OS 10.5 Leopard install a real pain in the neck!

Before you install this new OS, make sure you backup all your important files. At work, I went to upgrade a non-intel, dual processor G5 tower, and everything was proceeding fine, when midway through the process it encountered a huge error and I was forced to "erase and install" the OS. My HD did not even come up as it was any longer. And, to top that off, it took 3 attempts at erasing and installing, because it kept snagging on something. I then had to restore my other files and apps from a backup, to my spare hard drive, and copy each of what I needed. All the graphics software had to be re-installed due to their anti-copying security features. What a pain in the @$$!!! Now, the G4 I put it on also had to be wiped and re-installed after a supposedly "successful" installation, because the spinning rainbow wheel of death appeared after I logged in, and would not stop. Any attempts at disk repair using Apple's own, or even TechTool Pro did nothing, and the permissions couldn't be repaired on either machine. Once I finally got everything working, after a day's worth of work, the new OS is very nice. I am not completely optimistic though. I have seen problems like this with Windows and PC's, but not for years on a Mac ( I do remember the bombs, error codes and death tunes the old OS and Macs used to make). Let's hope Apple fixes this, because I'm not upgrading my home machines until they do. OS itself is great, but the INSTALL is horrible!

I'm so sorry for you. You've only had one problem that frustrated you enough to come to Apple's forums? You're lucky, as far as I'm concerned.
Leopard is not perfect by any means, I've had a few problems with it myself, but your post doesn't help anybody. Not even yourself. It's just venting and it doesn't belong here.
As far as the graphics software goes, that doesn't sound like Apple's fault to me.
I'm sure Apple will fix all the problems. Please just don't post any more stuff like this. It really doesn't help anybody.

I can't be the only person who has this problem with iCal- when a month ends on a Saturday I can't drag events into the next month and instead have to cut and paste - a real pain in the butt. I thought there was something called "scroll" but I can't find that.

Yeah that works, but, it involves a click on the event, a click on edit, a click on the date, keystrokes, plus, since you can't see the next month you have to have a calendar in front of you so as to put it to the right date. It's easier just to cut it and advance the month and paste it, once you are in the right month you can move it around helter skelter willy nilly no problems. Although now that you mention it I will try it, maybe it is easier than cut and paste as I don't really care about the date, as long as it gets moved into the right month I can drag it around all I want.

    see -- http://kb.mozillazine.org/Kill_application
which explains how to completely exit (quit) your Mozilla application
    Try closing Firefox completely
*Close Firefox properly '''File > Exit''', not with the "X" which just closes the window.
*Use the Windows Task Manager "Processes" tab to make sure that firefox.exe is not running and also that the plugin-container.exe is not running.
If that does not work, try restarting the system.
If still no luck try restoring bookmarks from last backup, or better create your own .json backup and restore from that.

I think I may have done that once with success, but never see that suggested -- I'd try most anything to not lose history or bookmarks. But then I could restore files from my profile and restore latest bookmarks backup from current profile.''
The following will result in complete loss of history if it comes down to deleting places.sqlite, so rename files rather than deleting. With Firefox down.
Of course you have backups of your profile you could replace rename and

  • ITunes install a pain in the neck

This is particularly relevant at the moment as the updates are coming so frequently.
    I use Windows XP
    Problems:
    - I don't want to run QTTask. This is re-enabled with every new update!
    - I run iTunes from a shortcut on my toolbar. The old shortcut becomes invalid with each new update.
This means that every time an update is released I need to:
    - Download
    - Install
    - Reboot
    - Run msconfig ... remove qttask
    - Delete old now dead taskbar shortcut?
    - Copy new shortcut from iTunes start menu folder to taskbar.
    It's such a pain!
Why does QTTask keep getting added back?
    * Every PC I do this on ends up with 2 entries for QTTask in msconfig, the old disbled one and a new enabled one.
    * You should be able to detect that it's been disbled.
Why does the old shortcut become invalid?
    * iTunes is the only software that behaves like this.

