P45 Platinum Chipset & VREG Waterblocks - any ideas?

Hi folks,
... i have desperately searched the web for this until I got (literally) blue in the face .... to no avail.    Any ideas anyone? 
Has anyone ever tried to make this conversion to mainbaord watercooling w/ 'universal' waterblocks or ones that can be modified to fit?
Particularly the VREG/MOSFET blocks seem to represent a real challenge, NB/SB most likely don't...
Appreciate your helpful info but I don't expect any miracles, though ...

.. thanks for your hints. When I installed this board the first time, I removed the "circu-pipe" mainboard cooler (which is a one-piece job interconnecting NB,SB & 2 VRMs) in order to replace the thermal pads with good thermal grease and the push-pins with nuts and bolts. A look at the VRM/MOSFET surfaces then showed no difference compared to those of other mobos. And yes, under OC loads they do get hot ... 
In due course I don't think the surfaces represent any problem, but their shapes/sizes and mounting holes (those of the big (rear) heat sink ("DrMOS" labeled) and the very small one on top above the CPU do. Sure I could use NB/SB waterblocks only and saw off the heat pipes right at the lower end of the rear heatsink, but I simply don't want to destroy that neat "circu-pipe" construction....       
After all, I think I might leave the whole thing as it is and switch to an X58/Sandy Bridge platform supported by mainstream waterblock makers earlier than planned ... sometime next year...

  • P45 Platinum chipset temp

     I see people referring to chipset temp on this MB but curious about that as I don't see it shown as such with anything I use. Is it by any chance the mainboard or system (depending on which program used) temp that shows as 34oC on mine?

  • P45 Platinum - NB Drive Configure

    In the BIOS Cell Menu is one item that does not appear in the User Manual:
    NB Drive Configuration  {May help memory strength when OC}
    It is set to AUTO but has options for Drive Settings 1 throught to 4.
    The explanation is not really clear as to what it is supposed to accomplish or what it is doing.
    JacktN, I have to rely on your experience and hope that you have a better explanation than the BIOS description.

    I am not very experienced with the practical effects of that option on the P45 Platinum (I never ran any systematic tests). 
    However, as far as I understand it, those settings affect the "strength" at which the mainboard "drives" the memory data bus signals.  In theory, a higher drive strength means a "stronger" signal in effect, which can (theoretically) improve the system stability when there is a lot of memory load and/or the memory & memory controller is overclocked. [On the flip side, higher drive strength may increase electromagnetic interference, which may have negative effects on other parts of the system.]
    Unfortunately, the fact the BIOS just allows us to choose between pre-configured Profiles, we do not really know what is actually set when we select any one of them. 
    So the best thing would probably be to simply play around with those profiles to find out the actual effects @higher memory clock speeds (or with all four memory slots populated).

  • Z97 Gaming 3 chipset driver issue. Any ideas?

    I got the Z97 Gaming 3 mobo. Installed every driver from MSI's website.
    But when I look up at the device manager the system devices... the:
    -Intel(R) Z97 Chipset LPC Controller - 8CC4
    - Intel(R) 9 Series Chipset Family PCI Express Root Port 1 - 8C90
    - Intel(R) 9 Series Chipset Family PCI Express Root Port 3 - 8C94
    - Intel(R) 9 Series Chipset Family SMBus Host Controller - 8CA2
    - Intel(R) 4th Gen Core processor DRAM Controller - 0C00
    Are still uses the Microsoft version driver from the date 2006.06.21, driver verion : 6.3.9600.17031
    I installed the chipset several times, restarted the PC. No help at all. Tried to manually install the
    driver, and browse the driver from hard drive. When it finishes, its says:
     "The best driver for your device is already installed"
    Anyone with the same problem? Any ideas guys?:S

    its happen to everyone who own z97 or any 9 series chipset. after installing "latest chipset driver" either downloaded from msi or from intel website, device manager still shows that drivers is taken from microsoft and dated 2006.
    until intel fixed their crap drivers, nothing that we can do.

