OS X Server 3 new installation - network users can`t connect - what the h... am I doing wrong ?!?!

Mac Server 3 drives me crazy ...
I have a brand new MacMini here with Maverick on board, and two brandnew Macbook Air and 3 27"iMac that I want to set up as small office. The MacMini should act as Server (with two thunderbolt harddisks connected) for the rest. So far the theory, meanwhile I´m the reality of Server 3 ...
Having years of experience with "normal network" solutions like filesharing etc. I had a look at Server 3 and thought it couldn`t be that complicated to set it up - but meanwhile I`m disillusioned.
I`ve now completely reinstalled the MacMini and the Server the third time, connected directly to the Airport Extreme, started filesharing and started the Server app. afterwards. Then I just
- opened the settings of the server, set up a local network (xxx.local)
- activated push-notification and got a ceritficate
- started the profile manager
- started open directory
- started started the DNS server
- started file sharing (creating a new folder on the MacMini, offering user folders via SMB or AFP (tested both))
- started the other services (calendar, contacts, etc.)
- opened ports for the public services on the AirportExtreme
- set up a testuser (network user), giving access to all services
- gave the test user access to the network folder created
On the Macbook Air i used for testing I registered the network account server (getting a green light afterwards), put the hook at "allow network users to sign on" (I even coot see the test users name there).
But after switching to the login I only got normal users on the MacBook Air. Switching the "allow network users to sign on" sometimes resulted in a third user "other" where I could enter the Username and password - but : no result - just as explained several times in this thread ... :-( :-(
The last three days I tried several setups, switch and renamed, issued certificates, tried out the profile manager and registered the MBA, set up the user folder via AFP and SMB, ...
But : no access to the network user granted ...
Just read the last lines of the Protokoll after my last attempts and could read "connection invalid" and "connection denied" several times in it ... does anyone have an idea what`s going wrong here ?!?!??!
I really need to set up this server a.s.a. possible and am really frustrated about this really not Apple like behaviour of this software *eyesroll* ...
Any help appreciated !

Hi,
sorry, but frustration continues ... here`s what I did :
- complete did the forth reinstall of the MacMini, new Maverick, all updates. Then installed the server.app
- delete all network connections except the Ethernet, gave it a static IP 10.0.1.201
- started the server app, renamed the computername and the hostname
Result :
- This automatically started the DNS server - i just checked this and found a server.dizwo.private entry pointing at the 10.0.1.201. According to your proposal I entered a second entry with "dizwo.private" pointing at the same IP 10.0.1.201 (named "server") - as you didn´t respond to my request above the entries are only guesses
- on the AirportExtreme I opened the ports for all necessary services
- I created a public user folder with all necessary access types (using SMB for the user folder)
- created network user pointing at this folder
- checked whether it has access to all services (was already  preset) and gave him access read/write to the user folder
- last but not least i started the OpenDirectory server showing availibility of the OD server at server.dizwo.private
... and then ?
On the MacBook Air and on another iMac I first had a look whether I get access to the user folder on the server. I could see it in the finder windows and got access, okay - fine.
Then I want to set up the OD server in the user settings on the clients - but in contrary to my earlier tries I didn`t got the OD server name, but simply a "server.local".
Trying to enter the "server.dizwo.private" simply resulted in a "host not found" ??!?!
You can imagine how frustrated I`m now about all this stuff - I`m Apple user since more than 20 years and haven`t seen such weird behaviour of an Apple software before - not user friendly in any matter ... .
This server software is advertised and looking like to be an easy to use front end to create a server, even the "manuals" (not that I would tell them so ...) do so. But it looks like it`s really more a trial and error thing when you do the installation ...
So : what I did I do wrong now ? Is there anything that I missed ? Is it a certificate thing (I didn`t set up a custom one but used the intermediate one preinstalled) ? Or another network issue ? The DNS server ? The OD server ? The naming of the server ?
I really urgently need help - need to set up this server the next 2 weeks !!
any help appreciated !!

