OSX 10.8.5 Home Folder permissions in AD environment

So I work in a University environment and traditionally we have been using Windows computers, thus a large AD environment. Recently we have been having Mac OSX computers trickle into the environment and I have been the one tasked with making sure everything works. From OS X documentation every version 10.6.8 and above *SHOULD* work in an AD environment, but we are working with 10.7 and above so that shouldn't be a problem.
I have tested adding a 10.7 and 10.8 desktop to the domain and all works fine, I change the log in settings to require username and password, and I can log in fine as a Enterprise Admin, Domain Admin, and Domain User. Now my issue comes in when I'm trying to write files, nothing works. I see that the home directory gets created fine and has the correct permissions, but none of it's subdirectories have the correct permissions. As the local admin I have to go to the folder permissions of the home directory and click the action cog wheel and say "Apply to enclosed items..." is there any way I can streamline this process so that everytime a home directory gets create, all of it's subdirectories are owned and writeable by the user who logged in?

You may need to rebuild permissions on your user account. To do this,boot to your Recovery partition (holding down the Command and R keys while booting) and open Terminal from the Utilities menu. In Terminal, type:  ‘resetpassword’ (without the ’s), hit return, and select the admin user. You are not going to reset your password. Click on the icon for your Macs hard drive at the top. From the drop down below it select the user account which is having issues. At the bottom of the window, you'll see an area labeled Restore Home Directory Permissions and ACLs. Click the reset button there. The process takes a few minutes. When complete, restart.

  • Trying to reset home folder permissions and acls

    I have been having a nightmare of a time with Adobe apps, primarily Premiere Pro, crashing CONSTANTLY and randomly. I have no idea what's causing it and have been going back & forth to no avail for days with Adobe, and trying a bunch of different things. I keep getting an error that says Thread 0 Crashed com.apple.main .......
    I am on a 2014 Mac Pro 12 core, 64GB Ram with dual AMD D700 GPUs, running Yosemite.
    The steps I have tried have included messing around with various permissions within the Adobe folders and enclosed files. That led me to then need to completely reinstall my OS from recovery mode. I tried multiple times going into recovery mode, doing resetpassword in Terminal, and then trying to reset the home folder permissions from there, but it just never says done and don't think it's doing anything. I have let it sit for hours and not gotten anything back on it.
    I searched the forums and found an older thread where Linc Davis had posted a terminal code to put in, and tried that. Many said that worked for them, but it didn't seem to change anything for me. After doing that, i did go back into recovery mode and see if i could reset the permissions from there, but again, just greyed out the Done button and stayed for hours.
    I am at a complete loss on what to do and really need some help. I am days overdue on projects because of Adobe's crashes and because of the time I've been wasting trying to re-sort out the IT stuff that I don't really know much about. Can you please help? ANYONE?

    it's only been with adobe applications, but unfortunately, they are just not being helpful. I'll paste a crash report here below, maybe you can make sense of it. They can't seem to and I certainly can't. I really don't know what to do. All they keep doing is asking me more questions, which to me doesn't make a whole lot of sense in itself. I would think that an Adobe Crash Report should tell Adobe exactly what's causing the crash. So frustrating and right now highly detrimental to my business.
    The only thing that is happening of question besides the Adobe apps crashing is that I can't reset my home folder permissions through the recovery mode. I tried last night and let it run overnight and this morning, it still had not said 'Done'. So i'm not sure if that denotes a different problem somewhere

  • Reset Home Folder Permissions and ACLs spinning forever

    Hi, all.
    The performance of my Intel iMac (circa 2008 or so) had degraded quite a bit, so I decided it was time to reinstall Snow Leopard. Did so, then restored my apps and documents via Time Machine. Suddenly, it was impossible to launch most applications (Chrome, the App Store, etc.) Repairing permissions using Disk Utility did not help.
    Upon reading an article on this, I booted from the Snow Leopard disk, entered the Reset Password utility, and attempted to Reset Home Folder Permissions and ACLs. The process has been running for several hours with no end in sight and no error message. Is this normal? And if not, what should my next step be?
    Thanks so much!