Login again and it will put them back.

Anyone know what can be done yet?

  • Xperia Z Phone Continuous Vibration Problem - A Pain in the Neck

I just wanna know something.. I bought the Xperia Z in March'2013 and I just love, love, love it. However, it started to act weird, maybe two weeks back, when all of a sudden it started to vibrate, (maybe for 3 or 4 hours non stop) and factory settings reset did not help at all. So, had to update the phone software AGAIN using Sony Companion which was pretty frustrating. After losing all my data (since I had forgotten to keep a back up), I was finally able to fix it (which now seems was temporary). The phone has started acting all weird again, it has started vibrating again and I tell you its very annoying after having burned a hole in my pocket just to buy it. So, how many times, just how many times will this be a pain in all the wrong places possible?
Another thing is that, the battery literally gets heated up, if I have the internet (2G/3G) on or even the Wi-Fi or if I'm listening to music and it becomes really hot. The battery really drains out super fast and I have to charge it yet again. So, now I want to know what would be the best possible solution because I need one, and I need it fast. The phone is still under the warranty period so I am thinking of having it replaced 'cause I can't (Read: Simply CANNOT) afford to have this phone giving me problems over and over again.
So help! I want this FIXED and want it FIXED Asap!

  • HT204306 After I updated my iPad Friday 4/24/2015 my iPad is always asking for my Apple password.  This is a pain in the neck.  How do I get it to stop doing this?

I am frequently being asked by my iPad for my Apple ID.  This has only happened since the last update which I installed 4/24/2015.  I checked the settings but can find no way to disable this new feature.  It is very annoying.  How do I get it to stop asking for my ID?

    Hello, Elanhui.
Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.
I understand that you constantly receive a prompt to enter your Apple ID password after an update.  After an update, you may be required to confirm the password for multiple services.  I am unsure what service is requesting your password as this sounds like one is missing.  However, the prompt should inform you what service needs this information.  I would recommend entering your Apple ID password for all services that are labeled iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch in the article below.
What to do after you change your Apple ID email address or password
    Cheers,

  • Making a copy of Leopard Install Disk

    Hi there,
A while back I copied the contents of my Leopard install disk by simply dragging the files from the Disk into a new folder on my Desktop with the idea of making a back up copy in case I lost my original DVD. So recently my G4 started to slow up a little so I decided to de-clog it by doing a clean erase and install. However when I double click the "Install Mac OS X.app" icon and a dialogue appears saying:
"The application "Install Mac OS X" cannot be used from this volume. To install Mac OS X, please use the application provided on the Mac OS X installation disc."
So I went to find my original disk and it has simply disappeared.
So my question is If I make a disk image of the copied Leopard disk files that are on my desktop then burn it, can I install then from that Disk.
All and any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you

Unfortunately, your drag & drop backup copy of the OS X install disc is no good. An install disc, like all bootable Mac OS X volumes, contains a bunch of hidden files and directories that are essential for booting, and a Finder drag & drop copy misses all of those. So the backup you thought you made is incomplete, and there's nothing you can do to fix it.
You'll have to get your hands on a replacement set of install discs. If it was a retail Leopard DVD your only option (if it is truly lost) will to be to buy another one, I'm afraid to say.
In the future, a good way to make a backup copy of the Leopard install disc is to use Disk Utility to make a disk image of it. You can then burn a copy of the disk image to a DVD+R DL disc if you want, and boot from that.

