Organization for Newbies

ok so far I learned that;
1) when you save things, they usually save to your desktop.
2) when you drag things from the desktop to where you want them to be, they get copied not moved. However sometimes they just get moved.
3) when you download something, you download the application but you also download the "disk mounter" and usually some other stuff too that creates new icons on your desktop.
today I deleted a bunch of things from the desktop that appears to be remnant of downloads of the past. First I tested to see that the application would open before emptying the trash.
So, how do you;
1) when its a picture and you want pics to store in one file, how do you get them to go there without making a stop on the desktop?
2) at the left of the finder window, it says "My Pictures" (for instance)
either a) how do you get this link to refer to all the pics on the computer?
b) how do you modify this side bar so that its the same for each drive?
eg, I have 4 drives (2 external that are mirrored) and one removable usb card.
when I'm looking at the external drive for instance, I want the side bar to be reflective of its music, photos, movies etc.
what I think is happening is when I'm looking at music for instance, I think its referring to drive 2.
coming from a PC background for the past 15 years, I find this the hardest thing to get used to however its a ladder I'm willing to climb because I find the mac so far superior to the pc in the way it processes video and the basic operating system.
with the PC I was always guessing if I'm not doing something right or is it a virus or spyware or other conflict. So far I have not had to deal with those red herrings on the mac! The time I spend tech supporting my pc, is now being used as more productive time - that alone was worth the double cost of the mac!
3) when you are looking for pictures and you click external drive for instance, then you get the sub folders, and sub folders of that etc until you get to the pics you want - I want to be able to open "Pictures" and be able to see the thumbnails right there (the way pc file work) any way to do that without using "bridge" for eg, because I don't want to have to open a separate application every time I want to import pics into something for instance.
4) regarding Dock: how do you add / remove icons from the navigation dock? Why would you want to have quick start icons on the desktop if you cant see the desktop most of the time? Why wouldn't you want all your programs to start from the dock? --
4b) years ago when I first saw a Mac, I recall when you moved across the dock, the applications would enlarge in a half circle. Mine doesn't do that. instead I have one static dock. I think the other way might save some space and be able to handle more applications on it? thoughts?
5) finally, is there any way of checking for duplicates? I'm sure I have more than one of many things.

G5   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   2x 2.6G DCPs, 3.5GB Ram, 2x160GHDs + 2x320G External HDs, DualCRT's, Shuttle Pro

The desktop is a terrible place to store things. Each Icon on the desktop takes as much storage space and processing power as having another entire Window open.
Mac OS X is a Multi-user System, even if you are the only one who has ever logged on to your Mac. So the files are organized into System stuff and User stuff. The User stuff is (by default) at top-level on the boot drive in a file called Users, with a folder for each login-name.
If you open any window set up with the sidebar on the left, you will see there is a Home (looks like a house with a gable roof) Icon with your login-name on it. By default there is (inside each Home folder) a Desktop folder, a Documents folder, a Music Folder, a Pictures Folder, a Movies folder, and a Library Folder (contains Your Login-name's (not the System's!) Preferences and quasi-System stuff. You can create an Alias for most User folders, so you can keep your active Pictures folder anywhere. You can delete any of the default folders (except Library and Desktop) and create new ones using any organization you like.
I suggest you create a new folder inside the Documents folder called Downloads, and set the Preferences in your Browser to put all downloads there by default. That will go a long way toward not re-cluttering the Desktop.
When installing stuff, you often get a pseudo-drive containing the Install image and read-me and possibly other files. You just have to have the discipline to move those pseudo-drives or their contents somewhere else (like another folder or the Trash) when you are done with the installation. The installers that come in through Software Update store their images in
Macintosh_HD-name/Library/Packages
so you may see them start to accumulate there. You can clean out that folder from time to time with impunity. But DO NOT clean out the Receipts folder nearby, or many things will get very confused.
EDIT: cleaned up some ambiguous pronouns and clarified the language a little.

Which is better for newbies, Jgrasp or Netbeans? I need something that explains errors more thoroughly than Jgrasp.

Here's my code with 3 errors. Now bear in mind that my program has compiled completely and ran correctly up to this method. All I'm trying to do with this method is get the average of all grades in a multi-array. I researched and found some code that was similar to what I needed to do but it's not working out yet. All other methods in my program work perfectly but I can't get this one to compile.

  • Photo manager/organizer for Photoshop?

