Oracle Upgrade with no or minimum downtime.

Hi DBAs,
I have setup the R12 with 10g (10.2.0.3) on RHEL 5.2 - 1 apps node with 2 node RAC. The database is configured with physical standby (2 Node RAC Dataguard). I want to upgrade the database to version 10.2.0.4 and also want to apply the April 2009 CPU patch. I am also using ASM.
Please suggest any way that I can upgrade any one database and in the mean time the other one is avaialble for application and then I can upgrade the other. And after upgrade how to sync both.
Thanks

  • Oracle upgrade with DataGuard

    Hello Experts,
    We have to upgrade oracle db from 10.2.0.2 to 11g.
    While upgrading to PRD system there is DR system also, which uses DataGuard for archive update on DR system.
    I would like to know that we need to take special care for DataGuard or DBUA will take care of DataGuard mechanism?
    Thanks in advance.
    Regards,
    Yogesh

    Hi Yogesh,
    in a SAP environment it is even more specific than the standard oracle upgrade guide (because of the compatible parameter and SAP scripts).
    We discussed this already in this thread: Upgrade to Oracle 11G in standby environment

  • 12.1.0.3 Agent Upgrade shows agent Not Upgradable with Oracle Home Property Missing

    I have completed upgrading my Enterprise Manager OMS from 12.1.0.1 to 12.1.0.3 and am not in the process of upgrading the agents. Several agents show agent as not upgradable with error Oracle Home Property Missing and I am having problems trying to resolve that. In addition to the information in Chapter 5 of the upgrade guide I have found Metalink notes 1564380.1 & 1576084.1 and am trying to follow them.
    Looking at the targets.xml on one machine I find -
    <Target TYPE="oracle_home" NAME="cannon-columbo_cluster_home" IDENTIFIER="TARGET_GUID=615AE33355A4D531DBFC35831C2A2952">
    <Target TYPE="oracle_home" NAME="mothpa.ucdavis.edu_mothpa1_oracle_database_home" IDENTIFIER="TARGET_GUID=DFE64CFD805C3C3F88E20EE0E74E556F">

    and following the notes I use emctl and run runCollection -
    ./emctl control agent runCollection mothpa.ucdavis.edu_mothpa1_oracle_database_home:oracle_home oracle_home_config

    I have found some information pertaining to promoting targets but I don't understand that very well, essentially how to know if a target needs to be promoted. One note suggested running repvfy which I need to do. I will download it and run it to see if that helps but at the moment I am puzzled and seeking assistance. Any suggestions gratefully appreciated.
    Thank you.

    I will do so, thank you.

  • Upgrades with Oracle Tools are really Amazing

    I always hate upgrade with JDev!!!
    Oracle's Webbeans are not fine enough to be used in professional applications so Developers have to custom Oracle WebBeans.
    But when a new release of JDev come out, we have to use it because it fix some bugs but then we are up with some others bugs and wait for the next release.
    Oracle will give us jobs for years. Thank you Larry!!!!!
    For example with the old method populateform, I could add a field to a form and set a cssclass to it, now it seems to be impossible.
    I tried the following code and it doesn't run
    HTMLFormField hffChamp = new HTMLFormField(new HTMLTextElement(rField.getPromptText()), new HTMLTextElement(sOutput));
    hffChamp.setCSSClassName(rField.getCSSClassName());
    aForm.addFieldElement(hffChamp);
    It seems impossible to set a cssclass to an HTMLFormField.
    See public HTMLTableCell(HTMLElement elem, String sClass), ...
    Tomorrow is another day....

    Few years later, same problems... I guess we are not shouting, but if you please read our posts, we would appreciate just one small thing:
    Please leave any message on the topic that you at least read about the problem we have. Just say something like: "OK I read this but do not know the answer at this time, thank you for your patience". And you do not need to do it for all posts. There are some people there trying to solve problem for months, and are reposting the same thing many times.
    By being ignorant, you are getting nothing. I will not be wrong if I say that now I understand why hi-tech jobs are going overseas. We are to be blamed for 'bad' economy
    We, at Wash U, are considering to go with other tools.

  • ERP 6.0 EHP4 SR1 Upgrade Unix Oracle issue with /STARTUP

    We are in the process of doing an ERP 6.0 EHP4 SR1 Upgrade Unix Oracle Upgrade.  We have ran into a problem running the /STARTUP, we are using the Upgrade Master DVD 51036889 as well as have down loaded it from service market place and jce_policy-1_5_0.zip as well as the one on SAP service market place.  When we execute the command   /STARTUP jce_policy_zip=jce_policy-1_5_0.zip the job starts and runs down to where the controller for port 4241 starts and then hangs.  If we control C out and go to the /usr/sap/SID/upg and run /STARTUP  it runs all the way through setting up both 4241 controller and 4239 controller, we then go to the web browser and launch the Gui => logon as administrator => upgrade roadmap screen pops up it is set on the initialization phase we hit next and nothing happens after that, we don't get the ABAP tab or the progress bar.  We would appreciate any help.

