Pacman is dying =(

Alright, I've been playing around with this for a while, I'm at my wits end.

delete the package errors packages in /var/cache/pacman/pkg/ and change your mirrors by moving them up on the list in /etc/pacman.d/extra

  • [SOLVED] pacman -Syu - Installation just died

    I just ran my weekly pacman -Syu on my install.  I can't remember what updates were available but one was Linux firmware.  I did the command from SSH when putty lost connection.  I logged into my ESXi VM console to find it with lots of information that I really have no idea on.  Neither the normal boot or the Fallback work.  I really should have snap shotted the VM prior to the upgrade
    Any work around?

    first of all, you wouldn't start the ssh session in screen ofc, that makes no sense whatsoever. You start screen in your ssh session on the server, and by doing this, the following:
    Swarfega wrote:I did the command from SSH when putty lost connection.
    won't be a problem anymore, since nothing depends on the ssh connection anymore.
    You just reconnect, screen -r and go on.
    Second: as you see in the second quote, he didn't say anything about a kernel panic, just a lost ssh connection and the problems it caused. If you use screen on the server, literally nothing happens if you lose your ssh connection, you can even scroll back in screen to see what happened while you disconnected.

  • Power failure during pacman sync - recovery?

    Hi,
    Due to a flaky power brick, my laptop died suddenly amid a large upgrade run (kde-4.10.1 and a few other bits). After reboot, I found that lots of files were present but empty, and that pacman doesn't see them as owned by any package (when I know this is erroneous). I was tipped off to this by ldconfig (when invoked during the subsequent run of pacman -Syu) telling me lots of the KDE libs were empty.
    I dealt with all the libs identified there by identifying each one's owner (guesswork, since pacman -Qo returned nothing) and running pacman -Sf for each package.
    However, I've got no way of knowing what other files are borked. I just found kdialog also affected, and it looks like some wallpaper images too - KDE starts, but I dread to think what else is missing.
    Can anyone suggest how I can fully recover the situation? Many, many thanks in advance.

    Hi cfr, thanks for the reply.
    Both suggestions helped along, though I think I must have already dealt with most or all of the packages that were in mid-upgrade (or so recently the disk hadn't sync'd yet?) when the crash happened. Here's the list of empy files courtesy of find, with a couple of snips for brevity:

    Most of these seem to (a) make sense to be empty on my system (eg I don't use cups or mysql), or (b) it's plausible that they're meant to be empty for whatever reason (eg the perl .bs files and python __init__.py files, which seem to ALL be empty). The many empty .libs in libreoffice seem odd, but I ran pacman -Sf on all its packages and they remained empty so I assume this is expected.
    However, if there's anything else in that list that shouldn't be empty, do please sing out.

  • [solved] Pacman -Suy killed libdbus?

    Hmm, did a pacman -Suy a few hours ago, oddly enough my dbus died, can't even find libdbus on my filesystem anymore. When I was upgrading I had a similar problem to this thread: http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=57902 not sure on if the errors were the same, but it was similar. So I did a pacman -Suyf(as I have done many times before) to find out that it killed my libdbus. My theory is maybe the mirrors I am choosing arn't in sync with eachother. Guess I'll wait for a day or so and hope another pacman -Suy fixes it.

    Try installing dbus-core and dbus again.
    By the way, if you ever need to us -f, then you should just did it for the package that needs it.  Even then, you should avoid using -f at all...

  • Maybe solved pacman : could not open package: File too large

    please help! i just made a PKGBUILD for Unreal Tournament 2004 (spent a lot of time on it!) now it says it can't install it.  the finished file is 2.6gb.  what to do?  thanks much.. i want to upload it to AUR.

    exactly.. its reads the files and installs it according to Arch.  how do i get pacman to not die?? thanks..

