OSX 10.4.5 - power failure - had to reload system

Twice now I've had power failures which have required reloading the OS - both times has been with 10.4 (okay, I finally bought a UPS) - but I'd still like to know what was wrong....
Symptons -
After the power failure - I started the system - it seemed to go through a normal startup - except that it reached a point where the cursor was on the screen and could even be moved with my trakball - the screen was solid blue (not any kind of background picture - just solid blue).
I could connect remotely from another Mac - work and save files across the network. The CD eject button on the keyboard worked.
Still no login (and so no desktop).
So I put the 10.4 orig disk in the drive - restarted with 'c' depressed and reloaded the OS - then did a 120MB upgrade to get it back up to current version.
I don't think I'll see this problem again (with UPS) - most power failures are momentary.
But I sure would like to know what's wrong.
Is there some configuration information that's kept with a battery (and battery is going out)? System is 4+ years old. Is this a problem with 10.4? Power failures were never a problem with earlier versions of OSX - except from sleep mode - when I had to open the system and push a button to reset something. That didn't resolve this problem.
This latest power failure happened with the system up and running.
Thank you.

G4   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

Hi, Ken.
1. You wrote: "the screen was solid blue (not any kind of background picture - just solid blue)."That can indicate that the outage corrupted a Startup or Login Item, or a related cache on which such depends.
As to post-power failure troubleshooting, see my recent post here.
As macjack notes, power outages can cause all sorts of havoc, so much so that I have an entire chapter — "Protecting Against Power Problems" — in my book, including how a UPS works, selecting the right size UPS, surge protection, etc.
2. You wrote: "Is there some configuration information that's kept with a battery (and battery is going out)? System is 4+ years old."If your Mac has an internal battery, aka a "backup battery", the battery provides an infinitesimal amount of power to retain setting in PRAM and NVRAM. At 4+ years old, it's not a bad idea to replace the internal battery. See "Macintosh Family: Batteries and Part Numbers, Part 2."
To purchase a replacement battery, Radio Shack is usually the easiest place to find them. Batteries Plus is another chain of stores that carry unusual batteries. You can also try searching PriceWatch using the part number as your search criteria to look for the battery online.
3. FYI: I suggest you update your profile to show the specific Mac model you have, i.e. something more specific than simply "G4" since that covers a lot of ground. Having that info up-front can help others help you faster. Click the "My Settings" link in the upper-right corner of this page in the "Welcome kenmc" box and add the specific model. You'll note mine states I have two Macs:
"PM G5 Dual 2.3GHz, iBook 700, more!"
where PM = Power Mac, the large desktop line. Some use PB to abbreviate PowerBook. The more specific, the better.
Good luck!

If you have a backup with Time Machine, open Mail then click on the Time Machine icon on your dock. You should be able to move back in time to find the missing Mail and restore it.

Hi
I had a power failure 2 days ago, my computer is running again, but now I cannot send email from my iPad using Cox or my gmail account. I am receiving mail in my Cox account but not my gmail account. It was working fine until the power failure. It keeps telling me, the user name or password for Gmail is incorrect. I have not changed anything. I don't know what is wrong. Can anyone help me? Thanks

I agree, unplug and replug your router, then reset your iPad by holding down the sleep and home buttons, ignore the red power down slider, and wait til you see the silver apple. let it reboot and then try your connection.
Chances are rebooting the router will help. You may also need to talk to cox. They may need to reset something on their end.

Like the  man says:
Run Disk Utility > Repair ... (not just repair permissions) while booted from another drive. If you have a stronger utility like Disk Warrior, that would be even better.
If you find that the ONLY way you can do this is by booting from the DVD, The Hatter recommends you establish an emergency drive or partition on a drive other than the Boot drive and use that in the future. It makes emergency Repair, backup, and cloning much easier.

• I started Boot Camp on a MAC mini but then  had a power failure after 30 secs :( Now when I start Boot Camp the option to install Windows 7 is gone.  In it's place is Remove Windows 7.  It seems to hang at Partitioning disk  Can I recover?

