Oracle RAC performance Suddenly terminates on one of the two node cluster

I have a strange problem that happens frequently from time to time when My M400 Machine which is a part of two node RAC cluster goes down suddenly
I tried so many times to understand what's the cause behind that but when I read the logs there are so many messages related to the Oracle RAC which I don't have any experience or knowledge about so I hope I can find here any one who can explain to me these log messages knowing that they are always the same

you'll see something related to the voting disk
it suddenly becomes unavailable which causes the problem
thanks a lot for your help

  • Oracle RAC scalability(does it linearly scalable upto 20-30 nodes)

We are looking datastorage solution as Oracle -RAC for following performance requirement
Application is generating Resources which we want to store in database and provide searching on this resources.
Resource have 2 part one is data and another one is meta
Data contains textual/binray data like txt/html/doc/excel/pdf/image file etc
meta contains 30-40 different property telling something about data.
    Average resource size is 10K
Insertion speed required for such resource (Data + Meta ) 2Gbps(30K Resource/Second )
We want indexing also on data and meta.
We used single oracle database and created resource table which has 40 column for meta property and one column of blob type for data.
Performance achieved is 100Mbps insertion speed (on normal machine)
Now to go to 2Gbps we are thinking to use Oracle RAC to scale it up to 2Gbps Insertion speed.May be 20 Node is required to scale it upto 2Gbps.
Now my question is does Oracle RAC provide close to liener scalability upto 20-30 nodes or not.
Key requirement is to achieve insertion speed upto 2Gbps
High availability of oracle rac can be added advantage for us but key concern here is scalability not fault tolerance.

    > Now we are not using oracle partitioning because it
is slow when we define domain index (even index is
local and it is not sync real time ,index maintaines
is off) but it maintains pending queue and which
    slows down insertion process.
Hmm.. I'm using partitioning extensively for mass parallel inserts and it is a lot cleaner than individual tables (requiring dynamic SQL), and I have not seen any performance issues.
Can you elaborate on what issues you have seen?
    > Our main and key concern is to achieve insertion
speed of 2Gbps initialy and should be scalable upto
    10Gbbps.
May I ask what data you are collecting? This volume sounds a bit extreme - is something like collecting/sniffing UDP/TCP packets?
    > 1.If we have say I/O and network bandwidth available
then does oracle RAC will be capable to consume this
available I/O and network bandwidth by adding more
    nodes.
Yes. Remember that each cluster node has its own set of local platform resources - including a pipe to the shared storage (such as a I/O fibre channel).
What will cause an impact? Anything that will impact a single insert process will also impact that process across a cluster. E.g. two processes attempting to insert a row with the same PK - only one can succeed and thus one will be blocked by another. Bitmap indexing as a lock on a bitmap "slot" locks the index data for a number of rows - any of which can currently be updated by other processes. Etc.
How is this resolved in a cluster? As the processes are not local to the same platform, IPC cannot be used. Thus it means the Interconnect has to be used. This will be slower than IPC.
    > 2.We also heard from HP that Interconnect of node
will be botteleneck for us but my question is if we
look at above scenario where only insertion and
searching is there and no updation is there in system
then will RAC Interconnect become botteleneck just
    for hearbeat messanging.
The Interconnect need not be a bottleneck. Besides, the Interconnect is a fundamental cog in the share-everything cluster machine. It is not a "Bad Thing". So I question what HP is saying - for me to accept such advice, it needs to be backed up with hard technical facts.
If Interconnect is such an issue according to HP, just what do they recommend you use to scale your system with? Let me guess - some very expensive and very complex HP product? A superdome perhaps?
    > 3.Indexing time is much more even we create index for
one hour data at one shot, can we dedicate few nodes
    in RAC just for indexing.
That is what I'm doing - running up to a 100+ PQ process to do the index builds and rebuilds.
    > 4.When i use Create table as select command to
transfer same amount of data from one table to
another table then it takes only 30 seconds and when
i use direct path uploading then it takes 3 minute,
Make sure that you're performance comparisons are valid. What do you imply with "direct path uploading"?
Remember that CTAS is disk-to-disk I/O via the SGA buffer cache. There is no "client side" involved. Nothing external. Not even a PGA buffer area. No pushing data from a client process via IPC to an Oracle server process.
If your benchmark includes pushing data from a client, even from a PL/SQL process, that will be slower than a CTAS - always.
When dealing with such large volumes, the "traditional RDBMS" approach need to be carefully considered. Every single constraint, every single index, every single trigger, results in a tiny overhead that becomes a very huge overhead given the data volumes.
Data management also plays a crucial role. Unless you can manage the data, you cannot effectively insert such huge volumes, process those volumes and query those volumes.
I see RAC and partitioning and PL/SQL server side processing as crucial ingredients to make this work.

