Packaging EJB's in J2EE Tutorial...
There is a discrepancy between the docs in the J2EE tutorial and the DeployTool interface that is making it hard for me to figure out how to get the sample converter EJB successfully deployed.
The docs in the new SDK v. 1.3.2 references single Home and Remote Interface combo boxes that need to populated for the bean but the dialogue box in the tool has two combo boxes for each interface, namely a "Local Interface" and a "Local Home Interface" and a "Remote Interface" and "Remote Home Interface".
I have had trouble translating the instructions to figure out which of these boxes I need to populate to make this work. One combination resulted in a deploytime error on the bean and another gave me a runtime error on the servlet.
Has anybody else run into this and if so, how did you get past it?
Thanks
John
If your used the older deploytool then use the bottom two 'remote' boxes and leave the top two 'local' boxes empty.
Basically Local means within the container
and
remote means outside the container.
If you want to change yours to be local I think you need to subclass differently. I have not done it yet!

Hi,
I am trying Converter example in J2EE tutorial.
I have created ConverterJAR and ConverterWAR
ConverterJAR is verified sucessfully when using verifier option
When verifying ConverterWAR i am getting the following error

For [ /ConverterWAR ]
Error: class [ converter.ConverterHome ] cannot be found within this jar [ war-ic.war ].
Error: Class [ converter.Converter ] not found in WEB-INF/classes or WEB-INF/lib.
For [ /ConverterWAR ]
Error: class [ converter.Converter ] cannot be found within this jar [ war-ic.war ].
Please let me know if anybody aware of this problemI have created ConverterJAR and ConverterWAR
ConverterJAR is verified sucessfully when using

When verifying ConverterWAR i am getting the
following errorCreate an EJB-client JAR which will contain only the home and remote interfaces. Place it in WEB-INF/lib of your webapp and recreate your WAR. This should solve the problem. :)

Cant run J2EE tutorial DukesBank ...
Hello,
I am new in Java and J2EE and want just run the J2EE tutorial DukesBank which i have downloaded from java.sun.com.
Therefore are following steps done:
1. starting the J2EE server (j2ee -start)
2. starting the cloudscape database (cloudscape -start)
3. starting deploytool
4. compile the sources (ant compile-ejb)
5. package the ejbs (ant package-ejb)
Now when i use the verifier in the deploytool then i got the error message:
FAILED: method [makePayment] does not throw valid application exception in Remote/Local interface [com.sun.ebank.ejb.tx.TxController]
I think this causes also the error message which i got when i goto localhost/bank in the webbrowser:
Server Error
Your request cannot be completed. The server got the following error
null
So now i have modified the interface TxController.java with deleting the method 'makePayment', also in TxControllerBean.java.
Then i compiled they again (ant compile-ejb and ant package-ejb) but I have the same problem again, so has the tutorial an error or do i need to modify something else ?!?
Many thanks for every help

Plato23DukesBank - RemoteException in AppClient package
The two ant invocations "ant compile-ejb" and "ant package-ejb" take care of of the EJBs. The simplest to way to bring Bank up is "ant all" and there is no need of Deploytool though you will need J2EE Server up.
The context root of the Bank is simply "bank" and the BankAdmin can be run using "runclient.bat" (with a few vanity changes).
This is as far as I go for running the Bank. But when I tried to activate the various functions in the BankAdmin, I kept getting "RemoteException" and could neither create accounts nor customers.
Can anybody out there help? Thanks

Anyone else seen this? It works ok with Hypersonic (though i can't get the
tutorial app to run with hypersonic - see my earlier post).
Alex.Some bugs in RCs sometimes don't make it into Bugzilla as it is a
release candidate and not production quality.
I would reocmmend upgrading as it fixes a number of major bug fixes and
you should be able to use the same eval key.

I'm using Sybase JConnect JDBC driver (com.sybase.jdbc2.jdbc.SybDriver in

jConnect (TM) for JDBC(TM)/5.5(Build 25008)/P/JDK12/Tue May 29 14:37:46

Should I upgrade from RC1 to RC2, and if so, can I continue to use the
same eval license key or can i download a new one?

