Oracle passwords with numeric in first position

While googling I found many sites that said that having a numeric in the first position is not allow (our verify-password function does not check this) we have users who get a ora-00988 missing or invalid password when trying to change to a password with a numeric in the first pos... Any ideas if this is legal or not???

Just a caveat, while this is possible, it is probably not a great idea. Some applications will have problems if you try to provide a quoted password. It's generally a good idea to only use characters as the first value in the password.

  • Change the SYS & SYSTEM Oracle passwords with BRTOOLS, any concerns ?

    Hello, I would like to change both the SYS and SYSTEM Oracle passwords with BRTOOLS :
    (1) Can I use BRTOOLS to change them, or, I have to change them through SQLPlus ?
    (2) Any concerns, will this password change affect my SAP normal operations ?
    (3) Do I need to re-start the whole SAP UNIX system when I complete the password changing ?
    (4) Or changing these 2 passwords is totally an Oracle RDBMS issue, it will not have any effect on SAP ?

    But I failed. I was going to change the password of SYSTEM, but why SAP asked me to enter the password of SAPDEV ?
    Why ? OK, then I entered the SAPDEV password (it is the same as SYSTEM's old password).
    Then, I called SQLPlus and entered login name : SYSTEM, but why its correct password was still the old one, the new one failed. Why ?
    I just wanted to change the password of SYSTEM, why it was related to SAPDEV ?

  • SQL Dev converts MS SQL to Oracle - issue with numeric prefix column name

    Hi,
    We're working on migrating MS SQL data into Oracle 10g. An issue we encountered is that some of MS SQL's tables have column names with numeric prefix like 1Q07, 2Q07, ..., 4Q08, and so on. The converted model as well as script can be created. But one thing I notice is that SQL Dev appends a prefix "A" for column names with numeric prefix. This makes sense because Oracle does not allow a column with number. But somehow this does not work with only 4Q
    1Q04 => A1Q01
    2Q07 => A2Q07
    3Q08 => A3Q08
    4Q08 => 4Q08 ???
    Why? Any place in the tool where I can override this?
    Obviously I can manually modify column name 4Q08 to A4Q08 in the script. But by doing this when moving data, it would fail because tool has no knowledge of updated column name.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi ittichai,
    In <repository>.MIGRATION_TRANSFORMER body
    FUNCTION first_char_check(p_work NVARCHAR2) RETURN NVARCHAR2
    v_allowed := C_DISALLOWED_CHARS || '012356789_$';
    should be
    v_allowed := C_DISALLOWED_CHARS || '0123456789_$';
    If you make this change and convert the 4Q08 will be
    A4Q08 is expected, without any manual rename.

  • I cannot display oracle password with sysdba

    Hi all,
    I run "select PASSWORD from dba_users" and result is empty. I have 11g r2. Is there any way of display user password?
    Thanks,
    NY

    From the documentation for DBA_USERS:
    PASSWORD      VARCHAR2(30)           This column is deprecated in favor of the AUTHENTICATION_TYPE columnEven if you could display it (like in prior versions) it is a hashed value.

    We are talking about the Mail app, right? In the Mail menubar, click on Window and then Previous Recipients:
    That eliminates the previous recipients. If you are talking about the suggestions because there are 10 people with the name 'Steve' in your Contacts, then I do not know how to eliminate those unless you change the name slightly or wait until you type the last name or some other differentiator.

    particular individual, then it's protected as far as you trust that individual
    anyway!
    Those who are in the dba group on the server can get at the data
    in any case.
    I just don't see the point in trying to do what you're asking - unless
    I've missed something?
    BTW, you haven't mentioned OS or db version (see .sig).

    lovely sethi--
    When asking database related questions, please give other posters
    some clues, like OS (with version), version of Oracle being used and DDL.
    Other trivia such as CPU, RAM + Disk configuration might also be useful.
    The exact text and/or number of error messages is useful (!= "it didn't work!"). Thanks.
    Furthermore, as a courtesy to those who spend time analysing and attempting to help,
    please do not top post and do try to trim your replies!

