Overlaying Several Video Clips to be viewed Simultaneously

Hello,
I'm a new FCE user. I'm trying to take several video clips and overlay them so that they all show simultaneously. I have a long clip I want to break into pieces, make them somewhat transparent and have them all play as on clip at one time at an increased speed. The intent is to take a long piece and make make it much shorter and more interesting to watch.
Any ideas?

Hello and welcome to the forum.
Select your long clip in the Viewer, set in and out points for the first part you want to use, put it in V1 on your Timeline. Go back to the long clip in the Viewer, set new in and out points for the second part you want to use, put it in V2 on top of the clip in V1. Continue that process as many times as you need to.
Adjust transparency by clicking the clip overlays button (zig zag lines at the bottom left of the Timeline window). When you do so, a black horizontal line appears near the top of each video track in the Timeline. Click and drag the line down to decrease the opacity of the clip.
If you don't already have one, you'd be very wise to purchase an instructional book. Two excellent choices are Final Cut Express Editing Workshop by Tom Wolsky (frequent contributor to this forum) and Apple Pro Training Series: Final Cut Express by Diana Weynand. Each is around $30 on Amazon.

  • Why do sample video clips download while viewing

Can I view sample video clips without having them download too? I feel like an idiot, as I made some adjustment for this on my macbook, but can't seem to figure out that same adjustment for my new imac.

Thank you, but that doesn't do it. My macbook has the "save movies in disk cache" checked and I can still view mpg,wmv or quicktime clips without them downloading.

  • Can Compressor burn a batch of several video clips to one DVD?

I'm trying to compile a batch of video clips to burn to a single AVCHD DVD-R.  It looks like I can Create Blu-ray Disc job action for each job or video, but I want to burn one disk to contain all the video clips in the batch.  Is this possible with Compressor 3.5?
I've found that it's possible to do this with Final Cut Pro, after transcoding all the video and putting it in one timeline, then File>Share.  But I was hoping to eliminate the step of transcoding the video to save time and memory, and speed up the process.
    Thanks for any help.

Ben, thanks for the info.  I assume I should ingest the videos as ProResLT with a Compressor droplet, rather than Log and Transfer w/ FCP.  Looks like that doubles the size of the video -- not too bad.  I just want to streamline the workflow as much as possible.  I don't want to shell out $100 for Toast right now.

  • Synching one audio clip amongst several video clips

I got media from a client:
3 x video clips (with camera-mic audio attached)
    and
1 (one) long continuous audio clip recorded seperately, which speaks to ALL three video clips
The audio guy did NOT start/stop his recording when the camera guy start/stopped his camea. (Hence, the three video clips, versus the ONE long continous audio clip.)
The audio guy did NOT clap-slate (Argh!)
I went to "synchronize" the clips in FCPX. The first video clip synched up just fine.
However, the other two video clips did not.
Q: How can I help FCPX along to synchronize the one, long conitnous audio clip to the three SEPERATE video clips?

If the three video clips string out with the single audio file, in the inspector assign the sane camera angle to all three clips and them make a multicam clip of all four items.

  • Downloaded kindle app on ipad. Bought a photography book that included some video clips - I can view the video footage but have no audio!!

DDownloaded kindle app on my ipad, then bought a photography book which included some video clips - i can watch the video clips but have no audio!!

You need to find out what type of video it is.  What your describing is what you get when a Video codec (software that allows you to "see" the video) is missing, damaged, or too old for the movie.
Once you identify what kind of movie it is, then you can update the codec.

  • Video clips black when viewed full screen or exported?

I'm just taking my first steps with iMovie - apologies if this is a real newbie question or a FAQ (I have searched for answers already without success).
I've imported some video from my camera (Pentax W90) without a problem. I've split it into clips, selected sections, and added some simple titles and effects - all seems quite easy. I can view my new movie with no problem in the preview window.
However, if I try to view the movie full screen, or export it, the video content is all black. The titles are fine, just none of my video footage. I've tried exporting in various formats and sizes and it's always the same.
Where did I go wrong and how can I fix this?

    *edit
Found workaround for this problem on web.
    1. right click on itunes on your desktop and go to properties.
    2. click on compatibility tab
    3. check box for "Disable display scaling on high dpi settings and apply.
You will get a warning when you open itunes now that display settings are now set to an older version or something like that but just hit ok....and now full screen video! Probably isn't quite as clear as it should be if apple fixed this problem (I mean come on I know there have to be a ton of us out here that use large lcds or plasmas as our monitors so why its not fixed beats me) but hey at least it works in fullscreen mode this way. The major problem with this workaround is that it makes it quite hard to see text and other things in itunes store because they are now quite small. So what Ive had to start doing is keep it on normal settings while I go into itunes, and do my searching and renting and buying videos, then close it, make the changes of the workaround and then reopen it so that I can watch in fullscreen. Yeah its a pain but it works.

