Oracle over to the Unixes ?
I gather that Oracle is stopping its Windoze stay and crossing over to
the Unixes .
IS this true ?
Where does Oracle work better :
on the Unixes
or on M$ Windoze ?

Hi,
Can you write the issue and process indetail.

Renaming oracle datafiles at the unix level
I have noticed that some of the datafile under /oracle/DV1/sapdata2/ have some strange characters in them
Grrr - DBAs that don't know brtools.....
for example:
drwxr-xr-x 2 oradv1 dba 256 Nov 02 23:22 sr3\177_2
and it shows as sr3_2 unless you use ls -lb which shows the above:
Now can I simply stop the DB and cp -rp sr3\177_2 to sr3_2?
I can actually cp -rp sr3\177_2 to sr3_X and then copy sr3_X to sr3_2 or an mv.
So can I do this without screwing up Oracle and SAP?
What should I do as the \177 characters should not be there?
Thanks MikieHello Mike,
at first... the naming of the folder is no problem in running SAP ... it is only a "cosmetic" failure.
But to your question.....
1) Shutdown SAP and Oracle (shutdown immediate)
2) Copy (and remove) or move your data files
3) Publish the new file names to oracle the following way:
> startup mount;
> alter database rename file '<OLD_FILENAME>' to '<NEW_FILENAME>';
> shutdown immediate;
> startup ;
After this the database should start "normally" with the new data file names / directory structure. After these steps i would make a backup of the database.
I have done this many times (not only in SAP environment).
For more information of the rename command:

Trying to find the correct Oracle version for SCO Unix 5.06
Please I will appreciate you can help me indicating where can I download the correct Oracle version for SCO Unix 5.06. I have downloaded the Tru64 Compaq version but it is not working with SCO.
Best regards

So that we may better diagnose DOWNLOAD problems, please provide the following information.
- Server name
- Filename
- Date/Time
- Browser + Version
- O/S + Version
- Error MsgThis is pretty old. From the certify matrix, you can see the last available versions this platform supported were 9.0.1 and 8.1.7, just for the Intel SCO Open UNIX 8 with LKP. SCO 5.0 last time I used it was with an Oracle7.3 release. In case you don't have software it'll be hard to find, unless you address this to your Oracle Representative.
Are you absolutely required to run on this version? Otherwise, you could try new software and new oracle releases, unless you want to run unsupported.

How to access SQL server in oracle running in aix unix?
Hi all,
I have oracle database running in IBM AIX OS, and I need to query data in
SQL SERVER 2000.
How to do that?
Is there free Sqlserver ODBC drivers for unix?
ThanksHi,
I prefer heterogenous services over ODBC for this!
I have my notes here, which may help.
http://www.dba-oracle.com/t_heterogeneous_database_connections_sql_server.htm
1. Install Oracle ODBC drivers on the server (your local Oracle database) that will access the remote SQL Server database using the database link.
2. Setup the ODBC connection on the local Oracle database using the Windows ODBC Data Source Administrator
3. Test the ODBC drivers to ensure that connectivity is made to the SQL Server database.
4. Ensure that your global_names parameter is set to False.
5. Configure the Oracle Heterogeneous services by creating an initodbc.ora file within the Oracle database.
7. Modify the Listener.ora file.
SID_NAME is the DSN for the remote database.
ORACLE_HOME is the actual Oracle home file path.
PROGRAM tells Oracle to use heterogeneous services.
SID_LIST_LISTENER =
(SID_LIST =
(SID_DESC =
(SID_NAME=Cas30C) -- Enter the DSN on this line
(ORACLE_HOME = c:\oracle10gdb) -- Enter your Oracle home on this line
(PROGRAM = hsodbc) ) )
8. Modify the Tnsnames.ora file. This is the Oracle database installation accessed by the users to connect to the ODBC drivers
(DESCRIPTION=
(ADDRESS_LIST=
(Address=(PROTOCOL=TCP)
(HOST=
-- (Server x)
(PORT=1521))) -- Enter the port on which the server x Oracle installation
-- is listening
(CONNECT_DATA=(SID=Cas30c)) - Enter the DSN name
(HS=OK) -- Enter this value. It tells Oracle to use hetergeneous services
9. Reload the listener on local Oracle database
10. Create a database link on the local Oracle installation that accesses the heterogeneous connection, which, in turn, connect to SQL Server.
11. Run a SQL Server Select statement from the Oracle installation using the database link.
Hope this helps. . .

