OS 10.4.8 disables firewire connections

I have been unable to connect my La Cie firewire hard drive to my 1ghz emac since updating to 10.4.8 and having searched extensively through many post have found this to be a pretty common problem across the board. All the turn off and disconnect everything fixes don't work. The hard drive flickers as if it knows it is connected but it doesn't show up on the system profiler. Because it is obvious that it was caused by the upgrade, is their a fix coming down the line for this any time soon, I want my data back?

Did you disconnect the external drive before doing the update? If not that may be the cause of the problem now. It is generally advised to always disconnect external drives before doing an update.
If the update was casuing the problem there would he hundreds of posts here but there are just a few so we need to look at other things to do to fix your problem.
Do you know how to reset your firewire ports? Generally it involves disconnecting all your firewire cables and powering down your computer for about 20 minutes then plugging the devices back in, powering them up, and then starting up your Mac.
You may have done this already but your post was a bit vague on exactly what "turn off and disconnect everything fixes" you tried, really means.
It is also possible that the directory for the drive has become damaged. Do you have a disk utility like Disk Warrior that you can run on the external drive to check the disk directory?

  • Error message: "FireWire connections are not supported.  To transfer songs"

I recently purchased a Monster iCarPlay to play my ipod in my car. I have had no problems until recently. Upon disconnecting my ipod from the iCarPlay wire, I the following message popped up: "FireWire connections are not supported. To transfer songs, connect the USB cable provided." It also prompts me to click the center button to dismiss the message. However, I'vd followed these instructions, and the message does not go away. Does anyone know what I can do to resolve this problem? Or is it anything to worry about?

That is the message you see when you attach a 5th gen iPod to a computer using FIREWIRE. so... i suspect that for some reason, the 3rd party iCarPlay device must be confusing the iPod into thinking it is being docked or attached to a data line of some type and not simply charging.
As for the sudden occurrence of the message, it does seem strange however, keep in mind that you are using a 3rd party device that may not be supported or endorsed by Apple at all.

  • Disable webex connect

    Hi.
I set up Jabber for connection to Unified Presence server, but when Jabber starts, tries to open go.webex.com/...(I see it on Wireshark and on proxy firewall) Therefore it always displays a window with request of login and password for our proxy server.
Can someone advise how to disable webex connect in Jabber?

Are you sure you have installed Jabber and not the webex connect client (which will automatically connect to webex connect cloud services).
In Jabber, before you sign in, you have the choice to choose between server types:

  • Can I download a DV tape to Premier Elements without a firewire connection?

I recently purchased a new HD camcorder as well as Premier Elements 10.  One of the tasks that I'd like to accomplish via Premier Elements is to download my old DV tapes to my hard drive, which the software seems to support.  The instruction manuals and video tuitorials mention that this transfer / capture must generally be done with a firewire connection (which my computer does not have).  However, my new HD camcorder downloads via a USB connection without a problem.  I tried to download from the DV camcorder using a USB connection and (sure enough) Premier Elements wouldn't recognize the old camcorder.  Does anyone know why is this a problem / what the compatibility issue is?  Is there a way to download the DV tapes to my hard drive without having to purchase and install a new firewire connection to my existing computer and buying a new firewire cord?
Thanks in advance for any help offered.

For Capture of tape in PrE, you will need FW. If your computer does not have FW, then you have a couple of choices:
    Add a FW (IEEE-1394) card
Add a FW connection to a laptop via either a PCMCIA, or ExpressCard

  • Multiple Firewire Connections on a MAC PRO 2008

Wondering if anyone knows if there are any issues with multiple firewire inputs on a MAC PRO? I will be downloading film footage as well as running a Presonus Inspire for Voice-Overs which also uses a firewire connection to the computer.

The MacPro comes with 1 FW400 + 1 FW800 ports in the back and 1 FW400 + 1 FW800 ports in the front. They ALL share the same bus.
You may, or may not, have problems. Some devices play well with others and some don't. For example, AJA STRONGLY recommends you put the io devices on their own bus, canon cameras often will only work when they are on their own bus, and so on.
I've no idea whether your firewire audio device will conflict with your video tape playback device. If it was me, I could pursue this a couple of ways. 1, contact the audio people and get their recommendation or 2, give it a try and see if it works. If it doesn't, I'd purchase a PCIe firewire card and connect the bus hog to it.
    Good luck,

  • What must I do to move my iTunes library to a Firewire-connected HD?

