OS X 10.10.1 Update hangs on restart, gray screen only

After downloading and installing the 10.10.1 update to Yosemite, my iMac hangs on the restart (during the install process) and I only have a gray screen.  I have no options/menu items available.  Not sure what to do next.  Help please.

Thanks...  I am now in the middle of a 3 hour restore from time machine.
Really starting to wonder how much Apple completely vets updates prior to rolling them out.
Thanks again for your help.

  • Leopard DVD hangs at the gray screen

    Hello,
I've been trying to install Leopard on my computer for the past two weeks, but with no luck. The installation completely hangs at the gray screen that has the apple logo (it hangs BEFORE any menus or dialogs are shown, i.e. before the "installation" even begins). Some people suggested that the media could be bad, so I called Apple and explained the problem to them. They tried to walk me through it, but no luck there either. So, they sent me a replacement DVD, and, well, it stills hangs. I checked/did all of the following:
    1. My iBook (early 2004 model) meets the minimum requirements (1.2Ghz PPC G4 processor, 512MB RAM, and 60GB of disk space).
    2. My CD/DVD combo drive is in full working order. I've played many CDs and DVDs on it without any trouble.
    3. I've tried different ways to boot the DVD: loaded the DVD in Tiger and selected the "Install Mac OS X Leopard" option (which prompted me to reboot), booted the CD directly (by holding C after the chime), and selected the CD explicitly from the boot menu (by holding Option after the chime). None of these methods worked (i.e. it still hangs at the gray screen).
Any ideas what could be wrong? Also, can I somehow put the installer in verbose mode (maybe a key combination to press?) so that I know what the problem exactly is?
    Thanks,
    Yousef

OK, I managed to install Leopard by creating a disk image of the installation DVD, placing it in its own partition, and setting it as the "statup disk" from system preferences (in Tiger). Everything went fine with the installation except my iBook still hangs. I've booted many times using verbose mode, and it always hangs after the following line is printed:
(Date and Time) localhost mDNSResponder\[22\]: SetDomainSecrets: mDNSKeychainGetSecrets failed error 0 CFArrayRef 0000000
    (Safe Boot works just fine)
    Thanks,

  • Update lion after restart white screen, no logo

    I have a 2 weeks old:
MacBook Pro 15", Intel Core i7 Quad 2.2 GHz
Yesterday i tried to update Lion with the update apple released that day. It downloaded the update and it asked me to restart the computer. After hitting the restartbutton my screen turned white. The only thing left was the mouse arrow.
I waited at least an hour but nothing happend. I tried to restart my computer pressing the on/off button. It tried to restart but got stuck at the startupscreen with the apple logo. Today i had to reboot my computer and installed lion again. Finally i got back on my desktop. But the software update still asked me to instal the new macosx. So i tried again. And now i have this white screen again.
What can i do to fix this?

i called apple today and i got this problem fixed
I was not able to restart my computer so I had to hold down the alt key when i turned on my computer. Than these 2 harddrives appeard and i had to choose "recovery harddrive"
In the next step i could choose in a menu to reinstall os lion. So i did.. That took almost 2 hours.
Ik finally got back in my computer.
In the menu "system updates" i still got the announcement of a new Mac OSX update. But also 4 other updates.
    • lion recovery update
    • update remote desktop
    • itunes
    • something with raw files
The lady on the phone told me to seperately install these updates and that did the trick.
There seemed to be a conflict between those updates. I dont know why. But she told me that i had to install the small updates first and the recovery update as 4th and as last the mac osx update.
So maybe if you reboot your computer with the alt key and try to install lion again, and than install the updates seperately it will work. And the most important thing.. Your files will still be on your computer. You wont lose anything by doing this.

