Oracle DB prerequisites for installing OWB?

Hi,
I am planning to install OWB for a prototype project for a client.
But I wanted to make sure that whatever I do now can be repeated at the time of the actual project too. For other things, I see no problem, but installation remains one.
I need to install Oracle 10g first and then OWB in case of the prototype. But later I will find Oracle DB already in place and just OWB has to be installed.
Is someone aware of the steps required to set up Oracle DB if it has to support OWB later on. Can someone please suggest me the proper way to set up Oracle DB first and then OWB?
I am concerned because in the I have seen OWB installations failing when they were done at an existing Oracle DB setup. (may be some Init parameters were required to be set before OWB is installed)
Also, is anyone aware of some typical problems that we face while working on Red Hat linux?
thanks
Goga

Hi Ron,
Good questions..You have a number of options here and it depends how you want to manage your repository in terms of different environments (dev, test, training etc). In terms of users I would recommend creating a repository owner (in effect the DBA of the repository) and then create additional users for each person in your team. These other users can then connect to the repository and create new projects, design objects and deploy objects as required. By creating new users you can create a security layer within the system to prevent certain team members from deploying objects to specific database instances.
There are a number of options for managing versioning within OWB. There is a demo viewlet on the OWB website that explains the basic concepts, although it relates to OWB 10gR1.
http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/warehouse/htdocs/OTN_viewlet.html
Version management in OWB
With OWB 10gR2 a few things have changed. However, the simplest configuration is to have one design repository and multiple target instances, each with their own OWB repository installation. For the Target schemas, the installation of the OWB repository is used simply to run the control centre as this is required to manage and record the deployment of objects into the various target schemas. You can then create different configurations in your design repository to control the different characteristics of each target instance (use of tablespaces, enabling/disabling parallel features etc).
The flaw with this simple approach is that you have no version control within the design repository. If you make changes to the design repository objects after you have deployed them to a specific schema there is no ability to recreate the target schema if something happens because the design repository has been updated. Therefore, depending on how you want to manage you target schemas in relation to the design repository you may want to create multiple design repositories to support each target schema (dev, test, qa, training, prod etc). Then to update a schema you would export your project from the design repository and import it into the target repository and then deploy the new design to the required schema. This type of approach does provide additional levels security allowing you greater control over access to each target schema.
I thought there was some documentation being developed by the product management team but I have not seen it yet. I hope this helps, if not ping me again.

    Hi
I need the prerequisites for installing OBIEE 10g in AIX.

Scripts? Oracle installation has intuitive GUI installation. You just need to do some required action before launch of installation. These steps you can find on official documentation http://tahiti.oracle.com or some public papers.
Anyway there was installation script that prepared the system for Oracle install. It was called DORIS (made by Howard J. Rogers) but AFAIK it is not downloadable anymore.

  • Oracle Database Required for Install???

I am doing just some general testing of the 9iAS and Portal server products. I would like to try and build a few test portlets with Java and URL based.
Is a database install of Oracle 9i required to properly work with Portal?
Can I install Oracle 9i on the same machine as 9iAS and Portal?

The installation of 9iAS (portal and wireless option) requires that you first perform a 9iAS Infrastructure install. This will create an instance which will hold the portal repository, etc. See the installation guide for more details.

Need oracle 10g software for install on OS windows 7.

You can download the file from
    http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/database/10203vista-087538.html
and install the same with ignoreSysprereqs option at command line.
However, for a certified combination, you need to download 10.2.0.5.0 patchset (patch 8202632) from Metalink and apply on top of this installation.

  • Installing OWB for Vista on Vista

    Hi folks,
I'm trying to install OWB 10.2 for Vista on my laptop which happens to have Vista installed on it. The installation is stuck on the third or fourth screen. It asks me to specify a home location. I answer with the home for the Oracle 10.2.0.3 for Vista that I recently installed.
My problem is that I get stuck at 80%. I've waited for 2 hours and still nothing. I tried a few times and I still have the same problem. I made sure to run it with admin priviledges (sp?). Still have the same problem :

    Hi,
not sure if it applies to you, but it happened to me to get a dialog open waiting for user input below (covered) by the main window.
I think it's something related to using Java for the Oracle Universal Installer (a "real" windows application would not allow a modal dialog go to "under" its main window).
If it happens again try to move around the window to check out if there's something below.
BTW It happened to me playing around with others applications while installing.
Should not happens if you just launch the installer and wait doing nothing until it ends.
    Kind regards,

  • Can not install OWB 9.0.3.33.0 on ORACLE 8i ?