Does Photoshop (current version) come with an Organizer for managing photos?  Photoshop Element has the built in Organizer (or program). Or is Lightroom considered the organizer for Photoshop and must be purchased separately.  From other forums I have read, I believe I understand the differences between Lightroom and PSE for editing (especially for raw images).   I just do not understand is Photoshop has any type of organizing, tagging, etc. software built in?
    Thank you... Patrick

The whole issue of “digital asset management” is pretty complicated.  The needs of consumers, prosumers, and professionals vary greatly, and it’s pretty clear that no one program or class of programs currently available in the market is sufficient.  If you search for “digital asset management”, you’ll get a pretty good feel for the issue.
Most users of Photoshop Elements want it primarily for the Editor, not the Organizer.  The Organizer has a tangled history, and since PSE 6, Adobe has greatly ramped back development, and its quality is now so bad that I can’t recommend it to anyone. Free or inexpensive products like Picasa, Windows Live Photo Gallery,  or iPhoto are easier to use and faster and better meet the needs of many PSE users.
With respect to Photoshop, its users have such different workflows that no single product or class of product could meet everyone’s needs.  Many Photoshop users find Bridge useful, but I’d guess that many more don’t go near Bridge.

  • In PSE will I use more hard-disk space by using iPhoto plus Organizer for photos?

I have PSE 10 on my MAC. I normally download my photos onto iPhoto (and a while ago, onto Bridge CS3 which came with an earlier version of PSE) but more recently have become interested in using the PSE Organizer for my photo library.  I have started to transfer/copy the photos from iPhoto but, having read various topics on organizing photos, am a little worried that by having the photos in 2/3 places on the MAC I will use much more hard-disk space.  I know that the original files for iPhoto are in the 'Library' so that I just see thumbnails on iPhoto ( I may be wrong here?), but will the photos I now have on Organizer be working off those same 'Library' originals or am I doubling up on the space required to store these photos?

For information my iPhoto is v 9.5.1 and would seem not to like .dng files so won't load them (I am using the Adobe RAW to DNG 8.3 Converter at the moment mainly because I would have to upgrade to PSE12 to get the RAW plug-in to process my Lumix G-6 RAW files, which is fairly expensive and, even then, my iPhoto would still be the same version unless I upgraded that as well!).
I can load the RAW files onto iPhoto but when I then send them to PSE or iPhoto itself for editing they seem to be automatically converted to .jpg and do not have the usual RAW editing selection palette. However, the PSE Organizer seems happy to accept the .dng files (but not the RAW files) and when sent to PSE for editing I do get the RAW type palette, so it looks like storing my .dng files in Organizer is a good idea and, therfore, I might as well store other photos there as well rather than run two different organizers - I will leave the photos in Bridge as they are.
If you are talking about photos not in iphoto, this is correct. If you use "from iPhoto" you will get automatic duplicates of the originals in a new location. If you export them manually and use from files and folders, yes, the organizer just makes a thumbnail.
This paragraph made me think!  I'm pretty sure that when I decided to transfer my photos from iPhoto into PSE Organizer I used "from iPhoto" as this seemed the easiest way.  Does this mean that I have duplicated the file size of my iPhoto library and am therefore using much more hard-disc space than if I had used "from files and folders" (getting just thumbnails)? The transfer seems to have pulled in a lot of folders! If this is the case, is there any way to go back and do it again but "from files and folders" next time?!
This is all rather complicated it would seem (or I'm making it that way!) and I really appreciate your help.

  • Remove the exsting extended sales organization for material master

    Hi All,
Could you advice how to remove the existing extened sales organization for a material master?
    e.g.
we have a mateiral A-001 and have extended sales org / distribution channel
    8110  10
    8210  10
and currently we don't want 8210 10 to sell this part, can we disable or remove this sales org / dis channel for this part?
    Thanks,

Go to material master and select Sales: Sales Org. Data 1  view and click on "Organisational levels" tab at the bottom.  Maintain delivering plant, sales organisation 8210 and distribution channel 10 and execute.
There you can see a field "DChain-spec. status" where you assign "01" and save.
Go to OVSU, select "01" and click on blue lens on top so that you will see some list of tabs.  In that maintain "B"  against "Block for order" field and save.
Now try to create sale order for this material from sales organisation 8210 and also from 8110 and you will find that you can create sale order from 8110 and not from 8210.
    thanks

