P965 Platinum 2 optical drives leaves no room for ATA Harddrive??

Since there is only 1 IDE controller, I can't run 2 optical drives and have a IDE harddrive hooked up together?? I'm builing a system for a friend and along with 2 optical drives(DVD burner and CD ROM) he wants to use his current ATA Drive as storage. I am upgrading him to WD 250GB SATA drive. I just realized tho this board only has the one ATA connector and I can't hook all 3 devices to that controller. Do I have any options other than losing access to 1 optical drive?

You can put in an addtional PCI/PCIe-IDE Controller Card OR use a PATA->>SATA Converter.

  • P965 Platinum shutdown and driver problem.

    Hi all.
I purchased the P965 Platinum a few days ago, and I got two problems.
    1.
My computer will not turn off the power when shutting down. I got the message: "It's now safe to turn of the power"
    2.
In Device Manager i got a "!" in front of the "Intel(R) ICH8 Family PCI Express Root Port 1 - 283F.
I got the latest inf-files and latest BIOS.
    Anyone got a solution?
    Cheers...

Changing the HAL made my computer freeze and operate very unstable.
But I've reinstalled XP and NOW IT WORKS!!!! YEAH!!!
My computer is recognized as an ACPI Multiprocessor PC, and there are no errors in the system device section.
It must have been the flashing of the BIOS that did the trick.
Thanks for all your answers guys.
I'll go back to loving my new computer now..

  • After installing Mavericks, the optical drive doesn't work for movie DVDs, program install DVDs, or music CDs.

The disc loads but is immediately spit back out. I am fairly sure this is an OS X software issue, since blank CDs don't exhibit this behavior. As far as I know, the drive was working fine before installation of OS X 10.9 (actually the machine is at 10.9.1). The machine is a Mac Mini late 2009 with built-in optical drive. I have seen some other discussion of this or a similar issue in the Support Communities and the only suggested fix I have seen is to reset the SMC. I tried that, with no change in the behavior.
Also, the main OS X support page says that Mavericks includes 30 days of free support after install of the product, but when I try to follow any of the links on this page to find the "free" support, all I get are pages that require entering the serial number of the machine, which then tell me that the support for the machine has expired. Anybody know how to access the "free" support for Mavericks? It has definitely been less than 30 days since we installed it on this machine.

After browsing a lot of the "More Like This" links, it appears that a LOT of people are having this problem. It may be that a simple reset of the SMC fixes the issue on later (e.g., maybe >= 2010) Macs. Anybody been able to resolve this issue on a late 2009 Mac Mini?

  • MB's optical drive interrupts sleep mode for no apparent reason

Noticed this over the past few days: When I shut my MacBook's lid, the optical drive spins once or twice and even though the screen is dark, I don't think the MacBook is actually entering sleep mode-- instead, I have hit the "sleep" command from the Apple menu. Each time this happened, there's been no disc in the drive. It happened just now as well. So am I crazy, or is this unusual?
The MacBook in question is: 2.0ghz Core Duo 2 chip; 120 GB hard drive; 2 GB of RAM; Superdrive. It's a one-month-old black MacBook, if that makes any difference.
Two nights ago, it happened while the following programs were running [but hidden]: Firefox, Activity Monitor, iChat, iTunes, iCal, iJournal, Mail, LaunchBar, NewsFire, System Profiler, and Pages trial.
However, this also happened last night and only LaunchBar would have been running at the time. I actually had to turn the MacBook off last night, because I wanted to make absolutely sure the optical drive would stop spinning.
Right now, the only peripheral "hooked up" to my Mac is a bluetooth-enabled Logitech wireless mouse. Is it possible this is what's preventing the MacBook from staying asleep? I've fiddled with the Bluetooth pane's "allow Bluetooth devices to wake this computer" setting but that doesn't appear to affect when or how often my optical drive interrupts sleep mode. It's annoying when I'm trying to sleep and the optical drive spins up every 30 seconds or so until I have to shut the whole computer off. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Take it in for service since it's in warranty. There may be a serious hardware problem.

  • V240 - removed optical drive, now having constant HBA (ata controller)reset

    Hi there,
I have 2 Fire v240's - and only one working DVD optical drive which I move between them.. Running Solaris 05/09, whichever machine doesnt have the optical drive physically installed, goes through a continuous routine of resetting hba and trying to re-sync with it..

There is surely a way for me to disable the controller or advise Solaris to stop trying to talk to the missing hardware (DVD drive)?
    Many thanks!

Humm, can you see the DVD somehow in cfgadm -l or cfgadm -lv? If so you should be able to unconfigure or disconnect it from the OS :-)

  • Ical puts the date in and leaves no room for the event??