  • User defines video clip order for playback

I would like to have a site that has several vieo clips in a
library where the user could drag and drop to a time line for video
playback. I have seen this but am ot sure if it is a third party
    program or created rightin flash.
    For instance
The user sees three short video clips and can view each one.
They can then drag these to any orrd they want in a timeline and
then view all three at once as a "complete video." can anyone
suggest a way or a program for this? thanks, Chris

"You can't" is the sad answer to this questioned topic.
I wanted such a simple move yesterday in Flash, but was literally depressed to learn that you "can't" keyframe a move on a video clip in Flash. Shame on you Adobe! Today, as suggested in this , I am trying to get that same keyframed move in AE, and am failing because keyframes and the graph editor make NO SENSE!!!  So, in Flash "you can't", and now today in AFTER EFFECTS - "you can't either".......
I've been producing broadcast 3D animation for nearly 25 years, and have produced some of the finest complex keyframing in Lightwave, Softimage and 3D Studio Max. I do realize that those are 3D programs, but a keyframe is a keyframe, and the defined functions of bezier vs linear in a graph editor should be consistant everywhere. There is no consistancy of keyframe usage and function WITHIN the Adobe family of animation softwares! Adobe - you lie by telling me that I can keyframe in After Effects - your keyframing is very difficult to manage and unpredictable - and your graph editor is an absolute joke, which deserves deletion! Oh you can keyframe in AE - ONLY if you just want to go from point A to point B with NOTHING ELSE.  Only 2 keyframes at a time, and don't you dare try to mix bezier with linear keyframes in AE either!,,,, lets keep everyone safe now, by keeping keyframing -constrained at Pre-School Levels please.

  • How to crop a video clip for subsequent animation

I have several video clips that I'd like to crop (either with Motion or FCE 3.5) and then animate using Motion, but I'm not sure how to approach the problem.
Specifically, the clips in question are interviews, and my intent is to crop out extra background from them, then have them rotate into view one by one, along with animated pull-quote text, to produce a flowing narrative.  I don't want the full-sized clips to be animated--just the relevant head-centered portions.
I'm a quick learner, so I don't necessarily need a step-by-step solution, but any tips to get me started would be appreciated.
    Thanks!

There are several ways you could do this
-Crop the media (Set the cropping for the source clip, available in the media tab and Inspector.)
-Crop the layer (crop each instance of the clip in the project. Found in the layer properties).
    -Apply a layer mask
    -Apply a matte layer.
If you only need to set the cropping once, I'd recommend the first option.  When you crop the media the center point is always maintained based on the cropping. If you crop using any of the other methods you may have to adjust the anchor point (center) of the layer.

  • Alpha Channel Not Showing On Video Clips

I have imported several video clips that I know have Alpha Channels, but when I import them into the timeline/sequence, the ALPHA Channel is appearing as a black background.  What am I doing wrong or what setting should I check??

There was a known issue that I noticed over a year ago that was discussed in this thread:
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/4831495#4831495
AFAIK it was never solved, but I haven't updated to the latest version of Premiere because of all of the bugs (cough cough)

  • Video clips and iPhone

Have taken many pictures which look good on the iPhone but, does anyone know how i can get the video clips i took with my camera to show? They show fine in iPhoto but nada in the iPhone....!
    TIA

The videos must be converted to an iPod/iPhone format.
Have you imported the video clips into iTunes?
If the video clips can be viewed in iTunes (they should if they can be viewed in iPhoto) but do not transfer to your iPhone after being selected under the Videos tab for your iPhone sync preferences, iTunes includes an option to convert selection for iPod/iPhone. Follow this by selecting the converted video to be transferred to your iPhone.
If this doesn't work, there are 3rd party conversion utilities for this purpose.

  • How do you animate a title placed over video clip

I have been trying to animate a still title that I have placed over a video clip in expert view.  There is only one line.  I have followed the following which I think I got from the Adobe site:
Create a title with animated text
You can easily apply a preset animation to any still title. Text animation presets quickly and easily
animate the characters in your title so that they fade or pop characters into view, or fly in from the
top or bottom of the screen. For example, using the Fade In By Characters preset instantly makes
each separate character in your title fade into view until the title is complete. To preview an
animation, position the pointer on the Animation tab in the Adjust panel.
    1. Do one of the following:
In the Quick view timeline, select the superimposed clip. In the Monitor panel, click the clip,
and then double-click the title text.
In the Expert view timeline, double-click the title clip.
The Adjust panel changes to display the text options.
    2. In the Adjust panel, select an animation preset under the Animation tab.
    3. Do one of the following to apply the preset to the title:
    Click Apply.
Drag the preset to the Monitor window and drop it on top of the title text
I have had no success no matter what I've tried.  I have a mac.  I would value any suggestions.
    Thanks.

