[P965 NEO] Why max memory 8gb but don't support 2gb module?

Why max memory supported is  8gb and has 4 slots,  but don't support 2gb DDR2 800mhz module?
The memory is CORSAIR PC2-6400 XMS2 DHX DUAL CHANNEL 2GB.
Sorry with my English.

This is an (Intel!) chipset (memory controller) limitation rather than a board or BIOS problem.  Intel states it somewhat differently:
http://www.intel.com/Assets/PDF/datasheet/313053.pdf
Quote
Supports 256-Mb, 512-Mb, and 1-Gb technologies for x8 and x16 devices (DDR2
800MHz 1Gb technology not supported)
Intel refers to the density rather than the memory capacity/size.  Look at this Kingston module model for example:
http://www.valueram.com/datasheets/KVR800D2N5_2G.pdf
Quote
The components on this module include
sixteen 128M x 8-bit DDR2-800 SDRAM in FBGA packages
"128M x 8-bit" refers to the density of the memory chips used on those modules (=1024 Mbit or 1Gbit (1Gb)).  There are sixteen of those 128M x 8-bit chips on the module which gives you a capacity of precisely 1024Mbit x 16 = 16384 Mbit (2024 MByte).
A 2GB DDR2-800 module that meets the Intel specifications for the P965 memory controller (512Mbit maximum density for DDR2 800) would need to have 64M x 8-bit components but would need precisely 32 of those chips to reach a capacity of 2GByte.  Try to find a DDR2-800 module that can hold 32 memory chips and you will be able to run them @DDR2-800.  To my knowledge such modules do not exits (the module I used as an example has 8 chips on each side).
That is where the limitation comes from (it is not an MSI thing).

  • MAX memory 8GB

Hi i have one problem i canot understand why compay HP block support max memory for notebook. Configuration write max 8GB but hardware support 16GB. Chipset support 16GB processors support 16GB and mother board support 16GB. But BIOS BLOCK max memory only 8GB. I test i put 1 DDR3 8GB windows working and can looking if i put 1 8GB and 4GB total 12Gb only worki 8GB. I start find and study this problem to much view forum and understand this lock in BIOS support max memory. After i write insyde and get answer " Insyde Software sells BIOS source code to PC manufacturers who modify the source code to meet their specific BIOS needs. Thus, each PC manufacturer has a unique BIOS. Insyde does not track the changes made to the BIOS by the PC manufacturer because the PC manufacturer has full control over the BIOS features. Your laptop is limited to 8GB because either: 1) HP configured it that way and will not allow additional memory or 2) the processor is limited to work with 8GB. Insyde has no control over the amount of memory allocated."  I ask and want HP help me. I want use my notebook 100% and not have limit use my notebook. I think this do this bad For the buyer. Thanks i think you help.

That is the theoretical configuration of the chipsets. I think you already know that HP has designed the unit (a g6-2003sr) to take no more than an i5-2450M processor and no more than 8 gigs of DDR3-1600. Sometimes the specs on these are conservative and it will in fact take more memory, but that would be an expensive experiment. There is no way it is going to take a 3rd gen i7 Quad Core, though. What is it exactly you want done here? You think that if HP would just write new BIOS you could install these parts you want to install? I don't think it is not that simple although even a new BIOS is not going to happen. I did go back and search the internet and there are posts on the Dell and Asus forums with exactly the same complaints....HM76 chipset 2d gen Intel Core laptops maxxing at 8 gigs when it "could be" 16 gigs. So in the industry this was a common design in 2012.

  • MSI P965 Neo-F & JEDEC Memory

    Hellow,
Remeber me? I bought a system with a MSI motherboard a while ago.
I have a question for my little bro's Christmas Build.
i was wandering if JEDEC Memory works on the P965 Neo-F
On the site i am buying from, it said "may or may not work with JEDEC specifications".
    Here is the memory:
    Mushkin EM2-5300 Enhanced DDR2 SDRAM, 2GB Dual Pack (2x1GB)
    Thanks