    Do a force shutdown holding the power button and reboto to get into the machine (might have to hold Shift Key) and get a copy of your users files off and onto a external storage drive (not TimeMachine)
    Then start all over using this method select the entire drive to zero erase and install, that should clear the bad sector issue it appears your having.
    How to erase and install Snow Leopard 10.6
    Do not restore anything from TimeMachine, it's corrupted data, reinstall all apps fresh from original sources and only files (you know are good) from the storage drive.
    This is known as a "fresh install method" later you can update TM to backup this newer and cleaner configuration.
    Why is my computer slow?

    once you get all tweaked, clone it.

  • Fluxbox and home folder permissions

    Hi all,
    I'm fighting with a very strange problem. Fluxbox is not working properly.
    gnome and kde start correctly, fluxbox, seems to start, but only conky appears, no bars! I added -log /home/mioutente/.fluxbox/log to the exec fluxbox command in .fluxbox/startup, and I get this messages:

    And why is your question titled fluxbox and home folder permissions?? I can't see any problems with access permissions.
    because...the problem appears the first time after I copied my whole home directory on an external hd...so i thought it was a permission problem. I'm sorry...I should have left this events...after last post change.
    I solved reinstalling my system, I thought I made some strange experiment and it was not working because of those.
    I really don't know what should be the problem...I'm sorry if i'm answering so late...but some days ago my laptop died...(dell xps m1330) and it's more than 4 days I'm waiting for technical support )
    I hope there would be a feasible solution to this problem!

  • How do I restore the user to the home folder permissions?

    I just got an iMac from a friend and had changed the username and password for the administrator user.  Then I was going to change the home folder name.  I was looking at the info on the home folder (which at this point is still tied to the old user).  I inadvertantly removed the user from the permissions before adding the new username or even allowing all users to access the home folder.  Now I cannot access the home folder at all.  How do I restore the permissions to the home folder or add the user back to the allowed users with access to the home folder?

    dalefromdallas,
    First you should do a clean install of the computer, while your friend may have included apps, they do not belong to you unless your friend gave y ou the install media and license codes. Considering the machine is also running 10.9.2. this machine will be forever tied to his AppleID which exposes him financially. You should get the 10.6.X DVD from your friend (I'm assuming he upgrade from 10.6.x at some point) and do an erase and install, then update it to 10.6.8 then upgrade yourself to 10.9.2 Mavericks. Then you will have a clean system, otherwise you will be working with a pretty kludged system that will probably be trouble.

  • Home folder permissions problem in Lion

    Well, there are 2 problems really, but I'm hoping that curing one will cure the other. I have an iMac and a MacBook Pro both running Lion. I can connect to the iMac from the MBP using afp but trying to connect to the MBP I get a "connection refused' warning which seems to be affecting a number of Lion users. My home folder is not shared so I can't solve the problem by unsharing it as some have. (If I turn off afp, smb works ok.)
    What I have noticed though is that the permissions for the public folder and home folder on the MBP seem to be incorrect. They are:
    username - read & write
    unknown user - read only
    everyone - read only
    whereas on the iMac they are:
    username - read & write
    staff- read only
    everyone - read only
    How do I correct the permissions for my MacBook Pro's home folder? I'm hoping that this will also solve the file sharing issues.

    Too bad this solution is hard to find... Let's mark it as solved so others can find it easily.
    Glad it saved you a clean install!

