  • Performance Oracle for Linux OS/390

    Hi all,
somebody know some issues in Oracle for Linux OS/390..?
    instalation, performance, etc.
    Thanks and advanced.
    Best regards....

    Hi Shane,
Oracle has only released client software for Intel Macs, but not the full database server software. If you want to run the Oracle database on your Mac, I suggest installing on a supported OS running in a virtual machine (VMware Fusion, Parallels, or VirtualBox). Michael McLaughlin has a very thorough post on his blog about using an Intel Mac as a client for a database server running in VMware Fusion.

  • Oracel for Linux/390 limits and performances

Has Oracle for Linux for S/390 any dimension limits?
Is possible and realistic to have a 20 Tera byte database on this platform?
Witch kind of performance I'll should expect?
Oracle for Linux is performant than other Unix like Solaris?
    Tank's, Andrea.

I too have managed to get oracle installed on RedHat 2.4.9-17 kernel (Linux/390). However, I am kinda stuck there - I am completely new to Oracle. Is there some basic literature available on things like how to see the database schema (I ran the "@mkdb" cmd in the installation process, and I guess that created some sample database)? or how to look at the table data? I tried the following:
    $ sqlplus /nolog
    SQL*Plus: Release ...
    (c) Copyright ...
    SQL> connect scott/tiger@p901_tcp
    Connected
    SQL> select * from dba_users
    2 .
    SQL> help
    SP2-0171: HELP not accessible
    SQL> quit
Disconnected from Oracle9i Enterprise Edition ...
    $
    Any pointers? thanx,

  • Choosing oracle for linux ! what are merits and demerits

we are going to choose oracle for linux for our e-commerce site which will serve as search engin and shopping mall.

    Thanks cgawoods for the advice...
I followed all the steps that you mentioned... Installing the Oracle client proved to be easy as pie on the Linux server, and connecting to the Oracle instance on the NT server was instantaneous with sqlplus... tnsping also finds the Oracle server without a hitch.
I also made the modifications to the coldfusion start script you mentioned, i.e. setting ORACLE_HOME, etc (which is also mentioned in Allaire's docs).
However.... (yes, here it comes) The DSN still comes up as 'failed' when I try to add a new one using the native drivers in the Coldfusion Administrator.
Do I need to do anything on the Oracle server side (NT) first in order to get things working?
I'm pretty stumped at this point as to why this won't work.
    Thanks
    DH

I've done Cold Fusion installs on Solaris 2.6, and am an OCP DBA. If you download the Oracle 8.0.5 EE (RedHat 5.2) or Oracle8i EE(Redhat 6.0-6.2) Server programs, you may use the "Server" installation as an Oracle Client. Once you get Oracle installed, you will need to configure the tnsnames.ora file to point to your remote database. Then, you will need to point Cold Fusion to the $ORACLE_HOME where you installed the Oracle Server software. You will want (and probably need) to use the "native" oracle driver for Cold Fusion instead of the ODBC driver. Once the Oracle installation is complete, and you can "tnsping" the Oracle instance on NT, you should be able to configure Cold Fusion to talk to your Oracle database. It's just a matter of reading Allaire's documentation on configuring Cold Fusion for use with Oracle at that point.<HR></BLOCKQUOTE>

I have been using Oracle for about two months now without
hitting any licensing issues. That's not to say that it won't
expire some time in the future...

  • Problem with oracle listener linux/390

    Hi everybody,
I've installed oracle 9i developer release on linux/390.
The database seems ok, but when i try to connect from other
    machines i get:
Ora-03113: End of file on communication channel
The failure occurs after the connection is established.
I've read in some oracle faqs, this cause may be a database
    server error.
I've checked all configuration files, but found nothing.
    Can someone help me?
    Best regards,
    Chris

For those who asked about testing on SLES7 and getting a trial copy of SLES7 (since it now costs money), apparently SuSE will furnish trial copies of their distribution. They can be obtained through the SuSE sales rep.

    Hello,
i have downloaded Oracle 11G R2 for Linux and my host OS is Ubuntu. After unzipping the downloaded file i got
    1. response folder,
    2.upgrade folder and
    3.oracle-xe-11.2.0-1.0.x86_64.rpm file.
My host OS Ubuntu is 64 bit, and i have downloaded Oracle 11G R2 64 bit for Linux.
But i am unable to use that database. Please help how to use that !

    Hello;
Your download does not appear to be correct, I would expect a much different result from unzipping.
I would check this out and follow it to the letter if I were doing it :

    Later

Officially, no. But there is a how-to out there to install Oracle
7.x on a Linux machine using the icbs support that can be built
into Linux. Check one of the official how-to sites and see if you
    can find it there.

  • Oracle for Linux - released?!?

Yeah, I'm aware this might seem a bit foolish to ask, but
when I call Oracle in Denmark (which seems natural to me, as
I live there :) I am told that Oracle 8 for Linux isn't released
yet. So what's the deep truth about this?

    1) Someone had suggested that the recent webcast with Larry Ellison would be about Database 12c, but that didn't make sense because the other presenter in the webcast was the head of SPARC.
    2) Amazon is taking orders for a book called Pro Oracle Database 12c Administration that is supposed to be published on April 17th.
    3) Apress Books has two titles announced for mid-May.
I would assume that those books cannot be published before the product is released, so those dates might provide some indication.

As far as I can remember there are two different licensing
schemes. The first one is : max. allowed concurrent login; the
second one is: max. allowed no. of users created. For which one
to use, you might talk to your local Oracle Sales rep.

  • Update: Install solution for latest Oracle9i for Linux/390 download

Release notes have been updated to include the following solution from MetaLink
Doc ID 158104.1 out of metalink.
    ++++++++++++++++
    Copy of Doc ID 158104.1
    ++++++++++++++++
fact: Oracle Server - Enterprise Edition 9.0.1
    fact: Intel Based Server LINUX
    fact: RedHat 7.1
    symptom: Installation fails
    symptom: Error during linking
    symptom: ins_plsql.mk
    cause: <BUG:1843232>.
Versions of ld prior to version 2.11 ignored the "-z defs" flag. ld
version 2.11 and later have the ability to use this flag. Because of
this the genclntsh script fails to produce the libclntsh.so library on a
    machine running ld > 2.11.
The "-z defs" is set in the variable LD_SELF_CONTAINED in the
    genclntsh script.
    fix:
When receiving this error during installation, follow these steps:
    1. Open a new console window on the host as the installation user.
    2. Set up the Oracle environment (i.e. ORACLE_HOME).
    3. Make a backup of the $ORACLE_HOME/genclntsh script.
    4. Remove the ${LD_SELF_CONTAINED} flag from the ld command in the 'Create
    Library' section.
    5. Run the genclntsh script.
    6. Click on 'Retry' in the Universal Installer
    The installation will now proceed.
This should be fixed in 9.0.2

  • Developer version of Oracle for Linux

I am currently enrolled in a class here at ISU where I am working with an off-campus company to develop a better user database for them. They run Oracle, but we must mirror their system on one of our machines to do the work. I was looking for a developer version of oracle that I can use this semester for this project. Does anyone know where I can get something like this?

You can download it from OTN.
