Oracle on Debian Linux

Oracle doesn't support Debian Linux. Has anyone gotten it to successfully run on Debian Linux? What would I need to do to get it working?

Oracle works nice on Debian 2.2 ;-)
Install 8.1.6 because comes with jre
you should install following debian packages:
libg++2.8.2-glibc2.1
libstdc++2.9-glibc2.1
once installed you should fixed up file dbstart (follow instructions on www.oralinux.org)

  • Running ORACLE on Debian Linux

    Hi!
I have installed ORACLE 10g. When I run "oracle" command from oracle user account, nothing's doing. When I run "sqlplus" and login as "/ as sysdba" then I receive a message "Connected to an idle instance.". So, what have I do to run ORACLE?
    Thanks in advance.
Ps. Sorry for my bad english.

Connected to an idle instance. This message means that your DB is not running, or ORACLE_SID environment variable is not set properly. Be sure that ORACLE_SID has correct value, then, if you get that message, type "startup".

  • Oracle 9i and Linux

In the documentation of Oracle 9i database, it stands that it has been validated with suse 7.1 and patches.
I would like if anybody tried to run Oracle 9i database on a Mandrake 7.x or 8, ora Debian linux ?

    Lauren,
I have oracle 9i running like a dream on Debian 2.4.9 kernel.
I had no issues with binutils etc. The trick is actually in
making a modification in genclntsh in the $ORACLE_HOME/bin
    directory.
    Debian (woody)
binutils 2.11.90.0.31-1 (not that it matters as far as I'm
    concerned
    kernel 2.4.9
When the installation gets to the relinking part make the
    following mods in genclntsh
    (all on one line)
    SYSLIBS=`cat ${ORACLE_HOME}/lib/sysliblist`" -L/usr/lib/gcc-
lib/i386-linux/2.95.4 -lgcc -ldl -lm -lc /lib/ld-linux.so.2"
If you use Redhat or other distro check /usr/lib/gcc-lib
directory for the exact subdirectory. On Redhat it is actually
    called
/usr/lib/gcc-lib/i386-redhat-linux/.... and then check for the
sub directory in there. It might be 2.96 or some other number.
This was all I had to do bar from setting up one or two symbolic
    links in the /usr/lib directory
The linking step was looking for libstdc++-libc6.1-1.so.2 but
there was only libstdc++-libc6.1-2.so.3 (which was a sym link
to -3-libc6.1-2-2.10.0.so). So I created a symbolic link
libstdc++-libc6.1-1.so.2 to this file as well. (I think it was
    this one)
Check the log files which ones it is looking for.
save the file. now run the genclntsh script. This builds the
    libclntsh.so.9 lib.
Be patient it may take a minute or 2 .
Go back to your Oracle installer and click the retry button. It
    should be ok
If this doesn't do it for you. click ignore for every window in
the Oracle installer you get and then exit out of the installer.
run the relink command (relink all) and check which files it is
complaining about. Fix them up in the /usr/lib dirctory
and relink again . If succesfull run the root.sh script as root
and you should be on your way.

  • Oracle on debian?

Is there any problems with running oracle on debian/GNU linux? I have tried installing it on woody (testing release) and sid (unstable release). however whenever I start ./runInstaller it hangs with: Initializing Java Virtual Machine from ../stage/Components/oracle.swd.jre/1.1.8/1/DataFiles/Expanded/linux/bin/jre. Please wait...
Additionally, when checking top, jre has 98.8% cpu usage.
If anyone has successfully installed oracle on any recent release of debian (potato, woody, sid), please let me know what you did to get it working.