  • Pacman dependency issue: cannot find dependency files

    Hello!
    Some weeks ago I upgraded my system using pacman -Suy running in terminal inside screen. For some reason the terminal and screen died and pacman got interrupted in the middle of a big upgrade. After that my box behaves very strangely. For instance I cannot longer start screen:
    $ screen
    reopen fifo /tmp/screens/S-dan/5120.pts-1.laptop: No such file or directory
    I no longer have perl installed, and I seem to miss all the standard c-libraries
    $ gcc test.c
    test.c:1:19: error: stdio.h No such file or directory
    I do not know if this above is of relevance, but when I try using pacman now I get  a error on not being able to find the »depends» files of glibc and perl. The directory they are being looked for at has a double slash // very odd. This is an output:
    # pacman -Suy

    Any ideas if this is fixable? I havent found anything here on the forums or on the interwebs. I could do a fresh reinstall, but maybe I could save some time by just fixing this.
    Thanks in advance for any help,
    Dan

    Errors occurred, no packages were upgraded.
    And the problem transists. I tried pacman -R glibc perl but it didn't go too well, got complaints on practically everything depending on glibc. Is it a good or bad idea to manually delete all the files listed above? There surely has to be a better way...
    thanks, Dan

  • [SOLVED] Pacman unable to install packages due to invalid or corrup...

    Hullo,
    I know this is a common error judging by the results google lists for that subject. But all sollutions I found don't work for my specific case.
    My battery died on my laptop and when I rebooted and tried to install a package pacman complained the database was locked (can't remember if I was installing something or else while my battery died, happend while I was away).
    So since I've just rebooted I deleted the lock-file by hand. Now when ever I tried to install something it would complain:
    error: xyz: signature from "xyz @ zyx" is unknown trust
    :: File /var/cache/pacman/pkg/packagexyz.pkg.tar.xz is corrupted (invalid or corrupted package (PGP signature)).
    Do you want to delete it? [Y/n] y
    error: failed to commit transaction (invalid or corrupted package (PGP signature))
    So I removed /etc/pacman.d/gnupg, cleared the package-cache and ran pacman-key --init:
    gpg: /etc/pacman.d/gnupg/trustdb.gpg: trustdb created
    gpg: no ultimately trusted keys found

    followed by pacman-key --populate archlinux:
    ==> Appending keys from archlinux.gpg...
    gpg: no valid OpenPGP data found.
    ==> Updating trust database...
    gpg: no need for a trustdb check
    and pacman-key --refresh-keys:
    gpg: refreshing 1 key from hkp://pool.sks-keyservers.net
    gpg: requesting key B99666F8 from hkp server pool.sks-keyservers.net
    gpgkeys: key AA3E1E751B31AB9C2E6CDA64F2A911E7B99666F8 can't be retrieved
    gpg: no valid OpenPGP data found.
    gpg: Total number processed: 0
    ==> ERROR: A specified local key could not be updated from a keyserver.
    It looks like it's not doing much. Anyway, trying to install packages or upgrading the system results in me having to import a bunch of keys and then failing with the before mentioned error.
    Anything I can do?
    Thanks

  • Cannot upgrade pacman due to conflict with package-query [SOLVED]

    Package query 0.9 requires pacman <4, package-query 1 requires pacman >=4, therefore I am totally unable to upgrade, even using pacman -f
    I'm aware that package-query is unsupported software, but this seems a bit stupid to me! Am I to uninstall package-query and therefore yaourt, only to reinstall them by hand, or is there a safe workaround?

