OS 10.6.4 losing application window focus across a bunch of apps

Hi
My iMac (10.6.4) has started doing something odd - it loses the application window focus in a range of different applications:
The application stays in focus, but the current window loses focus. (You can see in the 'Window' menu for that app when it's done it that no window has focus). It happens when you're typing OR when you're doing nothing.
It's affected at least Safari and iTunes, and i think, Entourage.
There are no unusual apps running that I'm aware of: at least from the 'Force Quit' menu.
Any ideas?
(I'm using wired keyboard and mouse, and have switched USB ports for each, just to test if that was the prob)

Bob: as you may have seen on the original post I did install the updates.
That got the programs starting again, but trying to be productive is doing nothing but cause more crashes. I haven't seen something this bad and annoying in years.
I tried to simply copy a graphic in AI and place it as a Smart Object into a Photoshop layer. AI immediately crashed and PS froze. Had to do a force quit on PS.
Next I tried to do a save as with an AI file and it crashed the program. I'm totally crippled and very frustrated--as is my client needing the work done.
Simply put--why are Adobe CS programs crashing? The patch didn't solve the problem and I'm seeing a rash of discussions about crashes. What's the solution? What's the best way to get a real-world Adobe person to help me?
Geez what a mess.

  • Losing Applications Window after machine crash

    Hi,
    I'm running 10.1.3.3.0 and my machine has a memory problem that causes a blue screen every so often. Sometimes when this happens and I have JDev up, I lose my Navigators and I can't get them back. I also can't to a file|new either. In short JDev is hosed. Is there any way of getting back to where I was without reinstalling JDev? This is very annoying.
    Also, if I do a "view|Application navigator" I get a popup titled "Message" with the message "Command not handled."
    Thanks,
    Joe

    If you have defective memory problems you may very well be getting corrupted files on your disk due to the memory errors messing up data before it's written. I'd recommend you run something like MemTest and get the memory problems fixed ASAP (before doing ANYTHING else). As a short term "fix" you might try slowing down your memory timing in your BIOS to hold you over until you can buy new memory.
    Since JDeveloper doesn't really do an "install" it should be very painless to just make a new copy and use the new copy instead of the corrupted one (just don't migrate your settings).

  • How to determine which Windows application has focus

    I'm new to JAVA and new to programming. I hope someone will help me out. I'm trying to write a simple JLink program (JLink is a JAVA API for Pro|Engineer, a CAD design program). In part of this program I need to determine if Pro|E has focus. Is there some way to use JAVA to determine which actively running Windows application has focus?
    I basically want my program to pause when focus changes to another program. For example: While Pro|E is active and has focus the program runs, when I select an Excel window, or Outlook, or Notepad or any other window my program will pause until focus is returned. I just need to determine which window within Windows has focus.
    I hope I have explained this properly. I searched the internet for an answer but found nothing. I did come across some references to JNI, but I'm not sure what that is or how to use it.
    Thank you!

    I just need to determine which window within Windows has focus.No, you don't. All you need to determine is whether your application has the focus. If it doesn't, then some other application does, but it's really irrelevant which one does. All that's relevant is that your application doesn't have the focus and hence it should pause.

  • Java Focus on Application windows

    Greetings all,
    I would like to be able to detect any windows focus change on my desktop in java. Say I have 2 applications, app1 and app2 that are window-based application running on windows. What my program should do is run as a background process that will detect which one of the 2 applications is currently focused.
    I know that java cannot get a hold of the keyboard focus sub-system because of some obvious security needs, but I dont know if it is the same for the windows themselves. If anyone has ever launched himself/herself in this endeavor, please let me know what's the best route i can go about doing that
    Thanks much