  • Power mac G4 hangs at startup with gray screen

    Hello all,
I have a Power mac G4 - mirrored drive door model.  512mb of RAM; 833mghz - about 50+ gigabytes of storage remaining.
I recently starting using this mac again, here is what happened:
Power mac G4 was running 10.2.1 - had never been updated; it also was capable of running classic os9 (even though I never used it)
Started using machine again a few weeks ago; let "software update" install 10.2.8 update - everything worked fine
Put computer into target disk mode to transfer files to my new macbook pro (13") - using firewire connection
While trying to connect (migration assistant) - window froze will calculating the amount of space that the "user" on the power mac totalled - power mac appeared to be frozen
Did a hard reset / power down of the power mac G4
Upon restart, power mac G4 goes through all start up functions up to gray screen with apple logo (with spinning wheel) and then goes to a darker gray screen (without the logo) and spinning wheel
Dark gray screen with spinning wheel hangs indefinitely - I've let it stay there for hours on end hoping it will resolve but it doesn't
Here's what I have done so far:
Placed power mac G4 into target disk mode again in conjunction with macbook pro
I can see all the files on the power mac G4 (and have already copied them to the macbook pro) - so I don't think the hard drive is damaged
Disconnected all non-apple peripheral devices - only had a card installed in the back - but took that out - issue persisted (did not replace card in back)
Removed one non-apple RAM stick - issue persisted
Replaced non-apple RAM stick and removed apple RAM stick - issue persisted
    Reset PRAM
    Started computer in single-user mode
used fsck and tried to have system check/fix issue; no matter how many times I re-run the command to repair it never comes back with a message saying no issues found - instead it keeps returning with a message saying that the issue was repaired "system modified"
    Started computer in verbose mode
startup seems to hang when this appears:
    "/System/Library/CoreServices/loginwindow.app/Contents/MacOs/loginwindow: (ipc/send) invalid destination"
    "LayState: cannot map display interlocks."
    "/System/Library/CoreServices/loginwindow.app/Contents/MacOs/loginwindow: kCGErrorFailure: CGSNewConnection"
    "Cannot connect to server"
    "/System/Library/CoreServices/loginwindow.app/Contents/MacOs/loginwindow: kCGErrorInvalidConnection"
    "Connection called with invalid connection"
    Tried re-installing with system discs
The only discs I received with the power mac G4 when I purchased are orange and say "SSW version 8.6" on it" ("iMac Software Restore" and "iMac Software Install")
Computer does not respond when holding down "C" key at startup with either disc in the drive
When holding down "option" key at startup, the computer shows the bootable choices as ONLY the internal HD - not either of the CDs I mentioned above; I wonder if it no longer recognizes the original CDs because I updated to 10.2.8 from 10.2.1 before the issue?
    I also have an install disc for OS X 10.4.7 - for a friend's iMac (G5)
When holding down "C" key at startup with the OS X 10.4.7 in the drive I get a kernel panic
When holding down "option" key at startup, the computer shows the bootable choices as the OS X 10.4.7 in the drive AND the internal HD
When I choose the OS X 10.4.7 in the drive I get a kernel panic
When I choose the internal HD the startup hangs at the gray screen I mentioned above
At this point, I don't know what else to do.  I believe the computer is still good because I can see everything on it when I put it into target disk mode; it just refuses to make it through the startup/login process.  I have read discussion threads that suggest re-installing the OS using another computer - but I don't know how to do that.  I also wondered if there was a way to tell the computer to re-install the software using the original CDs - but from the command line (in single-user mode)?
    Someone - PLEASE HELP!

Sorry, SU Single User Mode, OF Open Firmware as these 2 where mentioned before.
As a test, let's try disconnecting the HD & see if it booys to any mode without it attached.

  • X200 hangs during restart or shut down when connected to ultrabase

My X200 hangs during a Windows restart or shut down when I'm connected to my ultrabase.  The laptop appears to go through most of the processes to restart/shut down but eventually hangs at a blue screen with unmoveable cursor (note, not a Windows BSOD). I'm forced to perform a hard shut down to turn off the laptop.
This hang at restart/shut down only occurs when I'm connected to the ultrabase.

Just as a thing to try, and this is assuming that you all have an integrated camera, please try this camera driver and let the board know the results:

  • Windows 2003 R2 Gray Screen Hang on HP DL380 G5 when restarting or shutdown after Nov/Dec 2011 Windows Update

I’ve 4 identical HP DL 380 G5 Servers with Windows 2003 R2 Std.  The 4 machines have the same Windows driver version and motherboard BIOS version.  2 have no problem.  2 have problems after Nov/Dec 2011 Windows Update!
After running for a few days from power-up, the 2 problem servers will hang at gray screen during restart.  After clicking for restart,
    - The Event Log service will stop normally so there is no more error log can be seen!
    - The IP ping to the server can still work.  The mouse pointer in Windows can still be moved.
    - The Windows shutdown gray screen can be shown.
    - [Ctrl-Alt-Del] has stopped to function.
Then the system just freezes at that status.  I can only cold-boot the system!
After power-up again, I can do the Windows restart / shutdown normally!  But after a few day of running, the above symptom repeats!  The symptom happened since I installed the Windows Update in Dec 2011.  It didn’t happen before that!
Anyone can give a hint on how to diagnose it?