  • Can connect to my house network, but can't connect to the Internet (other computers can)

    Hello,
I'm experiencing a strange problem. Since I started my Mac Pro (cold start) some hours ago, I've lost the hability to connect to the Internet (Safari and Mail say I'm not connected). However, I can connect to 192.168.2.1 (my router) and see its webpage (it says it's connected to the Internet). If I use another computer on the same network, it can also connect to the Internet.
Weirder, if I go back to my Mac Pro with "no internet" and launch Parallels Desktop, then I can use WinXP to browse the Internet; I'm writing this post on my WinXP virtual machine.
This leads me to think there's a problem with how my Mac OS handles the networking. I have checked the Console, but the only related string I found is this:
    16.04.13 22:03:25
    kernel
    SIOCPROTOATTACH_IN6: en2 error=17
As expected, Google doesn't reveal anything about that (and I'm connected with the first ethernet port). I've tried to restart my Mac, but the problem persists (exact same symptoms).
Could it be a DNS cache issue?
I don't see, other than a DNS problem, why I can't connect to the Internet with my Mac OS while I can on my virtual machines. If it was a driver problem, I wouldn't be able to connect to my router. If it's a DNS issue, where are the DNS caches located in order to clear them (I'd trash the folder)?
I could also reinstall the OS (waste of time, btw), but I'd really like to understand the problem, not just clear it and forget about it.
Or better than guesses, anyone already experienced this?
    Any help welcome.

If it's a DNS issue, where are the DNS caches located in order to clear them (I'd trash the folder)
No DNS caches, it looks up the alphabetic and then uses the numberic from then on.
    http://17.149.160.49
is Apple, Inc main US web site. It that works, and the alphabetic does not, you have a DNS probelm.

  • Lone Mac in a PC networked office -- can't connect to the printer!

    Hello
I know this is probably an easy answer, but I'm faced with an office filled with colleagues who can't help me and the company's computer technician knows nothing about how to help me. I've had no problem connecting to the network as far as the internet connection (satellite to router). But when I've asked about the printer, so I don't have to walk down the hall to use it, the technician has replied:
+The printer is connected to Mark’s computer. You will need to download the driver from HP for the printer and install it. I am not very familiar with MAC’s so I don’t know the process for installing network printers. If you can browse the network for Mark’s computer the shared printer will appear and you should be able to connect to it. If you can’t the only other option is to install a print server and connect the printer to the print server. You will then be able to connect to the printer directly through the network. The cost of a print server is $179. Let me know if Sam would like this installed. Currently Mark’s computer must be on in order for other users to connect to his printer.+
First, I am not too swift when it comes to figuring these things out cognitively; I have modest success simply flying by the seat of my pants. In this case, I've no idea what to look for, or where, in order to install the network printer, though I've read the "I can't print to a network printer" section in Mac Help. I believe I'm connected to the network--I am accessing the internet through the network router--but perhaps I'm not. (???)
And do I need to download a driver from HP? I don't see the model we use in the listing "printer browser" Lots of models to choose from, but not the HP Color Laser CM1015 MFP.
Sometimes I simply feel like an idiot on these magic boxes, but I'd like to appear to be on top of things for my pc colleagues, rather than simply in the dark. I've even gotten a new Apple discussion id, since I can't seem to change my previous alias (which happens to be my full name!).
    Ugh! Paul

I've got it configured now, although I didn't think that the driver was typically contained in 92 MB of software. Thanks for that tip, but now I'm still faced with the networking issue. My airport is connected to the router, and I've managed to see the printer and host pc, and have configured the printer with printer set-up utility. I see it as an optional printer when I go to print, but now the print job simply disappears from the printing list after a moment or two and I find it in the completed jobs section (though nothing has printed out). Should I try one of the gimp options? I'd rather not have to pay a couple of hundred for a printer server if there's another way. Of course, I can always walk it down the hall for each print job.... Hmmm.

  • Exteral Users can't connect to the EDGE server

HI All for about a week and half now I've been seeing this error a lot on my event logs. All my external users are no longer able to connect to the DMZ EDGE server with 3 external IP's. They can only use LYNC if they access out VPN. Any suggestions on what
    may be the issue???