  • [Solved] How to restore lost home folder permissions

    I recently moved a shared folder with a few hundred home folders in it to fill up drive space. After I moved it i made sure that it was reshared exactly the same way only to discover that each users full rights, originally granted by active directory, were
    missing. I searched the internet for hours looking for a solution and never found one, so when I created my own i decided to share my method.
    We use a simple structure. Use AD to create the home folders (\\servername\share\%username%) which gives the user full control of their folder, then enable access based enumeration so they can only see their
    own folder. What i did was move the already created folders to a temporary location, then select all users in AD and recreate the home folders using the method above. Now I have all of the correct folder/permissions, they're just empty. Next I copy the old
    folders back, and merge them with the new folders. What I end up with is essentially all of the original files in newly created folders with the correct permissions.
    Hope this can save someone the hours I wasted in research.

    Thanks JaMere! That was helpful. I was about to restore permissions from backup, but instead tried your method out of curiosity. Worked like a champ!

  • How to reset home folder permissions ?

    Hello everyone I have a pretty tough problem that I would really like to fix
    Here's the little story... I bought a macbook pro (mid 2010) and I accidentally broke it.. I made a ghost of my hard drive before erasing it and sending the macbook to be repaired. It came back as I sent it, because the cost to repair was almost equal as getting a new macbook..
    So I bought the brand new (2011) macbook pro and I'm trying to get my data back onto it.. I took out the new hard drive, ran my ghost program (Ghost 4 Linux in RAW mode in case you want to know) and I put the hard drive back into the mac. I just won't boot.
    It appears that the new macbooks require some new kexts or files to be able to boot up. I couldn't even boot my 10.6.3 retail DVD...
    I reinstalled Snow Leo with no problems, and I wanted to copy directly my previous home folder (or all content inside) to my new one. It appears to be impossible, because I had a password on my previous macbook.. Chmod or Chown (as root) do nothing at all, programs like Batchmod or permission reset do not work either. Linux can't reset permissions saying it's a "read only file system" (although I can see the name of all files inside folders while it's trying to change permissions even if it always fails). I can't manually modify permissions by pressing Command + i because it says I have "custom access rights"...
    I'm really stuck on this one, I've done some searching and I'm astonished I couldn't find any answer about that. I'm pretty sure many pple have had that problem before.
    I hope you guys will have an answer for me, otherwise I've lost all my family pictures, music, documents and.....everything else ?
    Thank you.

    No, I didn't say that. If you weren't using FileVault, you should be fine, unless something is wrong with the old drive.
    In the Finder, select the icon of the drive you're trying to copy from, and open the Info window. In the Sharing & Permissions section, there's a checkbox labeled "Ignore ownership on this disk." If that box is not checked, click the lock icon in the corner of the window, authenticate with your administrator name and password, check the box, then try the copy again.

  • Home Folder Permissions

    I need to move all of my User's Home Folders to another server that will be running Windows Server 2013 R2 Standard.  The reason for this is capacity on the current server is low.
    I am trying to understand how permissions work as on the old system and test the folder creation on the new system, if someone wanted to see all the user folders and access them, they can.
    I created a g:\Add-Data\Users directory and shared the User directory as User$.  Administrators and SYSTEM have Owner rights under Share and Everyone has full control under Advanced Sharing.  Under Advanced Security Permissions, Administrators
    have Full Control, This folder, subfolders and files, Domain Users have List folder/read data and Create Folders / append data permissions to This Folder Only. Creator Owner has Full Control for Subfolders and files only.
    Still if I take a domain user and try to map a network drive to \\server\Users$, I am presented with the other user directories, can access them and create in them.
    How do I fix this?

    Hi,
    According to your description, do you mean that you want every user in the domain has the ability to access other users’ profiles and modify them?
    If so, would you please tell us why do you want to achieve that?
    Personally, I would not want this to happen, because every user’s user profile is private. When a domain admin create a user profile for a user, the owner is the user itself by default, even the domain admin doesn’t have
    access permissions.
    If you are just trying to find out how permission works, here is the thing:
    The owner of a file has the ultimate control over the file, he/she can decide who has access, and what kind of access, to his/her file and who doesn’t. As the domain admin has full control over the domain, he/she can take
    ownership on any files in the domain.
    In your case, if the owner of one user profile has granted the read access to all the other domain users in the domain, then all domain users can read this user profile. In the meantime, if the owner wants to keep his/her
    profile private, and hasn’t given any others read permission, then others can’t read this profile.