I have added an external hard drive (WD 2TB) using the existing FireWire connection to my Mac PowerBook 17" Titanium. The internal hard drive is quite small (120GB) so I want to move my existing iTunes library (and all associated files) to this new external HD - along with all necessary permissions/shares. Because the Mac that I have is fairly old (Titanium 17", pre-Intel, Motorola Power PC, 1.67 GHz PowerPC G4, 1.5 GB DDR SDRAM, running Mac OS X 10.5.8, and iTunes 10.6.3 (25)), I can't seem to find the specific how-to to do this. Suggestions? Answers can be specific and detailed (I prefer them that way).
    Thanks,
    Carol

I am not entirely sure you need to be concerned about permissions for this (i could be wrong).  You will want to go your music folder and find "iTunes" or "Itunes media" there should be a folder in your music folder labled something similar.  Copy and paste that to your firewire drive.  Then I would suggest selecting all the media in your itunes library and removing it from the library, NOT DELETING it (if it prompts to you move to trash don't select that option).
You will then need to go your itunes preferences and select the folder you just moved to your external drive as your itunes folder.  Should be under advanced in preferences select change itunes media folder location.  If this doesn't populate your media back into your itunes library then go to file-add to library.  Add the folder from your firewire drive and the rest should happen automatically.
The reason I have suggested removing and then re-adding your media is to avoid duplicates from popping up.  Also to prevent you from having to tell itunes where each file has moved to.  This can be quite tedious for tons of music and movies and etc.

  • My daughter forgot her passcode, so "iPod is disabled. Connect to iTunes." But iTunes refuses to connect without passcode. Now what?

My daughter forgot her passcode and tried too many times to remember it, so now her iPod is locked with the message "iPod is disabled. Connect to iTunes." I tried connecting it to iTunes, but iTunes says it could not connect "because it is locked with a passcode. You must enter your passcode on the iPod touch before it can be used with iTunes."
Question 1: What are we doing wrong? Why does the iPod say to connect to iTunes if it CAN'T be connected to iTunes?
Some other threads suggest that the only option is to wipe/restore it. The problem is that she has a lot of photos she would like to rescue before erasing it. The Photostream had not been enabled on her computer, so I enabled it. Shortly thereafter, six photos appeared on her computer. But she says there are many, many more and she really wants them. We have waited weeks for more photos to appear, but no more have shown up after the first six. Why not?
Question 2: Is there anything we can do to coax the iPod to finish sharing the rest of the photos in her Photostream?

    For how to restore:
    iTunes: Restoring iOS software
    To restore from backup see:
iOS: Back up and restore your iOS device with iCloud or iTunes
If you restore from iCloud backup the apps will be automatically downloaded. If you restore from iTunes backup the apps and music have to be in the iTunes library since synced media like apps and music are not included in the backup of the iOS device that iTunes makes.
You can redownload most iTunes purchases by:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
If problem what happens or does not happen and when in the instructions? When you successfully get the iPod in recovery mode and connect to computer iTunes should say it found an iPod in recovery mode.

  • Disable Internet Connection on LAN computers on Linksys E2500

    Hi,
I am new here, and going to setting up my router in my small office.
I have a Linksys E2500, and going to disable internet connection on computers that connected via LAN cable.
So, this is how I am going to set my office.
                                                                          Internet
                                                                                 |
                                                                          modem
                                                                                 |
                                                                   Linksys E2500
                                                                    (192.168.1.1)
                              |                                                                                                   |
                       Hub A                                                                                            Hub B
         PC 1                     PC 2                                                                PC 3                        PC 4
Hub A and Hub B are in different floor.
Do these Hub A and Hub B still give the same range of IP Address from linksys (192.168.1.x) to the PCs below them, like PC 1 got 192.168.1.2, PC 2 got 192.168.1.3 and go on? Can I reserve an static IP Address to each PCs, and disable internet only on PCs below Hub B (PC 3 and PC 4)? I cannot find any controls for disabling internet connection on LAN interface from the E2500 Setup Interface. There are only Wireless MAC Filtering and no LAN MAC Filtering.
If this thing sounds stupid, I am sorry but I have no experience in setting network here. I hope someone can help me out.
    Thanks a lot.

