Organization in iPhoto 11

Hi,
Just installed iLife 11 and checked iPhoto out. I noticed that the way photos are organized in the library via finder is completely different as to 09.
In 09, photos were organized logically.
By year > Event/Folder name
In 11, photos are placed in.
Masters > 2011 > 01 > 09 > then lots of folders where the photos are located (names like 20110109-115731)
Is it possible to change the way the photos are organized to the method used in iPhoto 09?

Mac cannot write to NT formatted disks without additional software.
iPhoto needs to have the Library sitting on disk formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Users with the Library sitting on disks otherwise formatted regularly report issues including, but not limited to, importing, saving edits and sharing the photos.
You can reformat the disk with Disk Utility but be aware that Windows machines will require extra software to work with an Mac OS Extended (Journaled) disk, plus, reformatting will erase all the data on the disk.

How do I organize my iphoto library on my iphone? My iphoto library is 60gb of photos and 80gb of video.

I purchased the 128gb iphone 6+ specifically for the reason of having my entire library of family photos and videos on my iPhone. Given that combined, my iphoto videos and photos equal over 140gb, I will not be able to fit them all on my new iPhone. I would like to have all of my photos on my iphone, which current works. But how can I organize my iphoto videos on my iphone?
I have taken the time to organize my entire iphoto library by putting all of the content into events. In the iTunes tab "Photos", I select to sync all photos and events from iPhoto but I leave "Include videos" unchecked. If I check "Include videos", then I won't have enough room on my iPhone for the 140gb of iPhoto content. I created an event in iPhoto call, "Choosen video" to grab only those videos that I want.
If I choose in the iTunes tab "Photos" and select the option sync photos from "Select albums, event, and faces...", I will still want to include all of my events for all of the photos of my family and also select the event "Choosen video" that I created. But that "Choosen video" event will not have any content because I did not choose the "Include video" option in the Itunes "Photo" tab. It seems that Videos are either all or nothing.
Is there a way that I can have all of my photos in events syncd to my iPhone yet only sync certain videos so that I do not run out of room on my iPhone?

You could import selected videos to iTunes, and then sync the videos from the iTunes library.
Or move the videos, that you do not want to sync to your iPhone, to a different iPhoto Library.

How do I transfer photos in organizer to iPhoto?

I am going to be switching from windows to Mac. I currently use Photoshop Elements 9.0 and I have approximately 9000 photos in Organizer. I would like to continue to use Elements as my photo editing program and iPhoto to catalog my pictures. Is there a way to transfer ohotos from Organizer to iPhoto, keeping the tags I used to catalog my pictures in organizer?

I couldn't see how to export from the organiser?
I don't use the app but I'd ask on the support of whoever does.
The process of exporting from any app makes a new file. You would then import that file to iPhoto. Then trash both the ones in organiser and the exported copy.
As I'm not familiar with organiser I can't comment. But in your case I would export 50 shots from organiser and import them to iPhoto and explore.
I have tried to import from iphoto to the organiser but it seems to bring all files over each time even though some info on the net suggests it can select events

I had also used the faces feature in iphoto, but organiser doesn't seem to import these tags and wants to do face recognition again.
None of these apps can share Faces data. They all use their own system and there is no standardisation.

Photo organization in iPhoto

I am a new Mac user from PC. I have used ACDSee as a photo organizer on the PC. All my photos are organized simply in folders with subfolders and sub-subfolders. I cannot see anyway to have a similar organization in iphoto, nor can I find a third party software similar to ACDSee for the Mac. Anybody have any suggestions/solutions? Thanks!