    Or, realistically, 5 minutes.
    But if that is too much for you to spare, rather than bemoaning the fact that the developers have spent a significant amount of time and effort on this upgrade that will cause you such inconvenience, you could just install another distro - that would probably eat a day.
    Every other distro I've tried is inferior and eats up far more frustration time than Arch, which is why it's now on all my machines. I'm still putting off upgrading my 4 machines, though - because painful recent experience tells me that the chances of all 4 getting through this without day-eating breakage is about 6% (If you want a laugh at my expense, see this woeful example of breakage https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/27385). And yes, I'm aware that the longer I put it off, the worse my chances get.
    Edit:
    machine one (netbook).
    Time taken so far: 44 minutes (inc reading up on a few errors, plus line-by-line comparison of rc.conf.pacnew, reboot plus check of basic system workiness, plus waiting unsuccessfully for package-query source to download).
    Status: yaourt uninstallable (package-query git server appears to be down), openjdk6 broken due to bug, system otherwise appears healthy.
    Prognosis: Total 90 minutes for 4 machines seems a reasonable (optimistic) estimate, but I'll further put the other machines off until package-query git server is back up and running.
    And many apologies, this has veered somewhat off-topic and off-forum. I will probably make this my last post and let it die.
    Further edit: How do I mark a thread as SOLVED? I can't see an option anywhere, or any way to edit the thread title!
    edit: Nevermind, the trick is to edit the first post in the thread, it would seem.

  • Pacman -Syu hangs

    Hello
    I'm very happy with Arch Linux, but today, the first update since three weeks, pacman hangs for five minutes and counting. No CPU usage or so. Just hangs in my ps -ef.
    Is this normal?

    I have a Thinkpad T22, which I use infrequently.  Now I need to get a WiFi PCcard working (Netgear 511v2 with the Marwell chipset - boo) so I did a pacman -Suy to get the latest and greatest software. The upgrade was some 500MB and installation size over 1GB!
    However, the pacman -Suy just killed the computer when checking the packages (nothing moved, all keys dead etc) - so I tried again. This time it came through quite a number of package checks, but then it died again. Since I was doing other work, I do not know exactly when, but that seems to vary. After this second attempt the Thinkpad does not boot properly any more.
    My question is: is there a limit for upgrade installation size (maybe RAM dependent)?
    Also, if someone has any advice for me I would be grateful.

    Am i correct in doing it this way ?????
    It seemed to work ok.

    First off - the antesis mirror is known to be borky and cause pacman 2.8 to die like that - remove it from your mirrors list to ensure the 'death' doesn't happen again.
    Otherwise, that's a fine way to ignore the package until the mirrors sync correctly - which I'm assuming is the problem (I haven't really looked at the dbs yet)

    Hi.
    I was installing foomatic-db when my laptop died. Since then every time I use pacman i get this message
    error: could not open file /var/lib/pacman/local/foomatic-db-1:4.0.15_20120406-1/desc: No such file or directory
    I can still use pacman without problems but is there a way to get rid of the error-message coming every time?

    When I try to reinstall I get a lot of "exists in filesystem"-messages. This is the bottom part of the list because it goes on for long.

  • PacMan and His Many Friends (Ghosts)