    Thanks JJMack.  I was hoping it wasn't the card I was using.  This is the first time I've used a geforce card on my work PC.  However it's not the first time I've used them with Adobe's apps.  For years my personal PCs had them and usually without issues like this.  We chose to attempt to use this new Geforce GTX980 card because of how much further advanced it is over midrange Quadro cards at the moment, and because of some of the other software I am using that is more viewport and video ram dependent.  Adobe applications are still my mainstay but we couldn't justify the purchase of older technology midrange K4000 cards that were supposedly newer than my older 4000.  As these still had older PCI connections than the HP workstations we built, among other tech such as cuda core amounts that are drastically behind the times.  Jumping up to 6000 level Quadro cards for up to date technology just isn't in the budget as the prices are astronomical. As with the Titan cards cards that are high priced and yet older tech.  So we made the decision to try the GTX card for a while.  Right now this sporadic window focus issue seems to be the only new issue I've run into so far.   I'm sure I will see more in the near future doing something if the card is the issue.  Maybe the new types of hardware being used such as the PCI express hard drive, or very recent photoshop updates can be blamed.  Just not figuring it out just yet.
    I was informed by an IT professional here that has application creation experience that this truly seemed like an application problem more than a graphic card problem.   But until someone can corroborate that thought I guess I'm going to keep blaming the newer GTX card or wait to see if an App update makes this go away quietly.  No one else has chimed in yet.  Thanks for the link.

  • Application window momentarily loses focus frequently

    Focus drops for 1 to 2 seconds about every 10 seconds on MBP.  Tried to find the cause through the task manager but nothing suspicious shows up.  Worked fine on my desk but not since arriving in hotel yesterday.  I've re-booted with the "restart applications box" unchecked without any change in behavior.
    Any suggestions on how to trouble shoot?
    thanks,
    Mitchell

    More information.
    contrary to my last message, I did not fix the problem but CT's advice did get me successfully down the right track.  Despite having several decades in the computer industry, I'm a recent convert to Macs and I seem to have forgotten all the basic troubleshooting techniques I had under other operating systems.
    In case there are other newbies who will find this interesting:  I found the problem finally by using the console app to look for messages hitting at the same interval as the loss of focus.  Putting up an application window next to the console, it was quickly apparent that it was a Microsoft sync process occuring every 9 to 10 seconds that was the cause.  Disabling this through the Outlook 2011 for Mac preferences stopped the problem once and for all.
    Thanks again to CT for helping me geting on track.

  • Keep an application window in focus and in front

    Hello-
    I have Snow Leopard installed and I'm wondering if there is a way to force an application window to remain in front and in focus whenever it is open. I have a video player app playing a video out through a broadcast video card and anytime I click outside of the video player window it cuts the video output on the card.
    Thanks.
    Mark Wyse

    The windows cannot be resised. Basically I want this to be a fail-safe so that if someone bumps the mouse or a key it doesn't bring the window out of focus. This is for a church with volunteers working in a live environment so accidents will happen!
    If this isn't a native feature in OS X do you know of any 3rd party utilities that will do this?
    Thanks,
    Mark

  • Problem with new firefox tabs and window focus

    Here's a problem that I've had for ages - sometimes it annoys me, other times I can live with it. Right now it's really p***ing me off.  :x
    I have selected 'a new tab in the most recent window' under FF's Preferences->Tabs->Open links from other applications in:, so as an example, if I click on a URL in a mail in Thunderbird, Firefox opens it in a new tab. However, window focus stays on Thunderbird. I run both of them full screen, so although I'm looking at the web page in Firefox, anything I do on the keyboards affects Thunderbird. It affects URLs opened from other apps too e.g. if I open a terminal and do
    firefox www.archlinux.org
    focus stays on the terminal window. The only exception is when firefox is not already running - in that case, firefox launches with focus.
    DE is xfce4, and the system is completely up to date.
    I've done some googling, and AFAICS, nobody else seems to have this problem. Any ideas, anyone?
    TIA.

    Thanks MAC!EK - definitely a useful add-on, but it still doesn't solve my problem. In Tab Mix Plus Options, I have the following selected:
    Links -> Open links from other applications in: New tab
    Events-> Tab Focus -> Focus/Select tabs  that open from: <all>
    However, the behaviour is as before i.e. I click a URL in Thunderbird, it opens in a new tab in Firefox, but window focus stays on Thunderbird. Within Firefox, the newly-opened tab is selected or focussed, but Firefox itself is not.
    Anyway, thanks again. I think I need to keep looking.