I have not done the tutorial.. so bare with me..
the errors your seeing can mean many things.. but above all else it means that you've got a problem either connecting or communicating to the rmi_server you created or the rmiRegistry
My suggestion is this...
First try a simpler application.
How about a simple server that returns a string
and sets a string.
then a client app that can read the server string and envoke a change to it...
This will show the basics involved.
let me know your toughts..

The problem is that these two classes are not in the same source file. They cannot be since there can be one and only one public class in a source file.
So how come ConverterHome can refer to Converter without import? -

Can some one please help me.
thanksWhen i run the "asant build" command in
"c:\java\j2eetutorial\examples\web\bookstore1"
directory i get compile error with last few lines as
follows.Did you package the bookstore common files as described in Chapter 3? My guess is that you didn't include bookstore.jar from <INSTALL>/j2eetutorial14/examples/build/web/bookstore/dist/.

Hi,
1) Im new to J2EE programming.
Can you suggest me a good site or books which provides me in detail how to program with J2EE with examples, espically deploying a EJB, with any of the application server.
2) I tried the steps provided in the java tutorial (http://java.sun.com/j2ee/tutorial/), but for some reason im not able to deploy my simple ejb application using J2SEE1.4 beta version. Im not able to specify the JNDI name. Even the JNDI tab which should be there is missing.
3) Im using Windows98, with JDK.1.4.0 & J2SEE1.4 beta version.Can I run J2EE1.4 beta version in Windows98 or do i require Windows 2000/XP/NT ?
Can you suggest me what am i doing wrong?
Thanks!!!Take a look at http://groups.msn.com/J2EETools. It'll help you deploy your applications.

J2EE Tutorial With Remote Client
Where can I find a J2EE tutorial that demonstrates a remote client accessing an EJB? The Sun tutorial are all localized examples. Does a remote client have to run on a J2EE server?
Thanks,
-RayRemote Clients do not have to run in a J2EE server. All you need is the j2ee.jar and your app server's required runtime jar file(s) e.g oracle9iAS(oc4j.jar) and the .properties files.
Let me know if you need any more information. -
I know this has come up before in the forum, but the ansers didnt solve my problem.
I have been trying to deploy and run the bookstore examples for the J2EE tutorial online. I would be extremely grateful if someone out there who has setup and run these tutorials on the Windows platform could let me know exactly what environment variables etc. I should be configuring.
I have added JAVA_HOME and J2EE_HOME to the environemt variables, pointing to the java sdk and J2EE application server installation ocation respectively.
I also tried setting the j2ee.home and j2ee.tutorial.home attributes in the build.propoperties file, but I cant get it all to work.
Please tell me the environment variables, system variables (if different), CLASSPATH, and any other setup I need to do.
C.Sorry, I was at work earlier and couldnt get all the info.
I have set the following environment variables:
JAVA_HOME = C:\j2sdk1.4.2_04
J2EE_HOME = C:\Sun\AppServer
CLASSPATH = .;D:\Packages;%J2EE_HOME%\lib\j2ee.jarI keep my own packages in the D:\Packages folder.
I came across some tutorial info that says to also add the j2ee.home and j2ee.tutorial.home properties in the file <INSTALL>j2seetutorial14/examles/common/build.properties. This looks like the following:
j2ee.home=C:\\Sun\\AppServer
j2ee.tutorial.home=D:\\J2EE\\j2eetutorial14
sunone.home=${j2ee.home}
admin.password.file=${j2ee.tutorial.home}/examples/common/admin-password.txt
admin.host=localhost
admin.user=admin
admin.port=4848
https.port=8181
domain.resources="domain.resources"
domain.resources.port=8080
db.root=${j2ee.home}/pointbase
db.driver=com.pointbase.jdbc.jdbcUniversalDriver
db.host=localhost
db.port=9092
db.sid=sun-appserv-samples
db.url=jdbc:pointbase:server://${db.host}:${db.port}/${db.sid}
db.user=pbpublic
db.pwd=pbpublic
url.prop=DatabaseName
ds.class=com.pointbase.jdbc.jdbcDataSource
db.jvmargs=-ms16m -mx32m Note that the line breaks don't show in this browser, or in notepad when I edited it - got the 'square' character when I opened that, but I think the content is right.
I also tried setting the username above and the username in the file admin-passport., but that didnt work either. -
I was looking at J2EE Examples Using the JMS API by Kim Haase
it mention that
The examples are in the directory tutorial/jms/examples. All the examples can be packaged, deployed, and run using the Ant tool. Each example has a build.xml file that refers to a targets.xml file and a build.properties file in the directory tutorial/jms/examples/common.
except I could'nt find that directory at all. could anybody show me a linked I can download the examples codes?Go to http://java.sun.com/j2ee/1.4/docs/tutorial/index.html.
On the left sidebar, click Download.
Click J2EE 1.4 Tutorial.
Click Tutorial Addendum.
Scroll down to the section "Download the J2EE Tutorial Addendum." Read the Installation Instructions. Then choose your platform and click the Download button. The download includes all the tutorial examples.

