Pacman librsync error?

I'm getting some strange behavior from Pacman, and constant errors looking as such:
[tom@arch ~]$ sudo pacman -Syu

I have tried reinstalling pacman (which is successful) and also librsync (which is not).
I'm getting behavior like this:

I'm still getting used to the 'Arch' way of doing things, but I come from Gentoo, so I'm in familiar territory.  I'm just at a loss of what's going on here with the package manager, and google gave me nothing useful.
Thanks.

Indeed, that did it.
Still learning the quirks of pacman.  It's a bit different from portage (emerge).

  • [SOLVED] Pacman GPGME error: No data

I recently bought a new computer and, of course, wanted to get away from windows 8 asap. I've installed arch several times before, and this time, from the outset, I've been plagued with GPGME errors. First was during the installation when I tried to install the base system with pacstrap. I solved that using the method here: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=142798 (essentially delete /var/lib/pacman/sync and then run pacman -Syyu). From there on out, the install proceeded happily. After booting into my system, I attempted to begin downloading and installing things such as openssh, gparted, virt-manager...etc. Now I get the same error that I had before.
    pacman -Syyu

As soon as this happened, I attempted to re initialize pacman and the keys with
    pacman-key --init && pacman-key --populate archlinux
This ran properly, but I was still unable to sync or update pacman. I then tried deleting /var/lib/pacman/sync and updating with the same result.
Next, I tried commenting out the mirrors, as that was mentioned in several posts while perusing the wiki. This still did not work. The next ting I tried was setting the SigLevel in the pacman.conf to Never, which brought about a whole host of different errors when trying to update (Unrecognized archive format error).
After reinitializing the keys again, deleting the /var/lib/pacman/sync folder and attempting another (unsuccessful) pacman -Syyu, and running pacman-key --refresh-keys, I set the SigLevel back to it's default, and decided it might be time to post asking for help. Does anyone have any other ideas that I could try? I've been working on this unsuccessfully for a few hours now, and I'd like to see it up and running.
    Thank you all in advance!
Searching the archwiki, I tried these threads for additional help:
    https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 2#p1111872 -- had a problem in pacman conf I do not
https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=169225 --commenting out mirrors did not work
https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=135310 --- did not help with archive errors
..... and many many more that were totally unrelated despite similar titles to mine

I shutdown my computer, moved to a different network area, and it is now running happily. I have no idea why... perhaps firewall controls? Whatever the reason was, this is no longer happening. Marking as solved.

Little addon ... maybe pacman could say something about "overwriting" files...
if its intended to.. or should never ever happen... whatever.. maybe with msg's the pkg-distributer made himself (cuz at least he should know WHY of IF it should happen )
this could be achieved by putting info in the pgk that there will be files to overwrite... so the user still is able to say "oh no don't touch it!" if he doesn't want pac'y to do that...
    like:
    REWORKDESTINATION=" /usr/man/man8/rshd.8.gz  /foo/bar"
REWORKMESSAGE="1. just cuz im funny... <split> 2. heavy bugs fixed"
    [root@gateway ~]# pacman -S heimdal
    Targets: heimdal-0.6.2-1
    Total Package Size: 1.3 MB

    reworkinfo: Just cuz im funny...
do you want to overwrite? (YES/no) :_
so you could also -f pac'y and he simply overwrites exept things on the <b>HoldPkg !</b> (so you still feel save with some things )
    secondly
it would be nice to make pacman capable to download/install pgk with given versions... but as far as i see there are a lot threats about that
    thirdly
it would also be nice if a pkg you install could add things to the pacman.conf like NoUpgrade and HoldPkg. ... eg. updating cups ... it saves the configfiles.. yeah... but as .pacsave and cups is after restarting the deamons unuseable cuz it loads with the new ones ... the other way round would be nicer...
so if you install cups the first time the pkg it self writes into pacman.conf:
    NoUpgrade /etc/cups/cupsd.conf /etc/cups/classes.conf /etc/cups/client.conf /etc/cups/mime.convs /etc/cups/mime.types /etc/cups/printes.conf
maybe with a update function like:
    Syntax: update(file, method, string1, string2);
    example:
    update(pacman.conf,add,"NoUpdate NoUpgrade /etc/cups/cupsd.conf /etc/cups/classes.conf /etc/cups/client.conf /etc/cups/mime.convs /etc/cups/mime.types /etc/cups/printes.conf, )
and when you remove the pkg it does automatically:
    update(pacman.conf, remove, "NoUpgrade /etc/cups/cupsd.conf /etc/cups/classes.conf /etc/cups/client.conf /etc/cups/mime.convs /etc/cups/mime.types /etc/cups/printes.conf", )
this could also work with a substitute-method so in pkg-updates you can also update pacman.
i think that would heavily increase the power of pacman - wich already is a realy mighty thing

