Package restore TFS 2013 where do I start?

There seems to be a lot of confusion about NuGet Package restore on TFS. I have found many many pages about making sure Package restore is False and .targets must be removed and others that state exactly the opposite.
I have found references to Bcl settings, build definition updates, post NuGet 2.7 changes. Statements such as "You must add an extra project that runs a checked in version of nuget.exe", "you need an empty "packages" folder to be
checked in".
If I turn on package restore then the build log lists "This project references NuGet package(s) that are missing on this computer. Enable NuGet Package Restore to download them....". If I try the opposite then all the references are not found.
I need to know where to start.
( I have read but perhaps do not understand the following).
https://docs.nuget.org/consume/package-restore/migrating-to-automatic-package-restore
http://blogs.msdn.com/b/dotnet/archive/2013/08/27/nuget-package-restore-with-team-foundation-build.aspx
http://docs.nuget.org/consume/package-restore/team-build
I have TFS 2013 and the developers are running VS2013 update 4 with nuget 2.8.
How can I find what version of nuget is running on the server?
What strategy should someone with this setup be following?
and why is there such a polar opposite in recommendations, I assume I am missing something fundamental.

Hi Rob,
Thanks for your reply.
Team Build will build solution/project on build agent machine by default, so we need ensure Team Build can find the required references/package on build agent machine.
Every project will created in/under a solution, and we need Enable NuGet Package Restore on solution. We suggest you build the solution in Team Build.
If issue happened on your Project based build, please share the detailed information here, I will follow your information and try to reproduce that issue on my TFS 2013 Update 4 Server environment.

  • TFS Online Builds Fail Sometimes on Package Restore

We are currently getting errors with package restore for TFS online build.
    C:\a\src\Web\Web\.nuget\NuGet.targets
(100): Unable to find version 'XXX' of package 'YYYY'.
It worked earlier for the same solution, but to another build definition/website.  And yes, it has worked many times for this build definition/website.  We periodically get these failures on a given day.  Maybe twice a month.
It always seems to be environment related as the errors just go away.  On occasion, the VSO support site has shown a problem status (not green).  But often the status is green.
Does anyone else have this problem occur this often?  We like using VSO and Azure for the most part.  But the builds are just killing us.  They are vey, very slow compared to what we can do locally and not very reliable.

The package restore workflow has been changed by NuGet team. For Team Foundation Build 2013 on-premises and Visual Studio Online  (formerly Team Foundation Service), the default Build Process  Templates already implement the NuGet Package Restore
    workflow without  any special configuration.
Please ensure you have applied the right way to do package restore in your solution hosted in VSO and try to build again.

What OSX was installed when you purchased your Mac? Even though it was installed you should have received the install disk(s) as the Utilities are on those.
If you do not have the install disk you can try contacting Apple and see if they can supply one,(explain you never received at purchase) you will need the build info of your machine, which can be found by clicking the Apple logo in the menu bar>About This Mac>More Info, and it should be in the first window under hardware overview. • What are the steps I need to backup my TFS 2013 Express system?

About 6 months ago I installed TFS 2013 Express onto my PC. Been using it ever since and lovin' it! Unfortunately my PC is beginning to act very badly, so I'm thinking the smartest thing I should do now is backup everything, including my TFS 2013 Express
system/database. How do I get started at doing that?

    Hi Rod,
    Thanks for your post.
Please launch your TFS Admin Console, if there’s Scheduled Backups feature in your TFS Admin Console, you can create backup plan use this feature to back up your TFS. Please refer to this document:
    https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh561429.aspx.
Or you can manually back up TFS Server, please refer to:

  • Automatic package restore not firing

I have a VS2013 c# solution that am trying to build on our TFS 2013 build server.  Some projects have nuget package dependencies.  For some reason, the build server does not run the automatic package restore even though I am using TfvcTemplate.12
    for my build template.
My solution has a .nuget folder with a nuget.config and no nuget.exe or nuget.targets.
How do you troubleshoot this scenario?
    thanks
    scott