    To All on this thread.
I am running Oracle 8i (8.1.7) and 9i (9.0.1) on the following Debian versions without any problems.
    2.2.12 (only 8.1.7)
    2.4.12 glibc 2.2 (8.1.7 and 9.0.1 and 9iAS)
    2.4.17 glibc 2.2 (8.1.7 and 9.0.1 and 9iAS)
Downgrading compilers and binutils like on redhat is not necessary.
    Main things to look for
    - Make sure you have 500-600 M free in your /tmp.
    - Make sure that your swap file is big enough > 1.5 Gb due to memory leak in some versions of Oracle Universal Installer
    - check your locale settings in /etc/locale.gen. Make sure you don't have UTF8 or UTF16 there becuase java 1.1.8 doesn't support it and your runInstaller will crash with sigsegv 11 error
For 8.1.7 under 2.4 kernel perform normal installation
Download glibc-2.1.3-stubs.tar.gz and follow instructions in the README file
    For 9.0.1
Follow standard instructions. When it gets to the stage of linking you will get an error reported.
Now cd to the bin directory and edit genclntsh
    replace
    # Original line
    SYSLIBS=`cat ${ORACLE_HOME}/lib/sysliblist`" -ldl -lm -lc"
    by
    # New line
    SYSLIBS=`cat ${ORACLE_HOME}/lib/sysliblist`" -L/usr/lib/gcc-lib/i386-linux/2.95.4 -lgcc -ldl -lm -lc /lib/ld-linux.so.2"
Doublecheck in /usr/lib/gcc-lib directory for the directory i386-linux and the version nr of the file in that directory. On Redhat for example it is /usr/lib/gcc-lib/redhat-linux/2.93.2 .
    Save and exit
    run genclntsh
when finished click retry in the installer program. It should be all working ok now.

  • IMPORTANT:What Oracle on which Linux works?

After wasting weeks on trying to get OAS 3.20 and 4.07 to work on
RedHat Linux 5.2, I am wondering is there any website listing

  • How can i install oracle 10g on linux cluster

    Dear all:
please advice How can i install oracle 10g on linux cluster service ..
    thanks ,,

Without RAC, you can only have one instance manage the database. One instance = one set of processes communicating via IPC.
Unless you know of a way to have processes use memory-based IPC across nodes, you need to pick a node and install & run the database software on that node.

  • Creation of two databases in oracle 11g on linux

    HI,
I need to create two databases in oracle 11g on linux.
how to set SID'S in .bash_profile and change the init.ora file.
    pls anyone let me know
    thanks
    srinivas

If you have different databases on same node you could choose to not set ORACLE_SID in shell init file but use instead interactive oraenv Oracle script to set the right ORACLE_SID.

    Hi there!
The first thing you should do if you get ANY (almost) error when
installing Oracle Server in RedHat Linux v6,0 is to read this
    document carefully: http://jordan.fortwayne.com/oracle/
After hours of struggle it finally worked for me :-)))))
Only two things to add here:
    1) If you want to be able to connect to the Linux server
(telnet) and running utilities like sqlplus locally on the
server, you should copy the ".profile" file to the users home
directory, add the user to the group "dba" AND make sure that
the $ORACLE_HOME directory has execute permissions for members
of the "dba" group (mine had default ONLY permission for the
    owner to execute).
    2) The file "listener.ora" was (for some reason) written
with "oracle_sid" where it really should say the real SID name
that is in my case "ORCL".
I just can't thank the guy who wrote the step-by-step
Installation guide for Oracle on RedHat Linux enough... THANK
    YOU!

  • Oracle 9i on LINUX Transparent Gateway for SQL Server

Does anybody know if there is a Transparent Gateway available for Oracle 9i on LINUX to connect to SQL Server? I have run the installer and cannot seem to find the install options for any Transparent Gateways. I am familiar with their location in the universal installer as I have installed the Oracle/SQL Server Transparent Gateway with Oracle in WinNT. Perhaps Transparent Gateways for Oracle/LINUX are not available?
    Thanks in advance.

I have the same issue - we want to upgrade our 9.2 to 10g Linux, and need to maintain connectivity to some legacy sqlserver databases. I can't find any mention of tg4msql for linux. What gives? Anyone know the answer to this? thanks, michael

    Hi,
I think that Feedbak forum is not the best place for this problem.
    You should ask this into
=> Installation Forum : Database Installation

=> Linux Forum : Generic Linux
Anyway, you can find an install doc here :

  • Installed Debian Linux over my entire hdd. how to reinstall os x?

I installed Debian linux for ppc over my entire system using a usb drive. OS x is gone. How do I get it back? My internal optical drive doesn't work. I put the Tiger install cd that came with the computer into my second computer macbook in target mode. The linux system could read the disc, but I can't figure out how to boot from it. Any ideas? This will likely take some Linux know-how. The linux guys at the forum weren't any help. I think they were a little bitter that I wanted to switch back.

Fixed it. I just removed the internal hard drive disk and restored my Superduper disk image back onto my drive.