Pass a Value to Variable from the unix environment in ODI (ELT)
Hi
i am very new to ODI environment.
i want know how to pass a value to variables in oracle data integrator from unix environment.
Example:
Variable name : Sales
for variable name sales i want to pass the value from unix environment.
Regards,
Raj
Edited by: user11137587 on Aug 19, 2009 6:26 AMWork Around !
You can execute OS commands using Jython script. Probably you need to flush your enviornment variables value into a file using jython script and then read those value into ODI variable from the file.
BUt may I know why you want to read environment variable vaules in ODI, Dont you think this will make your application less portable

Differences between Oracle 8i for a UNIX Platform and Oracle 8i for a Linux Platform
Hello,
J would like to know if there are some differences between Oracle 8i for a UNIX Platform and Oracle 8i for a Linux Platform.
I know that there are some differences on Oracle 8i Parallel Server and i know that some products are not include like precompiler (Mod*Ada, Pro*FORTRAN) on a Linux Platform.
Thank you.We have installed Oracle 8i on Solaris 8 and it had a great performance, of course that the hardware and licence invested here was costed my the office where i work. Personaly i'd installed linux reh hat 8 and oracle 8i, imagine that, it could be implemented by any individual that has the time to do so.
By buyinng from a company that has a good background you could be sure that you will have support.
Bottom line, if you have the $ to buy great hardware go for a unix platform. But if you don't a Red Hat Linux Server Licence with a 1 year sopport and Oracle data base is about 3500Dls.

What is the Oracle equivalent of the Microsoft Access FIRST function?
Using: Oracle 10gR2 RAC on SUSE Linux 9 (10.2.0.3)
In the process of converting a Microsoft Access database to Oracle, an Access query is using the FIRST function.
What is the Oracle equivalent of the Microsoft Access FIRST function?
In the attempt to convert, the Oracle FIRST_VALUE function was used. However, the same results was not achieved.

How to monitor the Unix syslog through OEM
I have a new install of 10gR2 OEM to monitor Unix servers but can not find where is the unix syslog being monitored or if it can be examined the same way as the oracle alert log.
Appreciate the feedback.Look at the metric
Log File Pattern Matched Line Count
Dont be fooled by the column headings ..
Put in the logfile name,
put in the text to search for in the timestamp column,
put in % in the match pattern in perl (this is the exclude from alert text)
Thats it .. so yes you can monitor the syslogs.
(PS This is in the wrong forum for this question -search the other one and you will see this answer repeated by me a few months ago) -
In oracle 10g is the same Oracle Net Listener than...?
Hi forum members again I'm vey new in oracle server10g, this time I have a doubt about oracle components , that is the same the Oracle Net Listner than the Oracle SQL*Net listener, if is not the same, please tell me the diference
Thanks in advanceSQL*Net has gone through a few minor revisions over the years.. We've seen SQL*Net Version 1, SQL*Net V2, Net8, Oracle Networking and now (in 10g) Oracle Net Services.
It's exactly the same, only different.
Not surprisingly, Oracle actually documents the differences in their documentation which is freely available for all to read.
If you want some information about what's new in Oracle Networking, I encourage you to read the introduction section of the "Oracle® Database Net Services Administrator's Guide (10g Release 2 (10.2))" titled "What's New in Oracle Net Services?"
Reading that will not only give you a better understanding, but also justify the jobs of the technical writers who create over 55,000 pages of information for our use. <g> -
Dear Oracle: PLEASE improve the SEARCH on these forums!!!
Subject: Dear Oracle: PLEASE improve the SEARCH on these forums!!!
I have been getting frustrated using the search on these forums. I find the content very useful (especially as I cannot seem to find any other forums for Oracle Portal) but the search facility is very poor.
Firstly, the Search will on search for an exact match in the body of the messages, not the subject at all! This is very annoying as people usually sum-up there question in the subject and often do not repeat the subject in the message.
Secondly, the search looks for exact matches of your search string, so searching for more than one word become difficult. Bascially, it does only an exact match, not a word search, so forget about using keywords to search on as you would do in every other search engine and be very carful of the order of your words, you'll get a completly different set of results by swaping the order of your words... :(
eg. Selecting "ALL FORUMS", try searching for "Customizing Change Password Page". no hits? ok try "Customizing Password" still no hits? ok try "Customizing the Password". still no hits? ok just try "customizing". You get 10 Pages of 20 (Oracle conviently puts them over 10 pages so you cannot view them all on a html page and do your own secondary search using CTRL-F). Well, this is too many, lets just try "Change Password". again 20 x 10+ pages. At least this time we've got some that also have the work customizing in the subject. If only we got here on the first search... Don't even think of adding the word "PDK" or "Example" to your search...
I have already provided feedback to Oracle on this matter (and am still waiting for a reply). If you would also like the search improved, please also send Oracle some feedback and make this forum more useful. If enough people pester them they might think it's important enought to change. link below:
http://otn.oracle.com/contact/htdocs/feedback.htm
Cheers,
Tim.
P.S. In the meantime, does anyone know of any other good Portal forums?Couldn't agree more, if only the search was as good as on Metalink...

An Oracle userID containing the @ character; supported?

How do I login as that user?
sqlplus "TLM@FOO" fails, thinks I'm trying to connect to the TNS service @FOO
sqlplus "TLM\@FOO" fails (thought I'd try to escape the @ sign in the Unix shell)
interestingly, once I get a failed message and get to this prompt:

I can enter "TLM@FOO" as username and his password, and I get in.
But how do I structure the "sqlplus" command to accept a userID that contains the "@" sign?SQL> create user "TLM@FOO" identified by titi;
