shown out on the OS level directly such as "df" command, the disk utilization monitor job will be more difficult. at least it cannot be supervised at OS level.
    3. as the DB bshoule be done the daily incremental backup (Mon-Sat) to Local Backup Drive. the bakup job must be done by RMAN rather than user-managed script.
    Who can provide some advices? Thanks very much in advance.

    Which is better? in the past, our 10g data guard environment is not based on Oracle ASM. ASM provides a host of new features ito data management, and performance - to the extent that you can rip out the entire existing storage system, replace it with a brand new storage system, without a single second of database downtime.
    Someone think if we adopt the oracle ASM, the shortcomings are :
    1. as there is one more instance that will consume more memory and resource. Not really relevant on 64bit h/w architecture that removes limitations such a 4GB of addressable memory. On the CPU side... heck, my game PC at home has a 8 core 64bit CPU. Single die and dual core CPUs belong to the distant past.
    Arguing that an ASM instance has overheads would be silly. And totally ignores the wide range of real and tangible benefits that ASM provides.
    2. as the ASM file system cannot be shown out on the OS level directly such as "df" command, the disk utilization monitor job will be more difficult. at least it cannot be supervised at OS level. That is a A Very Good Thing (tm). Managing database storage from o/s level is flawed in many ways.
    3. as the DB bshoule be done the daily incremental backup (Mon-Sat) to Local Backup Drive. the bakup job must be done by RMAN rather than user-managed script.
    rman supports ASM fully.
    I have stopped using cooked file systems for Oracle - I prefer ASM first and foremost. The only exceptions are tiny servers with a single root disk that needs to be used for kernel, database s/w, and database datafiles. (currently these are mostly Oracle XE systems in my case, and configured that way as XE does not support ASM and is used as a pure cost decision).

    Any idea regarding Oracle 8i/9i software on Intel based Solaris.
    Can I use Oracle 8i Sparc Software for Intel based Solaris?
    Thanks

    HI Kandi,
    Apparently due to a lack of demand, Oracle software on Solaris Intel is being phased out. Unfortunately, you can't use Solaris Sparc releases on Intel platforms.

  • Oracle 8i Function-based index

    Hi,
    i have problem with making Oracle8i to use function-based index. I am using version 8.1.6 Enterprise Edition.
    So here is the test I did
    CREATE INDEX first_name_index ON customer ( UPPER(first_name)) ;
    alter session set QUERY_REWRITE_ENABLED = TRUE;
    alter session set QUERY_REWRITE_INTEGRITY=TRUSTED;
    ANALYZE TABLE customer COMPUTE STATISTICS;
    alter index first_name_index compute statistics;
    Everything seemed to be as required by Oracle but it doesn't use this function-based index when I make
    select *
    from customer
    where upper(first_name) like 'J%';
    I test it on large table and with table with few hundred rows. I don't have NULLs in that field.
    Can anyone help me with this.

    I would not create an index to have it prepared for an ORDER BY. An index is quite costly in DML opperations and space as well. More, a function based index will be costlier as the function has to be called for every read and/or write.
    Do not forget that indexes a created for a direct access to data and not for sorting purposes.

  • Partitioning on Oracle 8i (Rule Based vs. Cost Based)

    At my current engagement, we are using Oracle Financials 11.0.3 on Oracle 8.0.6. The application uses rule-based optimizer. The client wants to implement Oracle partitioning. With this in mind, we are concerned about possible performance issues that the implementation of partitioning may cause since RBO does not recognize it.
    We agree that the RBO will see a non-partitioned table the same as a partitioned. In this scenario where you gain the most is with backup/recoverability and general maintenance of the partitioned table.
    Nevertheless, we have a few questions:
    When implementing partitions, will the optimizer choose to go with Cost base vs. Rule base for these partitioned tables?
    Is it possible that the optimizer might get confused with this?
    Could it degrade performance at the SQL level?
    If this change from RBO to CBO does occur, the application could potential perform poorly because of the way it has been written.
    Please provide any feedback.
    Thanks in advance.

    If the CBO is invoked when accessing these tables, you may run into problems.
    - You'll have to analyze your tables & ensure that the statistics are kept up to date.
    - It's possible that any SQL statements which invoke the CBO rather than the RBO will have different performance characteristics. The SYSTEM data dictionary tables, for example, must use the RBO or their performance suffers dramatically. Most of the time, the CBO beats the RBO, but applications which have been heavily tuned with the RBO may have problems with the CBO.
    - Check your init.ora to see what optimizer mode you're in. If you're set to CHOOSE, the CBO will be invoked whenever statistics are available on the table(s) involved. If you choose RULE, you'll only invoke the CBO when the RBO encounters situations it doesn't have rules for.