    Hi,
In order to troubleshoot the server hang issue, you can first preform a clean boot on the problematic system.
    Steps:
    ====================
     1. Click Start->Run…->type
    msconfig and press Enter
    2. Click Services tab and select Hide All Microsoft Services
and Disable All third party Services
    3. Click Startup tab and Disable All startup items
    4. Click OK and choose Restart
    5. After reboot, check whether the problem still occurs
If the server hang on issue still continues in clean boot mode, for the further troubleshooting, you may check in the Task Manager to see which process takes the memory resources.
Meanwhile, you can also use reliability and performance Monitor to track down what cause the performance issue.

  • 10.5.1 update hangs on Al iMac

On my Aluminum iMac after installing the updater on an external cloned FW it hangs after restart at the spinning beach ball page. After several attempts I did an erase and install of Leopard on the FW (with no migration), repaired prefs and immediately downloaded and installed 10.5.1 It hung at the spinning beach ball. As this was a pristine system I assume that there is a problem that I can't fathom. Note I updated my MacBook Pro with no problem and the FW was problem free until I tried updating. A straight update of the clone, and Archive and Install gave the same hang which caused me to to try the clean Leopard install and update. Disk Warrior did not solve the problem altho it found minor errors on the cloned drive. Any suggestions

I have the same issue with an external FW drive on a MacBook. It was fine with 10.5, but after the 10.5.1 install it just hangs on gray screen with Apple logo and spinning wheel. I think there is an external FW issue on boot with 10.5.1.

  • MacBook Pro hangs in gray screen after security update

I just allowed software update to download and install the latest Safari update and Security update 2009-6. During the restart my macbook just hung on the gray screen with the spinning gear.
I've tried starting in target disc mode but the iMac doesn't register the MacBook's HD.
I started from the install disc (10.4.5) and launched disk utility but it won't read the HD either.
I tried Safe Start-up, resetting PRAM but still the hang.
    HELP

If not for the coincidence of a restart after those software updates, I'd say
you need to get a correct version of Disk Warrior and see if it can repair
or rebuilt the hard disk drive's Directory; since that is a likely item to have
been corrupted somehow. And corruption of data, including the System,
is a serious matter. A near-capacity or over-full hard disk drive can cause
odd issues including corruption; so there may be more going on in the Mac.
Other third party disk utilities may be able to help get into the failed computer
and the problem is likely the hard disk drive. Sometimes, a software issue in
a drive can related to a hardware failure; so to consider a strategy that may
include a new drive for the computer and an external enclosure for the drive
that is now in the failed computer, to then maybe further your recovery of data
    if it comes to that.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • 27" imac yosemite update hangs. Required power cycle and safe boot to get the update going. Now all OS X update do the same.

    27" iMac Yosemite update hangs.
The original upgrade to Yosemite (10.10) took almost a full day! The computer hung during one of the reboots and just showed a blank grey screen, no apple logo, no progress bar, nothing. I left it like that for about an hour thinking it might be working in the dark... Eventually I had to power cycle. Disconnected power at the wall outlet for about 5 minutes, then reconnected and tried to start. After about 20 minutes, got to the same point, grey screen:no action, again waited at least an hour.
Then I did a safe boot. System came up OK in safe mode to the log in screen. As soon as I logged in, it proceeded with the interrupted update, which ran to completion. Yay!
Now, every update to Yosemite that arrives gives men the same grief!
To add some more, the "Pro Video Formats 2.0.1" update has installed about 4 times, and is asking to be installed again? There's no indication that it fails the update so whats going on?

I saw the set hibernet mode to 0 trick and it failed.  Guess I can try 3 because reinstalling OS X did nothing but cost me another few hours and a little faith in Apple.  Getting annoyed as I see how many people complain of the identical issue and the fixes are variable and random.  Suggests to me that it is a major design flaw in the hardware and Apple got too cute with the just works idea and didn't put a damned power button on the display so there is no manual way to do it and no 'insert a pin here' type trick to reset the thing.
Asking for a refund tomorrow.  Past the 14 days so maybe they'll say no but if so then every time this happens I will swap it out.  At least then I know it is a three hour fix and as I was working on this for hours today it occurred to me that if the trick is to do 57 different things and maybe one will work then that is not why I made the switch to Apple.  I could plug everything in on my PC and it all 'just worked'.
Really poor customer service - the support folks are very nice and I am sure they know that this is a systemic issue but aren't allowed to say so.  Feeling pretty stupid for going on faith right about now.