    Hi,
    - ORACLE 8i well installed (with on DB in it)
I need to use OWB and I saw that OWB MUST BE install in the same ORACLE Home than 8i (c:\oracle\ora81) but I got this message :
"Dependant elements : An obligatory validation for OWB installation failed : can't follow install"
And above all, If I install OWB in another ORACLE Home directory (like OraHome9), install is successfull But I don't try at all to connect to my ORACLE 8i DB and got this message : ORA-00942, Table or view inexistant.
I don't know what to try. Please help me.
    Mike

    Hi Igor,
Thanx a lot for your answer. I installed successfully ORACLE 8.1.7 as well as OWB thanks to your advice (OWB Repository assistant).
Nevertheless, I have another question :
I have to build and setup a datawarehouse under oracle 8.1.7 (because the production DB is under it too), and
    I don't really know if I should :
-think the DB as a star schema or a relationnal DB, wich may be normalized
-build it with Oracle warehouse builder 9.3 to attack the DB under Oracle 8.1.7..........unless oracle 8.1.7 datawarehousing possibilities are sufficient, what I don't really know.
    Knowing that :
-The firm is a software editor, in the retail business (so a lot of data to treat)
-They want to make some reporting, probably with crystal reports 9 after I'll build the DWHSE.
-They want refresh data all 24 hours and the Prod DB is about 5-15 Go (depends of the customers)
The DWHSE may be 'classic' (products, customers, supplier, ticket, ...).
    What is your opinion ?
Do you think I can contact a person of ORACLE in Geneva for advices ?

  • Creating directories for installing Oracle Application Server 10.1.2.0.2

    Hi,
I have Red Hat Linux 4.0 and i am trying to install OAS 10.2.0 Enterprise Edition which includes web tier, app tier and database tier all in server machine because i do have about 100GB disk space, 12 GB memory and 9 GB swap space.
Now, i read the OAS installation documents which i got from oracle.com
as well as i read OAS installation chapters from the OAS books i purchased from oracle press.
now each documentation guides us to create different folders with different names for installinmg the AS. these are the list of directories i got from both these documentations.
    for Inventory:
    /home/oracle/oraInventory
    /opt/oracle/oraInventory
    for Infrastructur instance:
    /opt/oracle/oraInfra
    /u01/oracle/infra1012
    for Database files:
    /u01/oracle/infra1012/datafiles
    /opt/oracle/oraInfra/datafiles
    for BI and Forms:
    /opt/oracle
    /u02/oracle
and from above comparisons which one is oracle recommended default directory name that i should create for my installation.
also what path should i give for ORACLE_HOME. is it
    /home/oracle/product or
    /opt/oracle
Can someone please guide me with creating the correct recommended directories for installaing OAS10.1.2.
Or can i go ahead and create my own directory names for the installation.
    Thanks,
    Philip.

Basically it's up to you how to design the directory structure.
What I normally do on my VMWare instances where I run RedHat is one directory in the home dir of the Oracle user.
    So I have:
    /home/oracle
In there one directory for the software called products
    /home/oracle/products
When I have several ORACLE_HOME's they get their own dir in the above directory, for example:
    /home/oracle/products/db102
    /home/oracle/products/as101202infra
    /home/oracle/products/as101202mid
    /home/oracle/products/as10131soa
    and so on.
When dealing with installation at customers I adhere to their standard which is normally based on OFA. Search for OFA on the internet and you get the reason why you see so many differnet directories in the docs and books.