I like 1 and 3.... very good ideas - especially number 1.. it'd be nice to have overwrite functionality in packages
about number 2 - this issue has been brought up ad nauseum.... Arch is considered by users and developers a "bleeding edge distro" - that is, Arch uses the newest packages, assuming they work.  allowing users to manually grab a non-bleeding edge package, or even downgrade their packages is, for lack of a better phrase, against policy.  If something is not functional in a given package, then Arch as a whole should be downgraded until the package is working.  If a new version replaces the old with differing functionality, the packages should be installed side-by-side (as is the case with gtk1 & gtk2, imlib & imlib2, and many more).
In a bleeding edge distro, downgrading a package simply because a user "likes SomePackage 0.9 better than 1.0" is not worthwhile.  Package management would become so much more difficult and require much more space.
If there is a problem with a package (i.e. "I upgraded to Blah 0.6.5 from 0.6.3 and it doesn't work now") then the problem is most likely on your system and should be fixed.  Blame the developers, blame yourself, whatever... the fact of the matter is you need to expect this sort of thing with Arch...

  • Pacman : returning error 16 from alpm_db_update

Recently, yaourt behave oddly on my homeserver, outputting some truncated errors messages as if they were answers from a regex search. Long story short, I tried to fix the problem but did not yet succeeded, so maybe someone here will help me.
    What I tried :
Use pacman instead of yaourt -> gave me a full error message "opening /var/lib/pacman/sync/core/dhcpcd-5.1.3-1/depends failed : No file or directory" . I am not sure the problem is package-related since I uninstalled and reinstalled it.
Moreover when I tried pacman with -Scc and -Syy I had an error message about the core database. Then, with -Syu and --debug option, I had this:
    :: Synchronizing packages data...
debug: failed to get lastupdate time for core
debug: using 'core.db.tar.gz' for download progress
    debug: HTTP_PROXY: (null)
    debug: http_proxy: (null)
    debug: FTP_PROXY:  (null)
    debug: ftp_proxy:  (null)
    debug: connected to distrib-coffee.ipsl.jussieu.fr successfully
    downloading de core.db.tar.gz...
    Error: deleting core database failed
debug: returning error 16 from alpm_db_update : removing entry from database failed
Error: updating core failed (removing entry from database failed)
Any idea ? Thanx in advance

Have you already tried a different mirror?

  • [SOLVED] pacman download errors

the 2008.03-1.archboot.ftp.iso is the only iso that worked for me. after the install, i logged in using root. I ran pacman -S xorg but got an error. I checked the mirrorlist file and everything was uncommented. I ran pacman -Syy and got many errors. failed to synchronize any database. I did nano pacman.conf and in there was no ftp sites. i put Architecture = auto at the bottom of pacman.conf file and got an error.
    your help is greatly appreciated.

this computer cant boot a cd and no usb. my only option was the 2008 iso because the 2009 iso and 2010 iso were giving errors. so i cant do a system upgrade to 2010.5 once i get pacman fixed?