  • Problem with P45 Platinum during POST

    Good day! 
    I have MSI P45 Platinum mainboard and from to time to time it freezes during POST with AMI bios POST code - 423C. This happens right after the message that "4096MB OK" and before the detection of SATA/IDE drives.  When this happens, the only way to make the system run is to turn off the power (pressing Ctrl-Alt-Del of Reset would result in the same error)  - after that the POST procedure finishes correctly and I don't experience any problems afterwards (system is rock-solid after POST completion).
    So my question is - can anyone explain me what does this post code mean (D-Leds are not much of a help)? Is this a mobo problem or may be there is some kind of incompatibility with my hardware. I should mention also that I've tried all versions of Bios both official and beta without any success.
    This problem does not trouble me that much (doesn't happen often), but still I would like to understand what may cause it.
    P.S. My system config - iC2D E8300/MSI P45 Platinum/4x1Gb DDR2-800 Geil Black Dragon (5-5-5-15)/MSI Radeon 4870 1Gb OC edition/HDD 250 Gb WD + 120Gb Seagate/SB Audigy 4/DVD-RW Asus 1814/PSU TT Toughpower 700w (w0105)

I've tested the modules with the memtest86+ software (the latest version, which supports P45 chipset) several times and it showed no errors.     In mobo's manual this diagnostic LEDs are grouped in 4 groups and the description of the group that most closely resembles my case is - "Testing base and Extended memory etc." But I'm not sure that I'm identifying the problem correctly, because of the LEDs that are OFF.

    No, as I said in my initial post, once it get past this stage everything is running smoothly - OS boots and all software, including the most demanding games or tests, are running OK.

  • E8400 on an MSI P45 Platinum

    I just got done reading the guide on tweaking VTT/GTL which helped me get a better grasp about the awesome settings the P45 have.
    Anyway I have a bit of a dillema, I can't seem to get 4.0Ghz without cranking my settings up to this:
    Vcore = 1.525v (This will fry it eventually)
    CPU GTL REF0 = AUTO (For now)
    CPU GTL REF1 = AUTO (For now)
    DRAM Voltage = 2.100v (Manu specs)
    DDR_VREF_A = AUTO (For now)
    DDR_VREF_B = AUTO (For now)
    MCH Voltage (Is this the Southbridge?) = 1.556v (I have no idea what to set this to, I just cranked it up as high as it would go)
    MCH GTL REF = AUTO
    VTT FSB Voltage = 1.60v (What the hell is VTT?)
    ICH Voltage (Is this the Northbridge??) = 2.12v
    The problem with this is I'm going to cook my system...the funny thing is I can remove the jumpers and run my CPU at 3.6Ghz and all stock voltages without a single problem - however going even 1Mhz above this requires me to crank the hell out of this system.
    Anyone here have any settings they use for this board w/ an E8400? I'm kind of out of ideas at this point.
    Specs:
    MSI P45 Platinum
    Intel E8400 Core2Duo @ 3.0Ghz
    OCZ OC RAM DDR2-1066 @ 5-5-5-15-2T and 2.1v
    Antec TruePower 750w w/ (4) Independent 12v rails

    Thats a good starting point. Set BIOS to default and then ensure your memory is at DDR2-800 at ~1,9V.
    From there start increasing your FSB. I think you will have a better chance at what you are trying to achieve with a lower memory frequency. See how far you can go that way without changing any other voltages, but always check your V Core under load as you increase the frequency.
    I have had my proc at up to 3,7GHZ (board jumpers removed) all other BIOS settings being stock/auto, but I manually kept my DDR at 800.
    My  core Voltage will rise to 1,296 under full load at that freq, which is still below the Intel spec max of 1,3625 "Table 2-3. Voltage and Current Specifications in the Intel spec sheet". So I know there is room for more. My CPU core temps will be between 55 and 60C depending on the auto speed-up of the cooler, which I must say is very effective.
    Running some real world tests though, i.e. 3D gaming, I found that the increase above the 3,4GHz I am running now, is hardly worth the additional heat and obvious associated higher voltages.  My chipset especially heats up to about 55C and I need to take the passive cooling off at some stage to check the MSI factory paste.