    Hi Scott,
    Thanks for your post.
If using default TfvcTemplate.12.xaml template, TFS 2013 Build will run below two commands in order and separately to build solution on build agent machine, you can check the information in your diagnostic build log when open build in Web Access.
    C:\Program Files\Microsoft Team Foundation Server 12.0\Tools\nuget.exe restore "C:\Builds\ID\teamprojectname\builddefinitionname\src\solutionname.sln" -NonInteractive
    C:\Program Files (x86)\MSBuild\12.0\bin\amd64\MSBuild.exe /nologo /noconsolelogger "C:\Builds\ID\teamprojectname\builddefinitionname\src\solutionname.sln"
Please manually run above two commands on your build agent machine to check the result. You need ensure you can manually build your solution on build agent machine.

  • Asking for iCloud account name and password to play iTunes radio when I have done it in the past many times without this question.  Will not accept my apple id and password.  Will not save my changed password.  Where do I start?

I have a MAC with OS X Yosemite, version 10.10.2, 8GB, 2.7 GHz, intel core i5.  Until 2 days ago, I could click on iTunes radio, pick my station and listen.  Then 2 days ago, I do this and system asks for my iCloud account id and password.  Does not recognize apple id or password.  I change the password, does not save it.   Screen that lists 2 step verification asks for added security questions, I do those and still will not allow me access.  What do I do and where do I start?  I thought I should download the update to OS X.  I did that, still no change.  Please help direct me to where I need to go to fix this problem.

Restoring an iPad from an iTunes-generated backup should not require an Apple ID password.
Did you encrypt the iPad backup? If so, then trying to restore will require entering the encryption password.

  • Dont know where to even start

Well I really need som help on where to even start this program? I'd send u what i have so far but its so full of errors i'd be embarsed. I'll prob need to just start a new and was wondering where the heck i should even begin:
Problem Statement: Your need to Create a public class 'MathQuiz' that extends JApplet and implements ActionListner. Basically the program is aimed at helping elementary school students learn basic math operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication, division and additionally the modulus operator.
Program first prompts user for an integer 1 to 5 to indicate choice of math operation in a JTextField as 1: for addition 2: for subtraction 3: for multiplication 4: for division (typically in java integer division) and 5: for modulus (remainder value in a division).
Use Math.random() to produce two positive integers, first integer in the range of 11 to 20 and second integer in the range of 1 to 10. Then frame a question of user's choice of operation with these two numbers and prompt user for his response to the question.
Accept user's response in a JTextField and upon click of "Enter" button evaluate user's response and display message in applet container's status bar. If the response is correct display "Very good!" and ask another question of the same math operation. If the response is wrong display" No. Please try again" on applet's status bar and let user try the same question until the user gets it right.
A separate method is to be defined to generate question that takes the argument of user's choice, generates the random numbers in required range and employing 'switch' selection structure formulates the appropriate question. This method should be called each time user changes his choice in the JTextField and each time the user answers questions correctly.
If the user enters a number other than 1 to 5 in the choice JTextField, program should display 'Invalid input" message is status bar and instead of framing a question prompt the user for only "valid" choice number.
I'm new at this so this is quite a task for me to tackle. any sugestions would be greatly appricated!
well i guess i'll give what i've got so far dont laugh to hard.

