  • Writing data to Microsoft SQL Server/Database

    Hi All
    I have written a program in LV ver 6.1 that carries out various functional tests and at each test gathers 3 data values. At the moment the data is gathered at each stage of the test and written in a concatenated string to a file that was opened at the start of the test routine. What I need to do is output the data such that it is compatable with SQL server (presumably in some form of table?). I have read previous posts but they recommed the ni database toolkit, which I do not have. Should I be using the XML vi to take the string of data or use the active x vi? I have read in other posts that you can manage without the ni database toolkit but would need to program a database structure. My knowledge of database development is nil and I wondered if there was a vi that could be used that would create tables that could be directly interpreted by MS SQL?
    Labview Version 8.5
    Labview Version 8.6
    Labview Version 2013

    I'm having trouble understanding exactly what you're doing, but I will try to explain a few things:
    Ideally code written for database connectivity should not be included in my Labview code or problems could occur if my client changed his servers , database structure etc.
    The code can be yours. If you do write it, just make sure to create subVIs, so that if the DB structure does change (something which is rare), you will only need to change the code inside the subVIs.
    Microsoft SQL server is an intermediate piece of software that allows my Labview code to access the database without actually 'seeing' it. With my client using SQL server they can modify the way my Labview code sends data to their database if they decide to change their servers, database structure etc.
    SQL Server is the DB management system. It holds all the tables, queries, etc. and is responsible for actually managing the DB itself.
    What Dennis suggested was that the DB guy will write something known as a "stored procedure" and that you will call it.
    In such a case, if the DB guy wanted to change something, he could just change the stored procedure and (if the change does not affect the interface), you do not have to change or rebuild your program. This is equivalent to the subVIs I described earlier, except in this case, the function is inside the DB itself.
    Another version of this is creating a table with SQL commands and assigning a name for each command. You load the SQL command from the table by name and execute it. This allows for changing the SQL command inside the DB without changing your application.
    ADO connectivity is used and the connection string is best located in the windows registry file. Presumably this option would give my client the most flexiblity? Is this the same thing as the .udl file?
    Basically, the scheme is like this:
    DB <-> DBMS <-> ODBC <-> ADO <-> Your Application
    This may not be perfectly accurate, but the concept is basically this - in Windows, you talk to ANY database from ANY program using the same interface - you call ADO functions which will be responsible for getting to the DB you want and you use SQL to issue the commands, since the basic SQL commands are supported by all DBs.
    To identify the DB, you use a connection string. This connection string can have all the data in it or it can point to an existing file (UDL or DSN) which holds the data pointing to the DB. Dennis suggested that when developing on your machine, you will use a file pointing to a local DB, but when deploying you will use a file of the same name which will point to the real DB. Your program will always go to the file and from there it will know which DB to go to.
    The only time when this should really matter to the client is during configuration (for example, if the DB was moved to a different machine). All the client needs to do is edit the UDL file to point at the new location of the DB.
    Again, the advantage of all this is that this is not part of your code and is done by programs which are built to handle it.
    It is more efficient to use the Parameterized database technique such as the example given in the 'logging example parameterized'
    I don't know how much this efficiency will be relevant in the speeds you need.
    In any case, as I said, my own preference is to create functional subVIs - for example, a VI which will accept data in my format and will be responsible internally for converting that data and putting it into the necessary tables.
    I have sent my client an outline of the data to be saved on their database, which at the moment comprises of 3 tables, the first has things like operators name, date, time, serial number etc ( 7 records, 3 fields) the second table has test reference (11 tests in total) with items such as fuel flow, fuel temp etc (11 records, 5 fields), Last table has 1 record and 6 fields. Unlike the Labview example each stage of the test can take up to 4 minutes to complete and if successfull the program moves on to the next stage of the test, saving the test results and if a PASS or FAIL occurred. The question I have is would it more efficient to save the results at the end of all of the tests or shold I connect to their database and save results as the tests progress?
    I can't say I understand this, but my suggestion would be to let the client decide in what format they want the data, since they're the ones who want it. Work with the DB guy to decide exactly what data you need to put into the DB and where and then you can decide exactly which functions you need. As said, you might want to let the DB guy write some stored procedures which you can use to input the data.
    Unless it's a large amount of data, writing to a DB is usually fairly quick (under a second). If it is relevant, my suggestion would be to write after each phase.
    In any case, I suggest you go through some real DB tutorials (not LV related) and see if you can wrap your head about it. I know I don't particularly like designing DBs (or PID) any more than you do, but it's a skill worth having, and in some places, a DB makes things easy and practical.
    Try to take over the world!