my question is does MSI P965 Neo-F support JEDEC memory.
The question is not whether the board supports JEDEC memory, but whether the memory in question complies with JEDEC standards.
MSI's statement refers to the fact that many modules on the market require out-of-spec voltage and timings to run, often in spite of their own labeling.  e.g. if your DDR-II memory module requires 2.0v, this exceeds JEDEC's 1.8v +/- 0.1V spec for DDR-II.  Or, if your DDR-II memory module is labeled as a 1.8v part, it may actually require 1.9v to run.  JEDEC also specifies timings at each speed grade, which not all modules conform with;  PC2-4300 (DDR2 533) should have 4-4-4 timings, while PC2-5300 (DDR2 667) should use 5-5-5 timings.
Most of the 1st Tier DRAM manufacturers sell their own modules that comply stringently with JEDEC voltage and timings (Samsung, Infineon/Qimonda, Hynix, Micron).  These modules are more expensive than those from 3rd Tier module assemblers or marketers such as OCZ and Corsair, whose modules often need excessive voltage just to reach their rated speed (because the chips are inferior grade).
This is why the memory validation lists of mainboard and chipset manufacturers typically are over-represented by genuine modules from the 1st Tier DRAM manufacturers like Samsung or Infineon, rather than the 3rd Tier module assemblers or rebranders.

  • P965 NEO-F Conroe memory?

Hi guys. I'm about 2 build a computer and was wondering with the P965 NEO-F Conroe board can i for now just put 1gig stick of memory in till i get duel memory down the road? and i am looking at this CPU INTEL Core Duo 2 "Conroe" E6600.  the CPU and MB are compatible right?..hehe thanks in advance.

I posted this earlier in the wrong thread by accident.
Hey, I could use some help.
    Here's what I got:
    E6400 Allendale (333MHz FSB x 8 = 2.664GHz this was with the 256MB Corsair stick)
    MSI P965 Neo F
    X1800XT
    Seasonic S12 600 watt PSU
I can't get any RAM to work with this thing.  Here is what I've tried:
    2GB (2 x 1GB) OCZ DDR2 PC2-5400 (667MHz) Gold GX XTC RAM
        - No post.  Fans on, but nothing else.  Used a spare 256MB DDR2 533MHz Corsair stick of memory and everything worked.
        - Tried increasing vdimm up to 2.2V still wouldn't work
        - Tried using only one stick, and tried using different slots.
        - RMA'd back to OCZ (per their request)
    Next I tried:
    2GB (2 x 1GB) Team Xtreem DDR2 PC2-6400 (800MHz uses D9 Micron chips)
        - No post.  Fans turn on, but I get nothing else.
Both sets of RAM have been tested on an Intel P4 540 system and work fine.
Any help would be very much appreciated.

  • E1-510-2602 laptop with max memory 8GB Can I replace 4gb in slot with 8 gb

I want to increase my 4 gb to 8 gb and bought 4gb memory but when I opened the back there is only one slot with 4gb. Can I replace that with 8gb of memory

Would probably start by checking out the RAM, most likely it's RAM that could be imcompatible (DDR3 vs DDR3L or different voltage, etc...) or possibly just a bad stick of RAM.

  • P965 neo-f (7235) memory (4gb) incorrectly detected in bios (solved)

    hello
    My bios is 1.4.
    I have kingmax ddr2 mars 667mhz memory.
    4 memory modules of 1gb = 4gb.
My bios detected only 3 406 784 kb but the total memory should be 4 194 304 kb.
    Anyone got this problem ?
I hope the futur bios can resolve this problem.
    Thank...
    there's no problem with 2 * 1gb or 3 * 1gb

I remember that this is an calculation problem has many users with 4GB RAMs or more will encounter same issues, even on an Intel Original board.
    then i'm not alone

Dhal, this is the 32-bit limitation. What is your CPU? What's your OS? If you instaleld a 64-bit OS, you will gain back all 4GB. But for BIOS, WinXP 32-bit, you will only manage to utilize about 3.4GB. This is because some I/O devices are having the same memory address at the upper memory area, that's why the physical DIMM RAM you added in, those addresses cannot be utilized to avoid conflicts.
I have conroe E6600 cpu, with winxp 32 bits OS.
I understand now why (avoid i/o devices memory adress conflicts with ddr adress memory between 3 406 784 kb and 4 194 304 kb ).
So if my OS was winxp64 or in the futur, will be vista64 (same problem with vista 32bits i suppose).
The OS 64bit bypass the bios memory calculation and send me back my precious memory   :D
    thanks for your response