  • Mac mini server has suddenly stopped seeing one or the other bluetooth devices! Batteries have been changed and they will connect to an older Mac mini. Server will now only see one or the other but not both.

My Mac mini server has suddenly stopped seeing one or the other bluetooth devices, either the wireless keyboard or the mouse( both apple products) have tried new batteries, at first it was the mouse that stopped responding, but upon rebooting the computer now the keyboard will not respond and the mouse works. Both work fine on an older Mac mini that I hooked back up to check.

There is absolutely no reason why they should not bothe be able to connect to your WiFi network. The easiest place to start would be to reboot your router. Unplug it for about 30 seconds and then plug it back in again. I would also restart both the iPad and the iPhone.

  • Report with two Command is empty if one of the two commands returns no data

    Hi all,
I have a report with two Commands not linked together.
If ONLY one of the two Commands returns no data, the full report is empty (although the other Command returns data).
I'm using Crystal Report 2008 and the CRJ 12.2.205
    Have an idea?

    Hi Ted,
how can I solve the problem, please? It is important.
If I can help yourself, the problem is appeared in many reports since I updated the library (the old library version 11.8.4.1094 works fine with all). I'm waiting for your answer, please.
    Thank you very much.

    1. Don't confuse "Apple ID" with iTunes Account ID.  You can have many Apple IDs but only one iTunes account active at a time.
    2. If you "changed" your iTunes account ID, you actually have 2 accounts - one under the old name plus the new name.
    3. You can't merge the accounts - they remain separate.  Apps purcahsed under the old account name will update ONLY WHEN THE PHONE IS SIGNED IN TO THE OLD ACCOUNT NAME  and visa versa.
    4. Likewise, you can sync only the apps, music, media purchased under the account the phone AND iTunes are signed in to.

I opened it up and panicked and thankfully I guess I had a backup of the other library in my spouses phone... but mine is still gone. I don't have them saved to my computer... the pictures are important and I really really need them back.  Is there a way for me to get the pictures back from what I believed at the time was a smart way to backup when i made a duplicate of that main mac file to my google drive? The best way to let me know is my email... [email protected]  I am really relying on you guys if there is a way?

  • ZFS mirror on root, one of the two devices appears offline

    Hello everybody,
I'm a new Archlinux user. I've managed to install it on a pool (called RAID1) composed of two LUKS encrypted devices (/dev/mapper/HD3 and /dev/mapper/HD10).
    This is the pool:
    # zpool status
    pool: RAID1
    state: ONLINE
    scan: resilvered 11.4M in 0h0m with 0 errors on Mon Jan 13 07:41:13 2014
    config:
    NAME STATE READ WRITE CKSUM
    RAID1 ONLINE 0 0 0
    mirror-0 ONLINE 0 0 0
    HD10 ONLINE 0 0 0
    HD3 ONLINE 0 0 0
    errors: No known data errors
I wrote a custom hook, run before the zfs hook, which opens a small (5MB) LUKS image (/etc/keys.img) asking for its key, and mounts it under /keys. Then, for each device in /etc/earlycrypttab, it opens the device taking the respective keyfile from /keys.
Here is the code, if it could help debug the problem. Feel free to use it, if it might be useful to you. Sorry if it's not too good.
    http://pastebin.com/PAbaTUcq   /etc/earlycrypttab
    http://pastebin.com/JULEdHx9   /usr/lib/initcpio/hooks/customcrypt
    http://pastebin.com/Ew44anvY   /usr/lib/initcpio/install/customcrypt
Now, the problem is this: for some reason, after booting, HD3 is shown as offline and the pool is shown as DEGRADED. /dev/mapper/HD3 is open and working, though. Running a simple
    # zpool online RAID1 HD3
    fixes the pool.
I know for sure that after the customcrypt hook is run, that LUKS device is open. I've managed to get into ash just after the customcrypt hook, and the LUKS device is open, but
    # zpool list
keeps saying that HD3 is offline.
Anyway, if (still inside ash, after the customcrypt hook and before the zfs hook) I run
    # zpool export RAID1
    # zpool import
zpool finds both devices as online.
I first thought it could be a problem of the /etc/zfs/zpool.cache file. I tried recreating it and recreating the initram (with mkinitcpio -p linux), but still no luck.
Do you have any idea about what could be the problem?
Thank you very much for your time!