    Hi Jerry,
    The first time you run STARTUP its run from the NW7 EHP1 SR1 DVD. Just wanted to confirm that your running it from this DVD. This extracts and setups your /usr/sap/<SID>/upg directory. It sounds like this directory hasn't been setup correctly which is why your not seeing anything when you login to the GUI.
    Can you confirm that you got your JCE files from SWDC -> SAP Cryptograpic Software ?
    OSS Note - 1240081

    I had to use the JCE file from here to get my upgrade to work. What OS are you on?
    Hope this helps.

  • Oracle Upgrade --  Pre-Upgrade 10.2.0.4 to 11.2.0.1

    Hello,
    I want to do an Oracle Upgrade to version 11.2g!
    At this point I did some things (in Windows Server 2003 X64):
    1-) Install Oracle 10.2.0.1 (DVD Media);
    2-) Installation of Oracle patchset 10.2.0.4 (note 871735);
    3-) Installation of interim / last generics patch (note 1137346);
    4-) Installation of SAP ECC 6.0 SR3 by SAPInst
    5-) After SAP installation I did all the corrections in Oracle parameters as it mentioned in note 830576.
    As you see above, all the SAP system was well installed!
    But now I want to do the Oracle Upgrade process to the last version, Oracle DB 11.2g  (11.2.0.1)... and so I´m following the Upgrade guide "Upgrade to Oracle Database 11g Release 2 (11.2) Windows.pdf" with some SAP notes for Upgrade process.
    So I´m at this point in planning chapter where is recommended to check so things in actual database, one of this checks are running some SQL-scripts to perform an Oracle database upgrade with DBUA to release 11.2 (as mentioned in note 1431793 - Oracle 11.2.0: Upgrade Scripts)
    I ran two Pre-Scripts, the @pre_upgrade_status.sql and @pre_upgrade_tasks.sql but both outputs showed some warnings and they are worrying me... so what I ask to you is some kind of help in analyse of them and tell me if this issues are relevant for the upgrading process and if so, what you recommend me to do to correct their!
    Next I will post here this two log scripts... they are long!!!

  • Oracle Upgrade from 10g to 11g [BRANCHED BY MODERATOR]

    Hi Deepak/Folks,
    Another question that I have is that while doing the Oracle Upgrade on an EP server, the patches were not installed properly and I had to shut down the Patches installation after it did not do anything for a while.
    Now when I try to install the patches it fails telling me that the Installed patches cannot be verified, I had written to SAP and they told me to follow the

    This has also not helped in anyway.

    I tried to follow the instructions in note 1269960, but the enhancement spot
    CLASSIFICATION_TOOL was already active. I activated it again and reran the phase
    but got the same error. Also, I couldn't implement the note using SNOTE because it is
    the middle of the upgrade process.
    I also found the following long text in ST22
    "Internal error during syntax check: ("//bas/710_REL/src/krn/gen/scsymb.c#11"

    The internal system error cannot be fixed by ABAP means only."
    I am on a 64 bit System with CentOS Linux. 8 GB RAM, 250 GB HD with 20 GB free space.
    So far, I could not find any information on this. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Victor

    Hi Victor,
    Go to SM37 and put in the username as DDIC and see the job log.
    Also check  Sm50 and see whether you have BTC processes available.
    Last but not the least check your filesystem space  usage too.

  • Oracle upgrade from 10.1.0.4 to 10.2.0.3

    Hi,
    OS:RHEL3
    We are in process of moving database to other machine (same name, same config) and upgrading db from 10.1.0.4 to 10.2.0.3. We forgot to copy home.
    Can we start db from 10.2.0.3 and invoke dbua for upgrade?
    or do i need to install 10.1.0.4 again and startup db and invoke dbua.
    I started db in upgrade mode from 10.2.0.3 binaries and tried invoking dbua. It got "table does not exists error".
    If i start db normally under 10.2.0.3 home and try upgrade with dbua will this work?
    Thanks,
    Anil

    Hi,
    DBUA upgrades the old database to new database by getting information from existing old database. These informations are stored in oratab file. Moreover oracle need the old database to start while performing upgradation. Starting of old database is not possible till you have its oracle home installed. So you are required to have older version oracle home installed before you carry out installation.
    The older version can be new installation or old installation copy.