  • P45 Platinum Posting Issue

    I have a P45 Platinum Motherboard that I purchased from Newegg on the 14th. I recieved it on the 17th and built a brand new system with it from scratch. I'm using an intel E8400 Wolfdale CPU along with  4 sticks of 2GB G-SKILL DDR2 RAM (PC-8500) @ 1066. I'm currently using a BFG 8600 GT graphics card (soon to be a Sapphire 3870x2) and its all being powered up by a Rosewill PSU with 850 watts of power. All items purchased from Newegg (aside from the 8600gt, thats an old card).
    Here is whats frustrating me, and as you can see from the topic's title... my system doesnt post... sort of.
    Technically it does POST however it will only POST if i hit the "Clear CMOS" button located on the back of the system. Upon doing so, the system will act as though its booting up for the very first time. It will ask you to set up your CMOS configurations and once that is complete it will load up Vista right off my Harddrive with no problems.
    However..
    Once the system is shutdown or restarted, the system WILL NOT POST and I am forced to clear the CMOS again!
    Now... I have troubleshooted ALOT with this board... and I'm left with only two conclusions... either this board is defective (highly likely) or it just needs its BIOS updated.
    Ram sticks, video card, HDD, DVD drives... all have nothing to do with it! I can remove all devices and turn the system on with no memory sticks, and I will be left with 4 solid red lights (the ones that turn green after posting) and there will be no beeps of any kind to indicate I dont have memory installed. However... once i hit the clear cmos button then it will post and it will correctly see that there is no memory sticks... it will beep.. I will shut down... I will install devices... turn it on and it will POST.
    It appears it can complete the initial POST without issue, its POSTING for a second or a third time thereafter that becomes the issue...
    I need help with this in a desperate way...

    Let me try to explain a little more detailed:
    A given board/BIOS is not able to read the sticker that is glued to your modules but only the SPD Profiles that are pre-programmed into the SPD Chips of your sticks.  If you check those SPD-Tables with Everest, Memset 3.5 or Memory-Z (in BIOS) you can see for yourself that the "fastest" Profile is a JEDEC-Standard DDR2-800-Profile [CL5 @1.8V].  There is no profile for DDR2-1066 clock speed.  That is why whatever Board or BIOS you try, your modules will be detected and handled as DDR2-800 (PC2-6400) modules.  It is evident, that there is no issue here and there is no point in discussing this any further.
    So, what does the PC2-8500 rating mean?  It means, that G.Skill has tested these modules, which are essentially DDR2-800 sticks, up to DDR2-1066 clock speed with increased voltage.  Basically, G.Skill is giving you a permission to overclock these memory sticks by increasing the voltage above the 1.8V +/- 0.1V JEDEC-DDR2-standard without voiding your warranty.  Therefore they sell these modules as DDR2-1066 RAM.
    If your RAM was "real" DDR2-1066 memory, it would have to be able to operate @1.8V (DDR2 standard voltage) above 1000 MHz.  But in order to be to that the timings your timings would have to be relaxed to CL6 or CL7 depending on the chips used by the manufacturer.  In addition to that, there needs to be an SPD-Profile that tells the BIOS that these modules are DDR2-1066 and that it should set frequency, timings and voltage accordingly. 
    Furthermore, the P45 Memory Controller does not natively support DDR2-1066 modules.  That is why that rating is tagged with an "OC"-mark on the product page of the P45 Platinum. 
    This said, your only option to get these modules to DDR2-1066 speed is to manually set the clock speed and increase DRAM voltage in BIOS.  There is no other way to get there and it is also perfectly normal to do that. 
    Now, let's look at your actual problem:  The system is unstable as soon as you want to overclock your RAM to the DDR2-1066 rating, that G.Skill has promised you.
    There are a couple of reasons that can cause such an instability:
    1. Your memory modules are not up to the task of running at that speed.
    2. Your memory related BIOS settings (especially timing & voltage) are not properly set.
    3. The board is incapable of supporting such clock speeds above chipset specifications (remember: DDR2-800 max. according to Intel).
    4. The board's current BIOS is not optimized in such a way, that it can properly handle DDR2-1066 clock speed.
    I can assure you, that the board has no problems with DDR2-1066 in generell and I suspect that this is simply a BIOS related problem.  I have no issues getting my Kingston HyperX RAM to DDR2-1066 speed with BIOS v1.1b5.

    Of course, I can understand that and it is generally not a bad idea to be careful with BETA releases.  However, in your case I believe the problem is rather BIOS related.  I had stability problems with DDR2-1066 clock speed with different earlier BIOS Versions as well (including v1.0) and I have tested more than 10 BETA- and Performance releaes so far.  BIOS v1.1b5 however allows stable operation @DDR2-1066 MHz.
    If you do not want to use flash this BETA, you will have to wait for an official release which can be expected soon.  This official release will be based on v1.1b5 and it could very well be the case, that v1.1b5 will simply be renamed to v1.10 and offered for download on the product page.

    You can contact MSI Technical Support and describe your problem there as well.  I am almost sure that they will provide you with a more recent BETA BIOS in return (v1.1b5 or later).  If you want to be reassured by an official feedback from MSI Support, I suggest you contact them and see what they have to say.