  • Sales organization for two different plant

    Hi,
We have one company code , one plant as mfg.   and one sales organization  it is in live  we do all activity in those plant,  now in development along with this plant  we have created one new depot plant  and assign to exsting compnay code, we in this company we want to do both mfg  as welll as trading activity  now we have two Plant  so it is necessary  to create  two differenmt sales organization  for this,
or with single sales organization we can do both the activity  , in case of sales order  how we can give the ref.  of Plant   thorugh which we want to dispatch the materils,  we have material  , vendor , custom commom in both plant.
    regards,
    zafar

    Hi Zafar,
You dont have to create two sales organization for mfg plant and trading plant. With one Sales organization you can do all the activaity.
Ie sales from mfg plant, sales from trading plant, Stock transfer from one plant to another plant. all the sales related transaction you can cover with one sales organization.,
Like different vendor, material and custom can be handle with one sales organization.
In terms of report SD will have all kings of report from which you can easily identify from this plant how much sales has been done. All the details you can get it.
Try with one sales org only, if any problem ur facing then let me know.

  • Same purchase organization for two companies codes

    Hello,
In SRM It is possible to have an organizational structure with a common purchase organization for two companies codes in backend?
         Thanks in advance

Yes, it is possible in SRM. Assign both co. codes in the company code attribute BUK of the Purchase org, then in the responsibility tab of the Purchase group maintain the org unit object ID of both the company codes (if you have different org units for each co. code) so that the purchase group will be responsible for the users of both the company codes.

  • MediaSource Player/Organizer for Vista won't inst

I just downloaded the MediaSource Player/Organizer for Vista (32 bit, but it appears to be the same download as the 64 bit). It won't install. The error message I receive is "Setup is unable to detect a supported product on your system". I had first tried to install from the disk that came with my ZEN Micro, but it wouldn't install becuase it's only for XP and below. I also tried to install the DirectX 9.0 as per the instructions - I found that interesting since DirectX 9.0 does not support Vista. But it installed anyway. So....has anyone hit this problem and what is missing from my system?

I seem to recall hitting this problem on WindowsXP as well, and I had to install the drivers before the application would install...

  • HELP ME GUYS WITH CREDIT ADVICE FOR NEWBIE

Thanks for reading!  I just want to ask you guys, I'm looking to help my girlfriend open her first credit card.  I have plenty with all of the creditors and I began with Capital One.  I believe at that time I had my student loan reporting though.  She has nothing on her report aside from a few inquiries (AT&T and a few store card HPs).  She said some of her friends have been approved for a low CL Discover It card.  I don't know if there is a Discover It offering for newbies or if they must just have something on their report.  I recommended she get a Cap1 card.  That way she can have her son on the card image and I know that since I've heard they triple pull they're pretty leanient.  What do you guys think?  Any advice on what secured card she should get should it come to that?  Thanks very much again!

Do NOT cosign for your girlfriend. If you break up, your finances could get messy.
Have her apply for an It card, they love clean, thin files. If that fails, go for a secured Boa card or Cap One credit steps. Maybe make her an AU on an Amex of yours to build history (you can artificially set a limit to limit your liability).Amex is the one I called first about AU and then Citi.  I almost did it with Citi because surprisingly the rep for Amex wasn't very helpful.  Should I (she) even be concerned with inquiries when she literally has no score anyway?  Do they really impact a score that doesn't exist or do they hurt a score once one becomes available.  The whole thing is I was just concerned that we'd apply for stuff and she woulnd't get approved and that she'd have another senseless inquiry.  As I said, she already has several.

  • Online systems configured for newbies to experiment

Why does SDN not have online systems configured for newbies to experiment online.
Will this pose too much of an administrative task? with the skills available in this forum it should not be a problem.
or is it a question of making profit through the training academies which are not affordable to individuals not backed by their companies to learn on the technology?

An interesting thought, however with so many users we would need a server farm of test systems to handle it.  And with users wanting to try so many different things it would be rather difficult to maintain the servers and have some sort of schedule for maintenance, resets, etc.

  • TypeKit organizer for ALL CS products

I couldn't find a place to put an idea -- but I want the TypeKit organizer for ID!! It is fabulous, fantastic...could save me hours of work looking for just the right font.

OK Arpit, I've done that (except for the part when it asks me to sign in with Creative Cloud Adobe ID as I don't use that), and I'll see what happens. The issue happened every so often, so if it does it again I'd like to follow up on this forum with you if that's OK?
    Thanks.
