OS X without Classic

Hi,
i just wondered if OS X could function properly (just for the use of internet, msn, safari and iTunes) without classic because it takes a lot of space on my hard disk, and i don't even use it.
if yes, how can i delete it?
Thx

Hi, der reiter. Yes, you can certainly delete Classic if you have no use for it.
To do so, first drag the System and Finder files out of your OS 9 System Folder onto the desktop. Restart the computer. Trash the System Folder, then trash the two files you dragged onto the desktop. Finally, trash the Applications (OS 9) folder. Empty the Trash, and OS 9 and everything that runs in it will be gone.
The System Folder probably occupies 200-250MB on your hard drive. The size of the Applications (OS 9) folder depends, of course, on what applications you have in it.
You may want to take a look through those folders before trashing them, just to make sure you haven't accidentally stored any valuable data in them.

    Welcome to the Forums Tigga.
    You have a few options:
    * Install Classic (if you have a non-Intel based Mac)
    * Install AppleWorks on a friend's Mac that has Classic installed, burn the AppleWorks 6 folder to CD, delete AppleWorks from your friend's Mac, and then copy it from the CD to your Mac.
    * Buy a cheap copy from someone you know or via eBay, etc.

  • Mustek P3600: how to install it without classic.

I just received a new A3 scanner, a Mustek P3600. The seller didn´t explained it only works with classic and just explained it works with Mac OSX.
As macbook doesn´t support classic, I am in trouble with that.
I can not install the mustek stuff (twain driver and textbridge as OCR).
So, I tried to make it works with Vuescan but it is not recognized.
The system profiler just say there is a USB scanner there, but don´t tell the brand.
Is there any driver or idea for my scanner to work?
Thanks in advance for your answers and help.

First, thanks to you for helping me!
I just checked on silverfast web page and no mustek scanner is supported.
But will be back to the site to download a demo version. Thanks for the link!
As that A3 scanner is very easy to find on the web when you are looking for an A3 one, I will be patient and will raise...
Well, I am used to work with 300 dpi tiffs to be printed offset and I need to work precisely with photoshop.
I have just tried last week to take some pictures of many original comics drawings with a digital fotograph. He though he could offer me a perfect resolution with his up-to-date material. The result was weak, as I have both to provide a printer and to keep memory of an artist work in that case.
My work is on tiny details and without any place for amateur production.
And I can not charge a lot for that, so I want my chain to respond.
With the last OSX update, I had lost the SCSI connection, even in classic. I had to restart with OS9 to be able to use my SCSI Agfa scanner. Not funny when you are finishing urgently the layout of a magazine.
With classic in need of reconfiguration for printing too, supporting Xpress but not the scanner, and receiving continuously new mails in .mac, you just navigate between problems instead of working. Probably the fault is mine but I don´t have plenty of time to learn everything same time.
So I decided to buy that Mustek scanner to solve that connection issue, as my printer very high resolution scanner was busy.
Photoshop hasn´t seen the scanner. I will check my configuration again.

  • Starting over-- without classic???

heres the short story-- Ive been runing os9 of one version or another on imacs over the years and currently have 9.2.2 running exactly how I want it. A couple months ago i stumbled on a killer deal on a g4 power mac- still an older machine but it blows my imac away- it runs 10.1. This is my first real expirence with osx and now that Im getting comfortable with it-- Im ready to upgrade to tiger (Im waiting for my media exchanged version) Furthermore, I want to zero out the hard drive- the guy that sold it to me was not a mac guy at all and I have kind of a mess on my hands. My question is.... do I have to install os9 before i can install tiger if I have really no desire to use classic environment-- dont get me wrong, I love os9, but I have a whole seperate machine dedicated to it, i also use the imac as an external firewire drive for the G4 for backing-up-- my point is that my os9 needs are covered.
And if anyone has any tips on a custom installation of Tiger I would really appriciate it- I really want to do this right the first time.

You will need to read the notes with the particular firmware update.
Usually the update requires the Mac to be booted from OS 9 or OS 8. In that situation you would need to install the appropriate OS on your hard drive to install the firmware update.
Once the firmware is installed, there is no need to reinstall it when you erase the OS or replace the hard drive. The firmware is installed on the motherboard.

  • How do I get EXSP24 & EVP73 instruments without classic (using intel mac)

In transferring Logic Express 6 (and update Express 7) I'm being told I can't access the EXSP24 & EVP73 instruments that came Logic Express 6 cos intel based macs don't support the OS 9 Classic environment.
Can anyone please explain how I might either get hold of the instruments.
    thanks.

Why do you want to do that???
You don't need to install anything from Logic 6 because EXSP24 is present in LE7 too (and it's better) and the EVP73 have a valid substitute (it's the same engine) by the GB Electic Piano instrument.
    cheers

  • How can I install software without Classic environment?

