Other types of URLs

One thing I got used to with the older system was the ability to create link with URL protocols other than just "http://", namely "file://" and "applescript://".
In a post where you wanted to direct the user to a particular location in the Finder it was a lot easier to do something like:
Locate the following folder in the Finder (click on the link to locate that item in the Finder):
/Library/Contextual Menu Items/
than to do:
Locate the "Contextual Menu Items" folder inside the "Library" folder on your hard drive. (here you wait patiently while they find it, and hope they don't get the Contextual Menu Items folder in one of the other domains).
Or, in OS X 10.3, Apple introduced the ability for the Script Editor application to "open" links that were encoded using the "applescript://" protocol. So in a post you could create a link that a user could click on, which would launch Script Editor and fill the contents of the script window with the script. This would save the user from having to copy and paste, and from having to worry about any stray characters that might get copied and prevent the script from compiling. See this page for more info. Using Convert Script To Markup Code, you could also format your script to look the same way it would in a Script Editor window. This made it great for posting in the AppleScript forums. One problem that the older system had is the 4000 character limit on posts often prevented some scripts from being able to fit in one post. With the longer post limit of the new system, it'd be great if we could use AppleScript links.
If someone has an issue where a solution would involve typing something in Terminal, I'd usually "wrap" it with an AppleScript and let the user execute it by simply pressing the Play button in the Script Editor window. That's usually a lot safer and easier with users that are unfamiliar with the Terminal and CLI. An example:
Click the following link to open the AppleScript in Script Editor, then press the green "Play" button to execute it.
--Open this script in a new Script Editor window.
property shls : "System/Library/Frameworks/ApplicationServices.framework/Frameworks/LaunchServi ces.framework/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user"
set result_ to button returned of (display alert "Rebuilding the Launch Services Database will require the Finder to quit, and you to Restart after the rebuild is complete." message "Do you wish to continue with the rebuild?" buttons {"Cancel", "Rebuild"})
if (result_ = "Rebuild") then
    tell application "Finder"
        delay 2
        quit
    end tell
    display dialog "Quitting the Finder..." giving up after 6 buttons {""}
tell application "System Events" to set list_ to name of every application process
    if list_ contains "Finder" then
        do shell script "killall Finder"
        display dialog "Finder not responding. Forcing Finder to quit..." giving up after 3 buttons {""}
    end if
    do shell script shls
set result_ to button returned of (display alert "The Launch Services Rebuild is complete. Click Restart to restart your Mac." buttons {"Shut Down", "Restart"})
if result_ = "Shut Down" then
tell application "System Events" to shut down
else if result_ = "Restart" then
tell application "System Events" to restart
    end if
end if
So, the problem I'm seeing is that the links won't work.
Is there any known workaround or can this be added as a feature request?
TIA

Rather than my generic example, I figured I'd post an example of where I'd have used this ability today.
In the following thread the person was having issues with the SyndicationAgent appearing in the Dock. While it's normal for the app to run periodically, it isn't supposed to be visible, since it has LSBackgroundOnly set to 1 in its Info.plist file. This to me suggests two possibilities: either the value in the Info.plist file is wrong, or the Launch Services database (which holds cached information about apps) is corrupt.
A quick way to confirm that the file is okay would be to run:
--Open this script in a new Script Editor window.
do shell script "defaults read /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/Syndication.framework/Versions/A/Resources/Sy ndicationAgent.app/Contents/Info LSBackgroundOnly"
and assure that it returns a "1" rather than "0". If it returned a 1, then rebuilding the LS database (which is what the first example was) should solve the problem. Otherwise an Archive and Install might be in the user's future.
Running that shell command would be a lot easier than trying to locate the file directly, which involves navigating through 2 bundles (one of which is an opaque application package).
Anyhow, I know your list of things to fix is pretty long, so I'll let you get back to it.