iPhoto has two principle organisation methods: Events and Albums.
Events are very basic and unsophisticated: they are based solely on date and time. The advantage is that this is automatic. For my money, Events are for folks who don't want to organise their pics.
Albums are where the database in iPhoto shines. You can create albums easily, put them into folders, nest folders of albums inside other folders. Add keywords to the mix and you can create smart albums and use them in the same way as other albums.
all photos (now residing in finder) were orgainized into categories with subcategories (i.e. a certain trip with subfolders showing different aspects of the trip, or photos of my family with a subcategory for different family members/pets.)
Some methods to approach this:
1. Start at the bottom of your folder hierarchy and drag a folder of images to the Source (or left hand) pane in iPhoto. iPhoto will create an album (and Event) of the pics. File -> New Folder and name it. Drag the album to the Folder... in this way you can quickly re-create the system you have now in iPhoto.
2. Import the pics and keyword them. Use a Who, What, Where basis. John and Mary at the swimming will yield: John, Mary, Sea, Swimming, for instance, perhaps the name of the Beach too. Doing this you can easily find all the pics you have of
John (alone)
John (with Mary)
John (Swimming, alone, with Mary)
John not swimming
Sea
Mary (alone)... and so on...
Add ratings, and you can quickly create albums of
All you Favourites
Your Favourites of John
Your favourites of Mary... and so on
You can save these into Smart Albums. (File -> New Smart Album, there are a wealth of criteria available for making Smart Albums)
Then the real plus: A single pic can be in 1, 10 or 100 albums with no wasted disk space. Albums reference the file on the HD.
This organisational power is the advantage of iPhoto. Along with preserving your original pics, lossless editing, books, calendars, slideshow and the integration throughout the Operating System.

Custom organization in iPhoto

Hello.
I would like to implement some custom organization in iPhoto, but I am not quite sure how. In Windows, I had my pictures organized by Category. For instance, I had a folder called "Trips." Under Trips I would then have several folders for each trip I went on (Vacation A, Vacation B, Vacation C, etc). These would be organized by date.
I tried to implement a similar structure in iPhoto. What I did was create a new album, which I had hoped would be equivalent to my old folder called "Trips." However, I cannot seem to make subcategories (or folders) within this album to differentiate different trips I have been on. It seems like there would be a way and maybe I am missing something here?

in iPhoto You want folders and albums -- folders hold other folders and/or albums - so for example you can have a folder - vacations - and in it folders - US, Europe, Asia - and in the Europe folder an italy folder and france album, Germany album and in the Italy folder Tuscany, Umbria, Roma
This plus date access, keywords and ratings gives you great access to your photos

This has nothing to do with iPhoto. You can not organize photo files if you use iPhoto. To organize files you need to choose a different program
IPhoto is a database that manages photos and you never see or use thebfiles. You always use iPhoto the do any organization or changes
In iPhoto you organize using albums and folders. The iPhoto tutorials are a great place to start learning hopes to ipuse it

How to organize in iPhoto 6???

I need help organizing my pictures in iPhoto 6... When I need to send a picture or just browse in my directory of pictures I have to take a guess in which folder the picture i'm looking for is in. For example I have a "Modified" and "Originals" folder, then I have to open another folder for the year like "2005" or "2006" and after that there is the major problem : I have folder names like "Roll 1", "Roll 16", "Roll 32".... it takes too long to find a picture..
Can somebody tell me tips and tricks on how to organize my pics so that I can find them easily while browsing my pictures folder???

Hi cotjoey,
First, you can always select the photo/photos within iPhoto and File>export them to the desktop, where you can then navigate to the desktop or folder on the desktop to upload or send the photos.
Second, you can do some renaming of rolls within iPhoto.
iPhoto 6 Library folder in the Finder
As you can see the structure is now related to rolls. Rolls are created for each folder you import and each import session from a camera.
It is very easy to change the names of film rolls within iPhoto to make them easier to find images within. Open the info panel in iPhoto by clicking on the "i" icon. Once it is opened, click on the roll title in the viewing window.
Click on the word "title" in the info pane and type in your new title. I like to use a date and text format such as 12/25/05 Christmas at Mom's, 1/05/06 my birthday, etc. Once the roll names are changed within iPhoto, they are also changed within the Finder, making it easy to locate an image.
When importing from a camera, make sure you name the roll with a date and text before the import.

How to organize the iPhoto when it gets too big?