  • How to replicate data from MS SQL Server  to Oracle

    Hi,
    Can someone please help me on how to replicate data from MS SQL Server to Oracle 8i database.

    Dear,
    I'm a student.
    I do simple replication on Oracle 8.0.5 successfully. (one master site and one snapshot site). I only use the SQL*Plus and Schema Manager to do.
    But when I do advance replication (multimaster replication) I meet many problem. So I don't get the result.
    Do you show me the technology to do that ?
    Thanks !

  • TRANSFER DATA FROM MS-SQL SERVER TO ORACLE

    hello everybody
    can anyone tell me how 2 transfer or convert data from ms-sql server to oracle
    is there any utility
    if yes let me know .
    thanks in advance

    There are various options depending on how much data we're talking about, where you want the program logic, whether it's a one-time migration, etc.
    Among the options
    - Use SQL Server's DTS
    - BCP the data from SQL Server into flat files and use SQL*Loader to load it
    - Create a database link using Heterogeneous Services and Generic Connectivity to extract data from SQL Server
    - Use the Oracle Migration Workbench, which is now integrated into SQL Developer
    - Use an ETL tool like Oracle Warehouse Builder

  • Export data from MS sql server table to an oracle table

    I need to move data from a sql server table to an oracle table and when ever the sql server table is updated it needs to automatically update the oracle table. Is there procedure to do this or do I migrate the data once and set up a trigger on the sql server table to update the oracle table? If the trigger is the answer how do I do that?

    You might want to check out Oracle's heterogeneous services functionality if you haven't done so already. Here are a few links:

    http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/server.102/b14232/majfeat.htm#sthref74
    Also, consulting the Oracle streams manual may be helpful -- particularly Chapter 5.

    Hi,
    There are various differences between the two.
    1. SQL Server is only Windows, but Oracle runs on almost all Platforms.
    2. You can have multiple databases in SQL Server, but Oracle provides you only one database per instance.Given that the very term 'database' has s different meaning in the two products, this "difference" is absolutely meaningless.
    3. SQL Server provides T-SQL for writing programs, whereas Oracle provides PL/SQLWhich means what? Both products have a procedural programming language. They named them differently, and the languages are not interchangeable. Means nothing in comparing the features/strengths/weaknesses/suitability to purpose.
    4. Backup types in both are the same. (Except Oracle provides an additional backup called Logical Backup.)You make that sound like "Logical Backup" is something more than it is. It is nothing more than an export of the data and metadata. Many experts don't even consider it a backup. I'm sure SQL Server provides the same functionality though they probably call it by some other name.
    5. Both provide High Availability.Well, I guess they both have a suite of features they refer to as "High Availability". But what does that really mean? The devil is in the details. Remember, the two products don't even agree on what constitutes a "database".
    6. Both come in various distributions.???

    If you are going for an Implementation, you can try SQL Server Express Edition and Oracle XE which are free to use.
    Then you can choose whichever is comfortable for your needs.