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
That's because the Boot Camp volume was created, but your Mac hasn't been set up to start automatically from the Windows disc. Insert the Windows DVD and press C key while your Mac is starting to start Windows installation.
If you want to make sure that everything is correct, open Boot Camp Assistant and choose the option to remove Windows 7. Then, open that application again, select the option to install Windows 7 and you will be able to install Windows as usual

• I had a power failure and for a number of websites why do I now get the message "This Connection is Untrusted."

After rebooting after the power failure when I go to new websites or even within some websites after clicking on a link the message box appears and I have to add a security exception to get past the message and see the link. I am using V4.0. I do not get that message on another computer using V 3.6.15.
What can I do to reset the browser?

John,
That did it! I no longer get that message. The clock was set to the wrong day and time. So far it is keeping time correctly, but per your suggestion I will also check the battery.
Thanks for the prompt and accurate help.

• IMovie video project I made has no audio working after power failure

I have spent about a week stitching together family movies by ripping them to Apple tv format, then use a software program called MPEG streamclip to create a DV version which take about 24 gb a piece, I put 12 hours worth into iMovie which has taken a ton of space etc. So I created a project and am now about 1h 35 min in and this is getting small 3-5 clips of my son who is 7 months and my wife and myself b/c were going to England on Friday so I was created a nice movie for my new in laws and family I am meeting for the first time. So I had a saved file and iMovie was open and I had a power failure. I opened iMovie freaking out and then saw all the footage and the project still there so I was extremely thankful b/c of the 7 dvds I created due to space limitation once I imported I deleted the original (i have the original dvd but it takes about 6 hours to take from DVD to Apple TV format, then about 2 hours to export to DV and then another 1 hour to import into iMovie so each dvd took a full day for me due to work etc)
Anyway whats now happened is there is no audio on either the project or the original footage that has been imported, again about 12 hours of footage and a project thats 1 hr 35 mins. Whats strange is all other projects and imported video the sound and video works perfect. THis is the only one and of course its the most important one. ANY SUGGESTIONS WILL BE APPRECIATED.
If needed I will start over and do as much as I can but of course I am praying there is a simple solution.
Thanks.
newest iMovie, newest OSX etc if that helps

Thought you could use this info about getting FireWire to work!
First, you should always Repair Permissions in Disk Utility before and after any update; I would do that now. If you installed your update with FireWire plugged in, your Mac may not recognize it anymore.
Try resetting your FireWire ports by disconnecting all FW devices, shut down your Mac and unplug it from AC power (wall socket) for 30 minutes. plug it back in and try FW.
If that did'nt work, first run the Disk Repair as shown in Apple doc.#106214 before the next step. Then, download the combo update from this site (yours may be corrupt), not Software Update, disconnect all firewire + USB devices except keyboard + mouse, Repair Permissions, re-install update, Repair Permissions again + try. Yours is the 10.4.10 Combo update ( PPC, not for Intel systems). Others reading, download the Combo that applies to your system.
If that still did'nt get it Zap the PRAM. While restarting Mac hold down the following key combo Command-Option-P-R. Keep holding those keys down till you hear the second start-up chime, then release.
For those of you with Macs that are not PowerBooks or iBooks, a bad internal battery can cause FireWire to not be recognized, so make sure it's good! Also, here is Apple doc.#88338 on getting FireWire to work.
Cheers!

• PowerMac won't boot after power failure during install

Hi, sorry if this has been asked. I searched, but I'm not quite sure how to phrase it.
I bought a used PowerMac from craigslist and went to install a newer version of OSX. I had a power failure in the middle of the install and now the computer won't boot up. How do I go back to a fresh re-install and get the computer to boot up?
Much appreciated!

Did you use a retail install DVD? If you used a gray disc from another model Mac, that could be a  problem.
Because of the power failure, suggest you reset the PMU. How long was the power Off? You may need to replace the PRAM battery.

• A UPS model that works with Mac Native software to do a graceful shutdown and automatic restart during a power failure.