    You are going to need to change the email address you use with your old ID. Once you have got access to your old account you will then log into both accounts at the same time on your Mac and transfer your data to a single account. We can do this later, but need you to get access to your old account first.

  • Using alter user to change oracle password for logged in web user on XE

    Hi All
    I'm building an app using the pl/sql web toolkit on XE (installed on Win XP Pro SP2). (I'm not using the APEX front-end).
    I'm using basic authentication and oracle database user accounts, and when a user registers for the first time I create them an oracle user account with dynamic sql, followed by some initial setup stuff, and they then log in with it.
    All fine so far.
    However I want to allow the user to change their oracle password as part of maintaining their user details. I've done this in the past using the web toolkit and Oracle 9i and it has worked fine using dynamic sql.
    Unfortunately I can't get the same thing to work in XE.
    For example, if I create the following procedure in the schema aligned to the DAD which holds my application and then run it from a browser (IE or Firefox) then the
    Browser and the db just hangs - not even an error message:
    CREATE OR REPLACE PROCEDURE ut
    AS
    v_stmt varchar2(300);
    BEGIN
    HTP.htmlOpen;
    HTP.headOpen;
    HTP.title ('User Test');
    HTP.headClose;
    HTP.bodyOpen;
    v_stmt := 'alter user "'||user||'" identified by "BERT"';
    htp.print(v_stmt);
    EXECUTE IMMEDIATE v_stmt;
    htp.print('Done');
    HTP.bodyClose;
    HTP.htmlClose;
    END;
    If I run the same statement in SQL*plus it's fine, and if I run the same proc for a different user then it's fine too.
    I'm sure it's something to do with trying to change the credentials of the currently logged in user, but I would at least have expected an error message.
    I'd be grateful for any ideas.
    Thanks
    Steve

    Hi g.myers
    Thanks for your response.
    Sorry, yes, bad turn of phrase there. It's not the entire db that hangs. The web browser (either IE or FF) hangs, and if I look at v$session at this point, I can see that the user STATUS=ACTIVE and the STATE=WAITING.
    I should also point out that I am using standard Oracle users as users of the application, (e.g. create a new user account called TESTER1). These users are then granted the appropriate privileges on the owning schema in order to run the app, access the tables etc.
    Therefore it is the user account (e.g. TESTER1) that is running the password change procedure that is owned by the SYS schema. (However again, this is the exact code and method that I've used in the past and it has worked fine).
    If I leave the browser hanging long enough, it will eventually return with the following error:
    Proxy Error
    The proxy server received an invalid response from an upstream server.
    The proxy server could not handle the request POST /h/hopapp.pwdmaint_do.
    Reason: Error reading from remote server
    cheers

    Could you please help me to resolve the problem ?
    Backgroud:
    We need to connect the external Oracle DB with JDBC connector, because BI need to connect to the target Oracle. If the JDBC connector suceed, BI will create a UD which use the datasource

  • How to pass username and password with the portal url

    i want to access portal from my web site. i have created username and password fields in my web page. when submited , my portal page should open. so how to pass username and password with the portal url.

    This is not straightforward; but it is doable.
    First tell us about your portal version; portal 10.1.4 has a slightly different method of doing it and the pre-10g portals were completely different animals.
    And if you are in AS Rel 2, then the most important document for you would probably be the following:
    [Creating Deployment Specific Pages| http://download-west.oracle.com/docs/cd/B14099_19/idmanage.1012/b14078/custom.htm#i1015535]
    You might want to use it in conjunction with some metalink notes about your portal version and such a login page.
    hope that helps!

    I am moving from CF 6.1 to CF 9 using Oracle 9i.  I get the following error when I use cfstoredproc to call a procedure in a package: [Macromedia][Oracle JDBC Driver]Numeric overflow.  In spite of throwing the error, the stored procedure seems to execute properly. Has anyone encountered this problem?