  • Migration from PC to Mac without losing application data (savegames etc.)

    Hello everyone,
    I am migrating from from my old Windows PC onto a MacBook Pro, and I'm having difficulties with iTunes and my iOS devices (iPhone 4, iPad 1). Maybe someone here can help me out, I'd be ever so grateful.
    I set up iTunes on my MBP yesterday and logged in to my account. I replaced the empty iTunes Media folder with my old one (which contains all my music, videos and applications) via an external hard drive.
    First problem: it wouldn't import these files into my new library automatically. Just showed me an empty library I think I imported the entire iTunes Media folder manually yesterday via "Add to folder". The status right now (after some experimentation) is old iTunes Media folder copied, but nothing imported (that is, I have an empty library).
    When I connected my iPhone and tried to synch, I first had to authorize the MacBook for the iPhone. So far, so good. However when I tried to synch iTunes warned me that if I synch, all data on the iPhone will be removed and replaced by the data from my new local library (which is, of couse a copy of my old library, but doesn't store application data like savegames).
    I tried to do it via "transfer purchased items from iPhone", which took forever, but yielded the same result: a warning that all data on the iPhone would be erased.
    So the question is: How do I connect my iPhone and iPad to iTunes on my new Mac without losing application data like settings and savegames? And why is this so complicated and intransparent? I should be able to just copy my media, say "authorize this Computer, then add iPhone to the registered devices" and then proceed like nothing ever changed.
    I searched the net until three in the morning yesterday, but couldn't find anything that sounded safe enough to give it a try.
    Thanks in advance and best Regards,
    Nate
    PS: I do have the backup-folders from my old PC on a USB stick - are those going to help?

    I was fighting this battle the past few days myself; but actually it is REALLY easy now. See here:
    http://www.macworld.com/article/146958/2010/03/moveitunes_windowsmac.html
    Then, once iTunes was on the Mac, I did this:
    1. On the Mac rename ...\iTunes\iTunes Library.itl as ...\iTunes\iTunes Library
    2. On the Mac delete ...\iTunes\iTunes Library Genius.itdb (Apparently the PC & Mac versions are not compatible - iTunes will just rebuild it later)
    3. Launch iTunes and immediately press & hold down the Option key until a dialog opens asking you to Choose a library. Navigate to the folder/drive you've copied from the PC and open ...\iTunes\iTunes Library.
    (thanks to turingtest2 for the above steps)
    That was it. Did it yesterday evening. All playlists, libraries, everything copied fine. No problems; no broken links. Perfect.

  • Window Focus Lost After Saving Page - Any Way To Get It Back With Keyboard?

    I've recently begun using Safari for Windows after having used Opera for years, and have run into a problem with window focus that I didn't have with Opera. Specifically, if you save a web page in Safari, you then find that the following functions are no longer available from the keyboard:
    1. Going back to a web page previous to the one that you just saved. Ctrl+[ does not function.
    2. Performing a search. Ctrl+F does not function.
    3. Scrolling to the bottom or top of the page. Ctrl+End and Ctrl+Home do not function. (For some reason, however, the PageUp and PageDown keys do still work in this situation.)
    Why is this, and more importantly, is there a quick and easy way that you can, using only the keyboard, regain the window focus so that these functions will work again? I'm currently having to click somewhere on the page I've just saved in order to regain the focus. This is a nuisance.
    Thanks for any advice.

    Thanks very much. Hitting 'Alt' button after saving the page does resolve the first (and most important) two of the three issues I listed above. FWIW, the Ctrl+End and Ctrl+Home functions only work in this post-save scenario (as I discovered by experimenting a few minutes ago) if you hit the 'Alt' button twice (or if you do something else, like perform a search and then use Ctrl+End/Home).
    By the way, before posting a few days ago, I had tried using the Alt+Tab method when I had two or more applications' windows open, and it didn't help. But, after reading your last post, I've found that if you use Alt+Tab when Safari is the only window open, then it does resolve the issue, although of course, as you've indicated, it's not actually necessary to hit the 'Tab' key.
    Thanks again!