I've tried 3 UPS's (2 APC and one TripLite) that state they are OSX compatible, however, they do not fully respond to the native osx setting in (system Preferences/ Energy Saver/ UPS/Start up automatically after a power failure). This is what happens:
During a power outage, the OS does a graceful shutdown, but does not reboot when power is restored.
Apparently, the UPS is not notified to turn off during the shut down process. The power (on-Off-On) cycle is required by the mac to restart.
Trip lite tech support says they have software that works with Windows and linux to do this, but not mac.
I've tried two older APC UPS's, One Smart UPS1500 and a Back-UPS 1500 with the same result on two different servers and one iMac.
At this point I'm looking for a make and model of a UPS that does work. If anyone can verify a make and model that actually does this, I'd greatly appreciate it.
Its a simple test, just pull the plug on your UPS, wait for the system to shut down, and then plug the UPS back in. The system should reboot.

Many of the CyberPower UPS units are compatible. Checkout the home solutions on this page: http://www.cyberpowersystems.com/products/ups-systems.html

• This device cannot start. (Code 10) Status Device Power Failure for Intel (R) Audio Display

Hi I just bought HP Envy M7 Sleekbook last week and upgraded from 8.0 to 8.1 for Windows 8.
Now I have no sound and this is the error message I get:
This device cannot start. (Code 10) Status Device Power Failure  (for  Intel (R) Audio Display)
under Sound, Vieo and Game Controllers in the Device Manager.
Anyone else having this issue after upgrading?
Getting a new lappy is stressful enough but to alreay have issues is ridiculous
If the upgrade is not the issue could something have happened in transit? (I have an issue with the way Best Buy packed it for shipment and wonder if it could have been compromised)
Any help is appreciated. Or should Ibe taing this back to best buy and have them address it?
Thanks
Pam

Ahmed, if your HP Envy has an Intel processor chances are it will be necessary to download new drivers for both sound and chipset due to compatibility issues with Windows 8.1. After 4-1/2 hours on the phone with various technical agents and a lot of frustration I finally got one who had the knowledge and training to resolve my issue. I believe he downloaded the new drivers from the HP support site. Good luck!!

• Problem with iMacs loading web pages slowly after a power failure

We have 3 intel Macs (2 iMacs and a MB) on our network.
Today we had a power failure, and now we are having problems with both iMacs loading some web pages slowly (in Safari and Firefox both). I have shutdown and restarted both iMacs to no avail. As you will notice, I have not experienced any problems with my MB probably because the battery never allowed it to shut down completely.
Can you give me any indication of what the problem is or how I can go about troubleshooting this further?
Thank you in advance.

It does sound like it could be a WiFi issue. You can try rebooting your router and that might help. It just might your Internet connection or the router itself. If the router is bad, you can replace it. If its the Internet connection - you can only do what you ISP allows you to do.

• Power failure corrupted my Mail program - H E L P !!!

I just went through a power failure. The Mac OS has always survived nicely in the dozens of times I've experienced such things before. However, this time Mail got totally melted.
When relaunching the other programs I was running ( Keynote, Pages, Safari, etc. ), the only thing I lost was any unsaved work in an open file. With Mail, it ate my whole list of e-mail accounts (which I have several).
When I relaunched Mail, it went through the account set-up for my main account. When Mail finally opened, the only account was that one and non of the history of other accounts was anywhere to be found.
Fortunately, I am running +Time Machine+. The big question is, What files do I move where to restore the proper account settings and files for Mail?
(Please only respond if you have THE answer — I'm just a bit panicked at the moment and don't want to screw anything else up trying helpful hints that might make things worse.)

This is not THE answer! But it's a harmless check you can make to ease the panic (I had a problem with upgrade from Tiger to Leopard where all my email accounts and mailboxes were showing fine, but there was nothing in them!).
Go to ~user/Library/Mail, and have a peek into some of your email account folders - assuming they are there of course, which will be your first sigh of relief. Then check out the size of the INBOX.mbox in each account - if all your messages are there, those should all be a reasonable size, depending how many messages you had in them.
Then you can relax a bit. Your messages will be there, it's just a matter of how you get Mail to 'see' them, which is where my expertise runs out, I'm afraid.