  • Installing Latest Oracle Client & ODT for Windows 7 64-bit

I have a Windows 7 64-bit. I would think that using 32-bit Java, 32-bit Oracle Client and 32-bit ODAC would work just fine on this operating system. However, I had no luck getting it to run. Here is what I did and a few reasons why I prefer to never work with Oracle products:
    Installed 32-bit JDK/JRE (1.6 Update 25)
    Installed 32-bit Oracle Client (11g R2) Home 1
Tested connectivity from SQL Developer successfully
Installed 32-bit ODT (11g R3) to Home 1 (installer noted upgrades and new installs)
Failed connectivity from all things windows (ODBC, ADO, ADO.Net)
    Uninstalled 32-bit ODT
Failed to uninstall 32-bit Oracle Client Home 1 (oraparam.ini file missing among other issues)
    Installed 32-bit Oracle Client (11g R2) Home 2
Failed to uninstall 32-bit Oracle Client Home 1 (told to use deinstall tool)
Failed to uninstall 32-bit Oracle Client Home 2 (told to use deinstall tool)
Failed to run uninstall tool in Home 1 (told to download standalone deinstall tool)
Uninstalled 32-bit Oracle Client Home 2 (completed successfuly with errors - seriously?)
Uninstalled 32-bit Oracle Client Home 1 (completed successfully, but couldn't delete folder)
Oracle.DataAccess and Oracle.Web are still installed in GAC. Uninstall attempts fail (access denied)
    Installed 32-bit Oracle Client (11g R2) Home 1
Tested connectivity from SQL Developer successfully
Tested connectivity from .Net 3.5 successfully (using 32-bit 2.0 dll)
Tested connectivity from .Net 4.0 successfully (using 32-bit 2.0 dll)
Does anyone have any suggestions on getting Oracle Data Tools for Windows to work before I try that again?

I realize ODT uses ODP, but installing release 3 upgraded the .Net 2.0 ODP DLLs (which were installed from the Oracle Client 11g Release 2 install) and added the .Net 4.0 DLLs. After that install everything stopped working from Windows land and then it took the better part of two hours to get it back to what it looked like prior to the install. The other thing weird thing I noticed is that although Oracle.DataAccess is registered in the 2.0 GAC I cannot add a reference that way using VS2010. I have to manually add a reference to the file path. Although it still appears I do not have to have the assembly copied locally to run, so the GAC registration seems to be working in that regard.

  • Best practice for install oracle 11g r2 on Windows Server 2008 r2

    Dear all,
May I know what is the best practice for install oracle 11g r2 on windows server 2008 r2. Should I create a special account for windows for the oracle database installation? What permission should I grant to the folders where Oracle installed and the database related files located (datafiles, controlfiles, etc.)
Just grant Full for Administrators and System and remove permissions for all others accounts?
Also how should I configure windows firewall to allow client connect to the database.

  • Why i need all that b***s*** for installing oracle db?

As all you know to install for instance oracle 11g on redhat, oel, centos, fedora, etc... oracle recommends to install more than 600MB of garbage in the OS...
For instance if we have a minimal redhat install we would need to install more than 580 packages to run oracle. These packages are grouped in 12 groups. they are installed with yum or up2date depending on your OS version:
yum groupinstall "GNOME Desktop Environment" "Editors" "Graphical Internet" "Development Libraries" "Development Tools" "Server Configuration Tools" "Administration Tools" "Base" "Fonts" "Legacy Fonts" "Hardware Support" "System Tools" "X Window System"
Beside that we also need to make sure that the following packages are installed:
    yum install binutils-2.* elfutils-libelf-0.* glibc-2.* glibc-common-2.* libgcc-4.* libstdc++-4.* make-3.* elfutils-libelf-devel-0.* glibc-devel-2.* gcc-4.* gcc-c++-4.* libstdc++-devel-4.* unixODBC-2.* libaio libaio-devel unixODBC-devel sysstat compat-libstdc++
But what's REALLY FUNNY, is that if we install a NON-PAYED version of Oracle (Oracle XE) we don't need any of the previous b***s***!!!! This is annoying, really annoying... we only need to install a sweet sweet RPM, 200MB, and e got it there...
So, anyone here can explain me (convince me) why the h*** we need to install 580 packages and at least 600MB of packages to get oracle ready to be installed?
Btw, I install oracle on linux for about 8 years, so I don't need explanations... I need to be convinced that Oracle could not do better than this... ;)

Or even better create that and some Amazon EC2 AMI's too...
For me it makes sense to have a Just enought OS for Oracle Database to run... Despite most people refer to JeOS as beeing related to VM environment's (for instance Ubuntu JeOS) the JeOS concept is not exclusive to VM's. And it sure even makes more sense to have a JeOS for running in an VM such as Amazon EC2.
EC2 AMIs with an Oracle Database in it already exist. OEL AMIs are being worked on if they're not already there.Exists in US :) not europe...
If you take a closer look at those AMI's you surelly find at least 500MB of software installed that's not needed to run Oracle 11g. I may be wrong but the OEL5 that comes installed on those AMI's eats ~300MB of memory without database running... And for instance I have EC2 instances (fedora 8) running that only uses 65MB memory without the oracle database running... If you think that a 32bit instance in amazon has at most 1.7GB, those 240 MB makes all difference to run databases! If I use the OEL, I waste 250 MB of precious memory that I can use in my database SGA.