@stefa : Did you get any resolution on this?  I ran into the exact same problem two days ago and I can't seem to find the "right" fix.  I'm using a zfs mirror on top of luks and figured it was due to the luks device not being online but after reading your post... I'm not so sure.
Post boot I'm able to offline the missing device and online it without issue.  My only concern is why isn't this coming up with both disks at the time of import and will it boot if the offline drive is the only one of the two active at the time of boot?  I setup the mirror so I could have a drive fail and still boot...
@esko: I've got zfs set to auto-mount and the mount points are all working properly.

At home I have two wifi networks , I try to use one of them depending on their strength of signal, can I not save  both their passwords on Apple TV , so that I can switch to one of the two wifi networks as required
Also the passwords are long and cumbersome to type every time on the apple  TV remote, what is the alternative if I cannot store them on the memory of the Apple TV

Is it possible that you are using the same password for the old O2 Study and newer O2 Apple Base Station networks?
If so, Keychain Access is storing the old information about the old network and may be associating it with your AirPort Extreme settings based on the BSSID that William has mentioned.
If that's the case, open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > KeyChain Access and look for a listing with the old network name. Delete this entry. You may need to power down both the computer and the AirPort Extreme and restart them.

There are a few different toolbars and plugins which are not yet compatible with Firefox 5 including Google, avast and AVG ([http://www.canadiancontent.net/commtr/firefox-rather-soon-released_1093.html source]). I bet it's going to take a day or two for updates to be released.

This error means that when TimesTen is processing this statement and asks the operating sysstem for the official hostname of the local node the O/S is returning somethign different to 'node1' or 'node2'.
it may be that you have incorrectly set the hostname to inculue a DNS domain (e.g. node1.xxx.yy.zzz).

  • Qosmio X300 - One of the two fans rattles abnormally

This started about two weeks ago.
One of the two fans under the laptop rattles abnormally. If I tilt the laptop for a while the rattling stops... but it's embarassing in the very least to have to do that on such an advanced laptop.
Sometimes the rattling stops when the fan's been running a while...
So anyone else had this issue? I've got next business day on-site support but would need to take a day off work if I want them to come out so am tryin to avoid that.
Aanyone had the issue? If so how was it addressed?

right... Toshiba sent someone out today.... and guess what... Toshiba managed to mess the whole thing up!
The way support works (well my understanding of ti following the disaster today) is as follows:
    1) customer logs call with Toshiba
    2) Toshiba order parts necessary and contact a support company that is not actually a part of Toshiba, but is contracted to carry out support
    3) support company replaces parts as necessary
so, i 1) called Toshiba they told me they'd send someone over with 2 cooling fans, 2) they ordered two thermal conductors for the graphics boards (NOT FANS, JUST THE METAL PLATES!!!), 3) support guy came, when i told him what the problem was he was surprised Toshiba gave him thermal conductors and not fans. so we called Toshiba and logged a new call
i had to call Toshiba and log a new call... however, i insisted the operator note in the call records that this is the second time i am calling for the same issue as the first time they gave the poor support guy the wrong parts. now my contract only supports next business day on site visit.... as it's not practical for me to take this laptop with me to work i took a day off to be at home.....
Now that means i'll have to do it again,... so i think, hang on, Toshiba offer 24/7 on site support, so i'll ask them if, as it was their fault, they'll send someone over the weekend. "it's not within our power to do that" toshiba said "you'll have to contact the engineers company and ask them if they'll do it"... i didn't make the mistake, why should i ask?
The engineer didn't make the mistake, so why should his company have to be generous and give me a free day on site on a weekend?
Toshiba made the mistake, they should pay the engineers company to have him back on a weekend.
that is what i shall be arguing on the phone tomorrow (to Toshiba and not the engineering company) when the engineer calls up and no doubt says Toshiba are only paying for me to have a monday to friday service.
A customer should not have to worry about who Toshiba award their contracts to.
Oh, and on the matter of the fans themselves, the engineer took them out, he could find nothing inside... i tapped the fans and am very sure one of them is a lil loose although the engineer didn't think tha should be causing the level of noise he heard. however, he stood there and did hear the awful noice it was making, as if repeatedly scraping against something as the blades rushed past.
So... more updates as soon as possible... but Toshiba really screwed this one up and it's cost me a day of my annual leave... thanks Toshiba.