    Hi, I have encountered with a problem.
    First I had
    MSI p45 platinum ddr2 bios ver. 1,4
    Intel E8400
    Corsair Dominator PC8500C5D 2x1Gb
    2 Asus ATI EAH 3870 Crossfire
    and it was running with windows XP without any problems.
    Problems began when I decided to upgrade to 6Gb of ram and to install Vista 64. Ram modules witch I bought are the same Corsair Dominator PC8500C5D, but 2x2GB.
    When i put them together adjust voltage 2.1v and timing 5-5-5-15 they fail mem test with huge amount of errors.
    when I test only 2x2gb modules memtest sometimes doesn't open at all, sometimes just stops working on 8 minutes of test. couple of times they completed memtest without any errors.
    Can someone advice what should I do and what could the problem?

  • P45 Platinum wont start up

    Hi
    i have a p45 platinum motherboard. For some reason the board just wont start up anymore, it was working fine.
    when i plug it in, the power led glows, but when i hit the power button (on the board) some if not all of the leds, glow for like one second and then, nothing.
    Any idea what could be the issue ? is it fixable ?

    Overclocking means accelerated death, but that 10% level is not quite a dangerous one.
    Did you overclock them more than 10% in the past?
    And if yes, how much and for how long?
    Try to borrow another processor and another DDR2 module and see how it goes.

  • MSI P45 Platinum and RAID 0!

    System specs below! First of all this system is basically a gaming rig. I am running Vista 64 on one single Western digital hard drive, and using an identical drive for storage. I was thinking about setting up a RAID 0 array with these two drives. Can this be easily done with this mobo? I am just wondering if there are any quirks associated with the MSI P45 Platinum mobo that would make this a pain to set up. Anyone else running a RAID 0 with this mobo and having good results? Would it even be worth it?
    I was told my several different people in the gaming community, that RAID 0 really speeds up map loading, which would be great. I would be backing up the array to another internal drive using True Image.
    Any advice would be great!!

    Ok, well I won't have my new storage drive until Thursday. I will run HD tune on the drive connected to both different controllers and see what is the fastest.
    I know we talked about this just a little. Still wondering about the RAID drives, or any drives attached to the ICH10R's SATA connections when it is set to RAID in the bios. The drives, including my SATA CD/RW drive does not show under "Standard CMOS features". Just #7 and #8 of the JMicron's show since they are still set to IDE in the bios.

    Those locations are just where you set the RAID mode. There's no actual drives listed there. I do see a screen popup when booting my system with the two RAID drives saying "ok" and bootable. Plus I see them in the Matrix storage console. Is this normal then?  There really is no place when you search through the bios that you can see them listed??  I can hit the Ctrl and I keys and go into the actual RAID bios, but I don't see my RAID drives listed in the actual bios.
    Am I explaining this right??  Just wanting to make sure everything is working right.  It sure seems to work well with bench marks. Here's a shot of my array with HD tune.  I'm thinking that burst rate can't be right.

  • P45 Platinum NEED HELP FAST PLEASE!

    As you may have read previously, I was going to and I got a P45 Zilent board along with other parts. Now I have a few problems. Firstly here are the system specs:
    MSI P45 Platinum (Zilent) BIOS v1.0
    Intel Core 2 Duo E8300
    A-DATA Vitesta 1066+ 2x1GB
    MSI R4850
    1XWD RAPTOR 74GB
    1XWD CAVIAR 200GB
    1XWD CAVIAR 500GB
    1XSAMSUNG SATA DVDRW 22x
    PSU: Cooler Master Real Power M520
    HANNS-G HI221DP (22" Widescreen connected with DVI-D Single Link Cable)
    So, when I installed everything, and turned on the PC the DOS looking environment that shows up before the OS is loaded is filled with exclamation marks on the background, and in the BIOS has dots on the background. I thought at first OMG my VGA is faulty, but then in Windows it shows perfectly good image quality and no problems what so ever...
    Second problem: My PC won't reboot. When it goes to reboot, it goes through the shutdown sequence properly, but after that when it needs to restart it just hangs and the 4 indicator lights are all red. Now when it starts normally there is no hang, all the lights are green and system is working fine. But every time it restarts it hangs there and nothing happens... :S
    And third on CPU Z my the PC multiplier varies and also the bus speed is too low... here is a screenshot:
    Now, even though the multiplier changes when PC under load, and I read it is some kind of power saving option, the BUS remains that low :S
    Please help me fast, please.