Over the past 16 minutes, Lync Server has experienced TLS outgoing connection failures 176 time(s). The error code of the last failure is 0x80090330(SEC_E_DECRYPT_FAILURE) while trying to connect to the server "**********.osis.is.local" at address
[10.111.111.8:5061], and the display name in the peer certificate is "Unavailable".
Cause: Most often a problem with the peer certificate or perhaps the host name (DNS) record used to reach the peer server. Target principal name is incorrect means that the peer certificate does not contain the name that the local server used to connect. Certificate
root not trusted error means that the peer certificate was issued by a remote CA that is not trusted by the local machine.
    Resolution:
Check that the address and port matches the FQDN used to connect, and that the peer certificate contains this FQDN somewhere in its subject or SAN fields. If the FQDN refers to a DNS load balanced pool then check that all addresses returned by DNS refer to
a server in the same pool. For untrusted root errors, ensure that the remote CA certificate chain is installed locally. If you have already installed the remote CA certificate chain, then try rebooting the local machine.

  • User can not connect to the AdHoc System on UWL

Our Production SAP portal uses LDAP to connect to AD.  One of our users is having problems when she tries to get to the Work Overview, it says that the connection to the AdHocSystem failure - Action failed.  This is causing her to not be able to create/maintain substitutes in the UWL.  Any ideas?
I have connected (temporarily) one of our Sandbox Portals to the Production backend to see if the backend was the problem.  The user was created as a UME user, and there was no problems to get to do the Substitutions.
    Thanks

Yeah, that info is useless currently. Sorry about that. The App Store is buggy for lots of people right now, so the only option we really have is to get on the computer then to go to the store online.

  • AE detects my wireless network but can't connect to the Internet

I have a DELL PC with a Linksys WRT54G router. I recently had an Airport Express installed into my Mac Mini so that I could access the Internet wireless. Although Airport Express detected my existing wireless network, I am having problems connecting to the Internet. I read several of the helpful articles in this discussion forum and using the information I learned I was able to successfully connect. But then I accidentally tampered with the settings on my Mac Mini and now for the life of me I don't recall what I did to get back onto the Internet?
    Does anyone have any ideas?

    1. unplug the DSL
    Modem and router
    2. plug the router back in and wait for the display
    lights to indicate ready.
    3. plug in the dsl modem and wait for it to display
    ready.
    4. turn on the computer that is hardwired to the dsl
    modem and router
    5. then try to get online thru my Mac OS.
Is this correct? Or should I do something else?
Perhaps disconnect everything including the computer
    and attached ethernet cables?
Close, but you need to reverse the power-on order
that you described for the modem and router, as
    follows:
    Modem/Router Power ReCycling
    - Power-off the DSL modem, Internet Router, &
computer(s). (If possible, leave the modem off
    overnight.)
    - Power-on the DSL modem; Wait at least 30 minutes.
    - Power-on the Internet Router; Wait at least 5
    minutes.
    - Power-on the computer(s)
You don't need to disconnect any of the cables.
Thanks so much for your help. Everything you suggested was right on. I am not running both my desktop PC and MAC wirelessly.

  • Can see the wifi network but can't connect to the internet

    Hi all!
I've begun using a new ISP a few days ago, and while my desktop pc works just fine (ethernet), I seemed not to be able to connect to internet with my mac (either ethernet or wifi) even if I could see the wireless network. I thought it was an issue with the ISP and not with my mac, until last night when I tested it at a friend's house and bling..I couldn't connect there either!
All seetings seem fine both for ethernet and airport. Today I've verified and repaired disk and permissions. I've also created a location specifically for this network (while I've always used automatic before) since the ISP suggested to do so.
I've been able to use the internet, both wifi and ethernet, until literally two days ago on all sorts of different wifi networks.
    Any ideas folks?
    Thanks,
    D