    Well, my friend and I are working very diligently on a Pacman game and had it working perfectly... with just PacMan. We have never really explored or used threads, and have only used buffering sporadically.
    So we decided to use Threads on this project of ours, since we wanted the Ghosts each to move at their own speed, and PacMan at his own, of course. So we wrote up our Ghost class... which reads something like this:
    import java.lang.Thread;
    import java.awt.Color;
    import java.awt.Graphics;
    import java.awt.Point;
    import javax.swing.JApplet;
    import java.awt.Image;
    public class Ghost extends Thread{
         //Data Fields
         private Graphics g,G;
         private Image Buffer;
         private JApplet app;
         private int gX,gY,gridSize,speed;
         private char direction;
         private Point destination,homePoint;
         private int state;
         private String strat;
         private Color color;
         private boolean staticRoute,running;
         private Sleeper s;
         Ghost(){}
         Ghost(JApplet app,Graphics G,int x,int y,String s, Color c, int gridSize, int speed){
              this.app=app;
              Buffer = app.createImage(app.getWidth(),app.getHeight());
              Graphics g=Buffer.getGraphics();
              this.G=G;
              gX=x;
              gY=y;
              homePoint = new Point(x,y);
              strat=s;
              color=c;
              this.gridSize=gridSize;
              this.speed=speed;
              this.s = new Sleeper();
              this.g=g;
              running=true;
              calcDestination();
         public int getX(){ return gX; }
         public int getY(){ return gY; }
         public String getStrat(){ return strat; }
         public int getState(){ return state; }
         public Color getColor(){ return color; }
         public void run(){
              while(running){
                   if(destination.equals(new Point(gX,gY)))
                        staticRoute=false;
                   calcDestination();
                   if(direction=='R')
                        PacMan.drawLevel(g,gX-1,gY);
                   else if(direction=='L')
                        PacMan.drawLevel(g,gX+1,gY);
                   draw();
                   s.sleep(speed);
                   G.drawImage(Buffer,0,0,app);
         public void stopRun(){
              running=false;
         public void die(){
              destination = new Point((int)homePoint.getX(),(int)homePoint.getY());
              staticRoute=true;
         public void draw(){
              g.setColor(color);
              g.fillOval(((gX+1)*gridSize-(gridSize*2))+2,((gY+1)*gridSize-(gridSize*2))+2,(gridSize*3)-4,(gridSize*3)-4);
         public void calcDestination(){ //Doesn't work as it will in final version, just makes it go back and forth along the bottom or top... trying to get two ghosts going at once
              if(!staticRoute){
                   if(strat.equals("Test")){
                        if(gX==2 && gY==42){
                             destination = new Point(30,42);
                             direction='R';
                        else{
                             destination = new Point(2,42);
                             direction='L';
                        staticRoute=true;
                   if(strat.equals("Test2")){
                        if(gX==2 && gY==2){
                             destination = new Point(30,2);
                             direction='R';
                        else{
                             destination = new Point(2,2);
                             direction='L';
                        staticRoute=true;
              calcPoint();
         public void calcPoint(){  //Excuse the utter stupidity of this method.  It is merely for testing and will be better implemented later.
              if(gY==(int)destination.getY() && (int)destination.getX()>gX)
                   gX++;
              else
                   gX--;
    }Let me explain part of the development behind this...
    First off we started with just PacMan.java. I wrote it pretty much on my own and made it so it would read a series of numbers from a textfile to generate a level. It also contained the speed and how much pelets were worth, but that's not relevant. It worked fine, all of it.
    Then the next step was having a yellow 'circle' move around in that field in the way we wanted it to. That also worked.
    The third step was implementing the warps, which could be represented and generated from the text field itself. This worked and was implemented quite well. However, we did not use Threads up until now.
    The fourth and current step was the Ghost implementation. This isn't going as planned. We use two Graphics objects in our PacMan class (which extends JApplet) and simply drew everything in one step to the 'invisible' one, then at the end of the paint method, draw it all over to the 'visible' graphics object. That worked fine in the previous steps, as mentioned above. However, we ran into a problem with the different speeds of the Ghosts. We passed in the 'invisible' Graphics object and had the Ghosts draw themselves to that via the run method. That worked fine if the speed was the same, but when it was different it created problems. Another problem was that since we passed in the SAME Graphics object, if one of the two Ghost instances changed the color, then it could affect the color of what was being drawn in the main PacMan class. (Usually during the inital display of the level. We'd have red-colored dots.)
    I know this all sounds very... overwhelming.. and trust me, it is for us too. I'm just not sure how to go about solving this problem. If you look at the code closely, I have two Graphics objects for each Ghost. One is the main one from the app, and the other is the one it draws itself to so it prevents Color conflicts. Then at the end of the 'run' method we try drawing the individual Ghost Graphics object to the bigger one... and it all just jumbles up.
    I guess to cut to the chase, what I'm asking for is advice on how to have multiple Ghost Threads running and drawing constantly without conflicts with color or too much lag. (I noticed when we set all the speeds to the same thing then it worked, but it was very choppy) One guess of mine would be to put PacMan on his own Thread, but my brain is so fried I'm not quite sure where to begin. Any guidance/references would be appriciated.