  • How to upgrade (with clean install) a OEL4 server to OL5 on a live system

    My problem is that I cannot find any meaningful information on how to perform a OL upgrade on a live system with a running database.
    The system is running OEL 4.9 (migrated from RHEL 4 to OEL) and I want to upgrade it to OL 5.7 (wanted to use 6.1 but that is not yet certified for 11.2)
    I know that using Anaconda's upgrade is not supported so I guess I will have to use a clean install. (the system is full of legacy rpm's and old drivers that where needed in previous 4.x releases and dependencies that I wouldn't want to upgrade).
    So I want to do a clean install of 5.7 on the server, but what is the process? There are 3 LVs running 1 for the OS (with partitions for /, /boot, /tmp, /usr, /var and /home )
    1 for the Oracle software / data files and 1 for exports / archive logs and such.
    If I do a clean install on the OS LV (after taking a backup of everything) will I be able to reuse the existing setup of Oracle software on the 2nd logical volume? create the oracle user with the same uid/gid, running root.sh, etc.. Will it start and be able to mount/open the database ? (I am assuming the need to rebuild the installation) There is also a home for 11.2 middleware web-tier utilities (for APEX).
    I have been searching in vain for some guides / insight into what the correct procedures are for upgrading the OEL4 to OL5 (or OL6 if it gets certified in the next few months).
    Any help appreciated.
    Oli

    My problem is that I cannot find any meaningful information on how to perform a OL upgrade on a live system with a running database.Firstly, it is good to know your system is running satisfactorily.
    After taking a full backup (and checking that the backup is good!), you must shutdown the RDBMS instances.
    1) Reboot from the distribution media.
    2) Choose a full install; you do not want to upgrade.
    3) Be very careful to click on the checkbox to "use custom setup" so that you will get a display of the current storage setup.
    4) In the Anaconda Disk Druid screen, edit the displayed LVMs to use their old mount points.
    5) Make absolutely certain that the checkbox to reformat the LVMs for your database setup are clear, not checked.
    6) Do install the default RPM package selection; the OL distro is configured to install the necessary prerequisites for an RDBMS setup.
    7) After the installation completes, be sure to install the "oracle-validated" RPM package to do the necessary tuning.
    8) Add back all the user accounts.
    9) Move on to bringing up the RDBMS.
    Looks scary, and is, but can be done. Practice installing this way before doing it for real -- you do want to be familiar with each installation step and to realize where you are along the process.

  • Oracle Upgrade 8.1.7.4 to 10g in Red hat linux

    Dear All,
    We are planning to upgrade our oracle database from 8i to 10g along with the Redhat linux upgrade from  2.4.9-e 27 ent to Red Hat Linux 5. In my study and also from Installation guides and oracle upgrade guides I made sure that its possible to upgrade our database from 8.1.7.4.
    So I have planned the below options to do the same and not sure about the possibilities. If anyone have thoughts and idea on the same please suggest me.
    We dont have plan to migrate the development hardware and the sap version is 4.7E
    Option 1: Upgrade the Linux to 5 and then upgrading the database to 10g usign upgrade assistant tool
    Option 2: Export the database using sapinst tool and then crashing the server. Installing linux5 and importing the database using sapinst tool.(I am aware this is not a good idea since there is no migration in hardware but it will be helpful in production since we are migrating the production system).
    Option 3: Performing DBUA assistant in development and sapinst method in production.(helpful in disaster recovery)
    Could you please suggest on the same?
    My query is that.
    If i am performing oracle export from 8.1.7.4 and if i am import the same in oracle 10g using the sapinst tool. Will this work? or it will create a problem in table level. I am looking for answers for this Question. Kindly explain me on this.

  • Apply Patches on Oracle Database with Logical Standby Database

    Here I am:
    I got a primary database with a logical standby database running Oracle 11g. I got two client applications, one is the production site pointing to the primary one, another one is just a backup site pointing to the logical one.Things will only be written into the primary database every mid night and client applications can only query the database but not add, update nor delete.And now, I want to apply the latest patch on both of my databases. I am also the DNS administrator, I can make the name server pointing to the backup site instead of the production one.I want to firstly apply the patch on the logical one, and then the physical one.
    I found some reference which explains how to apply patches by adopting "Rolling Upgrade Method". however, I want to avoid doing any "switch over" mentioned in the reference because I can make use of name server. Can I just apply patches as the following way?
    1)Stop SQL apply
    2)Apply patches on logical standby database
    3)let the name server point to the backup site
    4)Apply patches on the primary database
    5)Start SQL apply
    6)Let the name server point back to the production site
    Thanks in advance.