Hi! It's been a while but here's the latest update on the case.
(And yeah,I've been struggling until today to find a solution...Danny's personal advice: don't move to Italy if you don't wanna get lost in a Customer Service nightmare...)
Anyhow, it turned out to be as simple as this:
    1) Create a location dedicated to the home network.
    2) Insert PPPoE user name and password given by ISP.
    3) Connect.
    4) Browse wirelessly.
...I feel a little dumb overlooking this option....but, I still have some doubts reg the procedure.
Why did I have to create a dedicated location?
Why do I have to use PPPoE rather than DHCP?
    Thanks mate,
    D

  • Lion Server: new user can't connect

This is a local ethernet network, Mac Mini running Lion Server 10.7.4.
I created 2 new users with Server app, same specs as already existing users, but can't connect to the server with the new id's. I just don't undrestand what I'm missing. The old id's all work perfectly when I try to connect.

Check your Services' ACL with Server Admin. It may happen that the new users are included in groups which are allowed for some services, but the new users are not included automatically in this group.

  • Network Users - Can't login without home folder

    Hey everyone,
Got a problem. We upgraded our lab from 10.6.8 to 10.9.3. Preserving our settings and bootcamp by simply upgrading. After getting nearly all machines sorted out with active directory we are still having a problem with 2-3 machines with network user accounts being able to login. If no local home folder has been created prior to upgrading to 10.9.3 then the user cannot login, the login prompt dissapears then re-appears. Any way to fix this?
Here is a run down of the set-up.
Our settings force network users to have a local home folder on the local mac that they are logging into.
Mac OS X server is 10.6.8.
Active directory server is 2012 R2.
Network users without a pre-created home folder on the local mac prior to upgrade cannot login. The login prompt dissapears, then re-appears. No login.
Computers are managed with workgroup manager, as well as apple remote desktop. But no settings are applied, and no login scripts are being run.
Also I have noticed something concerning Mac OS X 10.8.5 and up. And that is in the active directory settings, if you bind to a domain (using active directory and not LDAP), lets say for example:
    mydistrict.maindistrict.net
And you go to add your local active directory district to the Authentication/Contacts search policy eg: Active Directory/mydistrict.maindistrict.net
it will only show: Active Directory/mydistrict/alldomains.maindistrict.net.
It shows a list of all domains for the forest. But it also adds the district that you bound to as the search directory?
Let me use a precise example using actual names.
    Bind to local district: pineville.ketsds.net
Now in search policy on 10.8.5 up to 10.9.3 it displays possible search domains like this:
Active Directory/PINEVILLE/pineville.ketsds.net <- The domain we want.
    Active Directory/PINEVILLE/all-other-domains-in-forest.ketsds.net <--Which is fine.
Which is all fine, but when we select  the local domain for authentication, and contacts search it adds it, but in the overview it says that it is not in our search policy even though it is.
On Mac OS X versions below this (10.6.8 and down, cannot verify for 10.7 as we do not have systems with it) it displays the search domains as:
    Active Directory/pineville.ketsds.net
as compared to  this on 10.8.5 and above:
    Active Directory/PINEVILLE/pineville.ketsds.net
as well as all the other domains, and when you add the local to the search policy it does not give the error that it is not in your search policy. Is there anyway to make this happen on 10.8.5 and above? We have tried everything. Network accounts will login even though it says this, it is just annoying.
Last question is on one computer that we upgraded, we had a problem with the network accounts. Tried deleting the .plist for network preferences, and the Directory services folder as well as the Open directory folder and now it create the open directory folder as locked and any changes made with the directory utility in the search policy is immediatley reverted once we hit apply.
    Summary of questions:
1.) Network users cannot login without local folder created prior to upgrade.
2.) Mac OS X 10.8.5 and above does not correctly add Authentication/Contact search policy domains as it does in 10.6.8 and below.
3.) Active Directory/Open Directory Authentication/Contact search policy settings keey reverting after applying. (Happened prior to deleting .plist files and AD/OD folders in /Library/Preferences)
Thanks guys, sorry if thi post is so long! :/

Not sure what the bump policy is but my post is fadiing fast. Third page already.
Kind of an urgent situation guys, any help or insight at all would be greatly appreciated!!