  • INSERTING DATA INTO A SQL SERVER 2005 TABLE, WHICH HAS A IDENTITY COLUMN

    Hi All,
    I have to insert the data into a SQL SERVER 2005 Database table.
    I am able to insert the data into a normal SQL Server table.
    When I am trying to insert the data into a SQL Server table, which has a identity column (i.e. auto increment column in Oracle) I am getting error saying that can't insert value explicitly when IDENTITY_INSERT is set to OFF.
    Had anybody tried this??
    There are some SRs on this issue, Oracle agreed that it is a bug. I am wondering if there is any workaround from any one of you (refer Insert in MS-SQL database table with IDENTITY COLUMN
    Thanks
    V Kumar

    Even I had raised a SR on this in October 2008. But didn't get any solution for a long time, finally I had removed the identity column from the table. I can't to that now :).
    I am using 10.1.3.3.0 and MS SQL SERVER 2005, They said it is working for MS SQL SERVER TABLE, if the identity column is not a primary key and asked me to refer to note 744735.1.
    I had followed that note, but still it is not working for me.
    But my requirement is it should work for a MS SQL SERVER 2005 table, which has identity column as primary key.

  • Manipulate data of a SQL SERVER 2000 database

    Problem:
    I need to manipulate data of a SQL SERVER 2000 database that it’s installed in a Windows
    from an oracle 8.1.7 database that is installed in a red hat linux server.
    This access has to be made in a procedure created in this Oracle instance.
    The Solution’s Environment:
    - oracle 8.1.7 database - red hat linux server - ORCL INSTANCE
    - SQL SERVER 2000 version 5.0 database - Windows server - SQLSERV INSTANCE
    - Oracle 8.1.7 database - windows 2000 professional server - HSDB INSTANCE
    We did the following steps:
    1) We installed an oracle database 8.1.7 in the windows 2000 professional.
    The name of this instance is HSDB.
    2) We configured the HSODBC resource in this HSDB instance so as to access the SQLSERVER database.
    3) It was created a database link in the ORCL instance (LINUX) so as to access the oracle HSDB instance
    4) It was created a procedure in the ORCL instance that insert data into the SQLSERVER database using the database link.
    This procedure pass through the following instances:
    ORCL Instance (database link) => HSDB Instance (HS Resource) => SQLSERV Instance
    5) When I execute this simple procedure of the ORCL Instance, the process takes a long time. Although if I run this insert on a SQL Plus, the transaction ends fast. Why it’s happening?
    PROCEDURE PRC_TESTE(P_CD_CMC7 IN VARCHAR2) IS
    BEGIN
    BEGIN
    INSERT INTO VSolicitacaoRetirada@MSSQLDB
    ("CMC7")

    (P_CD_CMC7);
    EXCEPTION
    WHEN OTHERS THEN
    DBMS_OUTPUT.PUT_LINE('ERROR '||SQLERRM);
    END;
    COMMIT;
    END;
    Tranks

    I modified the PRC_TESTE procedure and worked fine when I made the following change.
    In spite of using the P_CD_CMC7 parameter on the INSERT command, I included a fixed value. Althoug I can´t use this fixed value. What it can be?
    Example:
    CREATE OR REPLACE PROCEDURE PRC_TESTE(P_CD_CMC7 IN VARCHAR2)
    IS
    BEGIN
    BEGIN
    INSERT INTO VSolicitacaoRetirada@MSSQLDB
    ("CMC7")
    VALUES
    ('123456');
    EXCEPTION
    WHEN OTHERS THEN
    DBMS_OUTPUT.PUT_LINE('ERRO NO INSERT '||SQLERRM);
    END;
    COMMIT;
    END;

    Hello Zack,
    The Oracle Migration Workbench can help you to migrate your data from your Oracle 9.2 database to SQL Server 2000. Please refer to Chapter 6, 'Migrating the Database' in the Oracle Migration Workbench User's Guide for more information about how to migrate your data using the Oracle Migration Workbench.
    You can find this document at the following location on the Oracle Technology Network (OTN) Web site:

  • Data Sharing with SQL Server

    I am working with another consultant that has a customer that is mainly .NET and SQL Server. They are looking at ways to share data between current SQL Server databases (up to 100) and a Oracle database. I figured a SQL Server/ Oracle Gateway may help but I am getting push back from about using either streams or replication. The question is how explain to the customer how to setup one or the other of these