  • RCA for Oracle RAC Performance Issue

    Hi DBAs,
I have setup a 2 node Oracle RAC 10.2.0.3 on Linux 4.5 (64 bit) with 16 GB memory and 4 dual core CPUs each. The database is serving a web application but unfortunately the system is at its knees. The performance is terrible. The storage is a EMC SAN but ASM is not implemented with a fear to further degrade the performance or not to complicate the system further.
I am seeking the expert advises from some GURUs from this forums to formulate the action plan to do the root cause analysis to the system and database. Please advise me what tools I can use to gather the information about the Root Cause. AWR Report is not very helpful. The system stats with top, vmstat, iostat only show the high resource usage but difficult to find the reason. OEM has configured and very frequently report all kind of high wait events.
How I can use effectively find Network bottle necks (netstat command which need to be really helpful to understand).
How I can see the system I/O (iostats) which can provide me some useful information. I don't understand what sould be the baseline or optimal values to compare the I/O activities.
I am seeking help and advised to diagnose the issue. I also want to represent this issue as a case study.
    Thanks
    -Samar-

First of all, RAC is mainly suited for OLTP applications.
Secondly, if your application is unscalable (it doesn't use bind variables and no SQL statements have been tuned and/or it has been ported from Sukkelserver 200<whatever>) running it against RAC will make things worse.
Thirdly: RAC uses a chatty Interconnect. If you didn't configure the Interconnect properly,and/or are using slow Network cards (1 Gb is mandatory), and/or you are not using a 9k MTU on your 1 Gb NIC, this again will make things worse.
You can't install RAC 'out of the box'. It won't perform! PERIOD.
Fourthly: you might suffer from your 'application' connecting and disconnecting for every individual SQL statement and/or commit every individual INSERT or UPDATE.
    You need to address this.
Using ADDM and/or AWR is compulsory for analysing the problem, and/or having read Cary Millsaps book on Optimizing Oracle performance is compulsory.
You won't come anywhere without AWR and OS statistics will not provide any clue.
Because, paraphrasing William Jefferson Clinton, former president of the US of A:
    It's the application, stupid.
99 out of 100 cases. Trust me. All developers I know currently are 100 percent clueless.
That said, if you can't be bothered to post the top 5 AWR events, and you aren't up to using AWR reports, maybe you should hire a consultant who can.

  • Oracle RAC performance

    Hello all,
I have a 3 node oracle RAC. Each server has 2 intel quad core processors. I was asked to extend the RAC to 5 nodes to increase the processing power. I was told that Intel 6 core processors are in the market. So I was looking at the following options and need your input/expertise or suggestions on the following options.
Option 1: Add 2 more nodes with 2 quad core processors to the existing 3 node RAC. so total cores available to process the load will be 40 cores.
Option 2: completely replace all the above 5 nodes(in option 1) with 4 nodes - each with 2 * 6 core processors. total cores available are 48 core.
option 2 will give have 1 less server to maintain.
will the performance on option 2 be better than option 1? Any there any white papers or documentation to help me take a decision as to which option i should go?
    Thanks in advance.
    Raj

    hi
I would also first try to tune the database. However it demands some professional skills. There are many areas of tuning.
For example, if your storage subsystem runs slowly (often a bottleneck), then you will not benefit from and node's scaling!
Upgrading hardware is the last thing to do, as it is costly.
If you have a budget, then run for it, buy new "toys", why not, but make sure you hit the performance issue lest you spent money with no improvement...brr
So start with storage, if disks are old e.g. 10k RPM replace them with new 15k RPM, or SSD even.
Run AWR, see "Top 5 events", find the slowest subsystem, if this is I/O then invest in disks, if CPU then CPU, etc.
Replacing old hardware (scale-up) have this benefit, that you don't have to buy all components and install all software from the scratch (OS, add nodes).
Also, however it is not forbidden, but it's been said by Oracle, nodes should have similar performance.
Next thing is that adding more than 3 nodes to the RAC cluster , probably will not improve the overall performance in a linear way, and is more expensive.
My suggestion is to scale-up after inspecting and finding the bottleneck of the cluster performance.
    Hope this helps,
