Oracle parameters with ssd

I'm starting to migrate my whole database from normal disks to ssd ... do i have to change any initialization parameters ?

Hi,
  It would be better to ask this question in the general RDBMS forum here -

  • Oracle DB with SSD

    I have a HP DL 380 G7 + 2 Xeon Processors + 12GB DDR + 6HDD 10k RAID5
    I know that RAID 5 is not the best choise for a Oracle database with writing, but it's cheaper than RAID 10.
    But the Database was smooth, no locks, relative fast, but there is a new legislation that forces anyone to have a certificated application. This certificated application records everything you do, every click, every document you create, modify or read. Has you can imagine this made the database writing 10 to 100, and know it's getting slower.
    Instead of going for RAID 10, i was thinking about SSD Technology.
    Would it work to put a HP SSD/HD on the server for caching? I could put Redo logs, Temp, control files, etc inside this drive, to avoid too much writing processes on the SAS Drives.
    This drives are very very fast, but they have a low life expectancy, if i'm not mistaken it's about 3 to 5 years with lots of writing.
    What is you opinion? Could it work? Should i forget this and go straight to RAID 10?
    Regards.

    RAID 5 with 3 disks runs slow.
    So i put 5 disks and 1 spare.
    I still have 2 more disks i can increase in the server. I could get 2 more disk and use RAID 1, and place the Redo logs.
    I used DB-Tuna, and i checked that some update SQL statements lock the DB. These are very powerful statements that update lots of tables. This only happens when the users are introducing invoice with lots of products for one company.
    This company is very complex, there is a major company and 7 more small companies inside.
    One company receives all the products and then distributes for all the other smaller companies. This is the operation that usually locks the DB. There is lots of updates, and when they are doing this operation, it locks all the other users.
    Beside this operation, the database works better, but not fast enough.
    I increased the Redo log size up to 100mb, it started to run better, but not efficient enough. I'm afraid to increase too much, and when the switch occur it can lock the DB for a long time.
    I suspect that the SQL statement is not at it's best, but the programers said that they have the same application running in the other companies that work well.
    I don't have how to confirm this, so i have to do the best that i can.
    Like i said before, this could be because of the certification of the application, because before this, the database was running great. When we installed the new application, it started all of this problems, the disks are working harder than ever, everything is being recorded for the financial department.
    Increasing 2 more SAS disks for redo logs is a great idea. I'm not sure if this RAID controller can control 2 different raids at the same time, and if it can, is it efficient? Must look at the controllers manual.

  • Oracle Function with out parameters

    Hi, I'm trying to access a stored function on an oracle server with 2 out parameters, 2 in parameters and an out ref cursor.
    PL/SQL looks like this
    nStatusCode OUT INTEGER,
    sStatusMsg OUT VARCHAR2,
    sUsrNr           IN VARCHAR2,
    sPassword           IN VARCHAR2,
    crsReturn OUT pck_cursor.retRecordSet
    I drag the function onto dataset designer and it successfully maps the results to the datatable, it maps datatypes for first out parameters to decimal and string.
    the method genearated for fill by looks like (out decimal?,out string,string, string, out object)
    problem is, everytime i try to call this function it gives me casting exceptions for the first 2 out parameters, for the decimal it's not specified in more detail. for the other one it says there was an exception casting from OracleString to string. If I change the PL/SQL function to leave the first 2 out parameters away it works fine. Do I manually need to change the TableAdapter definitions??

    Hi,
    I think I found the problem but not a good solution. It seems to be a problem with auto code generation for TableAdapters in the Dataset wizard. In the Parameter Definition for the Command I set DbType.Decimal and DbType.Sting for the SqlDbtype Property of the out params. The GetData and Fill Method is generated with Fill(out decimal? out1, out string out2). When I look in the generated code ith first sets the SqlDbtype as written but after this also the OracleDbtype to OracleDbType.Decimal and OracleDbType.Varchar2. The casting these types before returning the throws the exception. Any idea how to change this behavior?

  • Problem when trying to refresh oracle screens with latest data

    hello experts,
    i have one problem,i want to refresh the oracle screen with the latest data from the data
    base.
    It is a two stage process.At first step one user will select a row from the screen and then he will press a button .
    now the second screen will appear and the detail of the employee will be displayed.
    First step has been completed and the data is coming in the second form via parameters and i can see the full information of the employee.
    Now i want to refresh the oracle form i.e. suppose if my dba has made any changes in the oracle table( EMP table) i want that after pressing the refresh button user can see the
    latest data from the database.
    in WHEN_BUTTON_PRESSED trigger i have written this codes.
    enter_query;
    execute_query;
    but they are not giving the expected result.
    And one more thing please suggest whether in the second form i should use database item
    or non database item.
    When i am using database item when i am trying to close second from one pop up is appearing
    and asking that whether i want to save the changes.
    please suggest how can i remove this message from my application.
    Regards
    Anutosh