  • Family Pack Leopard install fails G4 Dual 1.2Ghz

All, I purchased the Leopard family pack and have successfully installed it on an Intel Macbook Pro and a G5 2.3Ghz DP machine - flawless, no problems during installation or after.
However, any attempt to install on a G4 Dual 1.2Ghz + 2Gb of RAM + just bought a Seagate 500Gb Barracuda internal drive (well within the designated technical requirements), I've tried the following.
    1. Booting the G4 off the Leopard install DVD, I get the following error: Failed Install message = "The Installer could not validate the contents of the Essentials Package...".
I can never get beyond this point. After receiving this error, the internal disk isn't even recognized on the bus - I have to pull the disk out, put it in an external case to reformat it. I've even tried a low level format and also had Seagate replace the disk thinking it was defective.
    2. I then thought it may be an issue with putting the Seagate disk in cable select mode versus master / slave configuration. The Seagate is the only hard drive in the machine. I have tried both cable select and master/slave configuration - both freeze after install, etc. without fail.
    3. Tried installing Leopard on the G4 by connecting it to the G5 in target disk mode. It installed, but routinely just freezes (NEVER had this issue with Tiger on this machine).
I do see lots of people posting issues with the "The Installer could not validate the contents of the Essentials Package..." error.
For the record, after successful Leopard install using technique #1 and #3 - I am also unable to run the Migration assistant - it fails every time with a kernel panic. I'm not having any trouble with the Leopard install media on any of the other 2 machines, nor did I have issues running the migration assistant.
    Any ideas are appreciated. thx,

themdg - you said you put back your 2-512 original RAM cards and tried to install Leopard and the install failed. But my original, factory-installed RAM was third-party RAM which prevented me from installing Leopard, giving the “essentials” error. Only when I purchased RAM from Apple, and used only that RAM to install, could I get it to work correctly.
Check your original RAM. If it is not the Apple brand, it may not work because of that, even if it was the factory-installed RAM.
After I installed Leopard with only the Apple RAM, I added back the third-party RAM and I’ve been running Leopard flawlessly since.
It seems the installation software, which meticulously checks the installer disk for flaws, should also check the RAM to see if the installation will be successful (i.e., check to see if it is going to produce the “essentials” error) and also check to see if you have enough valid RAM to install, before it begins installation, and to let the user know there will be a problem unless the RAM is changed to valid cards.
I “assumed” I had enough valid RAM when I first tried to install Leopard because I had a G5, but it had only 256 MB of non-Apple brand RAM (minimum of 512 is required). A direct check of that by the installer and letting me know it was a problem would have saved me a lot of trouble checking lots of other potential problems, like a bad installer disk, a third-party drive, etc., before I figured out it was insufficient and incompatible RAM for the installation.
I read the minimal requirements for installation of Leopard and probably someone will say I should have checked all those before I tried the installation, but I didn’t, as I’m sure many others have not, because we “assume” Apple had tested it and would prevent us from making any mistake like this.
Previously Apple made their software and hardware to “just work” by providing error messages before we made an error and we have come to rely on that. But they overlooked this problem on this update. It’s the first time I’ve had a problem with an update from Apple.
I’m still a loyal Apple user, but I’ll check requirements a little closer with future updates.

  • Restore Time Machine backup on fresh Leopard install without disc.

I just got my iMac back from the Apple Store where they fitted a new hard drive with a fresh installation of Leopard. I've got an external drive with a Time Machine backup of my old HD, but don't know how to restore it. Unfortunately I forgot to ask them about it at the store and now realise that I don't have the Leopard install DVD with me, only the Tiger ones that came with the iMac (which obviously don't have the time machine option).
Is there any way to restore my data without the disc? It seems odd that they would install leopard after asking me if I had a time machine backup if I would just have to install it again.
Any help would be greatly appreciated as I'd love to get my Mac back to normal without having to have my Leopard disc sent to me.

You can use Migration Assistant, or re-create your user accounts from scratch and then selectively retrieve just what you need from your backups.

  • Leopard Install disc ejecting during installation

Had my HD go down.(I know, it's funny when it happens to somebody else.)
Replaced it with a new one and after some work, got it working with 10.4.11.
Go to load the Leopard install disc. (I purchased the retail version
and had Snow Cat running too.)
Restart begins to happen as I click the restart button to begin installation.
When Macbook comes back on, it spits out the disc and goes no further with the installation.
I've had some good technical help from people who know more than me.
Ruled out the dvd malfunction with the install of Tiger from the disc.
Ruled out the disc malfunction by trying it a Macbook Pro.
All the software updates are done as well as the update's updates.
I tried a firmware update, it came up 'you do not need this app."
I've tried holding 'c'. Something weird happened when I held 't' like
someone said to do. There's the option key hold down. The apple hold down.
Everything is spitting this thing out.
    I'm stuck.

ended up replacing dvd drive with help from youtube. formatted. loaded leopard with no problem. thanks for viewing.