Hi, I have iPhoto library about 300GB which consumes most of my iMac space.
Would you please suggest the best way to organize the library?
I have been thinking to put the library on external device but worried about slow speed when iPhoto is opened.
I have been thinking to split the library but cannot open the libraries at the same time...
Any suggestions?

Well that depends on you
first off you do not mention a backup system - that would be your first priority if you do not have one - without a good gackup you will lose all of you photos (and other file) sooner or later
My suggestion is to get a bigger hard drive
less good is to run iPhoto on an EHD with a fast connection (thunderbolt - firewire - USB2 or 3)
Splitting the library has many disadvantages - you can put the entire library on an EHD and have a second smaller library of current or more interesting photos on the main drive and use iPhoto Library Manager - http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/ - to move new photos to the full library on the EHD so it stays current
You also can just delete poor and lower quality photos (with that many you must have some - I do ) - it is pretty fast to rate photos 1 to 5 stars and then delete the 1 star photos

Better Organization for iPhoto 06?

Hi! Sooo I really like iPhoto and have been using it since Feb of 2007 when I purchased my Mac. Haven't upgraded to 08 yet because I've heard mixed reviews of it, kind of waiting to see if Apple will make an iLife 09 that will make people happier.
Anyway, everything is fine and dandy when I am importing my photos to iPhoto and editing them, but if I want to upload them to the web using an application that doesn't integrate with iPhoto (ie Myspace, Walgreens Photo Lab), I have to go find my pictures in the iPhoto library. Many times I can't remember if I modified a photo or not and I don't always name the photos I import so they become "roll 1" "roll 2" etc. It is frustrating to not be able to find a photo quickly. I have started to just export photos I want to upload to a specific location, but this makes another copy of all those photos and I'm starting to fill up my hard drive. Is there some other better way to organize photos in the files outside of iPhoto that I don't know of? Also, can you make a border around a photo in iPhoto? Thanks for the help!

first - iPhoto '08 is great and nearly everyone loves it - hanging around here you see only the very few people with problems

Just delete them after you use them - iPhoto is your photo library - don't keep the temp upload copies around
If you upgrade to Leopard and iPhoto '08 you will have much much easier and safer access to your iPhoto photos
For 10.5 users: You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Apple-Click for selecting multiple pics.

Organization, Backups, iPhoto, and PCs

I was in the Apple Store today for training on iPhoto. I still working on understanding the whole Library/Folder/Album thing but my question is this:
If I backup my photos to a CD or DVD will the organization that I've created for my photos using Folders and Albums follow and be recognized on a PC platform? I plan to Backup my photos for personal use and storage. This should be sufficient for me as I will be using my Mac to look at my pictures. However, I would also like to do some backups of pictures for my family. They use PCs. I want to give them CDs/DVDs with organization too. Does this mean that I will have to use Finder to organize my photos into folders that other platforms will recognize?
I am having a really hard time thinking the "iPhoto way" about picture organization. In Windows it was all about folders and the photos resided whereever you told them to. iPhoto seems, in its simplicity, a little hard for me to get my mind around.

The thing to remember is that an album and or folder full of albums is a virtual arrangement. It's really a list, a list of pics to display in a certain way.
Why? because that way, you can have a single photo in many albums without endless duplication. So that pic of your dog can be in your Dog Album, Your 2006 Album, Your Favourites Album etc. etc., and you're not wasting disk space.
So: what happens when you back up iPhoto is that the pics are backed up and the list is too - the database file. So, specifically to answer your question:

No, because nothing on the PC side can read the list.
I want to give them CDs/DVDs with organization too. Does this mean that I will have to use Finder to organize my photos into folders that other platforms will recognize?
No. You will need to use the Finder to Burn the CD's but you can create the folders using iPhoto. Simply select an Album and the select all the Photos in it then go File -> Export and export the pics to a Folder on the Desktop. iPhoto will put a copy of the pics into the Folder. Repeat for each album you want and then burn a DVD/CD using the Finder.