    Hi,
    what data did you transfer via parameters to the second form ?
    how did you populate the datablock in the second form ?
    Typical solution would be:
    (For my example the block is both forms is named EMP, and is based on the table SCOTT.EMP)
    In Form 1, transfer the primary key-value of the current record to a global or parameter (will use global in my example):
    e.g. you have a WHEN-BUTTON-PRESSED-Trigger with the following code:
    <pre>
    :GLOBAL.EMPNO:=:EMP.EMPNO;
    CALL_FORM('FORM2');
    </pre>
    In Form 2, you have a WHEN-NEW-FORM-INSTANCE-Trigger with code:
    <pre>
    DEFAULT_VALUE('GLOBAL.EMPNO', NULL);
    IF :GLOBAL.EMPNO IS NOT NULL THEN
    GO_BLOCK('EMP');
    EXECUTE_QUERY;
    :GLOBAL.EMPNO:=NULL;
    END IF;
    </pre>
    On block EMP in Form 2 there is a PRE-QUERY-Trigger with following code:
    <pre>
    IF :GLOBAL.EMPNO IS NOT NULL THEN
    :EMP.EMPNO:=:GLOBAL.EMPNO;
    END IF;
    </pre>
    And at last, in your refresh-button would be the following code:
    <pre>
    :GLOBAL.EMPNO:=:EMP.EMPNO;
    GO_BLOCK('EMP');
    EXECUTE_QUERY;
    :GLOBAL.EMPNO:=NULL;
    </pre>
    Hope this helps

  • I can't execute oracle functions with c#.  i'm using oracle 9i version.

    i have a problem trying to execute an oracle function with c#.net. The Oracle version i'm using is Oracle 9i.
    This is the function definition: (it's defined and working right because i have tryed it with SQLWorksheet)
    CREATE OR REPLACE Function NRegistros return integer is
    Numero integer(4);
    begin
    select count(*) into Numero from singles;
    return Numero;
    END NRegistros;
    But with c#.Net i can't acces it because i get an error: "this is not a procedure or is not defined". And i think the code is right. In fact in the same code you can see that i'm using an stored procedure and i have not problems. But with the function i have problems. Is it possible that "OracleClient" can't work with Oracle9i functions??. This is the code:
    OracleParameter Parametro = new OracleParameter("Name", OracleType.VarChar,10);
    OracleParameter ParametroFuncion = new OracleParameter("Retorno", OracleType.Int32, 4);
    Parametro.Direction = ParameterDirection.Output;

  • How to use lexical parameters with Sql Server Stored Procedure?

    Hi,
    I'm developing a BI Publisher report on a sql server database. I need to execute a stored procedure to dynamically build the query by replacing the lexical parameters with the values of varaibles of the stored procedure. With Oracle stored procedures, I have used data template and had reference the varaiable in SP by prefixing it with '&'.
    It doesn't work if I try to do the same thing with SQL server. Is there anyone who has come across the similar situation? Please let me know if anyone has got any ideas...
    Thanks in Advance

    TopLink currently doesn't support multiple ResultSets. Multiple ResultSets support is considered for a future release.

  • Oracle parameters related kernel parameters

    Hi,
    Can anyone tell me hwo can i get the info about the oracle parameters which are related to os, for example- i am getting a request to change the process parameter for the db instance which are the kernel parameters need to be changed..
    so we have to relate the kernel parameters with database parameters. like this, can i get anywhere for oracle parameters which are associated with kernel parameters. Please let me know if anyone has this information.
    Thank u.

    Hey.. i want to know which oracle parameter is associated with kernel parameters ..
    something like this shmmax === related SGA (which exact oracle parameter of SGA need to be changed  at database level) similarly for process parameter which parameter is related at os level (in kernel parameters)
    I think my question is clear now.. to get the appropriate help.
    Thank U..
    Did you consider that it is not a one-for-one relationship?
    The installation guide is very explicit about how to set the kernel parameters.
    Most importantly, what error triggered this request?  We often see people chasing the wrong solution for their unstated problems.

  • Deprecated system parameters with specified values:

    Hi ,
    I am getting below in alert log:
    Deprecated system parameters with specified values:
    remote_os_authent
    IS this parameter is suppotable in 11G and also how can i remove it from SP file with out bouncing the instance.
    thanks..