Re. J2EE Tutorial - Setting
Hi,
I am familiar to J2EE, but new to the new technlogies & working wth IDEs. I know this is not the right forum for my question, but i didn't find the best forum for my question. I have put the same question in J2EE SDK, so please ignore in that forum.
I am learning with J2EE Tutorial with NetBeans. I create the examples on myself as mentioned in the tutorial. Currently, i m working on savingsAccount EJB. My problem is, on creating DB.
I write
asant -buildfile create-db.xmlas mentioned in tutorial.
My root folder is D:\Trupti\Tutorials\J2EE-NB TUTORIAL\Projects
I copied the common.properties & database.properties in my root folder. I needed to change my appserv folder, i did. Now still what is missing, y does it give this error msg. Where am i going wrong. If anybody can help would be really appreciative.
On Dos prompt it gives as -
D:\Trupti\Tutorials\J2EE-NB TUTORIAL\Projects\savingsAccount>asant -buildfile cr
eate-db.xml
Buildfile: create-db.xml

D:\Trupti\Tutorials\J2EE-NB TUTORIAL\Projects\savingsAccount>I hope i get some solution to it asap. If anybody has idea, which is the right forum for this question, please inform me.
Thanks
TruptiWell Lan, Yes I am using J2EE 1.4 Tutorial with Netbeans Version - the tutorial is specially designed to work with NetBeans & Sun AppSer.
The tutorial says to run this command on command line. Here is the
text from the tutorial that explains steps to create database:-
Running the SavingsAccount Example
Before you run this example, you have to create the database and deploy the
SavingsAccount.jar file.
Creating the Sample Database
The instructions that follow explain how to use the SavingsAccountBean example
with PointBase, the database software that is included in the Application
Server bundle.
1. In the IDE, choose ToolsPointBase DatabaseStart Local PointBase Database.
2. Create the database tables by running the create.sql script.
a. Make sure that the appsrv.root property in your
<INSTALL>/j2eetutorial14/examples/ file points to the location of
your local Application Server installation. ********* HERE MY FOLDER POINTS TO THE SERVER ************
b. In a terminal window, go to this directory:
<INSTALL>/j2eetutorial14/examples/ejb/savingsaccount/
c. Type the following command, which runs the create.sql script:
asant -buildfile create-db.xml
3. In the Runtime window, expand the Databases node, right-click the
jdbc:pointbase:server://localhost:9092/sun-appserv-samples
node, and choose Connect. Type pbpublic as the password and click OK.
Once the connection is established, expand the connection nodefs Tables node. There should be a node for the SAVINGSACCOUNT table.
iS THEIR ANY OTHER WAY to run the create.sql script directly.
Thanks
