OVM as virtual machine on managed OVS

Hi All,
Is it possible and good idea to install Oracle VM manager as virtual machine on one of managed server? What pros and cons you see?
Thank for all replies

It depends… as always… if you're heading for a real production environment then, no - I wouldn't run OVMM inside am VM on a VM server that is managed by that particular OVMM. Also, it's very tedious to install, since you will have to get it installed first on a separate (physical) host and set it up, before you can configure a new VM to hold the VM Manager afterwards, where you will basically perform an "emergency" re-installation.
Please note as well, that Oracle requires you to run OVMM against a production Database (Oracle SE/EE), which also should live on a separate host, but where OVMM can be installed on as well - this is the way I have done it: Oracle SE and Oracle VMM on one host.
If you don't care, the details are described on the forum, but I'd only recommend that for non-productive use. Also note, that this is not supported by Oracle (I guess).

  • Register Virtual Machine in OVM manager

    Thanks.

If they are 2.2 (or higher), run */opt/ovs-agent-latest/utils/repos.py -l* and make sure your storage repository is listed. If it is not listed, use the documentation to add the repository and initialize it. That will then make it available and visible to the pool (and thus Oracle VM Manager).

  • VM Manager on virtual machine - best practice

I am setting up a server using Oracle VM to limit the number of cpus available to a virtual machine which will be running an Oracle database.
I have set up a test environment, one Oracle VM Server, and the Oracle VM Manager running on a separate server.
I have read in this forum that I could create a linux virtual machine on the VM Server, and then install the Oracle VM Manager on that.
    Re: Oracle VM Manager installation
To create the linux virtual machine, I used the Oracle VM Manager that I have running on a separate server.
Once I created the linux virtual machine, I installed Oracle VM Manager on it.
From this point, I hoped to create the virtual machine upon which I will run the Oracle database, but I get the following message:
OVM-2008 The Server Pool Master (10.36.64.225) has been registered with some other pool, and can not register it again.
So if running the Oracle VM Manager on a virtual machine on the Oracle VM Server is a good idea, how do I do it?
    Many thanks.

    Hi Tommy,
Thanks for taking the time to reply to my query.
Unfortunately, things didn't go so well.
I ran the commands you listed, checking on the status of each VM manager (the original one, running on separate physical linux server, and the one I want to use, running as a VM guest) between each command:
    /opt/ovs-agent-latest/db/db_del.py master
    - this provided no response, and logout/login from both VM managers showed no changes.
    /opt/ovs-agent-latest/db/db_del.py srv
    10.36.64.225 removed.
    - the oraVMmanager now listed as powered off in the original VM manager.
    /opt/ovs-agent-latest/db/db_del.py srvp
    10.36.64.225 removed.
    - no change in VM Managers
    /opt/ovs-agent-latest/db/db_del.py vm
    /OVS/running_pool/28_oraVMmanager removed.
    - no change to both VM Managers and the guest VM is still running.
    /sbin/service ovs-agent restart
    option 2 - guest VM shutdown (28_oraVMmanager)
I couldn't get the guest VM to restart
service xendomains start failed saying there is a lockfile:
    /var/lock/subsys/xendomains
I haven't been able to get past this point other than to re-install and start again.
Maybe there is another way to do this...
If I install the VM Server, can I create a linux VM Guest using command line rather than from the VM Manager?
Once I have a VM guest, I can logon to that, and install the VM Manager.
    Cheers
    paul

    Any idea ???

About the load it is just an observation
Other observation the virtual machine that reboots have is ram full.
It did not work before, it is like this since we installed the virtual machine
We did not change any hardware
    The history of the problem:
    1st day
We have oracle virtual server 2.2.1 running on a HP Proliant DL 380 G7
We have a (virtual machine) server under windows 2008 R2 (A17). We installed this machine in the last position
    2nd day
We noticed we were not able to contact the different machine via the network
We checked the log and noticed an error NETDEV WATCHDOG: eth0: transmit timed and something else related to bnx2 driver
after some research under support of oracle we found something like this [ID 1312709.1] where the problem were supposed to be solved in oracle virtual server 2.2.2 or using an another kernel and when disabling option C-STATE in the BIOS C6 and C3.
were drivers related to NIC were updated. We installed this new kernel but the problem were now related to the windows server 2008 R2 machine.
Actually this machine reboot and the nic where the machine is cannot be contacted after the machine reboot
i mean if A17 on xenbr1(eth1) reboots ping on eth1 does not respond but still able to ping A15 and A16 on xenbr0(eth0)
    and the nic is:
    Lspci grep ethernet
Ethernet controller: Broadcom Corporation NetXtreme II BCM5709 Gigabit Ethernet
    ethtool -i eth1
    driver: bnx2
    version: 2.0.8-rh
    firmware-version: bc 5.2.3 NCSI 2.0.6
    bus-info: 0000:33:00.1
    end of the story
the problem sems to happen when users launch batch application which execute batch sql statement (midday or 5 pm). twice or once a day.
    Any idea ?!!
    thanks