  • TFS 2010 to TFS 2013 Migration stuck at step 13

    Hi,
We've been trying to migrate our TFS 2010 collections to TFS 2013, but we always get stuck at Step 13 of 793.  We tried 3x already.  For the first try we waited around 8 hours, and decided to just restart.  On the second try, we waited for more
than 13 hours and still no joy.  And the third try is still going.
We are using Windows Server 2012 R2 for both Application Tier and SQL Server.  Windows 2008 R2 for Sharepoint Server.  SQL Server 2012 with SP1 Standard for the SQL Server.
Our TFS 2010 is a single server setup (Windows 2008 R2).  And we are migrating now to a tiered architecture (a separate machine for sharepoint, another for SQL Server and another for the application tier).  Could this be what's causing the 'stuck'?
I've followed the ALM rangers document, followed the requirements (i.e. Windows version, SQL Server version, etc), read articles from forums and I think we've done everything that we need to. Note that we tried migrating to TFS 2012 ages ago and it did
migrate successfully, but we're thinking TFS 2013 is available now so might as well go to TFS 2013.  Do we need to migrate to TFS 2012 first?  But that's what the documents say, TFS 2010 can be a direct migration to TFS 2013, right?
There are four collections in our TFS 2010, and the other three migrates fine.  It's the DefaultCollection that is getting stuck.  The default collection is around 170GB in size.   When we did the migration to TFS 2012 before, it was 150GB in
size and finished in around 5 hours.
Can anyone let me know or point me to the right direction on how to address this issue?  I've looked at the logs and can't see anything that stands out; no errors mentioned.  Is there anything else that I could look at?  Or is ther any profiling
that I can enable to see what might be causing the issue?  I've searched google and only found a couple forums that has the same issue.  One was resolved because of the Max Parallelism and we did that one as well but still no joy.
    Appreciate any ideas.  Thanks heaps.
    Kindest regards,

    Hi,
    Thanks for your post.
What's the result of your third try?
What's the document are you following?
From TFS upgrade requirements, You can upgrade TFS 2013 from Team Foundation Server 2010 directly.
If you’re using SQL Server 2012 with SP1, we recommend you also apply
cumulative update 2 on top of SP1 to address a critical SQL Server bug around resource consumption. This isn’t a hard requirement because the bug only affects a small number of instances, but we wanted you to be aware of it. If you don’t apply CU2, you
should apply a SQL Server hotfix (KB2793634) to addresses another (different) issue where SQL Server 2012 with SP1 might request an excessive amount of restarts.

  • ISE Addon for Checkout or Checkins via TFS 2013

    Hi
I am coordination the development of some PowerShell scripts to work against our SharePoint Farm.  Now as there is more that just me developing these scripts, I think we need to start doing regular checkin and checkouts in our TFS 2013.  Anyway,
I naively thought there must be an addon  I could add to ISE for this; since it seems such a common requirement. However, there does seem much out there that is actively being used. Are there alternatives that are widely used such a series of PS functions
    anyone knows about.
    Daniel
    Freelance consultant

    Hi Daniel,
If you want to complete checkout in Powershell ISE automatically, please go through this article:
Protect Your PowerShell Scripts with Version Control
In addition, you can also refer to this script
PowerShell ISE-specific profile script, which performs a few simple things:
Checks if you have the TFS client installed (eg Team Explorer).
Registers for ISE events on each open file and any files you open later.
Upon editing of a file, if it is TFS-managed then checks it out.
The end result is the same TFS workflow experience from within the PowerShell ISE as Visual Studio provides.
    Refer to:

  • Migrating from Git to TFS 2013

    Hi,
I have TFS 2013 and want to migrate GIT source code to TFS. I was able to migrate the code with history but want to ask for a way where by I can keep branches also intact. I want to give away from GIT and want to use Git support from TFS itself.
    Thanks,
    Suman

    Hi Suman,
Since you use GitHub, and it's a 3rd party hosted service which like Visual Studio Online(TFS online). Actually, you can connect to Git team project of Visual Studio Online and publish your git repository to GitHub. And also connect to the git repository
via Team Explorer. As for Visual Studio Online, Microsoft is working on adding support to allow Git repos to be added to
TFVC team projects in the near future. Check the user voice for more info:
    http://visualstudio.uservoice.com/forums/121579-visual-studio/suggestions/3612921-support-converting-tfs-online-project-from-tfsvc-t
For your scenario, you might need to move from GitHub to TFS git repostiry, then import a git repository to TFS. Please check the links below for the detailed information:

  • Does On-Premise TFS 2013 work with Office 365 natively or do I need an Exchange/O365 Hybrid solution?