  • P965 Neo -F V1

    Hi Folks
i am sure somebody out there can help...so here goes.
    recently purhcased this board - P965 Neo V1 with a Dual core E5200 2.5Ghz and geil pc6400 2x1GB ram (ddr2 800) 2.0V, Geforce GS8400gs, 650W PSU
    all above is new
using old HDD and DVD etc
However, the system wont boot-no video output.
I have no speaker so can't hear BIOS beeps (if any) but fans and Geil ram lights up (ram is in 1&3 slots)
obviously guess work without speaker but as its Sunday and nowhere open am in a corner...
I think ram is to blame as Geil Black Dragon ram takes 2.0V NOT 1.8 as standard.
would the BIOS auto detect here or would i have to put in DDR 2 1.8V ram in order to boot to BIOS and then alter voltage.
I have tried taking batt out and removing CMOS jumper etc and also checked for shorting on system.
everything appears to work ok but no Video out.
    Many thanks

    Hello,
    the MSI P965 Neo(-F) [MS-7235 v1.x] does not support 45nm processors:
    http://global.msi.eu/index.php?func=prodcpu2&prod_no=265&maincat_no=1&orderby=cpu_name%20ASC#menu
Please test a supported CPU and see if there is any change in behaviour.  The E5200 will probably never be officially supported on this rather old mainboard.

  • P965 Neo-F memory problems - bad mobo or something I missed?

I bought a new system the other day, and chose the P965 Neo-F as my motherboard. However, it seems I either have a broken unit or missed something crucial.
The machine originally shipped with a G-Skill 800MHz 2 gig set of the NB series. I spent my first night trying to get Windows installed, only to have it crash repeatedly as it tried to copy kodak_dc.icm and various other files. Always the same ones. I thought my CD was bad, so I dug out a copy of Vista's Beta 2. It also failed on a generic "Failed to copy files" error. I then did what I probably should've done immediately and ran Memtest86+.
Within the first 5% I had about 200 errors, so I figured my RAM was bad. I experimented with various slot combinations, dual channel and otherwise. I discovered that the first stick in the first slot would run Memtest86+ until the cows came home with no problems, everything else caused a huge number of errors sooner or later. Interestingly the other stick on its own in slot one would cause massive amounts of errors within seconds. Sometimes these errors would occur within the first few percentages of the first pass, sometimes at the very end. I experimented by upping the voltage in increments from 1.80 to 2.00 and then lowering the RAM speed to 667MHz. No effect.
I exchanged the RAM at the store, but since they were out of G-Skill I got two sticks of generic TwinMOS 667MHz DDRII. The problems continued. One stick in slot 1 will run all day, Windows installs and runs fine. Any other combination causes huge amounts of errors (my record was 7200 errors at the 67% mark with sticks in slots 1 and 4) and data corruption in Windows.
I just rang up the guys at the store and we agreed that since the system is running fine on one stick, I'll try to debug this thing over the weekend. If I can't come up with anything I'll go and have the motherboard swapped on Monday. So, any ideas on things I could try?

I think at least using ddr2 800mhz had some restrictions on size or something.
Im my self running 2x1gb Kingston Valueram 667mhz no probs. So I would suggest mobo is bad, or you need to get newer bios. My original was 1.5, im using 1.6B9 because of my scsi problems. 1.5 was fine with my memory in dual channel mode.
But to the quality of mobo i think its not ready for shipment yet. I have 3 scsi controllers, where 2 raid controllers isnt working/booting propebly and have performance issues on this mobo, while they work ok with my old a64 system, or my yet older p3 system.