Elements Organizer v. iPhoto

Hello,
This is my first visit to this forum. I am trying to get the hang of Elements 11, and hope to discuss issues about it in this forum as I go along.
I have a MacBook Pro, which came with iPhoto. While I will be learning and using the excellent tools of Elements Editor, I find its Organizer a bit constricting. I’m wondering if it would work if I use Elements Editor for photo editing, and iPhoto for photo management, e.g. storing and filing the photos. I don’t know if that would too much of a hassle.
Any thoughts of the question?

Yes you can use iPhoto in that way. You can set up the PSE11 Editor application as the external editor to edit photos directly from iPhoto. Go to iPhoto preferences - see link below:

Organizer and iphotos

I have pse 9 and it's associated Organizer. Org. cannot import photos from iPhotos, in fact it does not even recognize the version of iPhotos that I have. I have the latest version which is 9.6. PPS 9 Org. appears to only address '09 and '11, 9.6 is a later version. Are there any updates fro Adobe that will fix this problem?

You need to first do the set-up in iPhoto prefs.
- Open iPhoto and choose iPhoto >> Preferences.
- Select the General tab.
- Click the Edit Photo menu and select In Application.
Then navigate to:
Applications/Adobe Photoshop Elements 12/Support Files/Adobe Photoshop Elements Editor
Highlight the editor application and click Open
Then close iPhoto Prefs.
You should now be able to edit normally from the iPhoto Library e.g.
Double-click to edit in iPhoto editor.
Control (right) - click on a thumbnail to edit in elements editor.
N.B. Choose your version number if different from the above example for PSE12

How to organize recovered iphoto jpegs?

I recently recovered several thousand "lost" pix via File Salvage. However, all my albums, etc. are gone. Heard there was software that can help. Can anyone out there help?

Nope - the only way to protect your data (including albums, projects, folders, etc) is a good backup - without one you are guarenteed to lose data sooner or later)
You have to create a new iPhoto library and import and reorgnize the photos

Organization versus iphoto

I'm told that when I make a change to a picture in Iphoto, then that is the view I have. The master, I guess, is stuck back somewhere. All I see is the current 1 picture when I make changes or multiple changes.
Then when I read about Aperture, I see it says that I can save the same picture in multiple views after multiple changes.
Does that mean I really have this much flexibility in Aperatur over Iphoto where I can now see my master, have a folder with my first change and then a second foler with my 3rd change so I can always see and compare multiple shots?

In iPhoto you can see the original simply by holding the Shift key.
Aperture can create multiple versions of a shot withou duplicating the file, as iPhoto would need to do.
So, yes, Aperture is a lot more flexible than iPhoto - which accounts for some fo the price difference
Of course, either can export the Original or the Version.
Any closer to making your decision?

What organizer is better for Mac, iPhoto or Elements 12?

This is somewhat of a re-post because I could not find a way to respond to a reply.
Right now I have duplicate libraries and want to go to one Library. I am trying to figure out the best way to go. It looks like I can get the same kind of organization as in the Elements organizer with iPhoto Smart Albums but I didn't know if I could import PSD files to iPhoto and Barbara B. says that iPhoto does not like PSD files.
So if I want to be able to save in PSD I need to stay with the Elements Organizer and Editor.
To make my best decision I want to know what I am loosing in general Macbook utility if I eliminate iPhoto and go with the Elements Organizer. I have only had my Mac for a few months but I see that iPhoto drops photos in programs like Keynote very easily. If I stay with the Elements Organizer will I loose some utility or will I be able to drag and drop everything I need to simply?
I am asking the question because I have space problems with my 9K photos now. I only want to delete one of these libraries once and want to make the right choice.

Well, the right one is the one that works best for you. I'll start by saying that in real life I don't use either one, because I dislike asset management programs, so I have no dog in this fight.
The advantages of iphoto are that it's much better integrated into OS X, has much nicer options for slideshows and projects, and is generally a more polished performer than organizer.
The advantages of organizer are that you can save as many versions as you like, that your photos aren't in a proprietary library (you can just file>open in any program to get at an organizer photo), and it gives you more options for working with raw.
There are advantages and disadvantages to both. Two other options to consider would be aperture and lightroom, too.
It's not something that anyone can answer for you. It depends so much on how you like to work.