  • Oracle VM Manager 3.1.1: Killing a Virtual Machine

The iSCSI volume that was acting as the "physical" disk for the virtual machine "SLES-11-SP2" unexpectedly crashed and the virtual machine is stuck "in limbo".
I've tried stopping, restarting, and even killing the VM but Oracle Virtual Machine Manager 3.1.1 refuses:
    SLES-11-SP2 is locked

  • VM Manager doesn't recognize virtual machine

    Hi there.
I've created 2 virtual machines (Red Hat with EBS-12i), a vision and a fresh install and I have the VM manager installed in another machine. It all worked fine untill the day that I had to move the machines to another place and I was forced to change the IP of the machines.
After I made the IP changes I lost the access to the vision virtual machine, the VM manager sees the fresh VM but doesn't sees the vision.
Do you know if there is a tool that can probe the VM server to search for the virtual machines or the configuration file where there is the location of the VM?
    Thanks and regards,
    Ricardo Vilhena

On the Resources tab of VM Manager, select "Virtual Machine Image" and then import --> From Server Pool. It will find all the running VMs that exist in /OVS/running_pool/ that are not already being managed by VM Manager.

FYI.  I've had the same issue after I installed Update Rollup 3 (KB2965413), seeing the exact same error on event log.  Tried to start the service manually, getting service unable to start error.  This is a machine running
with Windows Server 2012 Standard.  Solution for me is simple. I just install
KB2965414 (Update Rollup 3 for SCVMM 2012 R2), reboot the server, and the SCVMM service auto start up by itself.

  • Need to access the Power shell within Virtual Machine Manager.

Hi all, I have a VM that shuts down everyday between 9-10PM.  I would like to get a script to start it up at 11PM.  However, the issue I have that if i run the powershell command "start-vm -servername" from the Powershell within the Virtual
machine manager it works without an issue.  However I can not get my script to use that powershell.  If I use the normal powershell, that command does not work.  Hopefully that makes sense.
    I'm running Windows server 2008 R2 standard with VMM 2008 R2.
The VM is being decommissioned in Q1 2015, so this would be the most cost effective way to restore functionality.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • System Center Virtual Machine Manager SC VMM 2012 SP1 Installation fails: Unable to assign the name NO_PARAM to this host because this name is already in use.

I'm trying to install VMM 2012 SP1 on a Windows Server 2012 machine and it fails with this error,
    the scenario is as follows,
Old database (from 2012 RTM) exists on remote SQL 2012 SP1 server
Server was 2008 R2 SP1 so I decided to make a fresh installation of 2012 with the same name
    installed ADK

    use.
    please help

I had a similar problem today when upgrading from SCVMM 2012 RTM to SCVMM 2012 SP1 RTM. To re-create the issue you describe originally you can actually just uninstall SCVMM 2012 SP1 RTM with "retain data" option and re-install the software on the same
computer (with the same name of course), attaching it to the retained DB. If you change the SCVMM server name I believe it will make some things go wrong after your install, like missing VM template passwords for example as the data gets encrypted in
the DB. Maybe it didn't but I didn't risk it. I definitely know if you change service accounts on a scenario like this you will be without the encrypted DB data which isn't much fun. To avoid changing the computer name, if you look in the setup log
files in %systemdrive%\ProgramData\VMMLogs\, specifically the SetupWizard.log file. You will see details on it failing because the same computer name is in the DB table "dbo.tbl_ADHC_AgentServer" and until it is removed from that table I wasn't able to get
the install to complete at all. The error in my logs looked something like this "InnerException.Type: System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException, InnerException.Message: Violation of UNIQUE KEY constraint 'unique_ADHC_AgentServer_ComputerName'. Cannot insert duplicate
key in object 'dbo.tbl_ADHC_AgentServer'. The duplicate key value is (computername.is.writtenhere). The statement has been terminated." In the row data in the DB it also seems to suggest that the computer name had "Virtual Machine Manager Library Files" on
it which is strange since I always remove the local SCVMM server as a library server after I install it and use an off box library server.