  • Leopard Install fails with 2 minutes remaining

I have searched this forum and elsewhere on internet for similar issue. I hope someone here can help me. I am experienced Mac user but this is first time I have had problem I cannot solve by myself!
    PowerMac G5 Dual 2.7 with 4.5GB RAM
I was running Tiger on the machine since purchase, no problems. I installed (Upgrade) Leopard (Family Pack)on the machine when it first came out,
no problems. Upgraded to 10.5.2 no problems. (Also installed Leopard on PowerBook G4, no problems.)
But earlier this week just surfing the web I get the gray overlay with "You must restart your computer" in 5 languages. Since then the machine gets the gray "Restart" overlay upon reboot.
I ran Apple Hardware Test (Extended) from the DVDs that came with the PowerMac. It took 2 hours but everything passed.
From this point I did the installs with only the keyboard and mouse plugged into the USB on the back of computer. No other connections except monitor.
I purchased new hard drive Erase w/ zeros and was able to reinstall Tiger successfully from the same original DVDs. Was able to upgrade that Tiger to 10.4.11. No problems. Multiple reboots, no gray overlay.
Now I try to upgrade to Leopard, and it got to "2 minutes remaining", and I get the gray overlay. So I try an Erase / install of Leopard to the new drive again, same gray overlay at 2 minutes remaining.
    - Took the PRAM battery to Radio Shack and it measured around 3.4 volts (it is a 3.6 volt battery). I purchased a new battery anyway
and replaced it, tried Leopard install again, same gray overlay at 2 minutes remaining.
    - Last, I took out 2GB of the non-Apple RAM, try install again, same gray overlay at 2 minutes remaining.
At this point I don't know what else to try. Maybe take out remaining 2GB of non-Apple RAM? That will leave .5GB RAM
    Thank you for your help
    Jenny Zhao

Thank you for the responses. I removed the other non-Apple RAM and attempted Leopard Install onto empty HD. The install process was much slower, and got the gray "Restart" overlay with 52 minutes remaining.
    - never tried an "Archive and Install". Either Upgrade, Erase & Install, or Install.
    - Hard drive. I get the gray "restart" overlay with two different HD, the one that had been running Leopard since 10/26/2007. And on the new HD purchased to try to resolve the issue. BTW I could connect to the original HD in Firewire Target mode no problem to pull files off. So i thought maybe problem w/ original HD with booting. But since I have same issue (gray overlay either running or installing Leopard) trying clean install on a brand new HD, I do not think HD.
    - Heat: that is good observation. But then I was able to reinstall original Tiger no problem. So perhaps something with cooling has become enough to affect Leopard operation but not Tiger? I do not see any indication of leaking fluid (this is liquid cooled Power Mac G5, not Intel). How to troubleshoot heat issue?
    - defective DVD: maybe. But worked OK first time Leopard installed on both Powermac and Powerbook.
I think maybe: some hardware besides RAM/Logic board/PRAM has failed or "become less than optimal" that Leopard is more sensitive to compared to Tiger. But how to diagnose?
AppleCare expires May 19 on this machine, perhaps I can contact Apple?

Boot up from your Snow Leopard Install DVD while holding down the "c" key.
Select the language you wish to use, and then choose "Disk Utility" from the menu bar.
Your HD should appear in a panel on the left hand side of the window which opens. Select it and then click on the "repair disk" button in the right hand section of the window.
If Disk First aid is unable to complete the repair you will need to use a stronger 3rd party utility like DiskWarrior or TechTool Pro.