• Power failure during installation

This isn't a question, but a cheer. While installing Yosemite on my Mac Mini, the power went out at my house. Those of us old enough can remember the warnings that used to be attached to system installs---DO NOT TURN OFF YOUR COMPUTER DURING INSTALLATION! So you can imagine how anxious I was when the transformer outside went thump and the lights (and my computer) all turned off, with one minute remaining in the install.
When the lights came on again, I turned on the computer and waited to see what would happen. The Mini just backed up to the last stage it had completed of the installation (23 minutes remaining) and went on from there with a flawless install. Good on ye, Apple engineers!

Hello! A power failure during a sustained read/write operation such as an update will usually screw up the hard drive directory big time. Your best bet short of high dollar data rescue services is probably to get a cd/dvd that is bootable and try to repair the disk and get it to mount so you can retrieve your data. I always recommend a bootable clone for instances like this and also highly recommend DiskWarrior to repair directory damage. A power failure during an OS update likely damages the OS as well as the hard drive directory. Tom

• Power failure then iPhoto library= POOF! :-(    PLEASE HELP!

Power failure then iPhoto> library= POOF!
We had a power failure and of course iPhoto was open when my computer was improperly shut down. After powering up, I did the following; repaired permissions and ran disk utility (no problems found).
Upon opening iPhoto (6.03) I got the rebuild thumbnails message, and I said cancel (I was going to do it later), then IPhoto opened and it was BLANK! all 5000+ images were GONE! I am assuming the library got corrupted somehow on either the bad crash, or the canceling of the rebuild option.
Now, I am a bit neurotic about my pics, so I choose to make my own finder folders of pic when I take them off the camera, and then import into iPhoto that way. So the good news is I still have all my original pictures in folders in the finder.
From reading various threads here, and Googleing + Macfixit, etc etc. This is what I have done to try to recover my library. (not necessarily in this order)

Trash/recreate the iPhoto plist preferences

Clear caches using Cocktail software

Repaired permissions (in Disk utility), and then repair iPhoto library folder permissions usuing instructions found here using Batchmod software

Rebuild the iPhoto library (option, command) and selecting the 3 proper checkboxes.

Ran iPhoto Library Manager software to rebuild the database with no success. I get the error message "This Library cannot be rebuilt because its XML file contains no data".

Updated to iPhoto 6.04/repaired permissions and disk utility.
Each time iPhoto loads completely blank and void of my photos!
My assumption is the XML file is corrupt since I am getting that message in iPhoto Library Manager.
So what to do? And hear are my questions /issues.
I would certainly like to preserve my 4 years of customization of keywords, titles , folders, smart folders, etc. (which I assume is held in the now corrupt XML file?).
What is the best way to recover my customization and most importantly the images!
I realize I can just re-import all my images from my original finder image folders that I have, but I assume this method will not recover my keywords ,etc?
Is there a way to recover my customization?
I do have a fairly recent backup of my iPhoto folder on a backup drive ( I think!) It does not have all my newer pics in it, but as I mentioned I do still have all my .jpgs, just not in iPhoto!
Thanks in advance for reading and any help offered!
PBG4 1.33 2gig   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   120 gig hd

I got all my pictures AND everything else back, folders, ratings, keywords etc
Fortunately I had a backup of the entire iPhoto library folder, it was about 3 months old (I know shame on me) so I didn't want to just use the entire backup folder and lose 3 months of photos.
So I just copied the AlbumData.xml file and the Library6.iPhoto file. PRESTO all my pictures were back WITH all the folders, keywords etc, etc intact!! (up till the 3 month old backup point).
Then I just re-imported the missing 3 months worth of pictures from the original folder in the iphoto library folder. So all I had to recreate was 3 months worth of customization. WHEW!!
Reading through the discussions it seems there is a fair number of users where iPhoto would go empty, but they knew the images were still on the computer. I am not a programmer, but it seems silly to me the their are files that get re-written everytime iPhoto closes....computers crash. and then what happens to the files? Mine got corrupted, lesson learned BACKUP more frequently!!
Thanks to Old Toad who steered me to the Library6.iPhoto as a possible troublemaker in another thread!