  • 4gb Memory in Windows XP 64 with p965 neo

    Hi,
    I have 4gb of ram installed 4x1gb DDR2 @ 667 mhz on a p965 neo (Bios flashed to 1.4)
The bios will only see 3.4gb of ram on POST and Windows XP 64 bit only sees 3.25
Reading another post, I was led to believe that Windows XP 64 would see all the ram regardless of the bios but this is definitely not the case.
On reading other forums, people have said with other motherboards you need to set a bios setting for Memory remapping, but I can't see this anywhere on the p965 neo - does it exist ?
How can I get this to work ? I understand the board takes up to 8gb ram, but the bios just won't see above 3.4
Have I wasted my time and money installing Windows XP 64 bit (and the incompatibility nightmares that go with it) on this motherboard ?
On another note, Linux will not install because of the JMicron controller - won't recognise the cd drive as ATAPI.

No I haven't formatted it, but don't really know how to either? I am a bit of a newbie at this and thought i just had to buy any memory stick and it would work. can you suggest how to format it for FAT32 ( I don't know what this is either ) as I will be using the memory stick for windows also at a later date.
    Thanks for your reply

I had a similar problem and after deleting endlessly...and weeks of frustration I (without even realizing what I was on to) deleted my text messages. I had been letting them add up since it seemed easier to text someone if it were readily available. Needless to say, I ended up with nearly double the space/memory available.

  • Memory not fully working on MSI P965 NEO

I've build a new computer and everything is working fine exept for the DDR2 memory.
    Specs
    - MSI P965 Neo, bios 7235ims v1.5
    - Memory, 2x 512 Mb PQI, Dual channel DDRII, 533
    - Intel core 2 duo, 6400
When starting it only reports 256Mb of RAM memory.
I've tried putting the memory in the different dimms and in all combinations. This makes no difference.
Any help to get the full 1Gb will be greatly appreciated.
    M

When I put in just 1 module, doesn't matter which one, and into which socket, the computer runs, but there's no screen. So it doesn't work with just one.
I upped the voltage to 2.0V and manually put in the timing. No difference at all.
Also I ran Memtest, and it displayed 255M of memory, and an error using test nr 4. When I did the specific memory tests on test 1 it said 255M, test 2 showed 621M and than freezed with lots of errors, and test 3 freezed immeadiatly.
So can I conclude the memory is broken or can Memtest not handle this memory.

  • P965 NEO-F Memory Problem

    Hi
    I have a P965 NEO-F Board with the 1.6f bios and a Pentium D 805.
The problem seems to be my memory (MDT 2x1024 DDR2 800mhz) running in slot 1+3.
I cant get the board to run it at 800mhz. it works without problems at 533mhz. but as soon as i change the bios to 667 or 800 it wont boot and after two restarts it changes back to 533.
I have no issues with stability or anything. both modules ran through memtest with 2+ hours and no problems.
Some images with Everest2007. maybe someone can spot a problem and help me:
and the memory benchmark which i think is way too bad.:
    thank you

As I can see everything is recognized correctly in Everest. Also,You have a decent latency, and I can say that because I was running Pentium D [email protected](FSB 800MHz) with this board and as I can remember the latency was around 110ns. I can only advise you to use the Auto adjusting option for the memory frequency and leave the memory timings by SPD.

  • P965 Neo memory problem

Below are my systems specs.  I've just built this machine and have 2GB total of OCX PC6400 Memory and can't get the computer to work with both of them in.  I am currently working fine with either of them in Slot 1 but when when do a 1/3 or 2/4 combination with both the computer freezes at the Press Delete for BIOS or Tab for POST screen.  Keyboard and all other functions are frozen at this point.  I even tried manually changing the DDR memory speed to 4,4,4,15 which is what it says it is but still same issue.  I can use either of them in slot 1 and the system is fine, but any combination and it freezes.  Any suggestions or help on how I can get this mobo to recognize both my 1Gb sticks of memory?

Actually I did state I am using XP (Pro in fact).
I am using a 450Watt Power supply (Thermaltake).
And with the problem I am having I do not think it would matter for you or anyone else here to know if I have 1gig of ram or 2 hence why I did not put up system specs. I feel the problem is Motherboard/ Card reader related so I posed all info that was required for this issue. I even posted the Bios version so  I think I have not posted to little info for the situation.
Also there is no need to be so rude!
I did not post my reply to you in such a too the point fashion but since that is how you like to communicate I responded this way in this post.