    Can you clarify what "share" is intended to mean here? In particular, which system(s) are the source and which system(s) are the target?
    Streams is used to publish and consume changes in the form of Logical Change Records (LCRs). It would be possible to write code that would publish LCRs from a non-Oracle database, but that would require a potentially hefty amount of code. Consuming LCRs in a non-Oracle system tends to be the easier option.
    You can use Heterogeneous Services to create a database link from an Oracle database to a non-Oracle database (much like creating a linked server in SQL Server to a non-SQL Server database). With those database links in place, you can use materialized views to pull the data from the SQL Server systems into Oracle.
    http://tahiti.oracle.com has all the Oracle documentation online. There are multiple manuals that describe how to implement these various options.

  • Comments not imported from Data Dictionary of SQL Server. SDDM 3.3.0.747

    Hi,
    SDDM 3.3.0.747 32-bit on Windows 7 64-bit.
    Comments are not imported from Data Dictionary of SQL Server 2008. Connection through Microsoft JDBC Driver 4.0 for SQL Server or jTDS 1.2.7
    What I have tried? In SDDM DDL generation, Comments in DBRMS for SQL Server are generated with "EXEC sp_addextendedproperty 'MS_Description' , 'Test Comment' ..." so I added extended property named "MS_Description" into SQL Server database, both on table and column. None of them were imported from Data Dictionary into SSDM. I have tried both drivers stated above. Is it a bug or am I missing something?
    I've found similar question thread Re: Data dictionary import doesn't import column comments for SDDM 3.0.0.665, so I guess it is a bug when importing with JDBC drivers.

    Extended properties were not imported correctly from SQLServer databases at DM 3.3.0.747.
    Calls to sp_addextendedproperty and fn_listextendedproperty have been modified.
    I don't think it is a problem with JDBC drivers.
    A bug fix should be available in the next release of DM.

    CA Forum: Administration
    I am working in a new enviorment and i am trying to save a report to the Crystal Server via the CMC. I am uploading the report from the objects tab and attempting to save to a folder. The report has 1 static defined parameter and that's it. When i click submit to save the report i receive the following error message: "There was an error while writing data back to the server: Failed to commit objects to server : Duplicate object name in the same folder." There is not a anothe report within the folder with that name. What could be causing this error message and equally important, what is the solution.

    hte message you received about duplicate user probably means something hadn't fully updated yet. Once it did then it worked...

  • Data services with SQL Server 2008 and Invalid time format variable

    Hi all
    Recently we have switched from DI on SQL Server 2005, to DS(Date Services) on SQL Server 2008. However I have faced an odd error on the query that I was running successfully in DI.
    I validate my query output using a validation object to fill either Target table (if it passes), or the Target_Fail table (if it fails). Before sending data to the Target_Fail table, I map the columns using a query to the Target_Fail table. As I have a column called 'ETL_Load_Date' in that table, which I should fill it with a global variable called 'Load_Date'. I have set this global variable in the script at the very first beginning of the job. It is a data variable type:
    $Load_Date = to_char(sysdate(),'YYYY.MM.DD');
    When I assign this global variable to a datetime data type cloumn in my table and run the job using Data Services, I get this error:
    error message for operation <SQLExecute>: <[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver]Invalid time format>.
    However I didn't have this problem when I was running my job on the SQL Server 2005 using Data Integrator. The strange thing is that, when I debug this job, it runs completely successfully!!
    Could you please help me to fix this problem?
    Thanks for your help in advance.

    Thanks for your reply.
    The ETL_Date is a datetime column and the global variable is date data type. I have to use the to_char() function to be able to get just the date part of the current system datetime. Earlier I had tried date_part function but it returns int, which didn't work for me.
    I found what the issue was. I don't know why there were some little squares next to the name of the global variable which I had mapped to the ETL_Date in the query object!!! The format and everything was OK, as I had the same mapping in other tables that had worked successfully.
    When I deleted the column in the query object and added it again, my problem solved.