    I cannot consistently replicate the problem.  Values that work the first time may not work the second time.  The data is always entered in the database, but sometimes an error message is thrown regardless of the fact that the data was entered into the database. • Securing oracle Passwords using OIM

    Hello,
    First , i would like to say that i have no experience at all with OIM .
    I have tens of oracle production instances.
    Each instance has its own unique SYS/SYSTEM/Other users passwords.
    I would like to create a repository and save there all those hundreds of passwords - encrypted.
    I will also need to have an access to this repository and allow to decrypt password using a secure shell script.
    I would like to know if this can be done using OIM.
    Thanks

    This tool uses a simple file to stores the passwords encrypted. Well, I urge you to secure this file to make it non-accessible for others.

  • Problem when trying to refresh oracle screens with latest data

    hello experts,
    i have one problem,i want to refresh the oracle screen with the latest data from the data
    base.
    It is a two stage process.At first step one user will select a row from the screen and then he will press a button .
    now the second screen will appear and the detail of the employee will be displayed.
    First step has been completed and the data is coming in the second form via parameters and i can see the full information of the employee.
    Now i want to refresh the oracle form i.e. suppose if my dba has made any changes in the oracle table( EMP table) i want that after pressing the refresh button user can see the
    latest data from the database.
    in WHEN_BUTTON_PRESSED trigger i have written this codes.
    enter_query;
    execute_query;
    but they are not giving the expected result.
    And one more thing please suggest whether in the second form i should use database item
    or non database item.
    When i am using database item when i am trying to close second from one pop up is appearing
    and asking that whether i want to save the changes.
    please suggest how can i remove this message from my application.
    Regards
    Anutosh

    Hi,
    what data did you transfer via parameters to the second form ?
    how did you populate the datablock in the second form ?
    Typical solution would be:
    (For my example the block is both forms is named EMP, and is based on the table SCOTT.EMP)
    In Form 1, transfer the primary key-value of the current record to a global or parameter (will use global in my example):
    e.g. you have a WHEN-BUTTON-PRESSED-Trigger with the following code:
    <pre>
    :GLOBAL.EMPNO:=:EMP.EMPNO;
    CALL_FORM('FORM2');
    </pre>
    In Form 2, you have a WHEN-NEW-FORM-INSTANCE-Trigger with code:
    <pre>
    DEFAULT_VALUE('GLOBAL.EMPNO', NULL);
    IF :GLOBAL.EMPNO IS NOT NULL THEN
    GO_BLOCK('EMP');
    EXECUTE_QUERY;
    :GLOBAL.EMPNO:=NULL;
    END IF;
    </pre>
    On block EMP in Form 2 there is a PRE-QUERY-Trigger with following code:
    <pre>
    IF :GLOBAL.EMPNO IS NOT NULL THEN
    :EMP.EMPNO:=:GLOBAL.EMPNO;
    END IF;
    </pre>
    And at last, in your refresh-button would be the following code:
    <pre>
    :GLOBAL.EMPNO:=:EMP.EMPNO;
    GO_BLOCK('EMP');
    EXECUTE_QUERY;
    :GLOBAL.EMPNO:=NULL;
    </pre>
    Hope this helps

  • Uploading a file (.doc, .xls, .txt) into an Oracle table with BLOB column

    Hello All :
    I have been trying to figure out for a simple code I can use in my JSP to upload a file (of any format) into an Oracle table with a BLOB column type. I have gone through a lot of existing forums but couldnot find a simple code (that doesnot use Servlet, for eg.) to implement this piece.
    Thanks a lot for your help !!

    Hi.
    First of all to put a file into Oracle you need to get the array of bytes byte[] for that file. For this use for example FileInputStream.
    After you get the byte array try to use this code:
            try {
                Connection conn = myGetDBConnection();
                PreparedStatement pstmt = conn.prepareStatement("INSERT INTO table1 (content) VALUES(?)");
                byte[] content = myGetFileAsBytes();
                if (content != null) {
                    pstmt.setBinaryStream(0, new ByteArrayInputStream(content), content.length);
                pstmt.close();
                conn.close();
            } catch (Exception ex) {
                ex.printStackTrace();
            }or instead of using ByteArrayInputStream try pstmt.setBinaryStream(0, new FileInputStream(yourFile), getFileSize());Hope this will help...