  • Significant Computer Window Focus Problem With Verizon Access Manager 7.7.1.0 (2707e)

    With the newly released Verizon Access Manager 7.7.1.0 (2707e) there is a significant computer focus problem with it.
    What I mean by this is that if I am using ANY application on my computer with the Verizon Access Manager minimized to the Windows System Tray, something will go on with the Verizon Access Manager and it steals the window focus - I am unable to work in the other application unless I click on the application to use it again.
    An example of this would be my typing to post a message in this forum.  Something occurs in the Verizon Access Manager and my typing is rendered useless unless I click with my mouse on the browser window to be able to use it again.
    I'm highly suspecting whenever networks are coming and going in the Access Manager is when the problem occurs.
     This problem did not exist in the previous version of the Access Manager I was using.
    This is extremely annoying - please issue a fix for this ASAP!

    I have found by not minimzing the Verizon Access Manager 7.7.1.0 (2707e) the focus problem does not occur - it appears to be a problem when the app is minimzed to the system tray.

  • Acrobat looses windows focus after showing a wxWidgets modal dialog

    Here's a code sample:
         AVWindow dlgWindow = AVWindowNewFromPlatformThing(AVWLmodal, NULL, NULL, gExtensionID, dlg->GetHWND());
        AVAppBeginModal(dlgWindow);
        dlg->ShowModal();                                   // dlg is a wxDialog*
        AVWindowDestroy(dlgWindow);
        AVAppEndModal();
    This works in so far as the wxWidgets window is modal with respect to Acrobat, however when we do AVAppEndModal Acrobat does not get the windows focus back.  In fact some other open application gets it instead, which is a problem for the end user.
    If I take away the Begin and End, I do not get the focus problem, however I do not get the modal nature either.
    Any ideas on how to solve this?
    Thanks
    Simon

    Hi,
    I see this too.
    The only workaround I found is to use Windows api to find the Acrobat window and switch back to it maually. There is a flicker, but at least the user is back in his original window.
    I can confirm this behaviour on Wndows XP, Vista, and 7 in Acrobat 8, Acrobat 9 and Acrobat 10.
    Simple code that works for me:
    void SetWinFocusBackToAA()
        #ifdef WIN_PLATFORM
            if (gHWND) SetForegroundWindow(gHWND); //AA 8 MDI
            else
                HWND AAhwnd = FindWindow(L"AcrobatSDIWindow", NULL);
                if (AAhwnd) SetForegroundWindow(AAhwnd);
        #endif
    I do not see such a problem on Mac OS X.
    I suspect the problem lies in setting correct parent for the modal window, but I have not been able to find one (for some years now).
    Also this does not happen when the modal wx dialog is a child of another wx windows (a modeless window).

  • Firefox frequently loses window focus

    It seems that Firefox frequently loses window focus when I open a new page. It may be a bookmark, a link opened into a new tab via CTRL+Left-Click, or whatever. The following scenario always results in the window losing focus (for me).
    # Open Firefox.
    # [http://www.foxnews.com Open this link and bookmark it].
    # Close and reopen Firefox.
    # Open the page just bookmarked using the bookmark list and don't touch the window.
    I read this page daily, so when I start Firefox and open the page, I have to click in it so as to scroll, etc..
    Firefox 13, Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
    I wish this site had "Preview" for its posts. Geez Louise.

    Oh please fix this ******* issue, it is driving me mad.

  • LabVIEW popup window focus

    I have a VI which scans several analog output voltages while measuring an input voltage.  It takes several minutes to complete a run, so I would like to be able to work on other things while it's running.  I don't want to forget about it, however, so I want it to let me know when it has finished so I can start another run.
    The obvious thing would be to emit a "beep" when it's done.  But this computer has no speakers, and unless someone knows how to force LabView to use the built-in motherboard buzzer, then next best thing would be a popup window.  I can make a popup dialog window with no problem (i.e. the "One Buttom Dialog.vi"), BUT the popup window must grab focus from whatever other Windows application I'm using: MATLAB, explorer, firefox, etc.  Grabbing focus, I cannot figure out.  The dialog window pops up, but I don't see it unless LabView is the application with focus.  It comes up behind Explorer, or MATLAB, etc.
    Any advice?