I've got a huge problem. My Powerbook hard drive failed and no data can be recovered. So, because I needed a new computer, I just got the new iMac intel. But here's why I'm freaking out. I've got a lot of software (like Quark Xpress 6 and Addobe Acrobat 6.0) that are all upgrades to previous versions. But since the new iMacs don't run Classic environment, I can't install the older versions of software so I can install my upgrades. What on Earth do I do? I'm a graphic designer - so I HAVE to have Quark on this new machine.
I have a lot of software in Windows format. I keep reading different things that say I can boot Windows on my new iMac. Does this mean there is a way for me to install software that runs on a PowerPC on my new iMac? If so, how do I do that?
I need all the help I can get with this one. I tried contacting Apple and did a chat with an Apple agent that got me nowhere. All I know is that I cannot afford to buy the full versions of software right after buying this new machine. HELP!!!!!!!

    Congratulations on your new iMac.
Quark can be reinstalled by inserting the upgrader disk and double clicking the Quark upgrader icon. A dialog box opens that asks "In order to begin upgrading your current version of QuarkXPress you will be asked to locate the directory". At this point, while holding down the "Option" key, click the "ok" button. The install should go smoothly from there.
In regards to Acrobat, any older version requiring classic will not run on your new intel iMac. However, if you've already purchased an upgrade, i believe there is an option of opting to enter your old serial number, rather than pointing the installer to a previous installation when installing the upgrade.

  • "server may not exist" error WITHOUT Classic

    Hi,
My wife's iMac displays an alert reading "Connection Failed: the server may not exist or is not operational at this time", etc. every few minutes. I've turned off all the network-related things I can think of (.mac sync, network time sync, etc) and cleared all of the information in the "Connect to server..." menu item. Also, Classic is not installed on this machine.
I think this line in the console log is connected to the problem:
    nbp_lookup: zip_getmyzone failed
If anyone can figure out how to help me get rid of this alert, I'd be grateful! Thanks!

This is what I get when I try and connect to it...looks like it can't find the devices IP address, buts a fixed ip on a local network. How do I check/change what address it's looking for?

  • How Do I Install My Classic AppleWorks version 6.0 on OSX?!?!?!

There are updaters for AppleWorks 6.0 that will apparently take it into the OSX environment but, since I can't install it in that envrionment without first passing through the classic envrionment (which is not available on my new iMac), what do I do? I don't find any type of updater on Apple's site that will allow me to do this.

If you are using a PowerPC Mac without Classic on the hard disk, use the instructions in this article to install Classic on your machine, install AppleWorks 6.0 into Classic, and then run the updater to get a Mac OS X native version of it. You can then delete Classic if you want.
If you are using an Intel Mac and run into this issue, use SheepShaver to run Mac OS 9 and install the Classic version of AppleWorks.

  • In need to install classic on a g4 running with 10.3.5 instalationdisc from

i just got a dual 533 hz g4 and i want to upgrade it for my studio
    i got a powerlogix upgrade {dual 1.2 with L4 cache]
the hardware instalation is no problem but i need to upgrade the boot rom to version4.2.8 which i was told by powerlogix can only be done in the classic enviroment
the g4 came preinstalled with panther 10.3.5 but without classic. i also don't have the original system disc for it
what i do have is the instalation for panther for a g5. i reinstalled panther and it works like a charm. As soon as i want to install the classic option it tells me that the computer model does not support this type of disk [a dvd] and spits it ouT. [i installed a dvd drive]
    help :]

The Classic version of OS 9 supplied with G5s cannot boot the computer. New Macs cannot startup in OS 9, they can only use Classic. You need to obtain a bootable OS 9.1 or higher installer CD. You can probably buy one on eBay.
Are you sure the computer requires the firmware update? It may have already been done. Open System Profiler and check the Boot ROM version.
You should not install OS X from a distribution disk that came with another Mac Model. These versions are special builds developed for the Mac model they came with. Furthermore, it violates your license agreement to install the OS on more than one CPU.

  • Classic environment won't load

after a recent software update, classic will no longer load. The window starts to load, but just before loading is complete, the status bar stops moving and classic stops loading.
Any thoughts? I cannot run any of my older software without classic.
    Thanks.

Try littleshoulders's tip about Repair Permissions first. Youy can also use System Preferences> Classic to open Classic with Extensions Off and see if that allows it to start; if so, you can use the Classic Extensions Manager Control Panel to work through what extensions are active,. disabling a few at a time until you determine which is at the root of the problem. Let us know if Classic launches after Repair Permissions and/or Extensions Off; that shoud help determine if you need to refer to something like the No "blessed" Mac OS 9 System Folder section of Mac OS X: Classic doesn't start, Mac OS 9 not installed or recognized or even to OS X: How to Perform Mac OS 9 Clean Install or not.