    Personally I think you've got the wrong approach.
    Instead of creating a Thread for every ghost, you should keep yourself to the one you've got in the PackMan class.
    Tough what you need to do is make the whole game frames based.
    You've got a speed variable that you should use to add/increase the X/Y location each frame, something like:
    Ghost[X].newTick();Where newTick() should be something like:
    public void newTick(); {
         x += speed;
         y += speed;
    }and instead of drawing inside the Ghost class you should draw in the PackMan class, no collision with double usage of the Graphics objects.
    Well, I hope you've got the general idea, post a message if you would like a practical example.

  • Pacman update and mirrorlist

    With the upgrade to pacman-3.2.1-2, we have split the mirrorlist into the pacman-mirrorlist package. This will allow us to push more frequent updates to the mirrorlist, instead of only updating it with pacman releases.  As part of this upgrade, your current /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist file will be saved as mirrorlist.pacorig and the default mirrorlist put in its place.  Remember to merge these files in order to keep using your mirror(s) of choice.

    This is somewhat less generic than what I had in mind because I realized that the order of the mirrors need to be preserved. Anyway, the script does the following:
    read in uncommented mirrors from mirrorlist.pacorig
    check them against the new mirrorlist
    for each one that's not in the new list, ask if the user would like to keep it
    create a new file with the previously selected mirrors appended to the top followed by the complete new mirrorlist with the server lines commented out
    usage:
    merge_pacorig_mirrors.pl /path/to/output_file
    Check the output file then move it to /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist if you're happy with it. The script will not overwrite your mirrorlists (unless you specify them as the output file, but I do not recommend that).

  • Pacman signature error

    Hello,
    I was installing XFCE4, but my laptop died while pacman was downloading and installing the packages. Now, if I try to download any package that contains ant packages or dependencies from XFCE I get error: signature from <whoever> is invalid.
    I've no clue what to do. I've googled this and have only seen solutions to problems where the pacman-key hasn't been initialized, but that's not the problem I'm having.
    Any help is appreciated,
    Thank you.

    guess you won't be upgrading on battery ever again, give this a try:
    sudo systemctl disable pacman-init.service
    Then reboot, then
    sudo pacman-key --init
    sudo pacman-key --populate archlinux

  • Perl Pacman Ping

    I am writing a Perl utilty to check for dead mirrors in the pacman mirrorlist.
    The Net::Ping module seems to be working, but due to some symantics the live servers are being labeled dead.
    http://hastebin.com/torekataci.pl
    (sorry for the ugly formatting, it was rushed)

    What is your question? Your script appears to have larger problems than live servers being labelled as dead. For starters, on my machine it truncates the hostnames:
    Use of uninitialized value $1 in string at ./test.pl line 15, <LIST> line 1.
    dead mirror:
    Use of uninitialized value $1 in string at ./test.pl line 15, <LIST> line 2.
    dead mirror:
    Use of uninitialized value $1 in string at ./test.pl line 15, <LIST> line 3.
    dead mirror:
    Use of uninitialized value $1 in string at ./test.pl line 15, <LIST> line 4.
    dead mirror:
    Use of uninitialized value $1 in string at ./test.pl line 15, <LIST> line 5.
    dead mirror:
    Use of uninitialized value $1 in string at ./test.pl line 15, <LIST> line 6.
    dead mirror:
    dead mirror: on.net/pub
    dead mirror: net.au/pub
    dead mirror: edu.au/pub
    dead mirror: edu.au
    EDIT:
    Consider using Regexp::Common
    use warnings;
    use strict;
    use Net::Ping;
    use Regexp::Common qw /URI/;;
    my @servers;
    my $serverso = 0;
    my $mirror;
    my $p = Net::Ping->new();
    open LIST, "/etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist" or die "Mirrorlist not found. Is pacman properly installed?";
    while(<LIST>)
    m|Server = $RE{URI}{HTTP}{-keep}|i or next;
    $mirror = $3;
    print "dead mirror: $mirror\n" unless $p->ping($mirror);
    die;
    close(LIST);