  • [SOLVED] PACMAN sig errors

    Hi,
So i have this problem which started about a week ago, i reckon around the time of that pacman update. Anyway i'm getting signing erros on package installs and  a sudo pacman-key --init
sudo pacman-key --populate archlinux with and without sudo pacman -Syy fixes it....till i reboot then it errors up again. I've removed the /etc/pacman.d/gnupg folder etc reinstalled archlinux-keyring, pacman without a fix. Sorry my first post here is a beg for ideas to help but i'm more of a lurker then poster.
If anyone needs more info i am happy to provide as i really would love to solve this. Long live arch linux
    cheers
    Al
    edit:
Should add the keys show up with pacman-key -l or -f etc after reboot but doesn't stop me from errors. so the keyring is still there but not searched?   but if i do a pacman-key --refresh-keys then it will find new keys but this will not fix the errors and allow package install.   needs the --init  then populate to allow install.
    hope i'm clear enough
Last edited by woznme (2013-03-12 12:39:32)

Allan it appears to be correct, and i disabled the ntpd check/set i had autostarting and that made no difference. Thanks for your efforts in helping troubleshoot this.
not sure this helps but if I logout my openbox session  (--exit) then logon again the keyring is still working fine.

I cannot see a package of that name in extra on the up-to-date mirrors that I use.  I checked one that was badly out of date and there was a package called xf86-video-nouveau-0.0.10_git20090612-2-i686.pkg.tar.gz.  Maybe it has been removed?  There is a package in AUR called xf86-video-nouveau-git 20090913-1 but I don't know if that is the correct one.

  • Pacman/mirror errors (solved)

For the last 4 days when I have tried to install anything with pacman  (the mirror I use is "unixheads") I get errors saying it failed to retrieve files and no access. Prior to this I had very fast responses.

i had the same problem, too, that's how i ended up here.
i fixed it by going into the /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist file and scrolling to the very bottom. there's an entry called #setup entry.
change the ftp to http in the unixheads url (and make sure all the other mirrors are still commented) that worked for me
I did as you suggested and then received this error when using pacman.

Thanks for your reply, not sure how to remove the /var/lib/pacman/db.lck

  • Pacman issue - error: .. : No such file or directory.

It seems I have my first issue, and it's with Pacman. I get this error everytime I sync the database or install a package, even though everything seems to go fine.
error: /var/lib/pacman/extra/flite-1.3-2/desc: No such file or directory
I don't know what flite is but it won't install it as it doesn't exist even though there is a directory called "flite-1.3-2" and it's empty. I've tried removing the directory but synching the database doesn't put it back. Also I've used 'pacman -Scc' to clear cache but still no joy.

delete the directory /var/lib/pacman/extra and run pacman -Sy to restore. I believe if you delete just the flite directory it won't restore with Sy.

Anyone else, looking at this, look at https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 3#p1086153 which suggests the above method could break pacman (but I don't understand why yet).

Wait until your server upload the recent Arch Linux updates. Than you will be able to upgrade it. Or do like i had: download open-bm-tools from Arch Linux official site  and install it and then issue "pacman -Syu".

At some point I think I had the haskell repository enabled on this machine, but I removed it because it was giving me too many headaches and conflicts. I'm not sure how to go about resetting things so that I can update packages comfortable again.

error: could not parse package description file 'gambas3-gb-ncurses-3.3.4-3/desc' from db 'community'
You should deal with this error - something is wrong. Does that file exist? Is the package installed? Is it missing files?
As for haskell, unless you want to reenable the repository, I guess you need to uninstall those packages. You can then update and reinstall the versions from the standard repositories if you need them.
I checked a couple of those packages, including xmonad, and the versions in the official repos require e.g. ghc 7.6.2-1 so those should work fine with upgrading.

  • Can't pacman -Syu : errors(solved)

I am having lots of conflicting erros when I try to update packages one at a time. So I went to update the whole system pacman -Syu and I get the following
    error: could not prepare transaction
error: failed to commit transaction ( conflicting files)
    filesystem /usr/local/share/man exists
    nvidia-utils: /usr/lib/libXvMCNVIDIA_dynamic.so.1 exists
errors occured no packages were upgraded
I know that I can force individual packages to upgrade by adding-f, should I try to fix the problems or should I force the system upgrade? and can you do that with pacman -Syu -f ??