  • Users accessing admin home folder

    I have two drives in my MBP. A solid state boot drive and the internal drive for all other files including the home folders. There are three users and all of their home folders reside on the internal drive, not the boot drive. My problem is that the non-admin users somehow have access to the admin home folder and all its files, while the admin cannot access the others users' home folders. In other words, the permissions are all wrong. However, I have checked the permissions and my (the admin) home folder has the same permissions as the users' home folder. Hopefully that makes sense.
    I have searched for a fix and repairing the home folder permissions through the recovery partition reset password utility seemed like it could be the solution but when I tried that, it did not allow me to access the true home folders on the non-boot drive, it only allowed me to repair the permissions on the boot drive home folders, which is not where the true home folders are located.
    I'm on OSX 10.9.2.
    Thanks for any and all your help. Hopefully my issue is clear and someone out there knows a fix!

    You are correct, it is not supported though a program or user can do it with root access. That is very strange, I would take it to an Apple Authorized Service Provider or get somebody who can actually look at it.

  • "The home folder...isn't located in the usual place or can't be accessed" after 10.9 AD bind.

    Okay a little backstory here because I'm trying to eliminate or identify what I feel might be a bug in OS X Mountain Lion and Mavericks.  Just FYI, I'm not our institution's AD admin, I just have rights to bind and query for this and that, but I can't make changes or really investigate our AD domain server/s:
    So we're an educational institution with lots of adjuncts that come and go each year.  Recently in August, I had about 5 cases where these adjuncts couldn't log in because of a cryptic "login failed" error.  I have my macs setup to create mobile accounts without confirmation.  I don't want ANY syncing going on just local user accounts created, but something in the profile creation process demands access to their network home folder.  Well these 5 users were brand spanking new and somehow didn't have permissions to their own network home folders that everyone else hasn't had a problem with before.  I had our admins fix the permissions, and they were able to login thereafter.  Our admins are still looking for what might have caused this, but still don't know....
    Recently I've been testing the same AD bind script I've always used on Mavericks.  It's a simple bash "dsconfigad" customized for our institution.  It seems to work successfully but on the login screen I get no usual "arrow" that allows me to back out and click "Other" and login to AD.  I reseated the Ethernet cord and checked the AD configuration in Directory Utility - it was all set correctly as per the script parameters.  When I clicked OK and exited out to the login screen, the Other option was working correctly.  I was able to login with my own credentials just fine.
    I needed to tweak my image a little so I wiped and reloaded the machine with the new image (nothing relevant to binding and users was changed).  Got the same "no arrow" issue and tried the same steps, which again worked after some monkeying around.  I tried to login with my credentials - failed.  Now I get "The home folder for user 'my username' isn't located in the usual place or can't be located."  I went into a local user admin account and tried to add my home folder manually, nogo.  I logged onto a windows machine and tried to mount the same home folder in Windows - access denied - this is the SAME type of thing that ended up happening to my adjuncts.  I don't know if they are related but it's certainly a strange coincidence.
    How could testing AD binds change my home folder permissions, or possibly even corrupt the folder altogether?  The network share/home folder that our macs smb communicate with as per the bind settings are on a windows server (to the best of my knowledge).  My guess previously with the adjuncts error is that despite the fact that I don't need or want the profiles created to sync, the default options turns this on for mobile accounts even though it doesn't select any actual folders for syncing, but because it still tries some sort of "handshake" or something initially, first logins fail without network home folder permissions.  Now it seems like something in the initial profile creation process might actually be corrupting the network home folder or changing its permissions.
    I would post the bind script but I'm not sure it's relevant, as another mac admin in a different area ran into the same error with one of his new users and he bound manually, not with a script.
    I'm kind of new to this sysadmin stuff, so does anyone have any ideas or suggestions to track down the cause of this and possibly fix it?  The network share admin can fix my permissions, but if I could break it when it was working once, I foresee this happening again.