Hello. We currently have an on-premise Exchange 2010 environment with 2 servers setup in a DAG. Our Development Department uses an on-premise TFS 2013 server for everything, they can't work without
it. Upper Management wants the IT Dept to move the company from on-premise Exchange 2010 DAG to Office 365. My concern is TFS 2013 since it uses AD and Exchange for workflow notifications. An employee's AD account is given permission to resources
inside TFS 2013 and since Exchange attributes are tied to their AD account they receive workflow notifications. My question is will I need to keep a permanent Exchange 2010/O365 Hybrid solution in-place in order for TFS 2013 to continue function
properly? If the answer is yes than that is fine, I am just looking for confirmation before I start the project. I would appreciate any advice on this topic.<o:p></o:p>
    Thanks<o:p></o:p>
    <o:p></o:p>

    Hi Cirbin,
As far as I know, it's not supported to integrate TFS 2013 with Office 365. You can check the
    link for more information.
For your situation, whether keep a permanent Exchange 2010/O365 Hybrid solution or not, you might open a new thread in SharePoint/Exchange forum for a better response.  From the thred, seems you need  to keep the hybrid solution.
And for integration Office 365 users to TFS, please vote the user voice

  • Mapping multiple complete states in TFS 2013 process template causing import issues.

We are in the process of upgrading our current TFS 2012.4 environemnt to TFS 2013.4  .In the test upgrade,we found some issues when it comes to mapping multiple Complete states in the process configuration for the backlog items under Requirements
Category which was not the case in TFS 2012.4
In the process configuration, you can map each state to one of three metastates.
    Proposed
    InProgress
    Complete
In TFS 2012, we have projects using multiple states mapped to "Complete" metastate.
I can see below msdn documentaion which says "You can have only one State mapped to
    type="Complete"
    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh500413.aspx
I would like to know why is this step taken by Microsoft on not to have multiple states mapped to type="complete"
Is there any alternative solution to avoid this situation? It would be really difficult to update all the projects having situation where
    multiple states mapped to type="complete".
Looking forward to hear from Microsoft Product Team on this.
    j_bon

    Hi j_bon,
I have verified the process configuration for TFS 2012 and TFS 2013, and it's you mentioned in the post. It's changed in TFS 2013, you can have only one State mapped to
    type="Complete".
For the change, if you have concerns, please submit it to Microsoft Connect Feedback portal at:
    https://connect.microsoft.com/VisualStudio.
Microsoft engineers will evaluate it seriously.

  • Could TFS 2013 build service connect to TFS 2010 server?

I am using the TFS 2010 since 2011, both TFS 2010 Server and TFS 2010 build service are installed on a separate Windows 2008 R2 x64 Server, I have application written in C# and .net 4.0 framework.
Recently, I want to upgrade the application to .net framework 4.5. I installed a Windows 2012 R2 x64 server and installed a TFS 2013 build service (since TFS 2010 build service doesn't support Windows 2012 R2 x64 server); however, the TFS
2013 build service seem to be not support the TFS 2010 server.
I need the old TFS 2010 build service to build the bug fix .net framework 4.0 (with other old dependency library) package for production and I need a new TFS 2013 build service to build the next version .net framework 4.5 (with upgrade dependency library) application.
Both new and old TFS build service have to be co-exist.
Does anyone know if it is possible to let TFS 2013 build service work with TFS 2010 server?
Or any suggestion on this scenario?

    Hi  Panco,
Based on your description, you can use TFS 2010 build service to build the .net framework 4.0 and .net framework 4.5 applications. You need to install the corresponding dependencies on the bulid machine before building. And also build on the build machine
locally make sure you can build successfully locally before TFS build.
Since you already set up TFS 2013 build service, you can configure it to a team project collection in TFS 2010 to have a try. As far as I know, seems it's fine to do the building. If you have other considerations or concerns, please elaborate
    more details about your scenario.

  • Move a collection from TFS 2012 to TFS 2013

I am trying to move a project collection on a TS 2012 server to a TFS 2013 server.
    Detached the collection
    Backup up the collection database.
Restored the database on the TFS 2013 collection DB server.
In TFS admin console when I try to attach the collection, it's not appearing as one of the available databases.
Is there any thing wrong in the above steps?
    Thanks
    A

    Hi A,
    Thanks for your post.
    Your steps seems correct.
After you restored the database to TFS 2013 Server’s SQL Server, please ensure you can see that database in SQL Server.
And you can refer to the steps in this
document, to compare and ensure your steps are correct.