Note I have tried multiple scenarios, including upgrade hosts from 2012 R2, install fresh as server Core, install fresh full-GUI hosts, enable Hyper-V before adding to VMM, allow VMM to enable Hyper-V...
also RunAs user is administrator of hosts and VMM, computer accounts have been added to all administrator groups, WinRM quickconfig has been run, firewall is off..
..however VMM vNext refuses to add Server vNext hosts. (however - I can add Server 2012 R2 hosts to VMM vNext with no problem)
NOTE - also, when Server Manager starts, I get "Error occurred while loading the plug-in for 481. Exception has been thrown by the target of an invocation". After this the File and Storage Services node in Server Manager is missing. Not sure if
this is related to the error below; but I get this issue in all servers built with latest .9888 build.
Error from VMM server when trying to add Tech Preview host is as follows -
VMM encountered a critical exception and created an exception report at c:\programdata\VMMLogs\abcdefg...etc.

I did not accuse you of anything. The build in question has been pirated
and is floating around the Internet and Microsoft has not, in fact released
the build to the general pubic. Those are facts. I have also been involved
in various TAP programs over the years and I know that there are dedicated
support channels for those programs and that you are to use those dedicated
support channels, not the support channels made available to the public
    releases. Also a fact.
If you want support for your issues, the only way you're going to get
that support is what I told you. Whether you choose to avail yourself of
that support is up to you.

  • No longer able to view virtual machine from Hyper-V Manager

From the Windows 2008 R2 host machine, I can run the Hyper-V Manager and 'connect' to the Virtual Machine.  The window pops up with nothing but a gray background (clearly the same gray background of the log in screen), but no 'ctrl-alt-delete' prompt
and no ability to log in.  This was previously working fine.
Note that I can still make a Remote Desktop connection to the Virtual Machine and it works fine.
    Thanks.

    Hi,
I never seen this issue before, base on my experience, it may cause by your AV soft block some critical components of Hyper-V host, please try the following exclude specific
directories or process with your AV soft.
•Default virtual machine configuration directory (C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Hyper-V)
    •Custom virtual machine configuration directories
•Default virtual hard disk drive directory (C:\Users\Public\Documents\Hyper-V\Virtual Hard Disks)
•Custom virtual hard disk drive directories
•Custom replication data directories, if you are using Hyper-V Replica
    •Snapshot directories
•Vmms.exe (Note: This file may have to be configured as a process exclusion within the antivirus software.)
•Vmwp.exe (Note: This file may have to be configured as a process exclusion within the antivirus software.)
    The related KB:

  • Can not connect to a cluster and hyper-v manager(to one of my hosts) but virtual machines are running (hyperv2012r2)

    Hello guys
I'm using a cluster hyper-v 2012 r2 with 9 hosts and after 12 hours without energy, it back again. my problem is:
    my cluster do not back
all hyper-v hosts are and running hypervisor... all vms running... my problem is the cluster.... quorum do not back online...
i found the problem... the wmi is not working in one of my hosts and in that, i cant connect to this hyperv manager... from anywhere.... the virtual machines are running on this host... but i cant manage them...
i found an article talking about this and now, im running this script.... but nothing hapen
    "C:\windows\system32\wbem> mofcomp.exe cluswmi.mof
Microsoft (R) MOF Compiler Version 6.3.9600.16384

    Parsing MOF file: cluswmi.mof
MOF file has been successfully parsed
    Storing data in the repository..."
    someone can help me?
    tnx!

    Tnx for the ansywer..
    "When you say "my
cluster do not back" do you mean that the cluster is not running?"
yes... i cant connect to the cluster
    Is "quorum
do not back online" another way you are saying the cluster is not running?
    yes
Are you using disk witness or file share witness? Recommend
to use disk witness as it provides a more robust level of operation.
    witness
Did you run the cluster validation wizard?  Turn off the disk tests to prevent VMs from
failing over, but run all other tests.  What errors/warnings do you get?
When i try to run validation tests, one of my hosts (same  that i cant manage vitual machines), fail to join in tests but all others are tested