Thanks. But let me clarifiy what I suspect Barb's issue is
    a. not selecting the Text in the Text section of the Titler before applying the animation in Animation section of the Titler.
    or
    b. what I did not yet write, not using Default text since Text Animation does not work with Default crawl or roll
    or
    c. trying to use more than one line of text without the use of special procedures.
(I sort of put this thought aside when I replied since Barb wrote
I have been trying to animate a still title that I have placed over a video clip in expert view.  There is only one line.
I interpreted that as only one line of text was typed in the Titler, not that there were two lines of text types.
But, the answer should be one of the 3. More details from Barb should help us to pin point the problem.
I think it was JohnnyO who first pointed out (your forum at few years back) that you can indeed apply Text Animations to more than one line of text in Premiere Elements Titler, but with the use of special maneuvers. I wrote about this and did a detailed step by step and overview on the matter.

  • How do I Edit a MPEG1 video clip with QT Pro?

I have several video clips from my Sony H-1 digital camera that I want to edit. They are in MPEG 1 file format. I have them on my iMac in iPhoto and when I open them in QT Player (bought the Pro key) the Edit features (cut, copy, delete) are greyed out and not usable. I read in another posting that MPEG 1 and 2 cannot be edited. Is this why my edit controls are greyed out? If so, can I convert my video files to something that I can edit? Any help would be most appreciated.
    Forest

A bit of caution. You don't want "clipping" files as they are just still images dragged from a .mov file. You only get "time" if you drag a "selection".
Make a "selection" (timeline) and "drag" this over an existing, or new "blank" movie.
This new file will only show the timeline portion of the file but will be the same file size as the entire "original" MPEG format.
Using MPEG Streamclip will allow you to "edit" and convert to QT formats. These new files will be sized based on the data in the file.
On a Tiger machine you'll notice the green + symbol during your drag. Be sure to use Save As and make the new file "self-contained".
As broke as I am I need all the "free" tools I can find. MPEG Streamclip is now part of of my Mac tools. The conversion to DV Stream alone is great. Being able to control the size (dimensions) and use other export formats is a bonus.

  • Convert several videos into one

I have several video clips that I would like to link together so they would show as one movie or iDVD
    I have iDVD version 6.0.4
Is this possible?? If so will you explain the process?

Mistake to have posted in iDVD '08
My version of iMovie is 6.0.3
    iPhoto version 6.06
    iDVD 6.0.4
These are placed individually in my applications folder.
I could not find an iLife package, just the individual applications.
My video clips are in MPG format.
Should I upgrade to the latest version of iLife?? Does one have to subscribe annually? I hate to have to do this as this is a one time thing.
I will appreciate any help you can offer.
    Thank you so much.

  • Rotating video clip but losing audio?

    this is my situation:
i took a video clip with my digital camera vertically instead of horizontally. so when everything on my camera was imported to iphoto that video clip was imported as a quicktime video. now im trying to figure out a way to rotate the vertical clip so that i dont have to turn my head 90 degrees everytime i watch it. in trying to figure out how to do that, i found an apple download called MPEG Streamclip. That allows me to rotate the clip however two things happens:
    1) the audio is no longer there (the output volume is turned all the way up on the macbook... i promise. i checked at least a dozen times)
    2) the video is now cropped weirdly so that the height is equal to the original width of the vertical video.
help? ive never used imovie before or any of these programs... i just want to enjoy my video...

Here are the instructions for using Streamclip.
You need to be sure to Export to DV--that should prreserve your audio. Before you Export to DV from Streamclip, Set the Zoom to 75% to preserve your dimensions.
Here's how to do it. Put the video clip into iMovie. Export the unrotated clip from iMovie to your desktop as a Full Quality Quicktime movie. Open the Quicktime Movie with Streamclip. From the Streamclip file menu, select Export to DV. When you do that, a panel will open up giving you choices to rotate (i.e., 90%CW (clockwise), etc.) Select the rotation you want. Set the zoom to 75%. Then export the .dv to your desktop and drag the rotated clip into your iMovie project. I have rotated several video clips in this fashion. I understand that you can rotate clips with Quicktime Pro, too, but I have never done it that way (because I don't have Quicktime Pro).