  • OBIEE and Oracle OLAP Value Based Hierarchies

    Hi there...
    I have a value based dimension built on Oracle OLAP and want to map it on OBIEE Administration tool.
    I've been using the above link as reference:
    http://www.oracle.com/technology/obe/olap_biee/CreateBIEEMetadata.htm
    There's no option to import from Oracle Multi-dimensional Database. Either to import/configure the view created by OLAP as an Unballanced or Ragged Dimension.
    I also checked this example, but it uses ESSBASE as the multi-dimensional source....
    http://www.rittmanmead.com/2008/08/27/ragged-hierarchy-handling-in-obiee/
    How to map this Ragged Dimension created in OLAP workspace in OBIEE? Any suggestions or directions will be highly appreciated...
    Thanks in advance
    Marcos

    Mark and others,
    You can create OLAP_TABLE views with level columns on top of value-based hierarchies. BI Beans used to do that too behind the scenes in Discoverer Plus OLAP. If you trace the Discoverer session, where you are querying data from Value-based hierarchies, you will see that it also generates OLAP_TABLE views with level columns in it.
    So the question is how to do it. Internally, even for Value-based hierarchies Oracle OLAP keeps track of the "depth" of each value by using a structure called GID_DIMENSION (i.e., Grouping Dimension). Here is an example of a view on top of a value-based hierarchy (CFC_ACCT_GAPP) for RPT_ACCOUNT dimension. You have to know how "deep" your value-based hierarchy is.
    Similar kind of a thing is done by OLAP View Generator application, which I never use - since I always prefer to define my own OLAP_TABLE views.
    This kind of a view can then be used in the RPD of OBIEE.

  • Oracle 11g function based columns - deterministic function or not?

    Hi all, here is my situation:
    I added function based column in my table and created index on this column.
    I need this since in my ADF application, I need to be able to sort by this column.
    The function (that this column is based on) I had to make it DETERMINISTIC (otherwise it can not be done).
    So far so good.
    My function is accepting 3 parameters (all NUMBERs) which are practically 3 primary keys from 3 different tables. Based on which key is present, my function is returning "Code" - column (VARCHAR2) from any of those 3 tables. And for sure "Code" can change in any of those table.
    So my function is not really a DETERMINISTIC function.
    -Should I update the function and make it nondeterministic? Will it still work? Will the index be valid if the function is nondeterministic?
    -What is the consequence if it is not deterministic?
    -If I leave i as deterministic - somehow the result is cached. Will my function always going to be re-executed for each row (having on mind it is not really deterministic)?
    -Is there better solution than (function based column and index on it) in my case?
    Thanks, Vesna

  • How to access Oracle Using Dos Based FoxPro(2.5,2.6)

    Hello Sir,
    I need some clarification regarding the following question.
    Q. How can access Oracle Database using Dos Based Foxpro of version either 2.5 or 2.6
    Thanking you,
    Kishore.P

    Hi Alex,
    the host and port depends on your network setup of your VM.
    Do an ifconfig -a and see what IP adress your guest has.
    With this IP address you should be able to access EM from outside your VM (but on the VM host, not from outside the network) with the same port.

    How can change the cost based setting to rule based in oracle 9i? Could anybody help me?

    ALTER SYSTEM SET OPTIMIZER_MODE=RULE SCOPE=BOTH;
    Won't work, you'll have to change your parameter file and then restart the DB to change optimizer mode at instance level.
    For a session you can change it using the command
    ALTER SESSION SET OPTIMIZER_MODE=RULE;

    Hi,
    though this is not security related: You can use JavaBeans within a Bean Container in Oracle Forms. This allows you to add any Java you like to the Forms front end. However, you may have to dig a bit into the Forms client for this.

  • Oracle 10g OCI based application talking to an Oracle 9i database

    Hi all,
    Got a question. I have an OCI C++ application that is written using the Oracle 10g OCI includes, etc ... This of course is running on a 10g client. The client OS is actually a Windows x64 system since 10g is the only native OCI client right now for 64 bit Windows systems. So this all works fine. Now, I am communicating with an Oracle 9i database server. Is there anything wrong or invalid about this configuration ? I didn't think that there was but I was asked to confirm this, that is having an Oracle 10g client communicating with an Oracle 9i database. Our application is making very straight forward OCI calls, and we are not using any of the newer OCI calls that were introduced in 10g, just the ones that are available in 9i OCI.
    Thanks in advance,
    Nick

    Thanks for the reply.
    Actually I thought that the OCCI forum was for Object oriented OCI, so while I'm using C++, I'm not using the object oriented side of OCI, just using the normal OCI calls. Guess I should have been a little clearer in my original post.
    But my main question really concerned the version of the client and the version of the database which you answered.
    Thanks,
    Nick

    In oracle HR, with multiple assignments and multiple GRE. How can we restrict to having 1 assignment per GRE. I do not want more than 1 assignments per GRE. Has anyone done this before?

    Hi,
    If the requirement is to prevent the creation of multiple assignments, you can achieve that by personalizing the assignment form.

    Hi,
    you'll have to create a Java Bean in Forms that calls the runtime. You can also use webutil, available on otn to call a client side host command.