I agree with FurryNutz. You will need an IP-enabled device for the router block it via Parental Controls. If you have wireless bridge or a manageable switch, you can block that and all the devices connected to it should also be blocked from internet access.
I think you can set Static DNS on the computers under Hub B to 0.0.0.0 which will not allow them to access the internet but are still within the router's local network.

  • Yosemite won't Boot from External SSD with Firewire Connection

Seeking help, I boot from external SSD drives from my 2010 iMac. I recently installed Yosemite on an External SSD with a firewire connection and all went well with the installation and first boot. After completing set up and restarting my iMac Yosemite will no longer boot from the firewire connection it will boot to the loading bar and then get the dreaded Goest Buster Emblem, if I swap out the SSD to USB connection it boots normally. I have 6 SSD Drives with Mavericks and Lion installed on that will boot from the Firewire Connection.  Any suggestions ?

Additionally when testing while the SSD is connected to a USB Connection and booted if I attach any firewire device they are not recognized or connected to the operating system.

  • Is firewire connection possible

my 80 gig Classic came with a USB connection. My "Classic Classic" {2003} used a Firewire connection.
    Problem:
The "new classic" would not mount using firewire. Is this "the way it is"?
UBS is fine if you can wait overnight. I mean it's only 25 gig and it's gonna take a while.
Is there a way have either an eMac or an iMAC DC see it thru Firewire?
Oh yeah: I downloaded the manual. Firewire shows up in the back under ..."Firewire is a copyright...."
Running the latest iPod firmware and the latest iTunes.

USB 2.0 is pretty comparable in speed to Firewire, but my question is this: does anybody know why Apple chose not to incorporate Firewire into the newer ipods? I have a 5G ipod, but an older mac that does not have USB 2.0 ports- only USB 1 and Firewire. I can still transfer using USB 1 but it takes much longer. This is a major inconvenience, and it kind of boggles my mind that Apple would drop Firewire support for the ipod. It is their interface, after all, why not use it?

I forgot my iphone's password and it is disabled now because i tried so many times to open it. Now it's saying "your iphone is disabled and connect to itunes" i connected it to itunes and clicked restore. How long will it take for my phone to restore? Is it gonna be 24 hours?

It appears like there is maintenance or something affecting the iTunes server today.  I recommend giving it a few hours and trying again.  It shouldn't take that long to restore but from what I hear, there is definitely something going on with the iTunes server today.

  • Migratiing files from a MacBook Pro to a new iMac via firewire connection

The firewire connection does not appear to work between my older MacBook Pro running 10.4.11 and my new iMac running 10.5.6. I've been trying to use migration assistant and it never gets passed "waiting for old mac to restart". I 've put the target macbook pro into target disk mode by pressing "t" at startup and then using system preferences, start up disk, start disk in target mode. It appears that the iMac just can't see the older mac. Any suggestions to trouble shoot? Very little info on apple's support documentation. I have over 90 GB of data (music, files, photos). I can do this over a network connection but it will take 30 hours just to copy my itunes library.

I would start by doing the following on the MBP:
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger and Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
Next, turn off both computers. Connect via a Firewire cable. Boot the MBP into TDM. Wait for the TDM screen to appear. Now boot the iMac normally. See if the disk drive of the MBP doesn't appear on the iMac's Desktop.

  • TS1587 MacBook Pro 13" 2010, only beebs every four seconds when I try to start up. Have tried firewire connect to my iMac, open with utilities CD, pressed all the correct combination of keys during startup. Battery is fully charged. Will not startup!

I am a long time user of Macs. 20+ years.
This is my granddaughters 13" MacBook Pro we purchased for her in 2010 for college.
I have tried everything I know including firewire connection to my iMac while holding the T key, two different utilities CDs (will not open them) and held various key combinations as recommended while start up. Computer just beebs ever four seconds.
Battery is built-in but fully charged.
    Any ideas?

    Hello,
Can you count the beeps or flashes?
1 beep = no RAM installed
2 beeps = incompatible RAM types
3 beeps = no good banks
4 beeps = no good boot images in the boot ROM (and/or bad sys config block)
5 beeps = processor is not usable
In addition to the beeps, on some computers the power LED will flash a corresponding number of times plus one. The LED will repeat the sequence after approximately a 5-second pause. The tones are only played once.
Note: In this case, a flash is considered to be 1/4 second or 250 ms or greater in length.