  • Network users can not read Applications or Library

Not sure exactly where to post this but I think the server section will have more expertise than the desktop section.
We have 10.5.4 clients authenticating against a 10.4 Open Directory master. Prior to upgrading the clients to 10.5.5 everything was working fine. After upgrading the clients network users could no longer read the Applications or Library folders. When logging in all the icons in the dock would be replaced with the generic application icon and when trying to launch one the system reports the application could not be opened because it may be damaged or incomplete.
Viewing the iMac hard drive in a Finder window the Applications and Library folders have the do not enter sign on them. Viewing Sharing & Permissions under the Get Info window as the local admin user shows Read & Write for system and admin and Read only for everyone. This looks correct.
An `ls -l` on the root directory in Terminal as a network user reports that Applications and Library do not exist (no such file or directory). When running `ls -l` as the local admin the two folders appear and have a + sign after their permission strings which indicates extended security attributes (an ACL). I cannot find a command line tool to display or manipulate ACLs (such as getfacl and setfacl in Solaris) other than fsaclctl which enables and disables ACLs for an entire filesystem.
I disabled ACLs for the root fileystem (sudo fsaclctl -p / -d) and then network users could read the Applications and Library folders without problem. So there must be something in the ACL for those two folders that is restricting network users.
One other thing I noticed was that I tried to add a network user to Sharing & Permissions under the Get Info window, I could search for network users in the pop-up window but they would not get added to the list when I clicked select. So perhaps the problem is not with the ACL on Applications and Library but with 10.5.5 somehow not recognizing network users.
Installing Security Update 2008-007 does not resolve the issue. In fact it re-eanbles ACLs and they have to be disabled again in order for network users to work properly.

I eventually managed to fix it again - don't know exactly what broke it and what resulted in a fix.
Check what groups your network users are in, in a terminal enter the command:
    groups <username>
My machine was only reporting the primary group of the user - none of the secondary groups were listed. This machine has a Open Directory custom mapping to force local home folders (a special case, we generally use NFS homes), and when I removed and re-added this mapping (rebooting in between changes) the groups command began to work correctly again and access to these folders was restored.
I was able to confirm that the ACL was the problem, removing it allowed the network users to gain access, restoring it broke it again.
BTW, the error messages you got when you ran the ACL removal chmod command are nothing to worry about, these are just device special files (representing hardware devices in the filesystem), I doubt that ACLs can be setup for these.

  • Just got a new router and now my ipad 1 says it can not connect to the server, even though it says that it is connected to wi fi

Just put in a new router and now my ipad 1 will not connect to the server.  It is connected to the wifi though.  Does this mean my ipad is too old?  Any suggestions on what to do?

You may not really be connected to your WiFi network.
Your router may not have given your iPad a valid IP address. Go to Settings > Wifi > your network name and touch the "i" to the right to see the network details. If the IP address starts with 169 or is blank then your router didn't provide an IP address and you won't be able to access the Internet.
Sometimes the fix can be as simple as restarting your router (remove power for 30 seconds and restart). Next, reset network settings on your iPad (Settings > General > Reset > Reset network settings) and then attempt to connect. In other cases it might be necessary to update the router's firmware with the latest from the manufacturer's support web pages.
If you need more help please give more details on your network, i.e., your router make, model and version, the wifi security being used (WEP, WPA, WPA2), etc.

You did install the latest iTunes (10.5) right?  If the problem was that iTunes does not see the iPod try:
iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch: Device not recognized in iTunes for Windows
    or

A particular network user can't login to a mac in a classrom but other network users can. Then the network user can login to other identical macs in same classroom. Anyone seen this before? It has happen twice. Two different teachers in two different classrooms entering the correct user name and passwords and computer won't allow them to login. Then they try in different computers in same classroom and have no problem login.

Yes. I can login with a test user. And any other network user can login as well to this particular mac. Actually the mac has bootcamp and boots into either mac or windows. The same user entering the same login username and password can login into the windows side, but not the mac side.
I had this same issue last semester in another classroom, another mac and a different teacher. This summer I reformatted and imaged that mac and I asked that teacher to login today to that reimagened mac and she had no problem today doing so.