  • How to type a URL if Google search bar removed for privacy

Because it appears that in Safari it is impossible to remove the Google Search Bar that's off to the right at the top without also removing the now connected URL Location bar to its left, I removed both. I had noticed that when I did this in Camino, I could still go to a web page by clicking Command L for Open Location (found in the File dropdown menu of most browsers).
But in Safari just now, when I remove the Google search bar that Apple has hard coded to be inseparable from the Location bar to its left, I find I cannot use the File / Open Location command (which I mentioned is Command key - L) and therefore -- is my browser useless if I do not want to document my travels on the world wide web with Google's databases by having the Search Bar up?
In other words is it not possible to enter a URL into Safari in a blank and open the URL Location if you remove the Google Search Bar?
Is the only way to get to a webpage after removing that item to use one's old bookmarks to get to a page?
Or is this a bug and is my "Command key - L" (Open Location command) supposed to be working? I also started to test this with Firefox but it appears my Firefox browser does not have this problem so my Open Location bar remains even if I remove a search bar and the removable search bar it does have is not tied to google in particular, I don't think, in Firefox even if I remove the search bar though I never use a search bar anyway because I don't care to go to any search engine unless I type their URL into my Location bar personally. That's just my preference because I don't trust having third party search bars forced into the browser design.
Is this really true as it appears that there's no way to open a Location in Safari without having the annoying Search Bar up? Is Open Location disabled without the Google Search bar?
If so, it looks like that, of my several browsers, the only one that won't allow me to Open Location (go to a webpage that I type into a Location bar) if I remove the Google Search bar is Safari. I am finding I can successfully extricate myself from Google search if I use Opera, Camino, and Firefox and select Remove after right clicking on the search bar.
Why would the industry be trying to force this Google data mining and surf habits info collection on people? Evidently because Apple would rather take the money from google for forcing google into our browser than protect its customers privacy? I hope this disease does not spread to the other browsers left for me to use. What a monopoly google is building. Too bad antitrust litigation is dead.
(If this is true, this is depressing to me because I had set Safari to be my primary browser. But it seems the least secure browser anyway (compared to using NoScript with Firefox) so I guess I'll have to avoid using it (except on those few pages that won't work without it) until Apple starts taking people's privacy a little more seriously instead of sneaking in more and more features that force us into an unholy logging relationship with Big Brother Google. And I'm disappointed in this development also because I used to like Google before I realized its lawyers were so dedicated to writing privacy policies that are as vague as possible and as unprotective of privacy as possible. I would like to use Google more if they would just stop taking 100 miles when a person gives an inch by using their search engine. I get nervous any time I have to use anything connected with them as things stand and I really wish that would improve and that google will improve its privacy policies rather than finding new ways to log every movement a person makes on the Web.)

The question posed in this thread was:
How do I type a URL such as "www.apple.com" etc. into a blank in SAFARI to go to the URL if I remove the Google search bar?
I cannot seem to get Open Location (Command - L) to function if I remove the Google search bar. Removing the Google Search Bar seems to also remove the location bar to type into. This is not the case in Opera, Camino, or Firefox, so I am wondering if my Safari is just corrupted. If the only way to have the option of Open Location (Command L) is to put the Google Search bar back in, which means the two are connected, does that mean that Google is able to record all url's typed in the Location bar even if you don't use the Search bar? I believe the story used to be that any time you type a url into a google search engine, google records your IP and search; so I'm wondering if Apple has now set up the Location bar in Safari in a deal with Google to let Google track every URL you type into the location bar if it is the case that the Location bar is inseparable from Google Search.

  • I got the new 8.0 version of firefox today and now when I put a new URL in an open tab or type a URL in a new tab, NOTHING HAPPENS!! HELP!!!!!

Since I installed the 8.0 Firefox version earlier today I have been unable to get to new Web pages by typing in their URLs. If I click on a link in a tab which was open before the install ( and was called up by Restore Session after I installed the new version) - say in one of my email messages in the Hotmail tab or a tab with another Web page showing - all is well and I go to the new page. Same if I click on the Back arrow: I can go back and forward to pages which have already been opened in the prior session.
However, if I type a URL to a new site into the address/location bar, OR open a new tab and enter a URL there ... when I press the Enter key NOTHING AT ALL happens. Same thing if I click on the Go to new address arrow that appears at the right side of the location bar - nothing. This has happened over and over.
What is going on? If I use IE, everything works just fine, so it must be something in Firefox. Do I need to just go back the the previous version of Firefox which I had before this latest update? As it is now, I can't go to any pages I haven't looked at in my restored session, which is not only frustrating but makes Firefox pretty useless for future use. Or, if it's some other problem, any ideas on what and how to fix it? Thanks.

It is possible that Aperture is saving the edits in its database and there's no hard copy of the photo available for iDVD to refresh to?  Just ran a test with a photo on the Desktop that I added to iDVD.  After editing it with PS and saving to replace the original on the Desktop iDVD reflected the change.
I then repeated the same test but on a photo in iPhoto and it's edited version would not refresh in iDVD.  I had to go back to the Media Brower to get the edited version and use it.  It would not refresh automaticallly if edited in iPhoto.  Aperture and iPHoto share the same library so I imaging it's the same with Aperture.