  • Crop tool Classice Mode

I find the new crop tool too time consuming, and it is not very user friendly.  I like that you can turn on the classice mode, but each time I select the crop tool the classic mode has been turned off.  Would you please make it possible to turn on classic mode and leave it on.
In my opinion the crop tool worked great, just because you can change something does not always mean that it is an improvement.  I perfer to move the crop tool around on the image, not the image behind the crop tool.
Thank you for giving us the classic mode, please never take that away.

I hear you.  The setting should be sticking for you, so that's a problem - though it may be a problem on your own system.  I see all the settings stay set.  Try this:
With no document open, choose the Crop tool.
Click the gear and make the settings you want.
Choose Window - Workspace - New Workspace, and name it something you like (I call mine Noels).
    Now Quit Photoshop
Do you see your settings stick now, next time you open Photoshop?
By the way, try the new Crop Tool (without Classic Mode) but with one setting change:  Turn off the [  ] Auto Center Preview setting.  The always present outer border takes a little getting used to, but the thing will operate in a very expected manner otherwise.

  • G3 upgraded to 10.2 but no classic

Got the G3 upgraded but I don't seem to have OS 9. It does appear in the preferences but won't open, just a message that there is no system folder with this app. I checked all the install discs but nothing to install just classic. Any ideas?
    Thanks.

    Hi Jack,
You're going to have to perfect disk space management to be happy with OSX on a 4GB drive, even without Classic. That said, you can install OS9 by booting from an OS9 install CD and select your drive as the destination. If you reformatted the drive before installing OSX, I hope you chose the option "install OS9 drivers." I think that's a needed step.
When you do the OS9 install, select Custom and look for an option that installs a minimum system. Classic doesn't need any more than that, and you will save some space.
If you are willing to sink a little more money into the Beige, consider getting a larger hard drive. I paid US$60 for a big and fast 120GB drive a month ago. Even a 20GB would help hugely. Make the first partition 7.99G and install OSX there. It will have more room to work its virtual memory scheme (reduces chance of memory-related crashes). Install OS9 in the other partition. In the larger partition, you can make a full install so you have a robust OS9 for the times you boot into 9.
Getting OS9 with X on a new machine is pretty easy. We bought the wife a new eMac 1.42 in Jan and OS9 was not installed. However, one of the dedicated eMac maintenance disks had OS9 so I installed it for Classic. Her computer will not boot into OS9--too new--but can use Classic for legacy apps. Its the retail install disks that assume you already have 9 laying about.

  • Need to Reinstall OS 9

    Hello,
I recently purchased a G4 Quicksilver from ebay. It came with 4 system restore disks. To make a long story short I am running OS X Tiger on it without Classic. I have some Classic software that I need to use but no longer am able to. I have the system restore disks with Classic on it.
    1) Do I have to do a system restore and erase everything to install Classic?
    2) If I install OS X Tiger after that will it overwrite Classic?
    Thanks in advance

    Hi, jr85bears -
    Welcome to Apple's Discussions.
    1) No. You can do a full erasure, but it is not necessary to do so.
    2) No. You can install OSX on a drive that has OS 9 on it, or vice versa, without affecting the exisiting OS.
Your original disks have the ability to install Classic (OS 9). Depending on which model QuickSilevr it is -
    • The earliest QuickSilvers came with a separate Software Install CD, using OS 9.2. To use that, boot to the CD (be sure it is the OS 9 Software Install CD, not the Software Restore CD), then do a Clean Install of OS 9. Note that a Clean Install of OS 9 will not remove anything -

    • Later QuickSilver models may have come with a combination set of install/restore disks, which boot to OSX. These Apple KBase articles can help use those -

  • In new GL after doing settlement from IO to cctr, value in PCTR not moved?

    Hi guyz,
I'm using new GL and activating new Profit Center Accounting, without classical Profit Center Accounting.
When I'm doing settlement from IO (assigned to Profit Center A), to Cost Center (with Profit Center B), I'm suspecting that the value in Profit Center A has already moved to Profit Center B.
When I'm executing report of the Profit Center B in S_PL0_86000028 - Financial Statement: Actual/Actual Comparison , I found that the expense is not there.
I checked again to Profit Center A, and the value is still there!
    Why is that?
Is there any solution to provide the movement from Profit Center A to Profit Center B as the settlement done?
    Need your answers asap...Thanking you

    Hi Osiegbu!
You're right, turns out that I haven't assigned the variant for real-time integration to our company codes.
However, I read in the IMG library on defining the variant that :
"If you use real-time integration, you can deactivate the reconciliation ledger. In this way, the reports that select the data from the reconciliation ledger no longer display any data. Some reports in Cost Element Accounting are affected".
Before I use the variant and assign it, I need to make sure, what are the consequences of not using reconciliation ledger and using real-time integration instead?
I also currently haven't activating any reconciliation ledger, since I assume that because I have activating automatically creation of cost element whenever Profit & Loss new GL accounts are created in FI, it's already reconciliated. Is it correct?
And, what reports in Cost Element Accounting that will be affected?
Need your assistance on those issues, thanking you...