    Does the Beep.vi under the Graphics and Sound palette use the motherboard speaker? I'm not sure if it does. I have a laptop, and I know it uses the PC Speaker, but I don't know if this is true for desktops. That might be an option.
    Instead of using the built in popup function make your own. Make a SubVI that uses a while loop and simply states something like, "Restart Test" and then a boolean to stop that while loop. For this new VI, go to VI Properties -> Windows Appearance. In the bottom left of this menu there is a radio button with 4 items. Select the last one, which is Custom, and then click the customize button. Under window Behavior Select "Floating" and under that deselct "Allow user to minimize window". In the bottom left select "Show front panel when called" and "Close afterwards if originally closed". This will give you the behavior in a popup you are looking for.

  • Adobe shock wave flash is causing Mozilla Firefox to lose window focus.

    WhenI leave a website open in Mozilla Firefox and then shut my laptop and leave it over night, then turn on my laptop the next day and open Mozilla Firefox and start using it my window loses focus so that I can't scroll or type without clicking somewhere on the screen to regain window focus. I am running windows 8.1 with the most recent version of the schockwave flash plugin. (17.0.0.169). I am also using the most recent and updated version of Mozilla Firefox. Why am I losing window focus? It seems to only happen after starting up my computer after leaving a webpage open from the day before.

    I think Adobe might have solved this by now, but there used to be a problem where when you launched a new window using Flash, you would get switched to a different window. The workaround was to disable the protected mode feature of the Flash player plugin. It has security benefits, but seems to have compatibility issues on some systems.
    The old instructions were somewhat arduous; fortunately, there is a new hidden setting for this:
    (A) In a new tab, type or paste '''about:config''' in the address bar and press Enter. Click the button promising to be careful.
    (B) In the search box above the list, type or paste '''flash''' and pause while the list is filtered
    (C) Double-click the '''dom.ipc.plugins.flash.disable-protected-mode''' preference to switch its value from false to true.
    This might not take effect until all Flash has been unloaded for a few minutes, or you close Firefox.
    Before that preference was added, the way to disable protected mode was by creating or editing a settings file. The following pages/posts provide different approaches for that if it turns out to be necessary (if Flash EXE processes continue to show up in the Windows Task Manager, Processes tab, even after changing the Firefox preference):
    * Adobe support article under the heading "Last Resort": [http://forums.adobe.com/message/4468493#TemporaryWorkaround Adobe Forums: How do I troubleshoot Flash Player's protected mode for Firefox?]
    * Manual steps: https://support.mozilla.org/questions/968190?page=5#answer-509209
    * Batch file to automate the manual steps: https://support.mozilla.org/questions/982093#answer-518078 (alternate version of Carm's batch file with a few changes by me: [https://onedrive.live.com/?cid=f7d304d92388737d&id=F7D304D92388737D!336&ithint=file,.bat&authkey=!AP2FXW2Y_3BXZyo])
    Flash needs to completely unload from memory (exiting and starting Firefox up again might help) before this takes effect.
    Any improvement?

  • Google Chrome & Lion bug keeps switching app window focus

    Since installing Google Chrome, when I type something into the url bar, it immediately switches the Chrome window to the bottom most of all application windows that are open. Very annoying.
    For example, if I have 5 app windows open and then in Chrome, start typing in the URL bar, the Chrome window is pushed to the back of all windows. What's weird is although the window is moved to the lowest layer of visibility, as I continue typing, it still is typing in Chome. So no window focus but still abe to type in it.
    A very weird bug but also makes Google Chrome almost unusable in Lion. Shame.

    I have the same thing.  However it is not just Chrome.  It often happens when typing in Outlook or Word.  It does not happen every time and a reboot often solves the problem.  Has anyone else experienced this and - more importantly - found a solution?
    I am using an iMac and the only change since upgrading to Lion is that I followed a workaround for NAS access listed at: http://www.alexanderwilde.com/2011/04/os-x-lion-connection-error-with-afp-and-wo rkaround/