    There is no real need to disable that function.  After all, it is a feature of your processor, you paid for it and the Multiplier should switch back to default as soon as you CPU gets something to do.  It will only drop to x6 when the system is IDLE to save power and keep the temperatures low.  There should not be any performance sacrifices. Keep in mind that the Core Voltage is reduced as well.  This is all intended to for the benefit of your Processor and therefore for you, after all.
    However, if you really think that you want to disable these functions, you may want a little info on what functions are actually involved:
    1) EIST = Enhanced Intel SpeedStep Technology -> The option is located in the Cell Menu.  You can actually disable EIST on the OS level (and keep in enabled in BIOS).  All you need to do is to turn off the Windows Power Saving Features and set everything to max. Performance.  This disables SpeedStep/EIST, even when the support is still enabled in BIOS. 
    2) C1E Support (C1E = Enhanced Halt State) -> This feature can only be disabled in BIOS.  Even if EIST is disabled (OS and/or BIOS), the C1E Feature will still be doing its job.  To disable it, look in the CPU Features Section of the BIOS.  You should find an option there.
    In any case, my suggestion would be to keep both functions enabled.  These features are actually rather good.

    The standard DDR2 supply voltage is 1.8V +/-0.1V.  The fact that your memory modules need to be overvolted to have a chance to run at DDR2-1066 MHz shows that they are not "real" DDR2-1066 memory modules but actually just DDR2-800 sticks with a manufacturer's permission to overclock them.  Also, keep in mind that the P45 Chipset does not natively support DDR2-1066 memory modules, but DDR2-667 & DDR2-800 only.
    This said, you actually need to overclock both the memory controller and the modules, which is not necessarely stable.
    To increase the memory voltage, you need to manually adjust the FSB/DRAM Ratio in BIOS to 1:1.6 and manually increase the DRAM Voltage using the +/- keys of your numpad.  Spread Spectrum should be disabled at all times.

    i have some problems with my MSI p45 Platinum. I have Random freeze when i configure 2 Raid on it.
    Here my configuration:
    MB: MSI p45 Platinum
    CPU: Intel core 2 duo 8400
    GPU: 8800 GTS 640mb
    RAM: 6 gb Ram (2*2+1*2)
    PSU: 850W Cooler Master
    SO: Windows 7 Ultimate RTM
    MAIN DISK: 3 * Hitachi Deskstar 250gb RAID-0
    With this all work well, and now the problem ...
    I added 3 * 500gb Hitachi Deskstar Disks
    If i make a 3*500gb RAID-0, i have random hard freeze before 30 min after i start up PC
    If i make a 3*500gb RAID-5, i have random hard freeze before 30 min after i start up PC
    If i leave 3*500gb No Raid, all work well ...
    I'm working on this problem from some months as you can see on my old topics... and finally i isolated the problem but, What is the problem?
    Any incompatibility with >1tb disks on Win 7?
    Motherboard problem with internal raid that not support more than 1 raid? ...

    Can any malfunctions on any HardDisks or Intel Matrix Storage make only the 2nd raid-mode not work? Is there any test i can do for discover it?

    I bought a P45 Platinum + Kingston HyperX KHX8500D2K2/2G Memory Kit + CPU Intel E8400 Duo Core. I can't get my system running at 1066Mhz. I upgraded bios to version 1.2 but it still doesn't work. I set many configs but windows xp does not boot or the machine keeps rebooting.

    I have the same set of memory modules.  The proper settings for DDR2-1066 clock speed vary between BIOS Version [after all DDR2-1066 for these modules is a double overclock: memory controller beyond specs and memory chips beyond specs]. I never had problems to get both of these sticks  to POST in Dual Channel mode on this board.  DDR2-1066 can be tricky with some BIOS Versions but DDR2-800 has to be possible at all times with all Versions (at least, that never was a problem in my case).
    The Bottom line is:  If you can't get your system to get through POST @DDR2-800 MHz with both modules in dual channel configuration, one of the follwing explanation to come to mind:
    - short circuit within the case affecting one of the memory slots [test the board outside the case on a non-conducting surface]
    - defective memory slot [if you have tested in Slot 1 & 3, try Slot 2 & 4 and see if anything changes]
    - faulty modules [maybe one of them [did all 10 memtest tests pass on each module without errors?]
    - faulty mainboard