A couple of months ago ical suddenly started adding the date to my event entries and now in month view there is only room to see the date, not the event. How do I turn that off?
What it does is if I type in "7:30 p call john doe"  it puts it in the calendar as "call john doe" and then on the other side of the entry it says in light grey " May 18, 7:30pm to May 18, 8:30pm "  .
so because it says all that in light grey, there is no room for "call john doe"
    so my calendar says:  c May 18, 7:30pm to May 18, 8:30pm
in other words, the event is completely displaced by the date which I dont need to see because the event is already in the box for that day.
how can I turn this off and why did it start happening?
    thanks,
    Katarina

  • Ical leaves no room for events

I have a macbook air, iPhone and iPad and have them all synced on the cloud.
When I enter events, sometimes it will just format them normally.
If I enter 10am meeting with Jane it will show up on the calendar as: meeting with Jane  and there will be a small grey 10a off to the right.
But if the time I have to enter is not on the hour exactly, for instance, if it is 10;15am, what will happen is that it will say: Meeting with Jane  and in grey on the left it will say fri, june 8, 10;15am.  Which means that I will only see Meeting with…. because there is no room for Jane!
Help, why does it do that and how do I stop it? it didn't used to do that.
And sometimes it will say gmt, or pdt or pst  and sometimes it won't. I do not have the time zone support on, as I prefer to just adjust timing when I am traveling on my own. but there is no logic to why it will label it sometimes and why not.
Then a week ago it ate a section of my calendar. most of the events for a three week span just disappeared, but not all of them.
so is this a corrupted ical and do I need to somehow remove it and re install? or is this a common issue with ical that the dates are wonky and badly designed, and the events disappearing is a separate issue?
    Help!

  • K8n neo Platinum and Optical Drive problem?

I need some help figuring this out.  I've been searching for awhile but can't find any more information so I figured I'd ask here.
I have a Lite on LDW 411s dvd writer that is on the same ide channel as a lite on dvd player (labled as JLMS SJ-HD1665 in the device manager.
The problem is on the 411S where it will read the DVD/CD disk but when I try to use Cyberlink PowerDVD or Nero Recode to play or read the DVD it will just hang.  If I don't try to play these files and just open them in explorer then I can access them.
I'm trying to see if there are some conflict issues with the nforce drivers but am still looking.
    My setup is this.
    AMD 64 3000+
    K8n Neo Platinum nforce 3 250 Bios 1.4
    Western Digital 120 gb hd
    PQI 3200 1 gig memory
    PNY 6800 GT
    Audigy 2
    Antec Trupower 420
Any help would be great as I'm totally stuck.  Thanks.
Also to note I can play DVDs and use recode fine off the DVD rom drive but just not off the DVD writer (411s).

You might have better luck making the reader the slave on the channel your HD is on. I had both a burner/writer on the same channel and while it worked, the performance was very poor.
Man, I need to get around to posting my specs someday, but I have the same MB and BIOS as you. I'm also using the nForce unified drivers including IDE.

  • P965 Platinum SATA II drive stuck in UDMA-5

WD Caviar 2500 SATA II drive.
Tried 4 different SATA (Intel) ports.
The startup screen that shows IRQs, etc., shows that the drive has 32 access mode off, and in UDMA-5 mode.
Sandra and HD Tune and Device Mangler all agree that the drive is in UDMA-5 mode.
However, I get burst speeds in benchmarking over 150 MB/s.
Anyone know of any tricks to get this to display as UDMA-6?

    Thanks for responding.
I tried the JMicron SATA port last night, just to see what changes.
Burst speed in HD Tach was 210 MB/s, which is interesting.
It's overall read speed was about the same.
Sandra warned that the transfer mode was 0 instead of 16 or 32. I think that's where it can transfer several sectors at once. I don't see a way to set that either for the Intel or JMicron bios.
Using JMicron, HD Tune reported a lower minimum speed...it ranged from 16 megs to ~64, instead of the Intel port ranging from 28 megs to ~64. And the graph it makes showed some huge dips at different stages of the benchmark.
So, for now I'm back to Intel SATA and just be satisfied it's over the 150 MB/s burst, and that the average of 55 MB/s is reasonable.
It sounds like this drive is pretty commonly used, and so I'm hoping more people who are using it and the same mobo can chime in that they have the same problem, or theirs works fine.

  • Optical drive not recognized as an ATA device in Apple profiler

The dvd drive is not recognized any more in Apple Profiler (nothing under ATA) and the CD or DVD are not recognised neither. I can hear the drive is working but that's it. The problem happened just after I upgraded to 10.4.10. Any help would be welcome!

You will want to ensure your USB DVDRW drive is properly connected to the Windows 8 VM in question.
To check this you will want to use the Vmware vSphere client to connect to your Vmware ESX/ESXi host.
Next, you will want to edit the settings for your Windows 8 virtual machine and check that you have added a USB controller and then connected the USB device to the controller. This is a manual assignment. If your DVDRW drive you wish to connect is actually
connected via SATA on the motherboard of the host then you will want to go through the same process to ensure the CD/DVD drive of the host has 'connected' and 'connect at power on' selected under settings.

  • There is not enough disk space to download new messages. How can I backup my old emails onto my hard drive to create room for new message?