    Here's the script I used previously that is not connecting to AD "completely" that causes the errors mentioned (I'm replacing institution info with "xxx"):
    echo -n "This computer needs to be renamed and bound to Active Directory.  Please enter the XXX Inventory Number from the affixed XXX label on the machine: "
        read userinput
        echo -n "Enter the XXXAdmin password (you will still be asked to enter this for system configuration changes): "
        read -s xxxpassword
        scutil --set ComputerName $userinput
        scutil --set LocalHostName $userinput
    # Active Directory Bind Script For OS X Client
        # Modified by Wade Wei according to previous popular bind script
        # Adapted for xxx by xxx
        echo "Binding to Active Directory…"
        echo -n "Enter AD admin username: "
        read adusername
        echo -n "Enter AD admin password (please wait after password submitted, do not press any keys): "
        read -s adpassword
        #Basic parameters
        computerid=$userinput
        fqdn="ad.xxx.edu"
        username=$adusername
        password=$adpassword
        #Advanced parameters
        alldomains="enable"
        localhome="enable"
        protocol="smb"
        mobile="enable"
        mobileconfirm="disable"
        useuncpath="enable"
        user_shell="/bin/bash"
        admingroups="domain admins,enterprise admins,xxx,xxx"
        namespace="domain"
        packetsign="require"
        packetencrypt="require"
        localuser="XXXAdmin"
        localpassword=$xxxpassword
        # Bind to AD
        echo "Binding to AD - do not interrupt…"
        dsconfigad -add $fqdn -username $username -password "$password" -computer $computerid -force -packetencrypt $packetencrypt -localuser $localuser -localpassword $localpassword
        sleep 5
        #Configure advanced options
        echo "Configuring AD for Mac OS X…"
        dsconfigad -localuser $localuser -localpassword $localpassword -alldomains $alldomains -localhome $localhome -groups "$admingroups" -mobile $mobile -mobileconfirm $mobileconfirm -namespace $namespace -packetsign $packetsign -useuncpath $useuncpath -protocol $protocol -shell $user_shell -nopreferred
    Can anyone tell me if I need to update the script for Mavericks, and how?  Or should this be working and the bug is in Mavericks itself?

  • ERROR You do not have enough access privileges / Music Folder Permissions

    OS...W XP iTunes 7.6.2.9 HP. Classic 60 GB HP iPod. I have this error when I try to import some CD's. Am trying to import a brand new cd I just bought and error reads...
    *"Error occured while converting the file "Large Time" ( or whatever the 1st songs name may be). You do not have enough ACCESS PRIVILEGES for this operation.*
    iTunes could not save your music folder because you do not have write access. Check permissions on your Music folder and folders in your Music Folder, then try converting this file again".
    Well I've tried every way I can think to check the permissions and am clueless. I do know that after going through my pc settings for folders, that after some time, I was able to save the last playlist and sync it. I've no idea why, but I do know I have this problem frequently. And it's BAaaaack.
    If you find or have the answer please post...ty. MP3 players seem more user friendly, using WMP, but this iPod was more for the money.

    To fix Home folder permissions
    Open the Terminal application in the Utilities folder.  At the command line prompt enter or paste the following command line:
    sudo chown -R `id -un`:`id -gn` ~
    Press RETURN.  You will be prompted to enter your admin password which will not be echoed.

  • "Don't have permission" to alter home folder.

    I want to delete an item from folder DOCUMENTS in my home folder.  Message says that I don't have permission, and the INFORMATION window says that it is locked.  The lock checkbox is shaded out.  What is wrong?