    1) It is deprecated in 11g as er your alert log message. http://docs.oracle.com/cd/B28359_01/server.111/b28320/initparams199.htm
    2) Set it in your spfile to FALSE which will reset this back to the default. This can't be changed dynamically and you will have to reboot your instance.
    alter system set remote_os_authent=false scope=spfile;

  • INTEGRATION OF ORACLE APPS  WITH MOBILE SMS

    {color:#3366ff}Dear All,
    I would like to Integrate the Oracle Apps with Mobile SMS,
    The Task is that..
    " WHENEVER THE PURCHASE ORDER IS RELEASED BY A SENIOR PURCHASE MANAGER, THEN A SMS MESSAGE HAS TO COME TO HIS SENIOR MANAGERS MOBILE Phone "
    Is it Possible to Integrate Oracle Apps with Mobile Phone if it is possible then send me the DEMO Application procedure.....................
    Please help me out..
    Regards,
    Vijay .

    Sending an SMS is a relatively small customisation if you work with an SMS aggregator such as Clickatel or TXTLocal. Both expose simple Web Service api's that you call with the phone number and message text as parameters. The aggregator then hands the message off to the mobile phone network for delivery to a users phone. The aggregators also provide web services that allow you to be notified when they receive an SMS message for you. So if you wanted to be really smart you could allow the user to reply to the original SMS with "Approve" or "Reject" and update the status of the PO/requisition automatically and advance the workflow.

  • Change in Oracle Parameters and Log file size

    Hello All,
    We have scheduled DB Check job and the log file showed few errors and warnings in the oracle parameter that needs to be corrected. We have also gone through the SAP Note #830576 – Oracle Parameter Configuration to change these parameters accordingly. However we need few clarifications on the same.
    1.Can we change these parameters directly in init<SID>.ora file or only in SP file. If yes can we edit the same and change it or do we need to change it using BR tools.
    2.We have tried to change few parameters using DB26 tcode. But it prompts for maintaining the connection variables in DBCO tcode. We try to make change only in default database but it prompts for connection variables.
    Also we get check point error. As per note 309526 can we create the new log file with 100MB size and drop the existing one. Or are there any other considerations that we need to follow for the size of log file and creating new log file. Kindly advise on this. Our Environment is as follows.
    OS: Windows 2003 Server
    DB: Oracle 10g
    regards,
    Madhu

    Hi,
    Madhu, We can change oracle parameters at both the levels that is init<SID> as well as SPFILE level.
    1. If you do the changes at init<SID> level then you have to generate the SPFILE  again and then database has to be restarted for the parameters to take effect.
        If you make the changes in SPFILE then the parameters will take effect depending on the parameter type whether it is dynamic or static. You also need to generate the PFILE i.e init<SID>.ora
    2. If possible do not change the oracle parameters using the tcode. I would say it would be better if you do it via the database and it would be much easier.
    3. Well its always good to have a larger redo log size. But only one thing to keep in mind is that once you change the size of the redolog the size of the archive log also changes although the number of files will decrease.
    Apart from that there wont be any issues.

  • Cannot connect to Oracle 8i with IIOP from JDev3.1

    Hi,
    I have the problem of connect to Oracle 8i with IIOP from JDeveloper 3.1 when I build application with BC4J. I can connect to my Oracle 8i database with ODBC easily but failed with IIOP. Does anyone here has the same experience?
    Any help will be appreciated. Thank you.
    null

    Hi Daniel:
    I've solved the problem mentioned above. It requires two settings:
    I) Enabling Multithreaded Server Support for IIOP Clients;
    II) Listener's listening to port 2481
    Of course you should have installed JServer into your Oracle 8i database.
    In your init.ora file, you should have the following two lines:
    mts_dispatchers = "(PROTOCOL=TCP)(PRE=oracle.aurora.server.SGiopServer)"
    mts_dispatchers = "(protocol=TCP)"
    To confirm this you may use SQLPLUS to list the parameters of the database setting:
    mts_dispatchers string (PROTOCOL=TCP)(PRE=oracle.aurora.server.SGiopServer), (protocol=TCP)
    mts_servers integer 1
    And in TNSnames.ora file the setting should like this:
    (ADDRESS_LIST =
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = wangsvr)(PORT = 1521))
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = wangsvr)(PORT = 2481))
    All these two settings ( init.ora and tnsnames.ora ) can be done with "Database Configuration Assistant" and "Net8 Assistant"
    I solved my problem this way, your problem may not the same but anyway you may try it.

  • Comparing oracle parameters

    hello
    I need to write a script that compares oracle settings with the recommended values.
    most of the parameters are from v$parameter.
    What is the best way to handle this? Is it through creating a temp table and comparing strings between the 2 columns: Recomended and Existing?

    You have been asked to reinvent the wheel: Oracle has already done it for you.
    SELECT name, value, isdefault, ismodified, isadjusted