When trying to download new email messages I receive an error "There is not enough disk space to download new messages. Try deleting old mail, emptying the Trash folder, and compacting your mail folders, and then try again." I have emptied my trash, removed all the junk, deleted about 1gig worth of email and im still having problems.
I have a ton of folders that I store all of my emails in, so that I can easily find older emails. This email has been working fine for me for about the pass 5-6 years and now I have problems. I would like to be able to back up my emails onto my hard drive so that I have them on hand. What is the best way to go about this? Because of my file structure I am not able to see all of my messages on one screen. Is there a way to select emails from a certain year?
Thanks in advance for any help or suggestions.

''Try deleting old mail, emptying the Trash folder, and'' '''compacting your mail folders'''
If you did not compact the folders after marking the messages for deletion, you have not deleted anything.

  • No IDE device detected on p965 Platinum

Hi, I have a p965 platinum and I get the others parts for my new pc (cpu, ram and vga) first, I have to update o the last bios v1.6 to can work with the 1333 bus of the cpu (e675) I update and start ok, but now, I have to install a system, but no detect dvd or hard disk conected to IDE, I was try with a lot of combination of configuration on sata, raid, ide, enchande, disable, etc. but can't fix it. I was read a lot of people with problem like this, or umda on dvd and fix with a bios update. I been update to the last bios, but problem still no fix....any idea?...I'm looking to install windows via network, but one tiime I have windows, I need dvd anyway, so need to fix this problem

My suggestion is to start from scratch:
Unplug main A/C power connector from PSU, hit power-on button a few times to drain capacitors and Clear CMOS.  After restarting load Optimizes defaults in BIOS and make sure the JMicron controller is set to RAID:
Integrated Peripherals --> Onboard RAID Controller --> IDE
Make sure that the IDE devices connected to the JMicron controller are jumpered correctly as Master and Slave.
If that does not solve your problem, I suggest you use a SATA HDD and connect it to one of the Intel SATA Ports.  The JMicron controller is a tricky thing and seems to be picky with drives sometimes (especially if two drives (HDD+opt. drive) are hooked up to the IDE port.

  • Can I install a SSD on an optical drive in a HP Envy Phoenix

I just purchased a customized HP ENVY Phoenix Desktop - 810-350se CTO with a Raid 5 configuration (3 x 2 TB), but I noticed and researched that it seems that is better to have a SSD installed to have your computer access data faster, of course, I want to use it for the OS installed on it.  So I have two questions?
1.) Can I change the configuration so I can add an SSD on a optical drive? (This will be the 4th drive). Since I am already using 3 HDD on a Raid 5 configuration and there wouldn't be any more space left, I am assuming that I can only use an empty optical drive space and install an SSD?
2.) Is there a limitation of how many drives and capacity HDD can be installed on the motherboard?
My proposed solution is to keep the 3 HDD and install a  4th drive (SSD) on the optical drive and use it for the OS (Windows 8.1).
Any suggestions and/or recommendations is highly appreciated it.
    Thank you.

    Hi,
Your PC is already using a Windows 8 boot loader and if you load the SSD in UEFI mode then you will add another Windows 8 boot loader to the eligible boot device menu.  This will lead to confusion.  I would suggest that you avoid this situation by trying the following procedure:
Be sure to create the external HP recovery media
Install the SSD on port 1 or 2
Disable secure boot in the BIOS and switch to legacy mode
Boot into the Intel OPROM and rebuild the RAID 5 array
Boot back into the BIOS and enable UEFI mode
Boot the external HP recover media and load the SSD (SSD recommended size is 240 GB or larger)
Once you are up and running then go into Disk Management and format the RAID array as GPT
The above procedure may or may not work but it's what I would first try.

  • Replacement optical drive for late 2009 Mini

I recently purchased a used late 2009 Mac Mini that works great except the optical drive does not read any CD's/ DVD's I have fed into it. I hooked up an external USB drive which reads hem fine, but is not bootable, in case I ever need to reinstall my OS.
Can anyone provide a model # of a reasonability priced internal slot load CD/ DVD reader- writer that is also Mac bootable?

There should be a compatible replacement superdrive-like optical drive
among those listed for Apple Mac Mini from OWC macsales site online.
They also appear to have several other upgrade & replacement parts...
An instruction video (free) can be seen on the bottom of their pages
on how to install optical and hard drives. Or use online iFixit guides.
About USB flash or externalHDD, be sure the HDD or SSD is formatted
to use with GUID and HFS+ Journaled; there may be other details that
need to be readfor these to work. External USB optical drives can be
used with bootable system discs, be sure to check retail seller returns
policy when you get some brand such as LG or other, so you may return
the unit should it not work out for your purposes. Some won't boot OS X.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Installation of Master Collection CS3 (disc version for Windows)  on a laptop without optical drive

Installation of Master Collection CS3 (disc version for Windows) -  is there any possibility of installing my legitimately purchased MC-CS3 on a new laptop without optical drive? Perhaps through a download link or will tranfering all Adobe files from my old to my new computer do the trick as well? Or do I necessarily have to buy an external optical drive? Thank you for answering.

No need to buy an optical drive and don't try transferring, it rarely works.
Download the installer from Download CS3 products
Install then enter your serial number to license it.