  • Keep loosing access to my home folder

    Hi,
    Could you please help to diagnose my MBP? I've been struggling to do it for a couple of weeks now
    The MacBook malfunction in two different ways:
    A. Keep loosing access to my home folder (usually when I'm browsing in Safari):
    1. The system stops to being responsive for 15-30 seconds, and then
    2. In Finder -> Places my home folder (wk) alias is missing, and I get the error "The alias "wk" can't be opened because the original item can't be found"
    3. In /Users the permissions to the folder are being changed (I haven't noted what exactly are the permissions), and I get the error "The folder "wk" can't be opened because you don't have permission to see it's contents"
    4. kernel.log shows I/O errors for disk0s2
    5. Disk utility verification shows the filesystems is in a perfect state, but the regular problems with /System/Library/java/* permissions won't be fixed
    6. System reboot fixes the issue
    B. Kernel panic (the very first I've seen happened four weeks ago, and then three followed during the previous week)
    1. I got the usual grey screen, and reboot
    2. kernel.log shows Page Fault, in all cases with kernel as the "app in focus"
    I've taken the following steps to diagnose the problems:
    1. Disk Utility verification shows the filesystems is in a perfect state,
    2. There're always a problem with permissions in /System/Library/java/... (always fixable)
    3. Run extended AHT in a loop (no problems found) - didn't help
    4. Reinstalled the OS - didn't help with problem A, although problem B hasn't happened ever since (a coincidence?)
    5. Put back original RAM dice  - didn't help with problem A
    6. Zeroed the HDD and installed from a scratch - didn't help with problem A
    7. Exchanged HDD to a brand new one (was planning to do that either way) and restored the OS from point 6. - didn't help with problem A

  • Why does my Applications Folder permissions not include me?

    Added after posting (please still answer the original ?s if you have time): I just read the post about a similar situation in 2009. So, if I'm the only admin in the admin group, and the admin group has Read & Write access, why do I have to enter my password to make changes and/or why do I get error messages about lack of permissions?
    OK. Got a new MacBook Pro. Ported over my stuff from the old one that died a horrible death (the battery was recognized as being installed, but no charge ability, lost all interactions with the internal hard drive and short term memory... worked after I removed the internal hard drive and started up via USB connection... short term memory stayed dead). Well, I'm getting error messages on my new MBP saying I do not have permissions to make changes to some documents and apps (kind of like my previous MBP just before it died so I'm a bit uncomfortable about that). I repaired permissions, no joy. I then changed the Document folder's permissions to make me sole Read & Write access, all others no access. I then changed the Apps folder to just add me with Read & Write access, no changes to existing access (system & admin Read & Write, everyone Read only). I stopped getting the error messages (knock-on-wood!). I just ran permissions repair and my "custom access" has been removed from the Apps folder. I'm fully expecting error messages and want to know why that access is set that way?
    Also, my Apps are at the root level, not in my Home folder... is that why? Should I move my apps to my home folder? Nobody else is ever going to use this computer.
    Thanks
    BTW: please do not answer that I shouldn't change permissions. I am aware of that admonition. However, I bet the admonitor is not getting no-permissions error messages every day...

    Your application folder is owned by the system. You do not need your user on the application folder. Only 3rd party applications installed by you will possibly have your user id in it.
    More likely the problems you had were due to your home folder permissions. If you want to reset your home folder to default permissions, follow this:
    Resetting the home folder permissions can resolve problems with your user account on your Mac.
    Turn on the Mac whilst holding down cmd + R. You can let go once you see a spinning dial. You will then see the ”Mac OS X Utilities” screen.
    On the top menu, click Utilities, then click Terminal.
    Type resetpassword and press Enter.
    Click on your main hard drive.
    In the dropdown box under “Select the user account” make sure to select your username.
    Underneath where it says “Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs”, click the Reset button.
    Press cmd + Q to quit the Reset Password application.
    Press cmd + Q again to quit the Terminal.
    Press cmd + Q one more time and click Restart.
    Click Mac OS X Utilities in the top left of the screen and click the Restart button.