  • Can i add a protocol type to URL?

    Hi Guys,
I need to add a protocol type to url - udp, so that when i insert a link that starts with udp:// it won't fall.
Can i do it?! And if it's possible, how?
    Regards,
    snayit

Uhm. You actually have to add a protocol to
the URL.He's asking how to teach the URL class to communicate with the server using "udp://" in stead of "http://" or "ftp://", etc.
I don't have a good answer, I'm afraid. My first thought is to extend URL and intercept URLs using the "udp" protocol and write it all yourself as part of that extended class. For good or bad, however, the URL Class's getContent methods are final, so you can't override them to add your own behavior.
If you're going to the trouble of teaching something to make server requests by a protocol the URL class is clueless about, you might as well just start from scratch in a new class.
But if someone knows something I don't, I'm listening. :)

  • Build a blank/other type of page which can show links to other pages

Can someone please tell me how to build a blank/other type of page which can show links to other pages? I mainly want a page to show 3 links, once someone clicks on it, then it will go to a specified page. I tried using URL, but that did not work. Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thank you very much for your help in advance.
    -Grace

Do a region (probably a HTML-based one is fine), enter in the HTML for your links, and that should be it. What didn't work about this?
Your links probably should appear like this in your coding (use substitution variables):
    f?p=&APP_ID.:3:&APP_SESSION.
In the above example, "&APP_ID." will resolve dynamically to the application ID that you are in, "3" is page 3 (change this to whatever page you want the link to be), and "&APP_SESSION." is the existing session number (if you don't include this, the user will receive a new session ID if the destination page is public or will be intercepted annoyingly to log in and get a new session ID which you probably don't want).
Do not include the full http path. Just start with f?p... and everything is assumed to be relative to Apex on the current environment.
Those are effectively the minimum requirements for a URL in Apex to go from one page to another in an app. You can add to that the additional URL parameters for Request value, Set items with values, clear cache, reset pagination, etc. if you need to. Check the Apex online help under "understanding URL syntax" for details on these.

I installed iTunes 7.6 last night after the keynote. Could that be causing the problem???

  • Why is screen blank when click "new tab", where is the window to type in url address

I cannot see the URL address of page I am on if I want to cut/paste and keep it, also I have to keep opening another mozilla firefox over and over as the newtab feature shows a blank page each time. Where is the area to type in URL address? How come I cannot have a series of pages open typing a new address on each page like I used to?

I found my own answer. If this happens, go to "view", "toolbars," and put a check next to "navigation toolbar."

  • Redirects when I click a link, but works if I type the URL

I have a MacBook with Tiger and Safari. All currently updated. I have an email with a link to the person's homepage. When I click it, it goes to his old homepage, which used to be listed in his emails. If I type the URL in the link, it goes to the new page, as it should. It doesn't do this on any of my other computers (two macs, two pcs).
Can't be a host file, or typing the URL wouldn't help.
I used Onyx to clean cache, including system cache. Cleaned cache from Safari. Deleted the Safari cache from my libray/users/caches/ folder. Restarted, rebooted. Deleted cookies, deleted history.
What could be doing this? More perplexing, how would it know what link this guy USED to use in his emails, but no longer does?
    Spooky...
MacBook   Windows XP   Tiger, of course

Interesting suggestion. I installed PithHelmet (Pretty cool, by the way) and told it to remove the referrer headers. No joy. Still doing the redirect. You are on to something as to how it's doing it, though. I'm using Yahoo mail. If I log into another mail account using this machine, and click this link in a message, it goes to the right page. So, the link is only broken on my machined, while logged into Yahoo mail AS ME.
If it's any more help, the correct site is an iWeb page. The old one it keeps sending me to instead is on geocities.

  • Safari - where to type my url

I have this reasonably new 13" macbook, now, unlike my desktop, when launching Safari I am not presented with anywhere to type a URL or search the web....
    How obscure...
Does anyone know where these facilities are hidden.....?
    yours in anticipation...

  • Until latest update, I used to type in URL and hit enter. Now I have to click on the arrow. Any way to change back that older feature?

That issue can be caused by the AVG Safe Search extension
    *https://support.mozilla.org/kb/Troubleshooting+extensions+and+themes
Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).
*Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.
